Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar expressed heartfelt gratitude to the villagers of Ralam in Uttarakhand and the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) after being stranded for 17 hours due to an emergency helicopter landing. Kumar was en route to Milam to inspect remote polling stations in the Pithoragarh region when his chopper, carrying the pilot and two others, was forced to land due to dense clouds and poor visibility on Wednesday afternoon. In a letter to the Chief Electoral Officer of Uttarakhand, BVRCC Purushottam, Kumar praised the villagers, stating, “All the young angels became synonymous with the high ideals of humanity.” He commended their efforts in providing food and medicines during his unexpected stay, saying, “This day became an unforgettable memory for the sake of saving the lives of all of us.” Kumar also acknowledged the ITBP’s rescue team, which arrived at around 5 am, making tea for him and his team. He noted that the remote Ralam village, located at an altitude of about 12,000 feet, was deserted due to snow, as residents had moved to their winter homes in Paton village.
