October 11 - Molly D had a pleasant and short (27.5 miles) trip from Worton Creek to Annapolis. The hardest part of the trip was watching for crab pots.
Approaching the Bay Bridge
Car carrier ships are huge!!
Upon entering the harbor, we noticed an abundance of anchored boats. In all our years coming into Annapolis at boat show time, we have never seen so many boats.
Harbor full of anchored boats
And still more boats!
Saw this beauty! Our former Molly D.
We arrived at the gas dock at noon. Molly D was a bit thirsty, but after all she has been motoring for six days. After we settled Molly D into her slip we went ashore—as in touch your feet to real terra firma! The last time David and I had been on terra firma was on Monday. What an odd feeling!
Our first stop was at the boat show will call window. Island Packet was very kind to have free tickets for me and David and for our friends, Bob and Wendy. Our next stop was at one of our favorite restaurants, Potato Valley. Bob and Wendy met us there. Yes, we had baked potatoes for lunch and they were so good!
I dragged everyone to my favorite kitchen shop that happened to be a few doors down from Potato Alley. Bob and David went outside to wait while Wendy and I shopped. We all needed a break so we went back to our respective boats. David and I weren’t back at the boat more than 15 minutes when I received a text from Leslie at IP. She really needed our help at the IP show booth. Could we help out? So, David and I went to their rescue. I spent time talking to people as they were waiting to board the boat. David and a couple of other guys did a couple of runs to the IP owners car to get supplies for that afternoon’s owners’ reception. Tiring but fun.
At 7:39 we finally got back to Molly D to relax. A busy, but fun day. Tomorrow morning we will meet Bob and Wendy and cruise the boat show. We also have dinner reservations at a local restaurant. Another tiring day lies ahead of us. Awesome!

PURSUIT IN PASSING When you glance south and see four lanes on two bridges of Highway 101 traffic, roaring past at 110+ kilometres per hour – it's hard to imagine that this narrow span once welcomed most drivers between Halifax and the Annapolis Valley. Horton Bridge was covered, solid wood, but somewhat rickety and only one car wide. As the main crossing over Gaspereau River since at least the 1870s, it was only a postwar boom that started plans for replacement. When its time came up in 1952, they dynamited the structure and let the tide take the rubble, rather than deconstruct it piece-by-piece. A pre-fabricated Bailey bridge took its place until 1960, when the first of the two big green bridges used today were finally completed. Now, the old Highway 1 is marked as a dead end from both directions, but you can still walk down from either and stare off into the mud and mystery. I'm often pulled for that pursuit in passing. Just close enough to the past to keep from getting sucked in. September 20, 2024 Hortonville, Nova Scotia Year 17, Day 6158 of my daily journal.

Car crashes into woman's dream home in Annapolis Valley
An Annapolis Valley area woman is shaken up after a vehicle crashed into her home early this morning.
Three people were taken to hospital and released, but the home was extensively damaged.
Tonya Ward and her family were just waking up on Saturday morning when their dream home turned into something out of a nightmare.
“It sounded like an earthquake had happened,” Ward said. “The rumbling and the glass smashing, and it went on for an extended period of time before it stopped so we were hearing them come through the yard before the big boom happened.”
That big boom was the sound of a vehicle crashing into the side of herhome.
Shortly after 7:30 a.m. A car went off Sherman Belcher Road and flipped into the air, hitting a tree, and crashing into in the house, causing extensive damage and scattering debris around the yard.
“Everything was just a complete haze of dust,” Ward said. “I could hear my grandmother in the bedroom, calling for us, but I couldn’t see her, her bedroom door had come off its hinges and was across the other room.”
The car had smashed directly into Ward’s grandmother’s bedroom, pinning her inside. She was taken to hospital, but remarkably suffered no injuries.
The two passengers of the vehicle were also sent to the hospital with undetermined injuries, but have since been released.
The house has been in Ward's family for more than 50 years.
Now the family, including Tonya's grandmother, partner, four children and a number of pets, aren't sure what will happen to the home.
“You know, I’m really shook up right now,” she said. “It's an old house, it's been my childhood dream to one day own the house. We've been enjoying living with my grandmother and her interactions with our kids and now the family is displaced and separated for the time being.”
It's not the first time that the house has had a close call with vehicles going off the road, which has a posted speed limit of 80 km/h.
“In the past 12 months, we've responded to approximately three rollover motor vehicle collisions with entrapment, where the jaws of life had to be used,” said Kentville deputy fire chief Scott Hamilton.“Two of those in the last month or a month and half, so it's definitely an active section of road there that we've responded to.”
Ward hopes that the accident leads to changes that will help preserve the safety of her dream home.
“We have upwards of two to three accidents a year,” she said. “Some of them due to the fact that I don't think people realize how sharp the corner is coming up, some of them speed. Any amount of moisture on this road you instantly hydroplane. We've asked that the RCMP do something about the speed limit, decreasing it, and proper signage for the turn up there.”
Mounties went to the scene to investigate, but there is currently no word on whether charges will be laid.

Garage Door Repair Service - Things to Stress More Upon
Everyone would want a good and properly working garage door. Manual or automatic door is not the issue here. The point is that the door is working properly whenever needed. Imagine leaving your house on a Monday morning to attend a meeting in your office. Everything's prepared in advance the night before. Files are arranged neatly in your leather case, shirt and trouser are washed, ironed and smell nice with mixture of perfume and soap.
You're all set, ready to go, and just as you're setting your coffee mug in the car compartment and press the remote for the garage door, all hell breaks loose. The garage door is jammed, with your car still inside the garage. This is the moment that you curse the garage doors , and wishing that you had parked your car in the carport outside the garage last night. Well, there's not much to do now but to open the door manually, by brute force if necessary with the cost of ruining your clean shirt in particular and your day in general.
The above description is not a good picture. But that's just by chance, you say. There's nothing to be done that will let us know whether the garage door will be jammed that particular day, you say. Well, not exactly. This article will discuss in general the usage of garage door repair service - things to stress more upon that will save you from days like this. Obviously, repairing a garage door is best to be done by expert, and unless you are confident enough to fix machinery and physical structure and willing enough to spend extra time wrestling with a broken door, it's suggested to contact local repair service. So, after agreeing that you'd rather spend your time drinking beers while somebody else fixes your garage doors, here are some tips for Garage door repair service - things to stress more upon.
Do regular checking based on symptoms, not until a problem actually shows.
This is probably the most basic tips. One of the reasons of fatalities in medical is due to late treatment. The best thing to do when you hear squeaking at the door railing, try to apply some oil on it, and if the sound doesn't disappear, it's time to call the repair service, not put it behind your head and hope it will go away.
Be detailed in your problems, and ask your repair person to be detail.
One thing to be clear, it's a repair person's job to repair your broken utensil (hence the title), and it's your right as a customer to request the best service being given to you. However, they're not fortuneteller who can foresight a problem just by checking (again, hence the title), so to be fair, you also need to be detailed in telling them the symptoms that you experience that lead to the repair person standing in front of you.
Ask for regular service and maintenance
Sometimes, a problem doesn't show any symptoms before it actually happen. That's why most repair service will have regular visit for maintenance for you to use. And it's best to use it. There's no harm in having the repair person come once every few months to check things.

Scenic hiking trails, relaxing beaches,
cool craft breweries and lots of lobster—there are definitely so many fun things to do in Nova Scotia, and sometimes driving yourself is the best way to experience all the attractions. This is true of my flexible self-driving trip to Nova Scotia with Canada by Design, which gives me the opportunity to discover interesting things at my own pace which allows me to focus on my quest for adventure. Adventure in the best bucket list for you.
[toc]
1. Visit the UNESCO Town of Lunenburg
Lunenburg could have a things-to-do list of its own! The port town of Lunenburg is a historic Nova Scotia coastal community that has the well-deserved title as a UNESCO world heritage site. Whether you take in some shopping, dine at the quaint restaurants or stroll along the waterfront you will be in awe of its charm.
Start your day with a cappuccino and a little shopping at the Shop on the Corner. Afterward, hit up Ironworks Distillery for a short tour and a taste of delicious raspberry liquor.
Make a stop for lunch at Salt Shaker Deli whose name is deceiving because there are much more than just sandwiches! If it’s docked in town, set sail on the tall ship Bluenose II, a replica of the famous fishing and racing schooner. For dinner head to the trendy Lincoln Street Food where you can nosh on vegan fish and chips or beet gnocchi with chanterelles.
2. See the UNESCO Landscape of the Grand Pré
Lunenburg isn’t the only UNESCO World Heritage Site in Nova Scotia (there are five!), you can add the landscape of the Grand Pré to that list. The 5 square mile landscape is located in the Annapolis Valley’s Bay of Fundy.
The marshland and archaeological sites are a testament to the technology from the 17th century. The best glimpse of the landscape drive to the View Park on Old Post Road.
3. Witness the Dramatic Changes in the Tide
Nova Scotia has some of the most dramatic tide changes in the world (at a rate of up to 1 inch per minute!!). Hall’s Harbour is a small fishing village where not only can you eat at the local lobster pound, but it is also the best place to witness these tide fluctuations.
At low tide the wharf is completely dry, leaving the fishing boats sitting on the rocky floor of the harbor. But if you time it correctly and return about 6 hours later, the boats are bobbing in the water ready to fetch some fresh fish.
4. Go Tidal Bore Rafting
The Nova Scotia tides cause 160 billion tons of water flow through the Bay of Fundy twice a day, which feeds into the Shubenacadie River. This surge of seawater creates a once-in-a-lifetime adventure like no other, tidal bore rafting.
It’s a wild ride where you will zip through up to 10-foot waves, they will crash over your motorized raft drenching you from head to toe or submerging you completely. If you have only one adventurous thing you do in Nova Scotia, this is it!!
River Runners, Shubenacadie River Adventures and Fundy Tidal Bore Adventures are among the most popular games, plus great reviews.
We chose the latter of the three because it was a shorter excursion (2 hours versus 3 1/2 – 4) and it included mud sliding where you can roll down hills of fluffy mud until you are not only wet but also covered in mud.
5. Make a Call From the Luckett Vineyard Phone Box
At Luckett Vineyards, not only can you get a taste of the locally grown grapes, but you can also make a free call to anywhere in the United States from inside the famous Phone Box! This booth is sitting in the center of the vineyards.
If you’re feeling especially winey, take the Magic Winery Bus who will not only stop at Luckett Vineyards but three others too.
6. Take a Candlelight Graveyard Tour in Annapolis Royal
If a spooky adventure is what you need to do on the Nova Scotia bucket list, then don't miss the chance to visit the oldest English graveyard in Canada by candlelight. The Garrison Cemetery in Annapolis Royal comes alive with a fun tour that starts at Fort Anne.
Tour Annapolis Royal will guide you through the graveyard telling stories of the people who lay there, dating back to the 1700s. Some of the tombstones are so old that they have lost their facing!
7. Walk on the Ocean Floor
Nova Scotia has some of the most severe tidal fluctuations, with an average tide of 47.5 feet. If you have the exact plan to catch the low tide at Burntcoat Head Park, you can take a walk on the ocean floor.
There are not many other opportunities to walk for miles on the bottom of the ocean without getting wet! Have fun exploring the small leftover pools of saltwater to see what types of marine life you can find inside. Maybe a crab or mussel?
8. Drive Cabot Trail on Cape Breton Island
The Cabot Trail is a 185-mile driving loop that has picturesque lookout points, miles of hiking trails, lush forests and 360-degree beauty, plus quaint crafty shops, harbors and delectable fish eateries.
It is a drive where you can take a walk on the beach, take in the scenic vistas, eat lobster rolls at the Rusty Anchor and pet some four-legged friends at the Groovy Goat Farm. Don’t forget to make the quintessential Cabot Trail stop — hiking the Skyline Trail.
9. Hike the Skyline Trail
You’ll know you’ve reached the Skyline Trailhead by the dozens of cars that line the entrance. This hiking trail is the most famous attraction on the Cabot Trail and for very good reason.
It will not only give you the most incredible views, but you will also have the opportunity to spot a moose (we saw 3!). Make sure to ask the hikers you pass along the trail if they saw Bullwinkle on their route and how far back, so you can catch one before they retreat into the dense brush.
The full trail took us about 2 1/2 hours, but if you are strapped for time when you get to the fork in the trailhead left to get to the boardwalk view and then turn around and come back the same way you came instead of completing the loop which can add up to a half-hour.
10. Go Back in Time at the Fortress of Louisbourg
The Fortress of Louisbourg will bring you back in time to a busy 18th-century seaport. It is the largest reconstruction project in North America, a quarter of the walls and a fifth of the town has been restored back to an old French town.
Once you are greeted at the front gates, you will be immersed in a different life where elaborately dressed actors enhance the experience by roaming the streets and putting on a show with everyone they encounter.
Some will be acting out a scene from the second story of a window, while others will be shooting muskets at the range. There is always some sort of action going on at the Fortress!

A Hairy Science Project (Post 123) 1-13-16
Nicholas had a science experiment while he was a student at Excelsior Middle School that is famous in our family. Pam and I were always pretty hands off with respect to that type of assignment as we thought that parental domination of school activities can be pretty smothering and lead to dependent behavior that inhibits initiative and accountability. The most extreme example of out of control parenting was something that a friend shared while we were midshipmen at the Naval Academy. He was one of my classmates, and upon discovering that I was from the Akron, Ohio area my friend told me that he had participated in the famous Akron Soap Box Derby as a kid. I remember seeing pictures of the homemade race-cars in the paper that I delivered each morning, but I never attended.
My classmate explained that the kids in his neighborhood of Annapolis all took turns either winning or doing very well in the annual competition because their fathers were on staff in the USNA Engineering Department and which gave them access to a wind tunnel to test their derby entry each year. My head nearly exploded as the racket was described. A cabal of fathers colluding to leverage their access to specialized government lab equipment for the purpose of manipulating a win in a kid’s competition repulsed me. Teaching kids to cheat seems to be exactly what parents should never do.
More interested in allowing my kids to get hands on experience building stuff, I usually just acted as safety observer when Stephen and Nick put together Pinewood Derby cars and Gutter Regatta boats for scouts. With Nicholas’ homework, I participated only when he had an assignment that mandated parental participation or when he brought a question to me on his own initiative. My parents had brought us up to be as independent as possible so I tried to do that for my children as well. Certainly that worked out well for Abby, but with Stephen and Nicholas there were plenty of bumps in the road.
One of the bumps in the road for Nicholas was his science project. Always a procrastinator, Nick invaded my bedroom in the evening of one work night and announced that he needed help on a project. He had a guilty look on his face, which he didn’t understand was an open invitation to cross-examination. In very short order, I established four very disturbing facts: the project was due the next day, the project had not been started, the assignment had been made approximately two months before, and Nicholas’ approved project proposal was on hair growth.
Now because most households today have access to the internet and also have at least one blank folding poster board lying around, completing a project in one night is definitely doable. Nostalgically, I recalled that a standard project in my day was a diorama requiring only cotton balls, a shoe box, construction paper, glue and some plastic figurines of some sort. Everybody kept that stuff around and a Sunday night emergency project was definitely feasible back then too.
Unfortunately, an emergency science project on hair growth is a total non-starter. Nicholas learned a valuable lesson about procrastination that night – unfortunately, the lesson was not that procrastination was bad, but rather, that self-aware procrastinators should carefully avoid proposing projects that require painstaking, prolonged and detailed records of experimental data. Even Chia pets can’t grow their hair in one night. Nicholas’s project was totally doomed.
We came up with something, though. I believe that I even clipped and donated a lock of head hair of some sort as a sample. In my memory Abby succumbed to a giggle fit when she reviewed the final train wreck that Nick was carting off to school the next day. A clump of hair, a graph with two data points, and some informational printouts all garnered from Wikipedia undoubtedly was all that was there.
In my day an equivalent half-hearted last minute submission would have been a collage of pictures all from the stack of National Geographic magazines that were obligatory for any fully-equipped basement or attic in the 70’s. It would have garnered a well-deserved F or D-. Nicholas’s project didn’t receive a failing grade, though, because these days the only way to fail a project is to express a Christian viewpoint. Still Nicholas project certainly tested all the teacher’s self-esteem protection fail-safes. His hackneyed mess stood out in full regalia among the highly glossed projects many of which appeared to have been produced by marketing firms.
Nick’s last minute hair project does make me chuckle, but it also could serve as a metaphor for what it must be like for an atheist or agnostic to discover Jesus late in life and decide that they better get cooking. I understand that no one can earn their way into Heaven, but the parable of the servant burying gold certainly makes me self-conscious about whether I am accomplishing enough as a Christian. I wasted a good amount of my early years chasing worldly things, so my batting average with respect to living my faith has only truly improved over the last decade. Luckily God loves us all very deeply.
A Christian understanding of God is that He loves us very much even to the extent of sacrificing His Only Son for our salvation. Implicit in His great love for us and consistent with my experience, God will do everything in His power to achieve our salvation except violate our free-will.
Ostensibly, I sought God to some extent for many years, but I didn’t search very effectively and I question how motivated I was to encounter The Holy Spirit, a meeting that would have served to curb my worldliness. In my view, once a person becomes truly convinced God exists, then sinfulness becomes really really problematic. Up until God proved His existence definitively to me during my journey with Pam’s illness, I always rationalized my sins by the argument that because I wasn’t 100 percent sure that God existed, my sin was understandable and defensible under the subterfuge of my doubt.
My feigned ignorance and unsurety about God made my continued sinful ways explainable rationally. I tried to live my life in a Christian fashion and tried to do what I could to earn by merit what we can never earn by our actions until it was time for a good bout of sinning. In those cases, I would “extinguish my belief,” flip the God light switch to the off position so that, in my mind, I became invisible to Him, my Guardian Angel and all the other souls in Heaven and Purgatory, for my sinfest. Then after the sinning was done, in remorse, I could reenter the universe of God like the Millennium Falcon dropping to sub-light speed. Then it was off to Reconciliation for a quick car wash and a return to my daily Christian hypocrisy.
In many ways I was a functional agnostic hedging my bets through many years of Christian seeming pantomime. Then, one day, I needed God to be real. In desperation and fear at Pam’s early diagnosis, I truly wanted to encounter Jesus in a way that would extinguish all my doubt because I needed for our lives to matter and for a merciful God to be running the whole show.
So I skedaddled across Ignacio Valley Road from John Muir Hospital where a surgeon was operating on my Pam’s brain. I needed to find an occupied Tabernacle and I was sure that one would be present in the sanctuary of St John Vianny Parish, arriving there in desperation, I fell down on my knees and met Him and knew that He was there, in the place that I needed Him to be - where He had always been all those times that I had been pretending to look for Him. No ruby slippers needed to be clicked.
Here in this time between Christmas and Lent as I type away at the start of the week, I am thankful for having been assured about the existence of God. That I 100% believe, is a great relief to me as uncertainly only leads only to unhappiness and fear. Belief in the afterlife resolves all the anxiety for me. God truly does set me free.
Anyway, the Donnelly family is happy to be through the holidays, but for a late believer like myself, each day seems a bit like Ebenezer Scrooge’s Christmas Day. In this New Year, this 2016, I will have the opportunity to prove that I believe, strengthen my belief through participating in the Church and happily, like Ebenezer, I discover each day that I have still more time. My Christian project can still be done properly. While I cannot claim that I have or even can earn an “A” with regard to my Christian behavior, I can prove that I grasp the concept through acting as Christ instructed us to behave towards others. Although I surely will sin, I can do so without pretending that God does not exist. I will not mentally negate Him, but instead I will do my best to proclaim Him in this Jubilee Year of Mercy. Thanks be to God.

The Locksmith And Their Specialization
When it comes to a locksmith, most people have the notion of a person who is responsible for making and repairing locks. This type of wrong belief arises as no formal education is required to become a locksmith. But with rapid development in technology and gadgets, the market is filled with a wide selection of locks, which has resulted in widening the scope of work for the professional. This article informs about the different kinds of Locksmith services available.
Residential Locksmith
A residential locksmith is the commonest form of the service provider to be found in the neighborhood. The services that these professionals are required to provide include loss of keys at home or somewhere else by the homeowner. In most of the cases, residents living in apartments, condos, or private homes look for residential locksmiths. The usual task they do include adapting the locksmith system of the main door and providing a new set of keys for working with it. These professionals are knowledgeable enough to recommend the right security setup to customers.
However, for businesses, schools, or offices, the commercial locksmiths are called to offer their services. This type of professional is skilled in establishing the security of the premises and also installing authorized access to employees. Bio-metrics is one good example of authorized access found in most offices.
Institutional Locksmith
Although institutional locksmith seems similar to that of a commercial locksmith, their working is not the same. The services of commercial locksmiths are considered on a contractual basis or it could be on an hourly rate. The institutional locksmiths, on the other hand, are hired to work as part of the employee network. The institutions that require these professionals' services are universities, colleges, government facilities, and hospitals. In addition to performing the typical job of a locksmith, these professionals are also required to perform other tasks and responsibilities that a regular employee does.
Forensic Locksmith
The job of a forensic locksmith is the most challenging and exciting among the different fields of the industry. The job requires the skill of a professional and the persona of an investigator. In any criminal investigation, forensic locksmiths work by making use of a special set of tools that help them in finding out how the hacking of a security system, a lock, or a key system took place. They are required to provide necessary evidence about the crime scene, and also provide facts that they have collected and which would help them in identifying suspects.
Auto Locksmith
The auto locksmith is required for any kind of lock and key problems related to cars and other vehicles. They are the lifesaver of those who meet have lost their car keys or find their door not working properly. It is in these emergencies that the auto locksmiths are called to provide their valuable services in opening the vehicle efficiently without doing any kind of compromise to the lock of the car's door or windows. To provide their services, auto locksmith makes use of specialized tools.
Emergency Locksmith
The role of an emergency locksmith is to offer their services 24/7, whatever time of the day or night it might be. It could be an intruder breaking into the house or some property, auto keys not working properly in the middle of the night at a highway roadside, and similar other emergencies. Irrespective of the time and place they are called, an emergency locksmith is always ready to provide their services. These locksmiths are also known as mobile locksmiths.
Qualities of a Good Locksmith
It goes without saying that the job of a locksmith is an important part of everyday life and should not be taken as something not worthy of consideration. It should be noted that special roles are played by locksmiths to fulfill the different needs related to locks, and accordingly, their specialization also varies.
Irrespective of the service required, it is important to be careful when hiring the services of a locksmith, and that means setting standards when selecting a locksmith; after all, you don't want that a professional does the unprofessional task and waste your valuable time.
The job of a residential locksmith is to open locked doors and duplicate keys in residential properties. And a commercial locksmith is skilled in offering high-end sophisticated lock facilities and equipment to government and corporate clients. Their requirements are mostly to beef the security of the commercial facilities to ensure that the right security exist.
Nowadays, most of the locksmiths are skilled enough to offer services related to locks and make sure to provide added security using technologically advanced locksmith equipment that is available nowadays. Nowadays, the rapid technological advances have made it possible to design and manage key control system for homes and establishments for installing high-end security systems.
It is important that the locksmith hired is licensed. This makes sure that the professional coming to provide services is well-trained and is capable of providing quality services to your expectation. It needs mentioning here that many locksmiths are out there who claim themselves to be professionals, though they do not have the necessary skills and knowledge. If an individual locksmith is being hired, ensure that the necessary documents are verified to find if he is a licensed locksmith. There are many people who prefer to hire the services from reputed locksmith companies, provided the cost of services is within budget. But for those who are on a tight budget would still find someone who is skilled enough to offer the level of services required and are within budget.
In addition to having the license to offer their services, a professional locksmith should have good knowledge of what they are doing. The benchmark to go for here is the number of professional services the locksmith is in the business. You could ask the professional on the different types of locksmith services he is capable of offering to clients. This would come as a great way to assess the abilities of a locksmith. You could also find out the feedback from the past clients of a locksmith company as a great way to know the service provider better.
It is important that the Locksmith hired is a reliable one, which requires the professional to be there at home or at the office whenever their services are required. A good professional makes sure to provide the time and attention that are required by the clients, even if that means the problem is a simple one.
For those who are hiring a locksmith for the first time, the searching and hiring process could turn out to be hard at the beginning. However, if you know what qualities a professional locksmith should have, the hiring process becomes much easier.

Top 10 Summer Vacations 2018
And as Canadians continue to struggle with a weakened dollar and creeping fuel prices, should we consider packing up the car and the kids and make a road trip to southwestern Ontario or perhaps east to Prince Edward County and the beaches of Sandbanks or go further afield and splurge on a trip to Paris for a little je ne sais quoi? Whatever your summer vacation plans, here are some tripstations options to make following your summer vacation dreams a reality.
Prince Edward County, Ontario
Six friends and former Toronto neighbours have gathered at a Cherry Valley cottage for a Good Friends and Good Wine weekend in The County to reunite, reminisce, and share some laughs over the incredible wine, food and friendship The County has to offer. We linger over a late breakfast of fresh fruit, yogurt and savoury scones and lots of hot, head-remedying coffee before we trundle ourselves into our van for day one of wine tasting, shopping, and memory making. And, like the rural quaintness of the French River of Nova Scotia and the excitement of the Napa Valley of the 1980’s, the County has grown up! Our rustic next door neighbour is growing up and attracting local, national and international attention offering exciting wineries, farm to table restaurant choices, unique shopping, local artisanal foods and cheeses, and serving up a warm-hearted and generous way of life, steeped in rural tradition with just a hint of modern thinking.
Prince Edward County continues to captivate her visitors with a spirit and engagement that is exciting to witness.
Halifax, Nova Scotia
Planning on heading east from Toronto this summer? Then make Halifax, where friendly Haligonians enjoy their music-filled pubs and rooftop patios, a must-stop on your Atlantic adventures. I just returned from five rather cool, rainy and beer-soaked days in this historic gateway to the East Coast, but the soggy weather certainly did not dampen the locals’ spirits in their rowdy, packed bars, pubs, and patios, literally spilling over with plentiful and flowing local craft beer. Grab some food, quaff some ale, and if you linger into the evening, you will be treated to one of the many local bands that pump out long sets of popular and traditional music to the hand clapping, spontaneous dancing revelers that Halifax is known for.
Nova Scotia
The Princess of Acadia chugs her way into the grey, fog-swept Digby Gut and gracefully docks, allowing eager camper-vanners, Japanese tourists and some home-sick locals to disembark and begin their summer vacations or to simply ‘head home.’ The 3-hour crossing has been uneventful, other than a possible breach sighting of some whales as we approach the Digby Neck. Nestled between South Mountain and the Bay of Fundy lies the fertile Annapolis Valley, Nova Scotia’s farming center and we have 5 days of touring and exploring the coastal roads of the Annapolis Basin, including some family time, some great meals and cocktails on sunset decks, watching the clammers clamber over the low-tide mud and a slowly rising full moon, begging to be howled at.
Southwestern Ontario
Ontario’s Southwest is perhaps one of the prettiest and rural parts of the world. This time of year the western sun sits lower and more reflective on the gently rolling hills west of Toronto. Travel the 403/407/401 route and avoid the headache of the 401/427/403 interchange hassle. Once past Milton, you’re home free and will enjoy the beautiful green, undulating summer landscapes and rich farmland west of Kitchener, New Hamburg and onto Stratford and St. Jacobs. Looking for more adventure? Continue up to Ontario’s West Coast and Lake Huron, Bayfield, Goderich and north towards Southampton, famous for its fabulous sunsets and on any given Saturday summer evening, be serenaded by the skirl of a bagpipe at the foot of High Street.
Toronto
Toronto is a four-season city full of eating and drinking patios, fabulous roof-top hotel views and foodie neighbourhoods, brimming over with tourists and locals alike. We love our city in the spring, summer, and Indian summer-fall and have been known as well to plop ourselves down on a winter-white park bench to extend our patio cravings. As summer approaches, we have some recommendations to make your Toronto stay-cation a memorable one!
Quebec City
La Belle Ville de Québec is home to the continent`s first parish Church, its first Museum, first Anglican Cathedral, first French-speaking University and the continent’s oldest Hospital. At first glance, no romantic, French glamour to be seen nor the apparent sprucing up that La Ville undertook for their 400th anniversary a couple of years ago. But very soon a warm and welcoming magic will embrace you as you pull up to your Relais and Chateaux listed Auberge Saint-Antoine, situated an ancient stone’s throw from Le Vieux Port in La Belle Ville’s Old Lower Town and feel your excitement grow in anticipation of your vacation in La Belle Ville de Quebec!
Michigan
Summer isn’t the only time to experience the shores of western Michigan. Ice cream, fudge stores, family dining, unique antiques, lovely beaches, quaint B & B ’s and a well established Artists Community await those who hop in their cars and do the 6.5-hour drive from Toronto to this undiscovered and virtually unknown to Canadians, part of Western Michigan. Unlike those mid-summer bathing togs and sun hats, Michigan’s fall harvest flannels, coveralls and snow pants can be a bit more unkempt and rustic. But don’t let that stop you from heading west along I-69 to Flint, flanking to the north of Lansing before merging onto the I-96 toward Grand Rapids and experiencing this unique part of Western Michigan.
Provincetown, Massachusetts
Dreaming of an all-American, bunting and burgers kind of summer beach vacation this year? Then the hurdy-gurdy, loud lewdness of Commercial Street in Provincetown, Massachusetts is for you. Join the throngs of foot traffic that daily battle the crowds of car-laden, lost tourists on the one lane, one-way main street that dissects downtown PTown from east to west. The West End beckons the party boys and their boozy BFF girlfriendz, the Bears, the Muscle Boys and yes even some well-heeled Cape Cod Tourists and Boston Ferry Day-Trippers, kids and strollers in tow, sharing some casual West End Herring Cove or Racepoint Beach time with a saucy drag queen. Ahh, summer in this, the first and original summer beach resort in America.
Vermont
The Blackburn and Suessdorf standard ‘Moonlight in Vermont’ softly serenades as a languid late afternoon summer sun greets us as we roll through the beautiful Green Mountains of Vermont. It has been a long 9-hour drive, and we are in the middle of Vermont ski country, in August, and neither of us ski. Our hotel’s website offers outdoor activities such as ‘romantic sleigh rides’ and ‘grab a pair of snowshoes’ but we have decided to discover the beauty of Vermont with the last waning days of a hot, dry summer and tour the green, rural roads of small-town New England. Southern Vermont resorts offer a unique style of vacation and are completely different in harvest ‘moonlight’ August than they are in the ‘icey finger waves’ of February. From hiking Vermont’s state parks or fishing and wildlife viewing to those simply craving quiet downtime or a ‘romantic setting’ long weekend at a luxury resort as we were, there is nothing like a summer vacation in Vermont. Enjoy some country luxury, indulge in some downtime, wander in the green. ‘You and I and moonlight in Vermont’: beautiful in any season.
Paris
When you think about Paris, which tripstations does ALOT, you probably think about the Eiffel Tower; Bateaux Mouches rides on the Seine or perhaps un café or demi-litre of white wine in cozy, cobbled pavement cafés –the usual, touristy things to do in Paris. Why not wander away from the ‘usual suspects’ and explore some of the more unusual things to do in Paris, experiencing a taste of what local Parisians enjoy every day, and especially in the summer, when most Parisians exercise their four-week August vacation options and exit the city to the countryside and seashores of the south and west.

7 Brutally Honest Marketing Conference Survival Tips
Ladies and gentlemen, I think we can all agree that IMPACT Live 2018 was absolutely fantastic.
With more than 500 of our closest marketing and sales friends, we all experienced two very full and memorable days of learning, meeting new people, and having a total blast while doing it. (You can check out the recaps here and here.)
Here's the thing, though.
Marketing conferences -- especially the good ones -- are exhausting marathons that leave me at once elated and energized to take action, and completely and utterly ready to embrace a new life as a human contact-avoiding hermit.
In fact, this was me last Thursday, the day following IMPACT Live 2018:
I spent the entire day on the couch in our office, hiding behind Bear, our team's cuddle consultant, while I did work.
This emotional and physical deflation isn't a new experience for me. This was my second IMPACT Live, and I've been to INBOUND three times.
I also know that both INBOUND and Content Marketing World are just around the corner. So, I want to take a few minutes this morning to share with you my favorite tips for surviving conferences -- and not the usual, "Oh, yeah, don't forget to network," kind of tips.
I'm talking about my favorite ways to get the most out of these epic, inspiring events without losing your sanity.
#1: Dress with Some Sort of Layering Strategy
Conference venues are fickle, independent ecosystems that have little to no regard for seasons, weather patterns, or expectations of attendees who wish it to be not too hot or too cold.
And often, rooms within the same venue will vary drastically from one to the other in temperature.
Bring a blazer or wear a light sweater with you each day, even it's the middle of summer. It doesn't matter if it's basically Death Valley or the dead of winter outside. You may freeze or, alternatively, remain a hot, sweaty mess indoors, depending on how effective (or functional) the venue's air conditioning or heating system is.
If you're a female, don't forget to carry a hair clip or band with you in your bag, so you can quickly toss your hair up, as needed.
Which leads me to my next clothing-related piece of advice...
Like most normal people, I try to pack "lean" when I'm traveling for work. Even though I rarely take a plane -- I'm an Amtrak kind of gal, and I'll explain why later -- I just don't want to deal with the hassle of having a ton of luggage.
It was so ungodly hot in Hartford last week (and a touch on the warm side in our venue), that a few folks from the IMPACT team actually made a quick run to Target to buy some new clothes to wear while at the conference.
For the same reason, it was also not uncommon for IMPACTers and IMPACT Live attendees to perform a quick costume change during the day (or before evening festivities), because staying in the same outfit all day in 95+ degree weather would have been gross.
Here's another related truth:
I can't go a week away from home for work without at least three coffee-related shirt fatalities -- particularly if we're talking about conferences, where I'm spending at least 50% of my time rushing around. (I'm not really strong in the coffee-while-walking department.)
The moral of both stories is simple -- while you might need to put a little extra effort into closing your carry-on or suitcase, it's worth it to toss in a few extra shirts and underthings.
Whether you're , sitting in an audience, or speaking in front of one, being around people comes with the territory of marketing conferences. You want to feel comfortable and at your best as much as possible.
A fresh shirt can do just the trick, so pack one -- there may not be a Target near where you are.
#3: Mind What You Carry
Last year, when I got home from INBOUND, I had trouble bending over, or turning left or right at the waist for about a week.
Of course, I had no one to blame but myself.
I had spent the week prior carrying a 2010 MacBook (which must have weighed 1,000 pounds), three notebooks, books I had purchased from the gift shop, pens, business cards, a hairbrush, my wallet, and much more in a tote slung over my left shoulder.
Conferences involve a lot of walking. But because you usually don't get to go back to your hotel room until late in the evening, after the day is done, there's this compulsion to carry everything you could possibly need with you.
Learn from me. Resist this urge to be a pack mule as much as possible. If you don't, you will be miserable, and there's a good chance you could hurt yourself.
Here is what I carry now, after learning this lesson the hard way:
iPhone (and earbuds)
iPhone charging cable (and wall plug)
Small travel wallet (not my usual big wallet, and it only contains my ID, credit cards, a little cash and credit cards)
MacBook (now much smaller and only 3 pounds!)
Hairbrush (and clip)
Travel-size deodorant
Small body spray or perfume
Chapstick
No books. No planners. No extra notebooks or water bottles. No extra weight.
I may end up coming back each evening with additions to my daily haul -- like swag or books I've purchased, etc. -- but I spend most of my days only carrying around exactly what I need, and nothing more. And my shoulders and back are forever grateful.
What ends up going into your daily bag will likely be totally different from what goes into mine, and that's okay. My only request is that, before you walk out each morning, you take a long, hard look at what's in your bag and ask yourself, "Do I really need all of this?"
#4: Don't Skip Meals
Even though I'm a huge fan of food and an avid snacker, I'm awful at breakfast. I don't know what it is, but if you want me to put anything in my face besides black coffee before 11 a.m., you'll have to force me to do so.
The exception is when I'm at a conference. For example, every morning at each INBOUND I've attended, I've stopped by the New England mecca, Dunkin' Donuts, for coffee and a breakfast sandwich. I do so under duress, but I know I'm saving myself a potential disaster later on.
In a surprise to no one, I've also learned this lesson the hard way. I won't go into details, but I was hangry and exhausted, and everyone around me suffered.
Even if meals are provided by the conference organizer, the line may be insanely long -- or you may miss a meal entirely due to conversations with your team or new contacts.
If you hate breakfast like I do, suck it up, and eat a banana or something. If you miss lunch for some reason, don't skip it -- make it a point to take a quick break and grab a protein box from Starbucks. Finally, I don't care how tired you are at the end of the day, eat something before you go to bed.
Conferences are an endurance test, so don't run on empty.
#5: Don't Forget Your Business Cards
I don't need a lot of explanation for this one, so I'll cut to the chase. Not so long ago, there was a 9-out-of-10 chance I would forget my business cards when packing for a work conference. And, being me, I would only discover my oversight in the middle of a conversation, when someone asked me for mine.
Don't be like me. Pack your business cards in your suitcase first. Every. Single. Time.
#6: Don't Stay Out Late Every Night
At most of these conferences, there are nightly networking events and sponsor parties. Also, if you're like us at IMPACT, you'll have client dinners, team bonding meals, and many hotel happy hour opportunities all over your calendar.
Besides eating, not running yourself into the ground (or, let's be honest, not partying too hard in the cocktails department) is the most important thing you can do to keep yourself in tip-top shape at a conference.
While I know how awful it feels to miss out on a good time just as much as the next person, you don't have to go to every single party or event. Or, if you do, you don't need to stay until last call.
Not only will you have a better chance of getting a good night's sleep, you'll keep your reputation in tact by not accidentally going overboard in front of coworkers or valuable new connections. Given how tiring these events can be, you have to recognize your tolerance may be lower if you're sleep-deprived, dehydrated, and/0r running on an empty-ish stomach.
(My usual rule of thumb is that I'll give myself one moderately "fun" night. Otherwise, no matter what post-session events I attend, I'm in my hotel bed watching Murder, She Wrote by 10 p.m.)
#7: Finally, Try Taking the Train
While trains are not always the most efficient way to get around, they are my favorite.
For example, it's about five hours to travel via Amtrak from my home in Annapolis, Maryland, to Connecticut, where IMPACT Live takes place every year. And it's about eight hours to Boston, the home of INBOUND.
Traveling the same distance by plane would obviously be much faster, but the benefits of train travel far outweigh any efficiencies I would gain by flying.
Instead of rushing through airports, dealing with security, and generally hating life, my travel is stress-free. There's no security. I can carry full-size toiletries. I can bring a bag larger than a carry-on with no added cost. I can bring my own meals, snacks, and full-sized beverages.
But that's nothing compared to the peace and serenity of the Amtrak quiet car. I can work. I can nap in relative comfort. I can stare out the window as we go over rivers and lakes, and through large cities.
Most of all, I have plenty of time to mentally prepare myself for the whirlwind of activity and having to be "on" for people 24/7. And, on the way back, I have those hours to myself to decompress in a totally calm environment, before I have to deal with puppies and all of the, "So, how was it?!" conversations.
In short, thanks to the train, I am able to bookend most conference experiences (at least those on the East Coast, heh) with some much-needed me time, with no one bothering me.
I know, the train isn't for everyone. But if what I described sounds like heaven to you, I urge you to give it a shot. It may take me longer to get from point A to point B -- so, my travel mornings tend to start pretty early -- but it's 100% worth it to me.

Heck, I even got to speak this year!

So, plan accordingly.
#2: Pack More Than You Think You'll Need
Like most normal people, I try to pack "lean" when I'm traveling for work. Even though I rarely take a plane -- I'm an Amtrak kind of gal, and I'll explain why later -- I just don't want to deal with the hassle of having a ton of luggage.
But here's a fun fact:
Whether you're networking, sitting in an audience, or speaking in front of one, being around people comes with the territory of marketing conferences.
Chapstick
That's it.
