Everything You Should Know About Uterine Artery Embolization
Uterine artery embolization (UAE), sometimes known as uterine fibroid embolization (UFE), is a minimally invasive procedure designed to shrink fibroids. It involves using a catheter to inject tiny particles into the uterine arteries that supply blood to the fibroids. By blocking the blood flow, fibroids are deprived of essential nutrients, causing them to shrink and alleviating related symptoms.
UAE is typically performed by an interventional radiologist, and the procedure is done under mild sedation, not requiring general anesthesia. Unlike hysterectomy, UAE leaves the uterus intact, making it a fertility-sparing option for women who wish to maintain their reproductive capabilities.
Comparing Uterine Artery Embolization and Hysterectomy
Procedure Type: UAE is a minimally invasive, outpatient procedure, while hysterectomy is major surgery requiring general anesthesia, with a longer recovery period.
Recovery Time: Recovery from UAE generally takes around 1-2 weeks. In contrast, hysterectomy can require a hospital stay and 4-6 weeks for a full recovery, depending on the surgical method used.
Uterus Preservation: One of the key benefits of uterine artery embolization is that it preserves the uterus, which is an advantage for those who want the option of future pregnancy. Hysterectomy, on the other hand, involves the removal of the uterus, which permanently ends a woman’s ability to conceive.
Symptom Relief: Both procedures are effective for symptom relief. UAE can alleviate symptoms like heavy bleeding, pain, and frequent urination within a few weeks. Hysterectomy provides permanent relief from fibroids but is irreversible.
Future Health Considerations: UAE is often preferred by women who are concerned about the potential hormonal changes that may follow a hysterectomy. Preserving the uterus can also help maintain a sense of bodily integrity and reduce the risk of long-term side effects.
Why Choose Uterine Artery Embolization?
Uterine artery embolization offers several benefits over traditional surgical options:
Minimally Invasive: UAE involves no major incisions and has a lower risk of surgical complications.
Quick Recovery: The outpatient nature of the procedure and minimal recovery time are appealing for those with busy schedules or caretaking responsibilities.
Effectiveness: Studies have shown that UAE is highly effective in reducing the size of fibroids and relieving symptoms.
Preserves Reproductive Health: By keeping the uterus intact, UAE allows women to retain the potential for pregnancy, an essential factor for those planning to expand their families.
What to Expect During and After UAE
During the UAE procedure, an interventional radiologist inserts a thin catheter into the blood vessels that supply the fibroids. Microscopic particles are then introduced through the catheter to block blood flow to the fibroids. As fibroids shrink, symptoms start to improve gradually. Most patients go home the same day, and a typical recovery period lasts about one to two weeks.
After UAE, you may experience mild pain or cramping, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief. You’ll also have follow-up visits with your doctor to ensure that your fibroids are shrinking as expected and to discuss any additional treatment needs.
Making the Choice
The decision between uterine artery embolization and hysterectomy depends on various factors, including your age, reproductive goals, severity of symptoms, and personal health preferences. UAE provides a promising option for those seeking a less invasive solution that still effectively treats fibroids and maintains the option of fertility.

Yesterday's mood. I feel like I'm in a serious time of change? Everything feels like it's shifting, disrupted, right on the edge of... something, waiting to happen. . My anxiety is ramped to an 11. I'm still in pain from the #uterinearteryembolization, although it's easing. My #rheumatoidarthritis + #neuropathy always get a little angry this time of year, as fall starts out wet and cold here in central Washington. I've lost a friend, finishing some long-term projects, prepping for holiday season, stressed about some big stuff. Just.... swirling bunch of feels, man. . But yesterday I was productive, even if it was painful, lol. Used the power drill to fix and hang things, and no injuries... #winning, for my clumsy self. ;) Finaaaalllly replaced bulbs in all the outdoor porch lights so that scary Halloween murder dudes don't sneak up on us. So that's cool. Put up my black @treetopia tree that I'll decorate for Halloween- the pre-lit lights are ALL burned out + I can't figure out how to fix them at this point, so I ordered lights on Amazon. Then I can decorate. 🎃🎃🎃 . Annnnd, went to dance practice with my #witches and #witchlings -- we perform the #witchedance, #wolfshägerhexenbrut, at some local events in October, and we'll hand out candy in the parade on Saturday. (Omg me walking the parade route right now = tough times. But worth it.) . Life is weird, isn't it? It's hard and there's always trauma and pain and confusion but it's so damn beautiful too, and always too short. So it's gotta be lived, hard, fully, with vigor, daily. 🖤🖤🖤 . How's your month going so far, my friends?? . #spoonielife #spoonieselfie #butyoudontlooksick #invisibleillness #wherethetiredgirlsare #chronicallyill #chronicillnesswarrior #chronicpainlife #chronicpain #chronicillness #witchywoman #halloweeniscoming #tiredasamother https://www.instagram.com/p/B2mcE4fhXEl/?igshid=12e97lje4zysb

Comparing the Difference Between UFE and UAE for Women’s Health
When it comes to non-surgical treatments for fibroids, both Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) and Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE) offer effective, minimally invasive options. However, understanding the difference between UFE and UAE can help patients make an informed decision about their treatment plan.
What is UFE?
Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) is a procedure specifically designed to treat uterine fibroids. Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the uterus, leading to a variety of symptoms like heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, and pressure. In UFE, a radiologist uses a catheter to block the blood vessels that supply fibroids, causing them to shrink over time.
What is UAE?
Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE), on the other hand, is a more generalized procedure used to treat a variety of uterine conditions, not limited to fibroids. The procedure works by blocking the uterine arteries, which cuts off blood supply to the problematic areas within the uterus. UAE can treat conditions like adenomyosis, abnormal uterine bleeding, and other vascular-related uterine issues.
Key Differences
Though UFE and UAE might sound similar due to their shared technique, they have distinct purposes. Here’s a breakdown of the main differences:
Target Condition:
UFE specifically treats uterine fibroids.
UAE is a broader term that includes treatments for fibroids but also for other uterine conditions like adenomyosis.
Procedure Goals:
UFE is focused entirely on shrinking fibroids and alleviating related symptoms such as pain and heavy bleeding.
UAE may aim to stop abnormal bleeding or manage other conditions affecting the uterus, in addition to fibroids.
Terminology Use:
Some healthcare providers use UAE as a more encompassing term, while UFE is used when fibroids are the sole target of the embolization.
Which is Right for You?
Determining the best treatment depends on your specific diagnosis. If you are suffering from fibroid-related symptoms, UFE could be the optimal choice as it is focused on fibroids. However, if you are experiencing broader uterine health issues, UAE may be recommended.
Both procedures are safe, outpatient treatments with similar recovery times. However, understanding the difference between UFE and UAE is important for setting treatment goals and expectations.
Before deciding on UFE or UAE, consulting with a fibroid specialist is crucial. They can assess your condition and provide personalized recommendations based on your symptoms and overall health.
In conclusion, while UFE is specifically targeted at fibroid treatment, UAE addresses a wider range of uterine issues. Both procedures offer minimally invasive solutions with reduced recovery times compared to surgery, making them ideal options for women seeking alternatives to hysterectomy or myomectomy.

It's #enbrel day, y'all. . Getting ready to shoot up some drugs. Stab my weekly Enbrel shot into my leg. . I haven't really felt much difference yet? Did three injections, skipped a week because, shingles, had one last week, and now today is #5. . I feel like all the awfulness I've been feeling this week maybe isn't just from the #uterinearteryembolization itself - but that maybe the procedure flared up all the other shenanigans I have. My hands and feet feel like they're made of busted up parts, like my #rheumatoidarthritis is big mad? . So... I'll just stab myself with a needle filled with super stingy medication and hope that feels better. Seems reasonable. Ha. . Life is fracking weeeird, yo. 😘😘😘 For anyone else doing #enbrelinjections for #rheumatoid -- how lingbdid it take before you felt it working? Do you think skipping a dose in the middle like I did will make much difference? Plaquenil didn't work for me. Methotrexate is out due to complications with my other #chronicillnesses. So I really, REALLY want this to work. . But so far, surprisingly little side effects -- but also no real noticeable change for the better. . #ra #rawarrior #jointpain #chronicpainwarrior #chronicpainlife #rheumatoidarthritiswarrior #rheumatoidarthritisawareness #rheumatoiddisease #spoonielife #spooniememes #chronicillnessmemes #autoimmunedisease #ibs #liverdisease #hashimotos #neuropathy #adrenalfatigue #wherethetiredgirlsare #butyoudontlooksick #invisibleillness 🖤 (at Terrace Heights, Washington) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2RxDW8hDXB/?igshid=3ebeqykxtd2d

I had my #uterinearteryembolization on Thursday. This was me, Thursday night, letting my filter match my mood, because I definitely had space drugs in that IV, ha. . I'd wake up in the bed, with a mouthful of saltine crackers, (it took them HOURS to finally bring me water, seriously, so it was near impossible to eat the crackers with such dry mouth) with my phone in my hand, all zombie style. Heavy duty stuff, I know it was fentanyl, morphine, and dilaudid. Woah bruh. . But the pain was still pretty damn bad. Worst part of the whole thing was laying flat-- I chose to do the procedure through the groin, vs the wrist, because I have tremendous phobia about things hurting my wrists. Long story, weird quirk, but it is what it is. I knew you had to "lay flat" for 6 hours. But I thought that just meant, not getting up. Nope. We're talking bed flat, you flat, only move your head side to side if you need someone to hold up a drink with a bendy straw to sip, no bending knees. . And that is HARD, because cramps make you want to curl into a ball, right? They put a bed pan under me, but I couldn't use it lying flat, it just wouldn't... go. So they would ultrasound my bladder, see it was near bursting, and had to "quick cath" me twice. After that, I could get up and go myself. But damn, that was a part of recovery that I really wasn't prepared for. . But so far, so good. A LOT of pain, not gonna lie. But I've got a few days worth of meds, fancy chocolate bars, a heating pad, and a crazy-comfy bed. So hopefully I'll be feeling better soon!! . Anyone else have this #uterinefibroidembolization done? Or have #uterinefibroids and trying to decide how to treat them? If you have questions, I'll answer. Or if you've had this done for #fibroidtreatment I'd love to hear if it worked for you, long term? . #spoonies #spooniesisters #fibroids #fibroidssuck #fibroidsurgery #fibroidawareness #chronicallyill #butyoudontlooksick #invisibleillness #wherethetiredgirlsare #spoonieselfie #ibs #hashimotos #adrenalfatigue #liverdisease #neuropathy #rheumatoidarthritis #autoimmubedisease #chronicpainwarrior #painmeds #womenshealth (at Terrace Heights, Washington) https://www.instagram.com/p/B2K6489hwEF/?igshid=17ecx3thfp7e3
