Despite what the song says, a kiss isn’t always just a kiss.

A kiss can be political, because it’s the first of its kind or because it’s between two heads of state.

A kiss can also become iconic when it’s captured on film, even if the kiss itself was invasive and unwanted.

With that in mind, here’s a list of some of the most memorable kisses in history.

Scholars debate whether kissing began as a trend that spread around the globe, or sprung up organically in different regions.

Whatever the case, the earliest known written mentions of it are in Vedic Sanskrit scriptures circa 1500 B.C., according to research by Vaughn Bryant, an anthropology professor at Texas A&M University.

These scriptures, known as the Vedas, were foundational to the religion of Hinduism.

After that, kissing continued to appear in ancient Indian and Hindu literature.

The Mahabharata, a Sanskrit epic compiled by the 4th century A.D., has a line in which someone “set her mouth to my mouth and made a noise that produced pleasure in me.”

The Kama Sutra, an ancient Sanskrit text on eroticism and love, also has a chapter on kissing that identifies different methods of kissing and types of kisses.

Kissing isn’t just a romantic act. It can also be a sign of friendship or betrayal.

In the Gospels of Matthew and Mark, written circa the 1st century, Judas betrays Jesus by identifying him with a kiss so that armed men can take him away and eventually kill him.

Judas’ kiss has since become a popular storytelling allusion.

It may have inspired the “kiss of death” that appears in mafia literature and film (but was probably never an actual mafia practice).

Perhaps the most famous example is in The Godfather Part II, when Al Pacino’s character gives his brother Fredo the kiss of death for betraying him.

The first people to smooch on film were May Irwin and John C. Rice, who appeared in a short film known variously as May Irwin kiss, Kiss, or The Kiss.

In 1896, the two performers went to Thomas Edison’s studio in New Jersey and reenacted their final kiss scene from a play they were putting on in New York City.

On stage, no one thought the kiss was that sensational. But many felt the close-up footage of them kissing was too risqué.

In 1898, black performers Saint Suttle and Gertie Brown starred in a short film titled ''Something Good-Negro Kiss,'' the first film to show Black Americans kissing.

In 2017, film historians rediscovered the footage, which was filmed by a white man named William Selig in Chicago.

“There’s a performance there because they’re dancing with one another, but their kissing has an unmistakable sense of naturalness, pleasure and amusement as well,” Allyson Nadia Field, a professor of cinema and media studies at the University of Chicago who helped identify the film, said in a university press release.

“It is really striking to me, as a historian who works on race and cinema, to think that this kind of artifact could have existed in 1898.”

On the morning of 14 August 1945, patients burst into Greta Zimmer’s Manhattan office claiming the war in Japan was over.

The Austrian immigrant wasn’t sure what to think, so on her lunch break, she went to Times Square in her white dental assistant’s uniform to see what the news ticker said.

The atmosphere there was celebratory. The ticker confirmed that it was indeed V-J Day, and World War II was over.

As Zimmer looked away from the ticker, a Navy sailor named George Mendonsan — who’d started drinking early and mistook Zimmer for a nurse — ran up and aggressively kissed her, leaving his girlfriend behind.

Zimmer struggled to push the stranger off, and they parted ways.

But unbeknownst to both of them, photographers Alfred Eisenstaedt and Victor Jorgensen had each captured the moment, as recounted in The Kissing Sailor: The Mystery Behind The Photo That Ended World War II.

Eisenstaedt’s photo became one of the most iconic WWII images in U.S. history, in part because viewers mistook it for a picture of a Naval officer and nurse celebrating together.

The photo has also stirred controversy, as many people have claimed over the years to be the couple in the image, while others point out that it depicts a nonconsensual moment.

Zimmer said in an interview with the Library of Congress in 2005:

“It wasn’t my choice to be kissed...the guy just came over and kissed or grabbed!”

When William Shatner and Nichelle Nichols kissed on a 1968 episode of Star Trek, it was not technically the first interracial kiss on U.S. television.

But it was the one that seemed to have the most cultural impact.

In the episode, titled “Plato’s Stepchildren,” Captain James Kirk and Officer Nyota Uhura encounter aliens who force them to kiss each other through telekinesis.

In Nichols’ book Beyond Uhura: Star Trek and Other Memories, she recalls that NBC was worried how white Americans would react to the scene, so they asked the actors to film two scenes: one with a kiss and one without a kiss.

However, Nichols and Shatner purposefully messed up all of the kissless takes in order to ensure that NBC aired the kissing scene.

During the Cold War, leaders of communist states often greeted each other with what’s called the “socialist fraternal kiss.”

This could be on the cheek or the mouth, but the most famous example is French photographer Régis Bossu’s 1979 picture of the Soviet Union’s Leonid Brezhnev and East Germany’s Erich Honecker kissing on the mouth.

The kiss occurred when Brezhnev visited East Berlin to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the German Democratic Republic (i.e., East Germany).

When the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, the Soviet artist Dmitri Vrubel recreated the image in a mural on the wall’s east side.

He captioned it: “My God, Help Me to Survive This Deadly Love.”

Ao organizar algumas coisas dentro de um armário encontrei uma mochila velha, meia largada e esquecida já alguns anos, era toda feinha, e estava até meio mofada, então resolvi dar uma cara nova pra ela, já que a minha velha guerreira estava em pior estado, toda furada e remendada, queria algo simples, mais simbólico, algo que energizasse os meus caminhos, que tivesse a ver comigo e que também transformasse o preto triste do tecido em algo mais vibrante e luminoso, então peguei os pincéis e um pouco de tinta e customizei ela... Legal e simples, porém ainda muito estranho para alguns... Ontem uma senhora que sentou do meu lado no ônibus, viu a mochila no meu colo e me perguntou que símbolo era este? Então falei a ela que este desenho representava o movimento circular das ondas sonoras da vida, da vibração energética do Universo, do som que equilibra e sustenta as coisas, da sonoridade perfeita, da harmonia que coloca tudo no seu lugar... Então ela me disse: Mas vc escuta este som? Eu disse a ela que sim que eu escutava sempre que me permitia, e que todos escutam mas grande parte não se dá conta porque não se permitem ficar em silêncio... e que o Om (ॐ), não era o som cotidiano produzido pelos homens, mas sim o som vibracional emitido pela criação, ou seja tudo que escutamos qdo estamos quietos e centrados em silêncio, quando estamos harmonizados em nós mesmos nos permitindo a escuta divina do nosso próprio corpo vivo, se manifestando, nutrindo e ligado também a outras energias do Universo, do Cosmo e de toda natureza no processo de construção da sua obra...Ou seja o som da voz de Deus...Disse a ela também que o Om ou Aum (ॐ) é o mantra mais importante do hinduísmo e também utilizado em outras religiões. Dsse, que ele contém o conhecimento sagrado dos antigos Vedas e é considerado o corpo sonoro do Absoluto, Shabda Brahman. disse também, que o Om é o som supremo do universo e a semente da vida que nunca desiste e que sempre prospera e fecunda infinitamente...Disse também que o Om é considerado um mantra eterno, os seus três sons, a, u e m, representados no símbolo são os três primeiros estados de consciência. E que na Índia, o mantra Om está em todas partes, e que os Hindus de todas as etnias, castas e idades conhecem perfeitamente o seu significado. Ele ecoa desde a noite das idades em todos os templos e comunidades ao longo do subcontinente.

Ela então absorta e meia sem jeito, sorriu, levantou-se, me desejou boa noite, puxou a cigarra e desceu do ônibus... Tudo é som, tudo é encontro, aprendizado, vibração e movimento...

Selanik’ten İzmir’e göç etmiş bir ailenin 6’ncı evladıydı.

İzmir’in Karataş semtindeki Mithatpaşa caddesinde bir evde doğdu.

Küçük yaşta babasını kaybedince ailece İstanbul’a taşındılar.

Okudu, büyüdü, Yeşilçam’a girdi.

Soyadını değiştirdi.

O artık Ayhan Işıyan değil Ayhan Işık’tı.

Kısa sürede ünlendi.

Türk Sineması’nın kralıydı.

Bir jöndü.

Her filminde başroldü.

Yeşilçam’da herkesle arası çok iyiydi ama en çok Nubar Terziyan’ı sevmişti.

Terziyan, etnik kimliğini gizlemeyen tek aktördü.

Herkes gibi Nubar Terziyan da yıkılmıştı.

İlan Ayhan Işık’ın ailesini çok rahatsız etti.

Bir Ermeni'nin oğullarına "Amcan" diye hitap etmesi yanlış anlaşılabilirdi.

Onlar da gazetelere hemen karşı bir ilan verdiler.

Şöyle yazıyordu ilanda.

“Önemli bir düzeltme.

‘Amcan Nubar Terziyan’ imzasıyla çıkan ilanla sevgili varlığımız Ayhan Işık’ın hiçbir ilişkisi yoktur.Görülen lüzum üzerine üzüntüyle duyururuz.

Ailesi.”

Tarih 18 Haziran 1979’du.

İlanı gören Nubar Terziyan’ın gözünden bir damla yaş geldi.

Sanki siyah beyaz ağladı.

O günden sonra bir daha eskisi gibi hiç gülmedi.

Filmde Şener Şen ile Nubar Terziyan da oynuyordu.

Bir cenaze namazı sahnesinde ikili arasında şu replikler geçiyordu.

Gerçek hayattandı.

Nubar Terziyan yaşamı boyunca çok müslümanın cenazesine katılmış, namazda saf tutmuştu.

Yeşilçam'ın "Tonton Amca" sı 23 yıl önce bir Ocak günü dünyaya veda etti..

Geride 226 film, bir kitap, binlerce anı bıraktı.

O dinler arası dialoğun ve hoşgörünün sembollerinden biriydi.

Sezen Aksu'nun Kırık Vals isimli şarkısında dediği gibi.

A CCJ é presidida pelo deputado Camilo Martins.FOTO: Vicente Schmitt/Agência AL Reunida na manhã desta terça-feira (16), a Comissão de Constituição e Justiça (CCJ) apresentou parecer favorável ao Projeto de Lei (PL) 189/2023, que visa elevar o percentual do Imposto sobre a Propriedade de Veículos Automotores (IPVA) destinado para a manutenção e conservação da malha viária estadual. A proposta, de autoria do deputado Fabiano da Luz (PT), é que o índice passe dos atuais 10%, para 30%, dentro do montante do imposto que cabe ao Estado. Na exposição de motivos que acompanha o projeto, o autor afirmou que atualmente só 27,41% das rodovias estaduais podem ser consideradas em bom estado, com 43,51% delas estando em situação regular e 29,08% em má ou péssima situação. Ele argumentou ainda que o PL 189/2023 não representa inovação legal, visando somente alterar uma lei de mesmo teor já aprovada pela Assembleia Legislativa e sancionada pelo governo em anos anteriores. “Com efeito, a destinação de percentual do IPVA para a manutenção da malha viária estadual já é realidade estabelecida pela própria legislação que o projeto de lei em comento altera (Lei 17.378/2017), a qual foi integralmente sancionada pelo governador à época e, enfatizamos, a proposta em foco tem como objetivo ampliar o repasse de recursos em volume suficiente para possibilitar a efetiva manutenção das condições de trafegabilidade das rodovias estaduais.” O mesmo entendimento foi apresentado pelo relator, deputado Camilo Martins (Podemos), em seu voto, que encaminhou a aprovação da matéria. “A vinculação de parcela do imposto já é uma realidade e também é uma medida necessária para revertermos as péssimas condições da malha viária estadual”, disse. O deputado Marcius Machado (PL), que chegou a apresentar voto vista pela inconstitucionalidade do projeto, manifestou-se contrariamente ao parecer, argumentando que a Constituição Federal, no inciso 4º do artigo 167, veda a vinculação de receita de impostos. O mesmo entendimento foi apresentado pela deputada Ana Campagnolo (PL). Antes de ir a plenário, o projeto 189/2023 ainda será analisado pelas comissões de Finanças e Tributação; e de Transportes e Desenvolvimento Urbano. Emenda Ainda durante a reunião, foi acatada uma emenda ao PL 423/2021, que já havia recebido parecer favorável do colegiado. O projeto, de autoria do deputado Sargento Lima (PL), dispõe sobre a criação da Política Estadual do Hidrogênio Verde, que busca aumentar a participação do combustível, tido como um dos menos agressivos ao meio ambiente, na matriz energética de Santa Catarina. Já a emenda, apresentada no âmbito da Comissão de Economia, Ciência, Tecnologia e Inovação, tem como objetivo incorporar no texto a previsão da realização de campanhas informativas e educativas para conscientizar a população catarinense sobre os benefícios do hidrogênio verde. Ci sosterrà la speranza che fra qualche anno, una donna che abbia deciso di professare l’architettura, l’avvocatura o la medicina, o che veda nel suo futuro la direzione di un’orchestra, o infine che intenda arruolarsi nell’esercito, dopo aver sfogliato le pagine di questo dizionario, scelga di chiamare se stessa architetta, avvocata, medica, direttrice, soldata anche perché “lo dice il Dizionario Treccani”.

Valeria Della Valle, importante linguista, è la prima donna che ha diretto un dizionario della lingua italiana, per Treccani, dove è entrata, negli anni Settanta da giovane redattrice e oggi è nel consiglio scientifico dell’Enciclopedia Italiana.

Nell’edizione del 2022, co-diretta con Giuseppe Patota, ha messo in atto una rivoluzione. Sfidando regole e convenzioni, per la prima volta, il testo registra aggettivi e sostantivi, prima al femminile e poi al maschile, in successione alfabetica: “Non c’era nessuna motivazione scientifica perché questo non accadesse, solo il prevalere storico della cultura maschile“.

Nata a Roma nel 1944 è cresciuta nell’ambiente artistico e culturale di via Margutta. Sua madre dipingeva e restaurava quadri antichi, suo padre lavorava nell’editoria. Da bambina ha assistito alle dissertazioni di adulti come Renato Guttuso, Alfonso Gatto, Sibilla Aleramo, Giorgio De Chirico, Alberto Burri, Carlo Mazzacurati, Enrico Galassi.

Si è laureata alla Sapienza con Arrigo Castellani, che le ha aperto la strada a una spiegazione razionale al processo di cambiamento della lingua.

Ha pubblicato saggi su antichi testi toscani, sulla storia della lessicografia, sulla terminologia dell’arte, sulla lingua della narrativa contemporanea e sui neologismi.

È stata professoressa associata di Linguistica italiana alla Sapienza Università di Roma fino al 2014.

Ha diretto la terza edizione del Vocabolario Treccani dell’Istituto della Enciclopedia Italiana in cinque volumi (1986-1994) e contribuito ad apportare un cambiamento nella definizione della voce “donna”, nel passato sempre definita come “femmina dell’uomo” e in quell’edizione diventata “Nella specie umana, individuo di sesso femminile, soprattutto dal momento in cui abbia raggiunto la maturità anatomica e quindi l’età adulta”.

È autrice di Dizionari italiani: storia, tipi, struttura (2005) e, con Giovanni Adamo, di Le parole del lessico italiano (2008). Insieme a Giuseppe Patota ha pubblicato tredici manuali di divulgazione dedicati alla lingua italiana.

È protagonista di rubriche giornalistiche, radiofoniche e televisive riguardanti dubbi e curiosità sulla nostra lingua, e consulente scientifica di Rai Educational per la realizzazione di programmi dedicati all’insegnamento della lingua italiana.

È socia corrispondente dell’Accademia della Crusca e socia ordinaria dell’Accademia dell’Arcadia. Fa parte del consiglio di amministrazione e del comitato scientifico della Fondazione Bellonci e del comitato direttivo del Premio Strega, del comitato scientifico del Bollettino di italianistica e del consiglio scientifico del PLIDA (Progetto Lingua Italiana Dante Alighieri) della Società Dante Alighieri.

Presso l’Istituto per il lessico intellettuale europeo e storia delle idee del CNR ha coordinato con Giovanni Adamo, fino al 2019, il progetto di ricerca Osservatorio neologico della lingua italiana (Onli).

Ha scritto soggetto e testo del documentario Me ne frego! Il Fascismo e la lingua italiana, prodotto dall’Istituto Luce Cinecittà, diretto da Vanni Gandolfo e presentato alla Mostra del Cinema di Venezia 2014. Nel 2016 ha realizzato il documentario L’arma più forte. L’uomo che inventò Cinecittà, presentato in anteprima alla Festa del cinema di Roma nel 2016, che ha vinto il premio al miglior documentario di cinema Diari di Cineclub 2017.

Dall’ottobre 2020 ha condotto la trasmissione di Raitre Le parole per dirlo.

Nel 2022 ha pubblicato la sua prima opera di narrativa, La strada sognata, una raccolta di racconti ambientati nella comunità artistica che nella prima metà del ‘900 animava Via Margutta a Roma, che le è valso il Premio Settembrini.

C’è una sproporzione tra gli epiteti offensivi presenti accanto a “donna” e quelli che possono essere riferiti a un uomo. I primi hanno a che fare soprattutto con offese scagliate contro la donna  riferite  alla sua  vita sessuale, di donna che vende il proprio corpo dietro pagamento. Ma è la nostra storia, non solo quella italiana, a mancare di parole a proposito dell’uomo, corrispondenti a quelle usate per indicare un costume al quale è stata obbligata per secoli solo la donna. Anche per l’uomo abbiamo insulti che alludono alle sue abitudini sessuali e certamente in misura non paragonabile, ma qui entriamo in questioni che non hanno a che fare con la rappresentazione linguistica, bensì con la copertura eufemistica di tabù millenari. Sono convinta che non sarà invocando un falò (non solo simbolico) per bruciare le parole che ci offendono che riusciremo a difendere  la nostra immagine e il nostro ruolo. Anzi, vorrei che le espressioni più detestabili e superate continuassero ad avere spazio nei dizionari, naturalmente precedute dal doveroso avvertimento che segnala al lettore quando le espressioni o le frasi proverbiali citate corrispondono a un pregiudizio o a un luogo comune tramandato dal passato ma non più condivisibile. Secondo qualcuno i dizionari sono “cimiteri di parole”: credo, al contrario, che il nostro sforzo comune debba essere quello di fare in modo che la lingua del disprezzo esaurisca il suo corso, rimanendo come testimonianza sociale, storica, letteraria, del passato. Con la speranza, questo è il mio augurio, non solo da lessicografa, che la realtà (e poi la lingua) cambi, perché le parole non siano più solo femmine, i fatti non più solo maschi.
