Hypothesis:

If a ½ cup of cold water and a ½ cup of hot water is placed in a freezer at the same time, then the cold water will freeze faster because it is closer to the freezing point.

After that, I placed both hot and cold water cups of water into the back of the freezer next to each other and started the timer. As time passed, I periodically checked on the cups of water until they were completely frozen.

If the flame wasn’t as hot as one of the other times the trials were done, this could affect the time to find the boiling point. Three Paragraphs about Activity 1:

Throughout the duration of activity, we were introduced to multiple different scientific concepts that focused on what chemistry is, variables, molecules, and temperature. Many of the recording that was completed throughout the experiments focused on a main question, hypothesis conducted, procedures taken, materials used, and data collected. All of the concepts introduced in the experiments helped me understand what effects solids, liquids, and gases have on each other and how they change. We mainly focused on water molecules and how they are affected in the different states of a solid, liquid, or gas. We also had to make up a compound of water and salt and study the effect that the salt has during the process of freezing.

 Although all experiments were different, all of the experiments needed the same amount of data to be collected. For each experiment, we were to conduct a hypothesis, identify the independent, dependent, and controlled variables, create a list of all materials used, and record data from the experiments. For the hot and cold water that we had to freeze, my hypothesis focused on how the cold water would freeze faster than the hot water. I first started by adding the same amount of water to each cup, one with cold, and one with hot. Then, both cups were placed in the freezer and a timer was started. Periodically, I would check on both of the cups and collect data about how frozen they were all the way up until they were completely frozen. After all the data collection, I found that my hypothesis was correct. I did the same procedure with the salt water and the regular water. My hypothesis focused on how regular water would freeze faster because there was nothing that was affecting its freezing point unlike the salt water. The experiment to find if hot water or cold water boil faster, I put 5 cups of water in a pot each time a trial was conducted. My hypothesis focused on how hot water was closer to the boiling point, so it would take less time to come to a boil. In the conclusion of that experiment, I found that it does take hot water less time to come to a boil.

 From all of these experiments conducted throughout this activity, I have learned that this information can be used in everyday life. When the sidewalks and roads freeze, salt water has a lower freezing point and can help melt the ice. This is why salt is put on the roads in the winter to help decrease the amount of freezing on the roads. In cooking, filling a pot of hot water will make it boil faster if you are in a rush because it is closer to the boiling point. If you are ever in a rush to make ice for a water bottle or etc., use cold water because it will freeze faster than hot water. This is how these experiments have had an impact on everyday life.
