INDIA’S SDG STRUGGLE: Uneven Progress Raises Concerns Over 2030 Deadline

India is facing significant challenges in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, with progress slowing in key areas. According to a recent report, the country ranks 109th out of 167 nations, trailing global averages in nine out of 16 SDGs. While some improvements have been noted, stagnation in critical sectors casts a shadow over India’s ability to meet the deadline.

MIXED PROGRESS ACROSS SDGS

India’s overall SDG score has improved from 66 in 2020-21 to 71 in 2023-24, reflecting some advancements. However, certain goals have seen little to no progress since 2020, including:

❄️ SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities)

❄️ SDG 14 (Life Below Water)

❄️ SDG 15 (Life on Land)

One of the few bright spots is SDG 1 (No Poverty), where multidimensional poverty—covering health, education, and living standards—has declined to 14.96%. However, disparities remain, with states like Bihar and Arunachal Pradesh lagging far behind. Additionally, a key metric—extreme poverty (below $1.25 per day)—was dropped from the latest assessment, raising concerns about the accuracy of progress measurement.

STATE-WISE PERFORMANCE: Kerala, Uttarakhand, and Tamil Nadu Lead

Among Indian states, Kerala and Uttarakhand rank highest with scores of 79, followed closely by Tamil Nadu at 78. Tamil Nadu, with strong welfare programs, has excelled in several areas, including:

❄️ SDG 1 (No Poverty): The state has the lowest poverty rate (2.2%) in India.

❄️ SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy): Tamil Nadu scores a perfect 100, ensuring universal electricity access.

❄️ SDG 13 (Climate Action): With 25% forest cover, the state is making strides in environmental sustainability.

However, Tamil Nadu still faces challenges in 19 out of 108 indicators, particularly in:

❄️ SDG 5 (Gender Equality)

❄️ SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being)

❄️ SDG 4 (Quality Education)

❄️ SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure)

GENDER EQUALITY: INDIA’S BIGGEST CHALLENGE

India’s weakest performance is in SDG 5 (Gender Equality), with the country significantly behind on all key indicators. The national sex ratio at birth remains skewed at 929 females per 1,000 males, and 29.2% of married women face spousal violence. Additionally, only 13.96% of landholdings are owned by women, highlighting deep-rooted inequalities. Wage disparity, poor workplace representation, and limited autonomy further contribute to this issue.

Fourteen states and Union Territories score below 50 in gender equality, while 17 states fall in the 50-64 range. Even Kerala and Tamil Nadu, despite overall strong SDG performance, struggle with gender-related disparities.

DATA GAPS IMPACTING ASSESSMENT

A major concern in India’s SDG tracking is the lack of comprehensive data. Several key indicators have been removed or are missing, including:

❄️ Extreme poverty (SDG 1)

❄️ CO2 emissions and renewable energy share (SDG 7)

❄️ Weather-related death tolls (SDG 13)

❄️ E-waste management (SDG 12)

Tamil Nadu, along with 13 other states, lacks critical data on water quality (SDG 6), air quality (SDG 11), and afforestation (SDG 15). These gaps make it difficult to assess true progress and identify areas needing urgent intervention.

THE ROAD AHEAD

Despite positive strides in poverty reduction, clean energy, and economic growth, India’s overall SDG progress remains uneven. With less than five years until the 2030 deadline, significant efforts are required to accelerate advancements in gender equality, environmental sustainability, and social infrastructure. Addressing data gaps and refining measurement criteria will also be crucial in ensuring a transparent and accurate assessment of India’s SDG performance.
