Becoming an IPR Publisher

We’ve had quite a few people contact us about selling their games at IPR recently, so here is a quick rundown of how to apply to become part of our network of publishers!

Firstly, why become an IPR publisher in the first place?

Unlike other distributors, IPR sells your games on a consignment basis. We pay publishers 80% of cover price for PDF sales, 70% of cover price for sales to customers through our website, and 44% of cover price for sales at conventions or to retailers (we get 11%, the retailer gets a 45% discount from cover price).

The cut is all the fee you'll see. IPR's cut covers all the costs involved in a sale transaction: bank transactional fees, shipping discounts for the buyer, and a modest amount for IPR to cover other expenses & profit. By sticking with a flat, covers-everything cut, your costs should remain predictable.

We’re also a destination site for retailers and individual customers, since we offer so many awesome TTRPGs in one place! Plus we take your games to conventions, including Gen Con and Origins Game Fair. We’ve also got a network of affiliates that sell at conventions under the IPR banner all over the US, and all throughout the year as well!

Sounds cool, so how do I apply again?

Then email a PDF copy of your game to us at support@indiepressrevolution.com, and introduce yourself as well!

If you don’t want to send along a physical copy of your game for us to review, for whatever reason (most commonly because international shipping prices are a beast) you can just send us a PDF, and let us know why you’re not sending a physical copy at this time.

Once we’ve got a copy of your game, we’ll read through it to make sure it meets IPR’s quality standards. What exactly does that mean? Well, as our Prospective Publisher FAQ states:

“Excellent art, professional quality layout, attractive and eyecatching cover design, meticulous editing, well-written text, and a compelling rule set and/or setting. These are the criteria on which all submissions will be judged. If your product is lacking in any of these areas, it might be rejected. We are looking for products that make us sit up and take notice.”

We also will not take any games that contain bigotry in any form. As we always say, IPR supports trans rights and BIMPOC creators and gamers. Fascists, Nazis, and TERFs can all fuck right off.

Now I will say that if you’re even thinking about maybe submitting a game to us, do it! Even if we reject your game at this time, we will always give you clear feedback on exactly why, and we are always up for giving advice on how to make your game retailer-ready!

If you’re approved, then we’ll send you a contract to read through and sign, get you set up with an IPR Publishers Account, and tell you where to ship your product and where to enter information so we can get the products set up on the site.

This all sounds pretty good but I’m still nervous! Do you, AC, the person writing this who is also the person that approves all incoming products to IPR, have any tips for me?

I do! The main thing is to read through our Prospective Publisher FAQ before submitting anything. Everything I just wrote out here is on that page, but it also has plenty more info that is good to know before working with IPR.

Seriously, I can tell if you’ve read through our FAQs before submitting, and while I absolutely will not judge your game based off of that, it does help everything go much quicker and smoother, and I appreciate it greatly.

We’re also not generally looking for large TTRPGs at the moment. Shipping prices are awful and only getting worse, so hefty games that weigh over two pounds are not our top priority.

Furthermore, we only deal in physical books. We sometimes take PDFs if they’re a supplement for a game we already have in stock, and if they don’t have a physical version available. But really PDFs just don’t sell through us! You’ll have much better luck on itch.io or DriveThru, trust me.

Finland acquires JDAM and SDB I weapon systems for its F-35 fighters

The Patria and the Finnish Defense Forces signed a service agreement to develop the capabilities of Finland's F-35 program, specifically purchases of JDAM and SDB I ammunition.

Major General Jari Mikkonen, Head of the Logistics Command of the Finnish Defense Forces (FDFLOGCOM) signed the contract for the acquisition of JDAM and SDB I ammunition for the F-35 multifunctional fighters on February 29, 2024. The Finnish Minister of Defense authorized the Logistics of the Defence Forces Command to conduct the acquisition.

The object of the acquisition is the JDAM and SDB I systems with related equipment and services in the years 2024–2030. The acquisition is referred to as the Total Package Approach (TPA), which means that, in addition to the JDAM and SDB I pumps, the acquisition includes transport sets of BRU-61 ammunition, training material, manuals, spare parts, accessories, transport services and manufacturer instructions, as well as training services and supplier support. Contains spare parts and support services for manufacturers and suppliers by 2030.

The acquisition contract is in dollars and its indexed maximum price is US$ 96.1 million. Purchase payments will take place during the years 2024-2030.

The acquisition will be carried out in accordance with the Foreign Military Sales (FMS) procedure between the authorities of the USA and Finland, in which the Defense Forces Logistics Command will conclude the acquisition contract with the United States administration.

The JDAM (Joint Direct Attack Munition) is a modular guidance kit for 500, 1,000 or 2,000 pound bombs of the Mark 80 series. In addition to a guidance kit, a fuse or sensor is installed in the pump, depending on the intended use. A bomb equipped with JDAM can perform precision attacks on fixed or mobile targets at short range.

The SDB I (Small Diameter Bomb I) is a glider pump capable of accurately hitting medium-range targets. Thanks to the relatively small size of the pump, a fighter is able to carry a larger number of SDB I bombs at a time.

Guided bombs and glider bombs are part of the weapons acquisition package that allows the Finnish Air Force to have the ability to support other Forces in combat activities. The weapons of the F-35 fighters from Finland will be acquired in stages until the year 2035. The phased implementation of the acquisition of weapons will make it possible to optimize the composition of weapons as the Finnish F-35 program progresses.

"Some of the types of weapons to be purchased can also be used with our current fleet of F/A-18 Hornet. Therefore, when we make the transition to the F-35, we will be able to profit from the skills and experience in systems acquired so far," said the Director of the F-35 Program, Colonel (retired), Henrik Elo.

Kenjiro Takayanagi of Shizuoka University is considered one of the main pioneers of television, succeeding in displaying the character イ (i) on his Braun tube display in Dec 1926. Over the next few years, he improved the image allowing more detailed images such as human faces.

By 1939, Japan's first television station began broadcasting from NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation). After the war, Takayanagi Sensei's work was used as a foundation for other televisions and related industries around the world.

If everyone thought working on a second cell phone after they'd spent months making one was bad, they're not ready to hear about what they'll need to make for television broadcasts. (Senku also never changes...)

SAL 9000 is a reference to HAL 9000, the AI antagonist from Space Odyssey. It stands for "Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic computer", so in this case it might be "Senku programmed" or even "Sai programmed"!

The "NES" (actually the Famicom again, both in the drawing and Sai's comment in the Japanese version) and SAL 9000 don't have the exact same specifications:

SAL 9000 is specialized for math operations and thus has a longer word length (16 bits vs 8) which allows more significant figures in the numbers. They've also got more RAM (SAL has 16 kB while the NES has 2).

The downside is that because they used parametrons, their clock speed (how fast they can do calculations) is slower than if they'd used transistors.

The large amount of ROM they've also got could imply that they have several built-in programs. Xeno's work, perhaps?

CRT screens only reach a maximum diagonal length of around 40 inches (~101 cm), as a larger screen needs a larger tube, and the thickness of the glass increases with size to handle the vacuum without shattering making it very unwieldy with the added weight and thus not worth manufacturing for sale.

Senku's here is obviously much, much bigger. Possibly even world record; the biggest CRT screens made were 61 inches (~152 cm) on the diagonal.

SAL 9000 has both air and water cooling, probably used depending on what's better for individual parts. Normally you only need one or the other.

It'd be good if they could get the carbonated water maker in there and ferment some alcohol faster too using the computer's heat…

SAL 9000 also has 3 phase power like modern power transmission. They're AC power sources, phase shifted by 120° so that at any point in time, their sum is 0. The advantage to this is that you don't need return lines for the current, so you can use half as many cables.

The games shown are inspired by Tetris (featuring Ishigami Village and Roppongi!), Pacman, a combination game of Gyruss and Tempest, then another combination game of Galaga and Asteroids.

The transmission towers can only be headed towards the dam, so we have an approximate direction for where that is! There's a few rivers nearby in modern Tokyo, but over 3,700 years they've probably changed a lot.

Jaguar XKR “Badcat” 

Launched in 1996 and always more of a grand tourer than an out-and-out sports car, the Jaguar XK8 shared its chassis with the Aston Martin DB7, making it the thinking man’s choice for anyone in the market for a powerful, rear-wheel-drive luxury sports car.

Whilst those figures might be impressive for the XKR; it wasn't quite enough for our petrolhead vendor Graham, who in 2007 embarked on a 13-year journey to improve and modify the once standard 1998 XKR into this stunning 632hp unique Jaguar, more commonly known as the ‘Badcat’

The Badcat started life as a 1998 Jaguar XKR, which Graham saw for sale in 2007 and having a soft spot for the X100, plus having been looking for a car for a while, this was snapped up straight away. Driving the car for a few weeks was enjoyable, but as with any petrolhead, it wasn’t long before Graham started looking into tuning options for the XKR.

This started with a smaller top pulley and larger bottom pulley fitted to the supercharger, and this was complemented with a Racing Green ECU piggy back upgrade to keep on top of the fueling due to the faster spinning supercharger. The result was 456hp, an impressive 64bhp gain from the standard bhp.

With the 4.0 litre pushed to its limits, Graham was on the lookout to further improve the performance of the XKR, and this was the start of taking the car to an entirely new level. Graham found a new Range Rover 4.4 litre V8 which became the next base for the project. The engine was rebuilt using stronger high spec’ bespoke forged pistons from German automotive parts manufacturer Capricorn, which kicked off the need to have parts purpose made rather than buying off the shelf items.

The upgrade to the 4.4 litre brought the power up to an impressive 480bhp; it was never quite enough, and the need for more power continued. This need was realised when in 2012 when Graham, assisted by Jaguar expert Tom Lenthall, found an uprated Eaton supercharger which was originally destined for an XKR GT3 racing car. This was fitted along with some other improvements to bring the XKR to 510hp.

In 2016 whilst on a track day at Goodwood, flying at over 140 mph, the 4.4 litre detonated, melting five out of the eight pistons. The cause was put down to poor fuel pick-up from the standard Jaguar tank, which would later be resolved with a bespoke designed, foam-filled ally fuel tank with swirlpot fabricated by CKL Racing, containing two Walbro 450 high-pressure fuel pumps. Only one of the pumps is needed and more than capable of providing enough fuel for spirited driving; the other pump was simply fitted as a backup. Luckily the cylinder block suffered only minor scoring and was sent off to be rebuilt at performance engine experts Classic and new forged pistons from JE in America. This gave Graham the opportunity to develop even more power, and with a freshly built engine, a new twin-screw supercharger, a Whipple W175AX, was sourced from the USA. Although being told it would not fit by the company director, Graham had other ideas. With some well calculated CAD drawing and CNC machining, the charger was made to fit, pushing the XKR to the enormous power it now produces.

Fed bars former Santander Consumer executive over high-priced gifts

The Federal Reserve has banned a former Santander Consumer USA executive from the banking industry for improperly accepting high-priced gifts such as Super Bowl tickets and luxury hotel stays.

The former executive, Brent Huisman, “routinely solicited and accepted” gifts from auto auction companies that worked with Santander Consumer, the Fed said in an enforcement action made public Thursday. Huisman consented to the issuance of the order.

Huisman previously reached a settlement over the issue with Santander Consumer, which had sued him for accepting the gifts and for the misuse of confidential information. He had also agreed to pay $275,000 to Santander Consumer, the subprime U.S. auto lending affiliate of the Spanish banking giant Banco Santander.

Huisman accepted more than $1 million in gifts from auto auction companies, including Kentucky Derby tickets, first-class airfare and sponsorships for youth sports teams he coached, Dallas-based Santander Consumer said in its lawsuit.

Santander Consumer also alleged that Huisman and his wife used credit cards from an auction house that worked with Santander Consumer. The two used the cards to pay for sporting goods, airline tickets and a yacht rental in Cancun, the lawsuit said. The company said that it learned of the gifts after Huisman’s departure.

As the company’s senior director of asset remarketing, Huisman worked with auto auction companies to sell repossessed vehicles or cars that came off leasing arrangements.

He left Santander Consumer in June 2019, two months after asking staff to print confidential spreadsheets and presentations that contained company sales data and its fees with several vendors, the lawsuit said. He would later use those documents at an unnamed Santander Consumer competitor, according to the lawsuit.

The lawsuit said that Huisman’s conduct disrupted Santander Consumer’s business and harmed the company’s reputation and relationships with current and potential business partners.

Huisman’s lawyer did not respond to a request for comment. Santander Consumer declined to comment.

The Fed’s enforcement action prohibits Huisman from working for a bank without the central bank’s prior approval. Violations would open him up to further civil or criminal penalties.

I’d seen a little squib on CNN the day before I wrote the above entry. I believe that it said most heart attacks in the USA are at 9am Monday or on Saturday. It also said that 20% of US workers call in sick  because they just don’t feel like working. I think it was 20%.

As you can see from above and from the photo of this page I will post after I post this entry, at 9:30am 10/25/2004, fellow attorney Gene Trimble called to tell me that Superior Court Judge Wray Ladine died of a heart attack in the court house earlier that morning!

When I interviewed for a DA job in Modesto in The Spring of 1984, Wray Ladine, then a Deputy District Attorney, was one of two Da’s to interview me. I had also applied to work at the Stanislaus County Public Defender’s office. The Da’s office didn’t hire me. But, thg Public Defender’s office did.

 Wray Ladine died in the courtt house 10/25/2004.  What I heard was, the weekend before his death, an ambulance had been called to judge Ladine’s  house, but, he sent it away. He only had one case on in his Department, Department 8 that morning. He wasn’t supposed to be in that day,

At around 8:20am, before the case was called at 8:30am, he was sitting in a chair outside of his chamber’s by the bailiff’s desk. A Deputy District Attorney, and a Female probation  officer were in the area. 

They heard the judge’s pencil drop. They turned to watch  him collapse to the floor, dead. The court house community was horrified. For me, Department 8 has never been the same. 

So, kind of uncanny that I wrote about Monday morning heart attacks at 6am that morning. 

At 5:03pm, I noted that the #2 story on KCRA 3 TV News out of Sacramento was about Judge Ladine “Died in his chambers” A judge from 2000-2004.

Margie and Denny were my partner Jim’s mother and older brother.

They lived in San Luis Obispo County, a 4 or 5 hour drive from our house in Modesto.

They left for home that day, October 25, 2004..

It was the last time that we saw Margie in person before her death in April 2005.

On 10 February 1954, after seven years of investigation, the Food and Drug Administration finally served Reich with a twenty-seven-page complaint, containing a proposed injunction against the inter-state shipment of accumulators. The essence of the Complaint was that the orgone accumulator did not work—could not work, since orgone energy did not exist. It cited various publications by Reich to show that he believed the accumulator could cure cancer, but made no mention of the various qualifying clauses Reich himself had added in The Cancer Biopathy.

Dr Charles Kelley, in an article on ‘The Life and Death of Wilhelm Reich’, has described the Complaint as ‘so vicious, so false, so twisted and sick, that it was difficult to believe it could ever be taken seriously in court’. But a study of the actual Complaint (reprinted in full in Jerome Greenfield’s Wilhelm Reich versus the USA) hardly justifies that description. Taking into account the basic attitude of the FDA—that Reich was a crank—it is, on the whole, a fair and balanced document. Moreover, if the FDA believed that there was no such thing as orgone energy—and that therefore the accumulators were worthless—then they had no alternative than to try to prevent their use; for patients who relied on them rather than on proper medical attention were placing their lives at risk.

Reich should have been rational enough to see this, and to concede that in future the accumulators would not be shipped across state lines. Instead, he made his most appalling mistake so far—possibly the greatest single mistake of his life. Instead of appearing in court to try to try to explain his position, he wrote the court a rambling, four-page ‘Response’, quibbling about whether the FDA was the ‘US Government’, quoting Abraham Lincoln on freedom, and talking about ‘conspirators whose aim is to destroy human happiness and self government’. Reich’s main argument was that the court was trying to interfere with the course of scientific investigation; therefore, he said, he did not intend to appear.

Reich was missing the point. The FDA was not trying to interfere with his research; only with the sale of what they considered to be a quack remedy across state lines to finance that research. But the whole tone of the Response was bound to irritate even the most open-minded judge. Its last sentence: ‘ ... I submit that the case against orgonomy be taken out of court completely’, sounded like a challenge. The judge took the view that the Response was a ‘crank letter’, and the FDA seized the opportunity that Reich had offered on a plate by demanding a default injunction against him, which Judge Clifford promptly granted.

In retrospect, it is almost impossible to understand what made Reich play into the hands of his opponents. For this was not simply a question of being forbidden to ship accumulators across state lines. The sting of the Complaint was contained in its penultimate paragraph: a plea that Reich be forbidden to do ‘any act whether oral, written or otherwise’ to promote the sale of the accumulators. But the Complaint lists a dozen or so of Reich’s publications which could be regarded as ‘promotion material’. It included The Function of the Orgasm, The Cancer Biopathy and most of the later books, including The Murder of Christ. In effect, the FDA was asking that all these works should not be sold outside the state of Maine. And here Reich was on very firm ground indeed. The most incompetent lawyer in America would have pointed out that this was a violation of the right of freedom of speech, and that the suppression of books—except on grounds of obscenity—ran counter to the whole spirit of the American Constitution. No court would have granted such an injunction under normal circumstances, and the FDA probably took it for granted that the judge would refuse to ban Reich’s books. By writing the court a defiant ‘crank letter’, Reich took the only possible step that could have led to the suppression of some of his most important works.

The question of Reich’s motives will probably never be clear. The most obvious explanation is that his persecution mania had reached a point where he believed that the banning of his books was as likely as the banning of the accumulator. But surely any lawyer—or for that matter, any intelligent American citizen—could have told him he had a powerful case? Here the answer could be that Reich’s followers were deserting him in droves—and that those who were left accepted whatever Reich said or did without question.

There remains one other hypothesis that seems to me plausible. As long ago as 1920, Reich had identified himself with Peer Gynt: ‘It is the story of an individual who ... gets out of step with the marching column of the human herd. He is not understood. They laugh at him when he is weak; they try to destroy him when he is strong.’ Reich had written his own scenario, and the thread of ‘outsiderism’ runs throughout his life. He almost gives the impression of being determined to be misunderstood and rejected; to be understood and accepted would embarrass him. And the later identification with Christ suggests that, unconsciously at least, he wants to be crucified. The root of the urge could lie in his sense of guilt about being responsible for his mother’s suicide; but this ‘Freudian’ explanation could be too glib. It seems just as simple to say that his belief in his own genius was linked with a romantic conviction—based on self-pity—that greatness invites martyrdom. For what would Reich have done with success and world acclaim? It is impossible to imagine that haunted, suspicious face relaxing into a smile of reconciliation. If Reich had been given the Nobel Prize. his acceptance speech would have been a torrent of reproach and scorn. His unconscious mind was geared to the idea of persecution and martyrdom.

Going to expand a bit on the "or else."

I was at a group thing the other day and heard someone older (sixties-seventies, not sure of her exact age) asking another woman where she'd gone for vacation because she had such a nice "healthy tan."

I cringed just hearing that phrase -- an advertising myth from a bygone era, which survived longer than its contemporaries such as "cigarettes are good for you" and "children should eat more lard." I'd just finished sorting some publications for a sale, and I read an article in one of them that forcefully reiterated how there was no such thing as a "healthy" tan, all tanning is a sign of irreversible skin damage, and we should all be wearing sunscreen daily to stave off deadly skin cancers -- the diagnosis of which was climbing at record rates compared to other types of cancer.

We've known since well before the invention of the World Wide Web that unprotected sun exposure can actually kill you, and yet people are still going out without sunscreen -- or even deliberately tanning because "I just want to look good for the wedding," or "I'll get a little tan first so I don't burn," or whatever reason.

Everyone's skin can be damaged by the sun, regardless of skin color or pigmentation. The results of cumulative sun damage aren't just freckles or dryness or leathery texture -- it can be basal cell carcinoma, or melanoma, or squamous cell carcinoma, or even merkel cell carcinoma, which is the deadliest form and often metastasizes to other organs, such as the brain or lungs. (Even when treated successfully, it has a ~40% chance of recurring within 3 years.)

If it sounds like I'm trying to scare you... well, I am. I've had numerous family members and acquaintances diagnosed with skin cancer. Sunscreen (or equivalent gear; see below) is cheap insurance, and it could literally save your life.

Choosing a sunscreen

Not all sunscreens are created equal. Mineral sunscreens (those made with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide) are generally better choices; they're more shelf-stable than chemical sunscreens, and offer full-spectrum protection. They're also better for the planet -- most chemical sunscreens are actually toxic to marine life and coral reefs, and should never be used at the beach or around waterways. (Some sunscreens advertise "reef-safe" or "reef-friendly," but those terms are unregulated, so anyone can use them regardless of ingredients. Here's a guide to choosing a true reef-safe product.)

Chemical sunscreens that contain active ingredients such as homosalate, avobenzone and oxybenzone offer full-spectrum protection when new, but only remain at peak effectiveness for a few months in storage (and break down more quickly in high-temperature environments, such as a hot car). Chemical sunscreens should not be stored from year to year. If you have chemical sunscreen left over from a previous year, it's probably expired and will not provide full protection.

Both kinds of sunscreens come in a variety of forms, including sprays, creams, liquids, and solid sticks that you can apply as needed. Choose the type that works best for your own skin and convenience.

For daily use, it's a good idea to wear a sunscreen with SPF rating of at least 15. A lot of daily facial moisturizers contain a light sunscreen, so you can just put that on in the morning to protect yourself from casual sun exposure. If you're going to be outside for any length of time (mowing the lawn, watching a sporting event, going for a walk, shoveling snow), go with SPF 30 or higher. (I wear SPF 50+ any time I'm planning to be outdoors, because I'm pale and at high risk.) Be sure to reapply as directed.

If you're worried about the cost of adding sunscreen to your daily regimen (and yes, some varieties can be pricey), here are some places you can get free or lower-cost samples to get you started. (These are USA only, since that's where I'm based, but you can Google "free sunscreen sample" to check what's available in your region.)

LOTS of sunscreen companies offer free sunscreen wipes or sample packs at large events such as state fairs, concert festivals, sporting events, etc., so keep an eye out if you go to a big outdoor event!

If you don't like the idea of slathering your body in sunscreen, there are other sun protection options available. One of my go-tos is UPF-rated clothing. Whenever I know I'm going to be out in direct sun all day, I wear a long-sleeved, zip-up UPF 50 swim shirt that provides the same or better sun protection as wearing SPF 50 sunscreen. Because it's a thin, lightweight material designed for swimming, it's not hot -- I even wore it in the Sahara desert.

(It's a selfie, so you can't see much of the shirt, but I wore this thing all over Egypt, Jordan, Türkiye and Greece. I also wear it for, y'know, actual swimming.)

UPF shirts come in many styles, with and without zippers, pockets, or hoods:

UPF clothing is sold at sporting and outdoors stores (such as REI), as well as on Amazon and other retail sites. Depending on style and features, they run between $20-$60 -- or about the cost of two to four tubes of sunscreen. I paid about $25 for mine several years ago, and I've DEFINITELY gotten my money's worth out of it.

While it's still best to wear sunscreen on any exposed skin (including ears and lips!) when outdoors, you can also reduce direct sun on your face by wearing a broad-brimmed hat. Try to choose one that's solid material, rather than a straw hat with open weaving or holes that allow sunlight through.

In conclusion...

None of us enjoys thinking and stressing about all the ways our environment is trying to kill us, but using sun protection is a simple habit to get into, and it's an easy way to stay safe while still enjoying outdoor activities.

In short: Wear sunscreen.
