Can I ask what canvas size you usually use?
Your art is so pretty and soft and I love your style sm 💕
Usually 2000 x 2000 px! But I often crop it and it ends a little smaller actually, so lately I started using more like 3000 px
And thank you very much <3!

Hey Leah, since you're doing asks... I just wanted to tell you that you're awesome and I love the Randell series you've been doing! Also, just curious if you're still planning to do the hunger games prequel you talked about? Any spoilers you could give us for that?
YOU'RE awesome and I'm so glad you're enjoying the Randall stories 🩷 two more to go so there's good stuff coming up!!
I do, desperately, want to do the thg prequel. I've made a start on it. The thing is it's got the potential to be very long, and I'm a little short on time right now. Normally with a long story I'd just start putting out my usual 2000-2500 word chapters and let it take as long as it takes, but for the first thg story I was giving y'all 10k-15k chapters and I've been toying with keeping up that format. Except it'll take forever. So IDK. Anyway. The point is. At some point in the next few months you're gonna see it in some form. Maybe short chapters maybe long ones idk but it's coming lol
As for spoilers, how about eo's first meeting in this verse?

Welcome to Niloy November 2023!
We’re glad you want to join the fun in our inaugural year! This is something I hope to generate every November for fans of Aloy x Nil, new and old.
Tumblr media
What is it?
Above, you’ll find a table of one prompt per day of November, most of which contain special significance to the relationship between Aloy and Nil. For those participating, simply take the prompt and create something around it for that day.
What can I make?
Whatever you feel most comfortable creating!
If you’re a writer: a drabble, ficlet, even a poem! No word count minimum or maximum, but in the spirit of the event, I recommend no greater than 2500 words.
Artists can do sketches, doodles, fully rendered pieces, comic pages, whatever they are inspired (and have the time) to create.
Gif-makers, virtual photographers, and other types of visual media are also more than welcome to participate and we encourage it!
For prompts that limit gifs and virtual photography, alternates have been provided – though you are welcome to use the alternates for art and/or fic for the given dates, if they inspire you more.
In addition, you are not limited to one form of creation. If one prompt inspires art, another inspires writing, another has the perfect shot from in-game photography, feel free to mix it up!
The only ask is that whatever you create be new for the prompt. However the prompt inspires you, run with it! Some may feel “on the nose,” but those can be fun to explore metaphorically too!
What are the restrictions?
For fic submissions, please use the appropriate submission tags below the text box. All ratings are welcome provided they are properly labelled.
As per Tumblr guidelines, we cannot show any NSFW art or photomodes. If your submission contains NSFW material, please submit a suitable crop preview or censored version that can safely be displayed on Tumblr. The post will also, if possible, have a Mature community content label. This also applies for other types of Mature content.
Can I team up with someone for art or writing for a prompt?
Yes! Fics and art are welcome to inspire each other.
Where do I post?
Wherever you feel comfortable sharing. Fics should be posted on AO3 and you are welcome to share the link on your own social media or in a server. Mostly, I encourage you to submit it directly to the niloycentral tumblr.
If you have a Tumblr: You can submit it directly to niloycentral, or tag your post with either #niloynovember or #niloynovember23 – both will be tracked! You can also @niloycentral.
If you don’t have a Tumblr: You can submit the art or photomode itself directly, or link to your creation on other social media (Twitter, Instagram, AO3, wherever it is hosted) through our niloycentral submissions page using the following format:
Creator: your @(social media) or your alias
Prompt: what day/prompt you have submitted
Plus any applicable tags as per checkboxes below the submission area.
#niloynovember and #niloynovember23 will also be tracked on Twitter, but to make sure we see and catch everything, I encourage submissions to niloycentral Tumblr!
Do I have to do every prompt?
We don’t want anyone to get burnt out or frustrated. Some prompts will inspire more than others and we all have days where we just can’t. You definitely don’t have to do every prompt to be included! Your creation will be featured whether you do all 30, or 19, or 12, or if you even only do 1. You’re more than welcome to continue working on the prompts after November as well.
Do I have to do them in order?
No… but if you do submit to the blog for a prompt from later in the month, we will schedule your submission to post on the proper day (based on EST). Any submissions from previous-day prompts will be posted as usual.
Prompts are being released now, but we ask that you do not post until November 1.
Happy creating!

Rendom stuff about hilly and Os because I'm stuck in a bus and I am bored
there room mate
The house belong 100% to Hillian because his signature is on all the official houses documents
Os is basically the parent of the duo literally they keep the house clean they cook the food they shop for the grocery etc
Hillian work as a killer for hired or a more common name assassin their really good at his job simply killing someone is usually price at 2000$ , killing+making it look like an incident/suicide is 2500$ , killing+fully cleaning the crime scene is 3000$ , killing+bringing a rendom body part back to the client is 4500$ (if you want a specific body part you can make a request that would add a 500$)a really successful business with an average 3 client a day
Os don't have a job lol
They live in a forest , a cabin in the woods tipe of situation
If you pay attention to the pin post you would know Hillian is a demon hybrid and that's why they don't have their horns, demon hybrid usually grow their horns at a sernten age Hillian haven't reached this age yet
Os can sooth web from their reask , kinda like Spider-man you know since their a spider
Hillian usually get really upset/mad when someone have horns because it makes them feel like last of a demon since he don't have any
Hillian is weak to holly silver (holly silver is a special metal from heaven that could actually damage a demon) , holly waters, and any form of religious symbol
The tipe of weapons Hillian use, kindness (their axe made out of Helles gold(basically holly silver but from hell and it's gold and can damage angel's)) multipel poison lase knife, a bunch of poisonous bombs their claws and Sharp teeth
The tipe of weapons Os use guns but mainly their sniper
Hillian dad is the demon while his mom is the cat
That's all for now I'm pretty sure I'm going to add more stuff later but not now and Hillian out

OOH YAY UHMM - What's your go-to canvas size? so. uh. you may not be surprised why my art program tends to lag really bad when i tell you this. it depends if it's a smaller fun piece or if it's a big detailed shaded piece but uhh- my last piece ended up being around 2500 x 3500 and the one i'm working on now is around 2100 x 2900 i think? it depends on how square or rectangular the canvas is but i usually make them as big as i can get away with and feel like you can still see detail rather than pixels when you zoom in lol so. on average lowest would be around 2000 x 2000 and highest may be around 3000 x 4000 or something. i try to keep it below 4000 and above 2000 basically. detailed enough to be.. well, detailed lol. but not too detailed that it's unnecessary/lags the fuck out of everything. - Do you use more warm or cold colors?
honestly i've been experimenting with my shading a lot lately, in the past I usually use a dark blue color for shading and then add a few effects (color/saturation/multiply) from the original colors so it has a tint of blue but still reflects the original color, but I've been trying to experiment with it more. I did use more reds for shading in the last ghost trick piece I did even though the lighting was a solid white, the characters had a lot of red in their original color palettes so it felt fitting. (again pls don't look if you haven't played the game/watched someone else play it i don't wanna spoil anybody for the cool twists it's great <3) but uh yeah right now it's not very consistent I'm experimenting a lot more with it. in the piece I'm doing right now I have a dark purpleish color as the main shade that seems to work well with the more dull colors but with the pinks/yellows/blues i've been using the purple color on hard light or soft light to make it match better. i want the piece to have more pastel coloring by the end and i'm trying to keep the color pallete cohesive and consistent despite slightly changing the shading colors for certain pieces of the design. i think mostly it depends on if the piece is standalone or if there's a background for me to blend it into? like again in one of the ghost trick pieces i did the sky was a nice teal/blue/greenish color so I used that for some of the back shading, but it was also in front of a yellowish moon so I used that for the highlights. a nice blend of both i think.
i tend to have a blue bias for sure though lol i probably use cool tones more often, i prefer more.. not dull or desaturated color palettes but just not oversaturated? the bright colors can mess with my eyes a little so I personally tend to de-saturate colors at least a little bit. but with the current piece i've got the original colors are more saturated than i typically use so I'm trying to keep it a blend of both and keep the original saturation while still toning it down to a saturation i'm comfortable with.
but yeah i've been stepping out of my comfort zone with color/shading lately, it's been fun! thanks for the ask btw this was fun! sorry i ended up going on so long lol..

Can you tell us stuff about the Hirnedhrim that hasn't been brought up in either fic yet? Background information, stuff that got edited out, minor things that probably won't have a reason to be mentioned?
I have a couple of things.
First, have the incomplete opening to Zuste trying to write an explanation of the Fair Orc (warnings for Fair Orc):
Of the Fair Orc
The Fair Orc was so called because he had milk-pale skin, refined features, thick straight hair, and an upright posture. He looked more like an elf than an orc, but though the Men of Dunland had no love for elves they could tell he was something worse than an elf.
The Fair Orc first came to Dunland hundreds of years before the Great Plague. He came down out of the mountains and made abductions from the Dunlendings. Usually he stole young women, usually those who were out alone, but not always. He sometimes attacked small groups, he sometimes breached holdings, he sometimes took older women or men. He very seldom took more than one at once, but it was not uncommon he held more than one at once.
We don't know We aren't sure All the stories just say he ruined
All or almost all of them were returned alive, and hale in body. But Men said The women of childbearing age he begot children on and returned heavily pregnant. As for the others
We watched for when they were returned but mostly did not approach them. I hardly need say they wanted nothing to do with us Only if their family would not take them back, or if their family had been killed in their absence, or if they ran away.
They were broken. Most of them he made think they loved him. This served to make them less likely to try to kill the babe at birth, but he also did it to those who could not bear children. But that passed with time, no more than a few years and sometimes at once. He left them with strange habits.
Thinking they loved him did not keep them from knowing they feared him. And after they overcame the love, or even before, they were filled with shame.
Men called them ruined because they believed the Fair Orc coupled with all of them and that said coupling stole women's purity and men's manhood.
_____
Second, let me see… okay this is barely interpretable, but it lists all the goblin-men of Dunland I have any notes on, including rough birthdates, rough deathdates if applicable, comments on what Dacian plant name they have, whether they followed Saruman to the Iron Ring (I), refused (U), or were already dead and so not invited (D). Most of this isn't set in stone.

Third: Somewhere on this list, probably — maybe 'Kotus — is the so-called "squint-eyed Southerner" who was spying in Bree, who eventually went slinking back to Dunland when he had nowhere else to go.
Not on the list because they were probably goblin-men of Isengard, but I think the community probably includes a couple escaped ruffians, too.

Okay, after looking a LOT up: Pimsleur said on their official subreddit, that Japanese levels 1-5 have 2500 unique words. I also confused myself a bit earlier today, mixing up Pimsleur with Glossika. Pimsleur lessons generally have LESS vocabulary than some alternatives. Glossika generally has more vocabulary taught than Pimsleur. I am actually using the glossika audio files currently, NOT pimsleur.
My usual conclusions on pimsleur stand though: based on what other pimsleur users said (that the whole course only covers the material Genki 1 has), and that it has around 20 words taught each lesson, with around 2500 words if you do ALL lessons, then its not the particular program i'd choose. Its good if youre a beginner, and intend to do all 5 levels. If you are not a beginner, it may only review words you know. If you're learning on your own, consider how much you study: if you want to learn 2500 words within a certain time frame (like a year) then make sure you complete pimsleur lessons frequently enough to finish the lessons in a year (or whatever your goal is). 2500 words, or Genki 1 and 2 book's 1700 total words (which pimsleur was compared to by a pimsleur user), are useful. But they arent intermediate, theyre words you'll want to learn as a beginner and then PROGRESS TO NEW MATERIAL. Do not dwell on pimsleur for 4 years, if your goal was to learn beginner words in 1-2 years and then move on to intermediate material (but if you are okay with it taking 4 years then of course go through lessons at the pace that works for your goals).
Some information on Glossika Japanese: the current 2024 course has around 6,400 sentences and teaches a bit over 5,000 words. I had this information given to me by an official glossika representative. Unfortunately, they did not know how much vocabulary was taught in the original audio-only Japanese glossika course, which was around half as big. Their current course seems to teach to N4 (maybe N3), as the representative felt a learner could go from the modern course glossika to simple anime like Shirokuma Cafe and learn words from immersion onward. The representative also stated glossika doesnt explicitly explain grammar, so if you are NOT a complete beginner then you'll have more success. Alternatively, if you are a complete beginner, reference a Grammar Guide (tae kims grammar guide, imabi.com, Genki textbooks etc) or use another source for beginner lessons like japanesepod101.com which has explanations. My rough guess would be that old glossika audio lessons taught between 2000-3000 words, because all old courses used the same base english sentences translated, and I remember for most languages that resulted in around 3000 unique words used. So old audio lessons Glossika will teach a bit more vocabulary than pimsleur, and significantly more than pimsleur by around 2000 additional words if you use the new glossika online courses. Increased vocabulary is a plus, but the end result will still be upper beginner/lower intermediate knowledge when you're done. I'd recommend glossika over pimsleur because more vocabulary is great in a language learning product.
FREE OPTIONS:
These are what I actually recommend a learner start with. Because they're free. And they work.
Go on the Hoopla library app, or install Hoopla if you don't have the app yet. Register with one of your library memberships on Hoopla, it will give you access to tons of ebooks and audiobooks to check out. Now find: Japanese 1 Innovative Language. I personally found the audiobooks, Innovative Language has at least 9 levels of lessons from beginner to advanced. Unfortunately, I am having difficulty finding how much vocabulary all their lessons combined teaches. (A lot of language programs call some lessons Advanced when really you're only learning say the 1000-1500 most common words in them, which is still beginner level in terms of knowledge being studied or if you compare to textbook levels or language certification test levels). I am not sure if these lessons are the same as japanesepod101.com, but these lessons are similar, and they have a good amount of explanations so you can get grammar and cultural information as well as vocabulary - this means the course is more in depth than glossika or pimsleur, but it does teach a bit slower as there's more time that english is spoken. If you're a total beginner, or a beginner/lower intermediate learner who is looking for audio lessons with explanations, I recommend these. Theyre free! Theres a ton! Innovative Language also has a TON of lessons in multiple languages on Hoopla app, so browse.
Go to jaoaneseaudiolessons.com. Download the free 36 lessons, the free grammar guide, and the free transcripts. These lessons are FREE, they are made by people who have used stuff like Berlitz and Pimsleur and wanted to improve the method into something they'd find more useful. This site introduced me to the idea of "audio flashcards" audio of english then target language sentences. These lessons arent doing anything wild or new: what they are doing, is lessons like Glossika but with MORE explanation than glossika, and yet less english and less time wasting than stuff like Innovative Language. The biggest pro of this resource: they MADE a grammar guide you can use, they made a transcript so you can have your first reading material, and they made free audio. Ive used their audio lessons: they worked great for me. They worked better for me than Genki did (however Genki remains great for the speaking/writing skills i practiced with it), and helped pull me back into studying japanese. I am not sure how many words it teaches, a detail i wish ALL LANGUAGE LESSONS HAD TO MENTION. But my guess would be at least 1500 words. Their transcript book is 1075 pages, they usually introduce 1-7 new words per page, so on average 4 words, so the upper guess is they teach potentually 4,300 words in the 36 audio lessons. How is that for efficient? Even if these lessons only teach 1500 words (and i suspect the real words taught is probably the normal 2000-3000 of most beginner courses made well), at 36 lessons their lessons clock in as WAY less than Pimsleur or Glossika. These lessons recommend you listen to each lesson 5 times. So each lesson is 30-40 minutes (lets use 40 minutes per lesson), so 36 lessoms is 24 hours of listening material. Listen to each lesson 5 times, and you'll spend 120 hours on these lessons, not including time spent on the grammar guide or transcript. There is another reason i love japaneseaudiolessons.com: they wrote books that teach kanji with 1. Premade mnemonic stories (remember the heisig book expects you to make up your own stories which i found hard) 2. Mnemonic stories for meaning AND pronunciation (many premade mnemonic story resources like anki decks tend to only help with remembering definitions, not pronunciations), 3. Sentence examples to help you remember words, practice seeing them in context, and practice reading. Their books are by FAR my favorite kanji learning books. The kanji learning books do cost money, but i've found them useful and i was glad they existed. You do not need to buy the books, japaneseaudiolessons.com has a TON of free material that should get you through beginner level stuff. But if you, like me, like premade mnemonic stories including remembering pronunciations and example words in sentences, you may find checking out their kanji books is useful.

📏
I'm always wondering what size people usually use
Usually I use 2500 x 2000 px on photoshop! Used to be smaller, but larger canvases tend to look better for me so I kept doing it.
If I'm using some other program like ibispaint it's likely to be around 1000 x 1500.

I hope you're able to get a car soon. If you're comfortable sharing, what do you recommend for a first-time buyer? Miles or age a factor for you?
Thank you! And I think if you’re a first time buyer, especially if you don’t know much about cars or fixing cars, you need to be really careful. I think you definitely want a car with low mileage and not super old. My car is a 2006 Subaru Impreza, and it had 150,000+ miles on it when I bought it, and I started having problems IMMEDIATELY. I spent around $1000 on parts and mechanic services before I got the news that the head gasket was unfixable and I should just sell it and buy a new car. I also bought it from an independent seller (some guy who buys cars at his church’s auctions and fixes them and sells them) so I had no warranty or safety net when it broke so many times.
So, you’re going to want to research cars and their quirks. I wasn’t comfortable in big cars when I first started driving, so my little Subaru was the perfect size. BUT what I didn’t know is that Subarus are VERY prone to overheating and the head gasket blowing, especially in older models.
Ideally, if you’re going secondhand, you’re going to want to find one that has less than 50k-70k miles on it. You also probably want to find one that’s less than 10 years old.
You don’t need to buy a brand new fancy car, but a younger car with less miles WILL last you longer.
I also recommend not buying from an independent seller, and instead, buying from a used car dealership. Most dealerships do extensive testing on their cars and fix what needs to be fixed, and they also give you a warranty (usually around 5 years) and will fix whatever is wrong with it if it breaks during those 5 years for free. I think some dealerships also do your oil changes and break replacements for free!
Buying a newer low mileage car from a dealership IS more expensive than buying an older higher mileage car from an independent secondhand seller, but in the long run, it’s usually more worth it. I bought my first car for $5000, payed $1000-1200 in parts and mechanic fees, and now I need to sell it and buy a new car and I’ll probably only get $2000-2500 for my old car. So if you buy a car for cheap but then it breaks, it’s actually more expensive than buying a better quality car if you can afford it. Most places will give you a loan and you can buy a car from specific used car dealerships with just a down payment and a monthly payment, and in my opinion, it’s better to have a monthly payment than have an old car with no warranty or safety net. If you have a steady income, it really is your best option for making you not have to pay more down the line.
My old car was an 18 year old 2006 Subaru Impreza with 150,000+ miles on it when I bought it and it lasted a little over a year with many issues in between. I’m currently looking for a secondhand Nissan from a dealership from 2015-2020, with less than 60k miles on it and I will get a loan on it and pay for it for around 5-5.5 years!

hihihi !! came across your tumblr while looking at hermitcraft/life series art (your art is lovely by the way, definitely going into my cool people with cool art collection) , and saw that you use/used krita !! as a krita user, i would love to know your main brushes and canvas sizes, and art process too :D would love to get into things like illustration but no clue where to start ,,
hello! since i get asked about stuff like that relatively often and i'm usually too lazy to answer properly everytime i'll use this ask to answer all of those in one big post :D
Brushes
Tumblr media
i don't think i have main brushes? i jump from style to style quite frequently and i love love love trying out new stuff so the set of brushes i'm using for any given drawing can change drastically but there're a few that came to my mind
Tumblr media
i've been vibing with the first brush the most lately! it's kinda has spray paint feel to it?? but not really? idk but it's fun to make messy sketches with :D 2nd and 3rd are probably the brushes i find myself coming back to most often bc they're just really basic lol
all of the brushes ^ are default krita brushes bc i dont like downloading brushes from the internet so if you wanna find cool non default krita brushes you'll need to ask sm1 else sorry
(btw my advice: don't care about brushes. limiting oneself to a certain set of brushes can also limit the creativity so don't do that)
Canvas Size
Tumblr media
my default canvas size is 2000 x 2000 px and it usually goes up from that if i need other proportions for a piece - basically that means that the shortest side of (almost) any of my drawings is minimum 2000px (2000 x 3000, 2500 x 2000, etc). for pixel art it's the same rules but for minimum of 200px!
social media eats the quality of images really hard so i usually don't see the point of drawing on bigger canvases than that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Art Process
Tumblr media
there isn't much to say about the art process for me bc i'm sure my process is not too different from everyone else's process lol for lineart stuff it's the usual:
super messy, super quick sketch
cleaner sketch (depending on the art style and the vibe i'm going for this step can be skipped)
messy colouring (also can be skipped sometimes; this step is just for myself to find the colour palette i wanna use and to determine whether i like the drawing so far or not so i can change the idea or completely abandon the piece)
clean lineart
flat colouring + shading
adding small details, colouring the lineart, making lighting prettier, etc. (this one cannot be properly described bc for me it's usually a mess of tweaking everything and nothing until i like the final product)
Tumblr media
for lineless stuff i don't have a process - i put pretty colours on the canvas and just,, Pray for the best or smth lmao
it most likely won’t be helpful but i do have youtube channel where i (once in a blue moon) post speedpaints! they might help in understanding what my art process is
and that's it i think? i hope this was useful at least in some way :D it's not the best idea to ask me about any of art related things bc my approach to art can be summarised with throwing stuff at the wall until smth sticks lmao

Tips and Tricks For Beginner Artists
I want to preface this by saying two things. Or maybe couple more.
One: This is my first ever blog post that I have written. There will be mistakes. I am still figuring out Tumblr Blogs. Deal with me. Thank you <3
Two: I am by no means a professional artist. I am still a student. I have been doing art for little over three years now and I am writing these to share my experiences as an artist that is self-taught. Also because I struggle with the mental aspect of art. I want to share and help people that are where I once was. I wish I had found somebody to give more personal, down to the bits advice to get me into the world of digital art. I am writing about what worked for me and how I did certain things. Enjoy.
(I am largely a digital artist. This is centered around digital mediums and methods. )
This blog post will be more helpful for people that are self-teaching and just starting art.
Regardless of why you want to do art, you need adequate tools to do it.
My first and current graphic tablet is One By Wacom in Small (ought to be replaced soon). I still use it and it serves just fine. It has no buttons on it, plain design. Wacom has excellent support and works smoothly. It was also a good budget decision. If you have a tablet that comes with a pen, work on that. Keep in mind, if you are intently buying a graphic pad or a tablet for purpose of art, buy something that you won't regret too much if art doesn't work out for you and it ends up collecting dust. It is easy to upgrade once your needs require it. Research what graphic tablets are out there and what would work best for you. There is a wild variety to choose from.
Now to the art program. Finding an art program to start on is not at all hard now. There are so many, each with its own quirk. I used Krita since forever. It is very professional, much like Photoshop but also easy for a beginner to grasp. And entirely free. Find an art program that you are comfortable in. Procreate, MediBang, Clip Studio Paint, Paint Tool SAI, Photoshop are only some of the choices.
Possibly in another post I will get more into Krita and how I use it as I am very fond of it.
Set Up Your Canvas
Here I am not going to go way too much into depth on this as it can vary greatly depending on what tools you use and what program but I want to stress the importance of having a workspace that works with you, not against you. Some of the best tips I have gotten for this are:
Set your canvas to a a medium gray color, somewhere in the middle of the gray value scale. Looking at a plain white canvas is daunting and quite inconvenient when you're starting off.
Pick your resolution. Usual choice is 300 dot per inch (DPI). Size of your canvas depends on your screen/machine/program. I usually go between 2000-2500 as my PC is past its prime and doesn't handle things well without sounding like a rocket about to take off. Research what your machine can do without lag.
I will give more advice on using brushes in another post but just going to say, using plain black color is usually bad idea. At least it was for me. It amplifies mistakes and leaves little room for fixing. Instead, try using a gray color somewhere between black and your canvas color. Medium value blue and red also work fine as sketch colors.
Start Comfortably
There is no point looking at all the masterpieces that ArtStation and Instagram has to offer and setting it as your short-term goal. A biggest downfall you can have is from starting too big.
Instead, focus of doing small things. Sketch a lot. Sketch basic shapes. And draw what you love. Art is a craft of heart, at least for me. Detaching yourself from that will make art will like a chore, a cold labor that you do not enjoy.
Ahem. Anyway.
One of the best exercises I have found is to just draw lines. This you can do on paper too as it is an excellent way to warm up. Try to make a straight line. Go not too fast nor slow. Make as many as you need until you get it straight. Do the same for circles. Make them as round as you can. Your hand is the biggest trickster. It does not cooperate with your mind as well as you want it to.
Sketch, sketch sketch, get yourself comfortable with it. Everyone does sketches, one way or another. Of course, you are free to try an entire piece but it can be very discouraging when it turns out nothing like you expected it to be.
I will make a post just on the ways you can practice as a beginner.
Find Inspiration
The biggest foe of artists is lack of inspiration and an artists block. I know it was mine. Finding inspiration is way easier when you are starting off as you often want to draw everything. There are plenty of places where you can get inspiration on what to draw. Pinterest in my all time favourite. You can also look at Instagram, ArtStation, your favourite shows, camera roll, world outside. Jot down what you want to draw when you get an idea and save it for later.
Find Artists You Love
This goes for everyone, but especially if you want to get into business of art. Having artists that inspire you and whose art you enjoy seeing is a must. It feeds your creativity and helps you develop your art style in the long run.
Don't compare yourself to other artists
Often, artists you see that get most views and likes have been in it for years. Do not go into art expecting that it will look perfect right away. Art takes time. A lot of it, often. Those artists whose works seem perfect have spent countless hours on sketches, studies, classes, lessons. Stressing over why your art is not good at the very start will not allow you to move on and better. Instead, appreciate and enjoy little what you created. Everyone's art journey is different and what matters is the road, not the destination
You don't have to be a natural
I never was exceptionally good at art growing up I did have an affinity for all things creative—I had passion for it, but my skills weren't out there. Majority of artists aren't naturals. In my opinion, passion and will is more important than natural skill set. Skills can be taught but without passion and will to learn, you won't get anywhere in art.
Your journey is unique
Everyone learns things at a different pace. What works for somebody, might not work for you. We all have different minds.. That is why everyone's art journey is so unique and interesting. When I started off, I was doing things exactly as I saw others do them and it resulted in frustrations because it wasn't turning out the way I imagined it would. Beginners are inclined towards this and that's alright. But it is important to realize that there is no law out there on how you have to learn the craft. Do it in a way that is most comfortable.
For example, I have quite an attention deficit. I cannot focus on a subject for longer than 15 minutes tops. So watching hour long lessons on Youtube or reading books on the subject didn't cut it for me. I either broke it up into smaller bits and only took what I needed in the moment or looked for compact, one-slide lessons, usually with examples, to tackle a subject. Rather than being told what to do, I needed to be shown how to do it. This might not be a good way for somebody, it really depends and comes down to you. You know yourself the best.
Now for the more practical tips
Outlining
This might be a controversial one out there, but I was never a strong believer in outlining. While it can be fun and it is helpful in beginning stages, it eventually stunts your growth. Instead of simply just outlining, look at how the things work and why does it look the way it does. Break down shapes and study them. Of course, there are instances where it does help to do it and I am not saying that you shouldn't do it, I just never did it. In my opinion, training your hand and mind to follow references is much better way to study and improve.
Use References
Do it. The best of artists use them or have used them for a large portion of their art journey. Do not see reference images as a cheat for artists. Drawing from mind is difficult and not something I would suggest to somebody starting off. Instead, find several references—for poses, shapes, color palette. The more references you have, more you will learn. I use Pinterest for this mostly. As I get can very easily distracted, I usually prepare them couple of hours in advance or a whole day before and store them so I can use them in the future whenever I need.
Don't just look at at the image and completely try to mirror it. Improvise. That's how you learn. Study it. Draw over the reference and then draw next to it. Do it as many times as you want and do it on several references. Sometimes it is enough to do reference thumbnails to effectively improve your art for the day.
Learn from Other Artists
I will make a special post on what artists I watched and learned from and how the self-teaching process looks for me. Regardless of how you study art (art school or not), it is important to find as many resources and sources as you can. Do not focus too much on narrowing it down to a specific thing. Look for lectures on basics that will prepare you for any course you might want to take, especially if you are self-taught.
Practice. Practice. Practice.
This advice I got from listening to my favourite art podcast from Adam Duff LUCIDPIXUL and it gives you this comparison.
If you spend a year reading fitness magazines but never go to the gym, are you going to get fit? No.
Try to make a routine and set the time when you are free to draw. More you do it, faster you will progress and develop your skill. No matter how bad it looks to you, just draw. You don't even have to complete it. Just sit down and put something on the canvas or paper. If it doesn't work, store it and move on. You learned something and will be better next time. It only looks bad if you didn't draw anything.
I hope this tips got to you and that you find them as helpful as I did. Happy drawing!

How do you handle it when you get comments on your stories that are hurtful/upsetting? I just started posting and I'm having a hard time handling this! I don't know how you do it 😥
Oh friend I'm sorry you're dealing with hurtful comments that's the worst 💔
If it's genuinely mean, delete it. If they're a registered user you can block them and they can't leave any more comments. If they're really trying to hurt you, the worst thing you can do is respond; don't feed the trolls. When they realize you won't rise to the bait, they'll get bored and move on.
I find i don't get a lot of intentionally hurtful comments, but I do pretty regularly get comments that I think are meant to be encouraging but come off hurtful instead, and that's harder to deal with. Like for example I get "this chapter was too short!" pretty regularly. And I think what people mean, in the context of the rest of the comment, is that they enjoyed what they got so much they didn't want it to stop, but it comes off accusatory instead. My long fic chapters are always, always, always, for the last seven years, 2000-2500 words. Always have been. That is how much I can write in an hour after work and that is how much time I have to post in a day. I've got one hour from 430-530 in which to post and I do it as often as I can, and being told it's not enough starts to weigh on me. Especially bc it's the same amount it's always been! It's tempting when something like that comes up to point out how hurtful it is. Most of the time I don't; if I keep getting it from the same person over and over, though, sometimes I snap and say something about it. I always regret it; the person (usually) didn't mean any harm, and after I point out that it's hurtful, usually either they end up hurt, or I do, and it doesn't do any good.
We've talked about this before; I don't respond to every comment because I get overwhelmed and anxious and overthink it. I am grateful for each and every one, and I desperately need those comments in order to find the motivation to keep going, but I get too scared to respond. Sometimes I think if people see too much of me they won't like the work any more. So I don't put the me into the work. I let it speak for itself.
Hold on I've gotten off track the point is
Don't assume malice on the part of the commenter. It's very human, especially in this day and age, to be defensive, to be on the look out for people trying to attack us, but they often aren't. If there's any chance the comment was meant in good faith, take it as such, and leave it alone. If you're unsure about it you don't have to respond; you can let it lie, and time will pass and you'll forget about it. 99% of the time, this is how I handle comments that I find hurtful but are not overtly mean. Sometimes I slip up (this is especially likely if it's first thing in the morning, 6 am Leah is a terror) and I can say, from experience, you'll be happier if you let it go.
A thing my dad always says: be the duck. Let it roll off you like water off a duck's back, and keep moving. Don't let it weigh you down 💜

Shining Force Country Guide Translation - Part 4
The usual pie chart legend:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pao
Population: 130 inhabitants GNP: 2300 gold
Species Ratio:
The Pao tribe itself has only 130 people, but as they often take visitors on the ride as well, the population tends to fluctuate. Most are humans, as Pao citizens are racially homogeneous. ____
The transport revolution attained by the people of the plains
The Pao plains are around 1500 meters above sea level. This vast area that makes up the majority of the northern region of West Rune is entirely territory of the nomadic people of Pao. Around 2500 years ago, there was a massive immigration from East Rune, going from island to island of the Uranbatol archipelago. This group arrived all the way to these great plains after many generations, and their population slowly increased as well. It eventually divided into several tribes (still sharing the same ethnic identity) that would gather than split up again and again through their nomadic lifestyle, until an influential tribe emerged in the southeast around 2000 years ago, and got the others under their control (with an hereditary line of succession).
Paopigs were wild creatures living in the region, but being naturally calm animals, they were incredibly well suited for the nomads. They live off mostly of raising the paopigs as livestock, making dairy products out of their milk, and other specialties such as woolen goods made from paopig hair. These woolen goods in particular are valuable enough to gather merchants from other countries all year around, fighting for the chance to buy them. They mostly use the bartering system, with little interest to adopt any foreign currency.
It can be said that the adventurous and pioneer spirit of the Pao people is what made it possible to establish a nation in this region. As they continued to live reliant on the paopigs, they developed a strong faith on them as holy beasts, and thus do not eat their meat. Around 150 years ago they found by chance a huge engine in ruins of the previous civilization, and built the Pao Train. It brought a huge upheaval in their economy when it comes to the circulation of goods, and their culture has been modernizing as well. Besides that, the Pao Train also brought an energy revolution, as they began successfully using paopig excrement as fuel for it. Currently, Pao welcome a time of great changes.
-At a glance, it looks like a mere village. However, this is how Pao looks like while the Pao Train is stopped. A kilogram of paopig excrement fuels the train to run approximately 20 kilometers. The Pao Train is 300 meters long.
-The paopig's cry is surprisingly beautiful. It is comparable to the sound of a sitar (an octave higher to be precise). Such heartrending echoes deeply move the hearts of travelers around.
I'm very shaky on my translation of this caption. It mentions an instrument called カラッコ (karakko), and I could not find translation anywhere, so it might be made up? But since I was unsure I just brought up the sitar it is compared to right after.
Tumblr media
Waral
Population: 300 inhabitants GNP: 5600 gold
Species ratio:
Waral is built atop a small island. The 50% percent of "other" species here are all merpeople. While they do not show up in the game, plenty of merman live there as well. ___
The ocean people who lost themselves in the mermaid paradise
A small island country north of the Lunatic Ocean. It has the hot and humid climate of tropical rainforests, and the coast is rich in resources. At the southern coast of the island, there is an encounter of warm currents flowing north and cold currents flowing south, called "The Sea God's Cauldron", famous for the frequent shipwrecks it causes. Around 150 years ago, a fishing ship from Rindo suffered such an accident and drifted to Waral, founding the country. Back then, Rindo was still a fishing country, and their main fishing spot was the "Mermaid's Roundtable", a wide shallow beach west of Waral.
The stranded people thus settled in the island, and eventually the fishing spot to the west became their alone, as Rindo shifted to merchant activities. Even now fishing is their main activity, with 70 percent of the population working on it, and the remaining part being mostly shipbuilders and the merpeople who already lived in the region.
Back when the country was founded, coexisting with the merpeople was a huge social issue for the small island. However, Harengett Splasher II of the royal family married a mermaid, reaching a compromise between both parties this way, and it stays to this day. Some historians criticize this as a marriage of convenience.
The country was born out of an unfortunate accident, yet supported by the warm climate and its plentiful resources, the citizens are distinct for their endless cheerfulness. Its GNP of 5600 gold is third place in Rune, after Rindo. In recent years it has also been planning to expand its tourism business, as its strategic positioning right between the west and east parts of the continent makes it a country that cannot be ignored.
-It's an unusually small island, yet it is blessed with warm climate and plentiful resources. Because of this, it might be the greatest place to live in all of Rune. Its main activity is fishing, but just setting up nets is enough to catch plenty of fish, so people don't work much.
-Described by the king himself as a tropical paradise, life in Waral is full of pleasures. Swimming in the ocean, fishing, gathering shellfish and the like in the beach, there are plenty of ways to kill time. Even so, some who are still bored have began to venture into the tourism business as a hobby.
The weird royal guy name was unfortunately left for me to romanize. I have no clue if his first name means anything, but his last name, チャップチャップ, is literally "chopchop", but given that it is close to チャップン, the onomatopoeia for splashing, I feel that's what they were going for.
Tumblr media
Rudo
Population: 40 inhabitants GNP: 1700 gold
Species ratio:
Much like Manarina, Rudo doesn't look anything like a country. As said in game, it is in fact just a village. The species distribution is very balanced, excluding centaurs. Perhaps they have all gathered together because of the dragon gods. ___
The mountain village of the dragon gods' faith, declining in population
The west side of the Dragonia mountain mass is extremely steep, and this natural barrier forms an unusually long and narrow coastline between mountains and the Cypro Ocean. The village of Rudo is in this northwestern area of East Rune.
Around 300 years ago, to protect the dragon gods who were on the verge of extinction, the royals of Guardiana proposed that each country sent some settlers there, and thus the village was born. At first they succeeded in their conservation efforts, but then reached a dead end, and in recent years there has been a sharp increase in the number of people leaving the village and spreading the view that the dragon gods are over.
To show how complicated this tendency has become, the village currently only has about 40 people. It is also said that they are all children under the age of 11. The adults seem to have moved to some other village north of Prompt. The dragon god faith the adults had converted into was still deeply rooted in the hearts of the children, and some sociologists think of this village's separation as a sort of religious schism. The children, following a girl named Karin as their leader, have developed small scale agriculture and fishing, restoring the self-sufficient activities the village had sustained so far. Besides that, they have also gone past their original boundaries, advancing halfway up the Dragonia mountains and hunting there.
Before the schism the village had a prosperous fishing industry in the calm waters of the Cypro Ocean, as the gulf surrounded by sandbanks on its north and south made for a good fishing spot thanks to the ocean currents. Some think the place could recover economically fairly easily if the population problem was solved.
-Rudo village is blessed with a surrounding environment of plains and the ocean. It is hard to believe that the place is suffering from a decline in population. Going east from there, there's Dragonia, where the remaining dragon gods live.
-Since there are so many children younger than 10 gathered together,  the village is really lively. They aren't playing around, being pretty busy each with their own tasks (such as taking turns to cook or doing the laundry). Despite that, the whole village has the feel of being their playground.
