"Lush, engrossing, and full of mystery and dark magic," The Mask of Mirrors is the unmissable start to the Rook & Rose trilogy, a dazzling fantasy adventure by Marie Brennan and Alyc Helms, writing together as M. A. Carrick. (BookPage) FORTUNE FAVORS THE BOLD. MAGIC FAVORS THE LIARS. Ren is a liar and a thief, a pattern-reader and a daughter of no clan. Raised in the slums of Nadežra, she fled that world to save her sister. Now, she has returned with one goal: to trick her way into a noble house, securing her fortune and her sister’s future. But in the city of dreams, her masquerade is just one of many. Enigmatic crime lord Derossi Vargo, stony captain of the guard Grey Serrado, dashing heir Leato Traementis, and the legendary vigilante known as the Rook all have secrets that could unravel her own. And as corrupt nightmare magic begins to weave its way through the city of dreams, the poisonous feuds of its aristocrats and the shadowy dangers of its impoverished underbelly become tangled—with Ren at their heart. Praise for the Rook & Rose trilogy: "Immersive…a feast to savor slowly." —BuzzFeed "For those who like their revenge plots served with the intrigue of The Goblin Emperor, the colonial conflict of The City of Brass, the panache of Swordspoint, and the richly detailed settings of Guy Gavriel Kay."—Booklist (starred review) "Wonderfully immersive—I was unable to put it down." —Andrea Stewart, author of The Bone Shard Daughter "Exactly the fantasy adventure novel you're craving." —Tasha Suri, author of The Jasmine Throne

Venica chiamato Panis quadratus.

Desire
Desire. By today’s Oxford definition, “a strong feeling of wanting to have something or wishing for something to happen”. Denotation itself can be helpful; logical; rational. To understand the world through a logical analysis as something separate from any emotional connotation is something I myself sought after for some time; I desired such. At some point along the way, I realized that emotions are part of the human experience. Which is admittedly frustrating, as emotions do not lead us to rational, logical perspectives - so then, how do we explore life while being true to our own state, but also keeping an unbiased perspective fair to one another?
I’m drifting off center. Come, read with me while I find it.
“Tell me now, if it isn’t “Desire” the most beautiful word you’ve ever read. Tell me now, if it isn’t the pure essence of being humans. Because, in that way, the word “Desire”, changes everything. It changes the ground rules of the game we are breathlessly playing at.” Luca Venica wrote this in an article on Medium, and I like it. He explains the meaning of the word itself - desire. De, a negative latin prefix. Sidus, meaning stars. The lack of stars. He explains in a very poetic, though slightly difficult to read, way that desire takes root when we feel lacking in some way. We project that deficit onto something outside of us that may fulfill us. Desire is, then, yearning; craving.
I simply adore how he was able to blend the etymology of the word itself into such a raw depiction of the connotation. The connotation being that I am not enough; that I need you to complete some aspect of my being or my life; that lacking is okay - can even be beautiful. ‘I desire you’ takes on a whole new meaning when keeping this in mind. To desire is to lay our hard ironed pride at the feet of someone or something else and simply yearn. Simply desire. If my writing is having the intended impact, then you can see how the feeling of desire goes far beyond the lengths the definition itself can take us.
I have a thought bouncing in my mind, and I hope it doesn’t interrupt the flow of this post too much.. If emotion does not fit into the boundaries of logic, is it illogical? Emotion drives us and is such an integral part of being human - if the universe truly is a logical one, then emotions would be logical, would they not? Everything that exists is inherently rooted in logic, right? It must, then, be possible for logical things to lead to illogical consequences - whereas we claim emotions to be illogical, but really it is the thoughts they inspire that hold the rightful claim to the concept. Emotions are logical, but can inspire illogical perspectives. But even then - if you follow the line of someone’s perspective, emotions and brain wiring and all, wouldn’t their thoughts and actions make sense? Can anything real truly be illogical? I suppose it depends on the perspective in which you’re viewing the circumstance in question. I digress.
Desire is a logical aspect of the human experience. We all need one another, all work together in a way that we can’t truly comprehend as individuals - think of bees in a hive. All following instincts and programming that to each one bee is experienced much differently than the bigger picture viewed from our perspective. If we had advanced senses, and a higher viewpoint, what would the human experience really look like? Would emotions, like desire, and everything that takes root in them, make perfect sense? I wonder about these things.
Within my life, as I’m sure you can imagine, I’ve witnessed and experienced many forms of desire. When I was a child, my primary desire was attention, and I got the most when I did well in school. Praise from teachers, rewards from parents, bewilderment from peers - I thrived on it all. As a teenager, my desire for straight A’s got replaced with what felt like a deep searing need for social validation - what a misdirect that was. As I blossomed into a young adult, social validation got replaced with desiring true acceptance - both from myself and my environment. These days, my primary desire is stability. Primary desires are primal - as are fleeting desires. Let’s talk about some of mine…
This is a bit taboo, but as a teenager I have to admit that I desired the touch of an older man against my skin. My first taboo crush was my math teacher. Excelling in all my classes, it was within reason for him to send word to the other teachers that I would be spending time in his other classes to help out the students. Anything to be near him a little longer. It was innocent, of course, but he made my heartbeat quicken and my cheeks go red. So tall, strong, handsome, and intelligent. He said I was a breath of fresh air, and I clung to that compliment. I have a photo of him and I somewhere, from when he came to the school to see me off before a school dance. He left after seeing me, and the fact that he came just for me filled me with an unquenchable fire. It was the last time I saw him - his muscles shown in jeans and a tank top. I toyed with the boys at the dance, dancing with them and showing off, all fueled by my desire for Mr. Jones. I couldn’t help but cross the line during summer break. “We should hang out sometime.” I messaged him on Facebook. “Find me when you’re 18.” My face was probably the reddist it had ever been. And gosh, if I had been able to find this man, oh the fun we would have. While I had no idea what future fantasies he had in mind back then, innocent and naive as I was, I appreciate the message much more now. He desired me, and it was strong enough to send that message - I mean my mother was his colleague for goodness sake! Scandalous, naughty, taboo. Hot. Fleeting and naive as it was.
I had a string of other unrequited crushes on older men - one time, a hot man came to my door to sell textbooks. I spent hours convincing my dad that I needed these books to get ahead in school. He finally agreed to have a meeting with the man the next day. I prepared a list of questions to prolong the interaction as long as I possibly could. My father spent nearly $200 - I still have the books, but I never even opened them. I just wanted to chat with this handsome man, I wanted to entertain him, I wanted to please him. I was not the doe being chased, but the lioness herself.
A series of other interactions are burned into my brain. Getting into trouble so that I could go to in-school suspension, where I stood out because I spent the entire lunch hour writing every time. The teacher couldn’t help but ask me to stay after, and asked to see my work. I didn’t think he was particularly handsome, but I loved how nervous I made him. We saw one another throughout the year. It was the year that I was doing 11th and 12th grade at the same time - this meant that I had an 11th grade homeroom, but was not required to attend the grade level assemblies. One afternoon, my class went to their assembly, and they asked my prey to come watch over me while they were away. I had on a shirt - crop top and see through, certainly not allowed. When the female teachers pointed it out earlier that day, I feigned ignorance and embarrassment, putting my jacket on and assuring them that I would be wearing it, zipper up, the rest of the day - only to remove it when out of their sight. The male teacher pointed it out while it was only him and I in the classroom, and I decided to toy with him. “What do you mean? Oh this?” I touched my breasts lightly. “This is part of the shirt.” I gave him a coy grin and hungry eyes as I watched his face turn as red as I’d ever seen a face, and listened to him stumble with his words. That poor man.
It got to the point that it was very obvious what my desire was, even if not my primary driving desire. I needed an older man to play with. I searched online for a sugar daddy, and finally found one willing to overlook my age. I did need to cite the laws - in my state of residence, the age of consent was 16. In fact, it was only 18 in less than half of the states. This proved to be a less than sufficient argument for so many men, but I only needed one, and I found him. He was patient and enjoyed my innocence. Got to know me, and never went beyond kissing until I was ready for more. We took things slow, and over the course of 2 years he taught me so much about myself, about men, and about desire. I lost my virginity to my sweet G. - not that he knew that. I also had a boyfriend during this time who had no idea who I was. Two years spent with both of them - as well as entertaining a couple boys and girls at school. I broke my boyfriend’s heart in the end. He desired the illusion I created, and I desired much more from my life than any one man could offer.
I was a naughty little minx, and I still am.
I am more honest about my desires now. I yearn to experience many men and ladies, in many different ways, and to let these dynamic engagements unfold within agreed upon boundaries. My truth is not bearable to many, but I was given the gift of the hard lessons of authenticity at a young age. Young enough to not be tied down into a life where authenticity would burn it all to the ground. I can only imagine what that feels like - to be boxed into an expected role as parent, wife, husband; to have desires that need to be compartmentalized for the livelihood of those you care for and love.
I am privileged to have been able to enter a relationship with the knowledge that I am not, have never been, and never will be monogamous.
How did I get so far off track? Again, I ask that you relax with me while I find my center.
Desire. I have experienced many forms of it. The driving force, the fleeting, the obsessive, the unrequited, and I have experienced, time and time again, desire fulfilled. All forms of desire take on this primal quality, don’t they? When you desire something or someone, it can take over as strong as the desire for life itself. The feeling of that desire fulfilled.. Not the impacts afterwards, but the moment of fulfillment itself. Think of it now. Sit with the sensation of desire fulfilled. My lips finally grazing yours as I lean back onto the bed. Our sweat mingled as my breasts push against your skin. My voice in your ear as I ask you to keep pumping into me. That feeling right there could keep me warm in the harshest of winter storms.
Right now, my body is hot from the memories conjured. As I type this, I feel tingles in my skin not only inspired by the past, but the future. Think of how many desires will be satiated within our lives. How many moments to come where everything falls into place and just feels right for a while. I want us to bask in desire fulfilled. I want to spend the moments together where everything just feels serendipitously aligned.
Come and join me deep in the connotation of desire.
