Walked pass Nine Fresh (九鲜) in Sun Plaza and mum wanted aiyu jelly dessert. Their seasonal Sour Plum Ai-Yu Series promotion is still on even though it indicated only till 15th July 2024. You also receives a set of Vouchers with a minimum spending of S$9 during their 12th anniversary celebration.

Bought both the A and B items on the menu and topped up S$1 sweetened red beans for the two cups. Mum got the Sour Plum Ai-Yu A (蜂蜜寒天青梅爱玉冻) which comes with sour plum aiyu, honey popping jellies, kantan jellies and taro balls.

I took the Sour Plum Ai-Yu B (珍珠芦荟青梅爱玉冻) with sour plum aiyu, aloe vera cubes, black pearls and taro balls. The jelly is infused with the salty and sourish flavours of sour plums which in turn adds a refreshing profile to the otherwise sweet dessert.

Black Pears Journal
Monday 10/25/2004 Just past 6am. still dark.Black Pearls Journal
Quotes from the National Best Seller “Black Pearls."
ANGER;  “ When you clench your fist, no one can put anything in your hand, nor can your hand pick up anything.' Alex Haley from “Roots”
On this day, I…..ponder existence,
Monday’s true spelling is anger.  The heart stops at 9am. Denny and Margie here. Intense, Burt fun. They sleep.
Think I’ll take the afternoon off. Call in sick. Vacation.Day Off. Lu day. Day to detail. Note. Notice. Collect. Appreciate. feel. To be. Huge effort. To get. To here. Take the day off. Off. Off what? Off the hook? Off means “In”.   In. Joy. Meant. I like goofing off more than Money. From Alan Watts book.
End of entry
Note:
I’d seen a little squib on CNN the day before I wrote the above entry. I believe that it said most heart attacks in the USA are at 9am Monday or on Saturday. It also said that 20% of US workers call in sick  because they just don’t feel like working. I think it was 20%.
As you can see from above and from the photo of this page I will post after I post this entry, at 9:30am 10/25/2004, fellow attorney Gene Trimble called to tell me that Superior Court Judge Wray Ladine died of a heart attack in the court house earlier that morning!
When I interviewed for a DA job in Modesto in The Spring of 1984, Wray Ladine, then a Deputy District Attorney, was one of two Da’s to interview me. I had also applied to work at the Stanislaus County Public Defender’s office. The Da’s office didn’t hire me. But, thg Public Defender’s office did.
Wray Ladine died in the courtt house 10/25/2004.  What I heard was, the weekend before his death, an ambulance had been called to judge Ladine’s  house, but, he sent it away. He only had one case on in his Department, Department 8 that morning. He wasn’t supposed to be in that day,
At around 8:20am, before the case was called at 8:30am, he was sitting in a chair outside of his chamber’s by the bailiff’s desk. A Deputy District Attorney, and a Female probation  officer were in the area.
They heard the judge’s pencil drop. They turned to watch  him collapse to the floor, dead. The court house community was horrified. For me, Department 8 has never been the same.
So, kind of uncanny that I wrote about Monday morning heart attacks at 6am that morning.
At 5:03pm, I noted that the #2 story on KCRA 3 TV News out of Sacramento was about Judge Ladine “Died in his chambers” A judge from 2000-2004.
Margie and Denny were my partner Jim’s mother and older brother.
They lived in San Luis Obispo County, a 4 or 5 hour drive from our house in Modesto.
They left for home that day, October 25, 2004..
It was the last time that we saw Margie in person before her death in April 2005.
Black Pearls Journal was a journal book I bought at a yard sale. It had not been written in. Each page contained  a quote from the book Black Pearls and the prompt “On this day, I…” followed by a blank space for you to write your thoughts.

Another Steven Thompson ripoff.
For anyone wondering, those are supposed to be starfish, but could read just as well as leaves of some sort.

Summary: Okoye and Aneka have a heart-to-heart.
A
fter the incident, Okoye’s life went on. She moved up in the ranks in the military. She grew a close bond with the royals, and even more her sisters-in-arms. Time went on, but a little part of Okoye’s mind still have a certain melody in her head. She chalked up to her parents giving her a lullaby when she was younger. What was odd Okoye would get a sharp pain in her temple when thinks about the melody for too long. She put the memories of her parents on the back burner, she needed to focus. She had too many things on her plate between being only four women away from becoming one of the generals that the royals trusted and needed for guidance. Okoye knew she couldn’t afford her mind to think about memories that made her heartache.
“Hey me and Ayo are going out for drinks tonight wanna come?” Aneka asked the pair to end their duties as guards for the day.
Okoye shook her head, “Love to but I have to meet with my uncle tonight.”
Aneka groans as she leans her body on Okoye, “What does that old fart want?”
“Who knows,” Okoye said absently mindedly. She had her theories one of them was him pushing W’Kabi on her. To her uncle, the marriage would work better for his political career. With all the tribes, the border tribe was viewed as less important than the rest. Many people view the border tribe as less technology advance than the rest; to Okoye, it makes sense that they would be technologically less advanced because they were the cover for the outside world. Okoye learned quickly if she wanted to be the change for her country. She can’t so much focus on petty squabbles within the court.
“Plus,” Okoye started as she bumped her arm on Aneka, “This might be your chance to get Ayo’s attention.”
Aneka looked away from her, “I have no idea what you are talking about.”
“Hmm,” Okoye responded as Aneka started talking about something else than her adoration of Ayo. Okoye willingly lets her spin her tale about what the princess did today. The young child was a handful. Okoye prayed to Bast that she never have children or if the goddess wanted her please let her children be less of a handful than the princess.
“How the Queen can handle her and her brother. Thank Bast I like women,” Aneka finished her tale. Okoye shook her head, “You know women can still have children, right?”
Aneka waved her hand, “I know. I know you know what I mean ‘Ko. I just hoped Ayo is the same way we can be the best aunties for brother’s children together.”
“Seems you guys will have much to talk about,” Okoye said as she slowly parted away from her friend.
“Yeah, that’s if she even likes me,” Aneka mumbled as she kicked an imaginable rock. Okoye could feel her eyes roll back in her skull. These two Okoye sighed as she touched Aneka’s shoulder, “She will. Trust yourself, sister.”
Aneka gave the biggest smile at Okoye, “You’re right. What’s not to love about me?”
“I didn’t say that but-”
“I’m hot, have a great personality. Ayo has no choice but to fall in love with me,” Aneka rattled off as she started walking to the bar to meet her soon-to-be-girlfriend.
Okoye have a kind smile before her face soured as she walked close to her uncle’s home.

Was out shopping with mum and chanced upon the seasonal Honey Peach Ai-Yu Jelly Specials promotion for the month of March 2024 at Nine Fresh (九鲜). Decided on the spot to buy both the Honey Peach Ai-Yu A and B with added sweetened red beans (+S$0.70).

I know that mum wouldn’t like the chewy black pearls so I gave her the Honey Peach Ai-Yu A (草莓蒟蒻桃子爱玉). Hers came with the honey peach ai-yu, konjac jellies, strawberry pearl jellies and taro balls.
Tumblr media
For my Honey Peach Ai-Yu B (珍珠椰果桃子爱玉), it has the same honey peach ai-yu jelly and taro balls but with nata de coco and black pearls. The sweet, pretty and ‘peach-ture’ perfect new seasonal desserts are such a thirst-quenching treat for our increasingly humid season.

To commemorate Black History Month (1 – 31 October), this joyous portrait of trailblazing black fashion models (or “perles noires” if you prefer. I admit I had to Google "beauté a croquer." It means "beauty to eat" - what an odd expression!). It’s always fascinating to see early Grace Jones (her recording debut wouldn’t be for another three years with the 1977 disco album Portfolio). Seeing this makes me recall the line Eartha Kitt purrs in 1975 blaxploitation classic Friday Foster: “A superior being. A vision of Africanic beauty. A black goddess come to earth!”
