Daily Fic Highlight: To Keep a Body Whole

And the kudos winner is a new one:

"To Keep a Body Whole" is a The Dark Crystal fic that was inspired by the one-word prompt "hospital." Now, there are no hospitals among the urRu, who I wanted to write about in response to the prompts I received, but UrIm is the Healer, and so I decided I would show him at work caring for UrSen, a self-isolating urRu known as the Monk. 16,083 words, T, Gen but you have to be cool with the possibility of any mystic/mystic ship.

Extrapolating from canon, I think it makes sense that the urRu/mystics would have a complex and, for some, difficult relationship with their own bodily needs. In my previous The Dark Crystal fic, I established that the urRu grapple with their own version of purity culture, which is tied to their determination to not be like their skeksis counterparts.

UrIm as Healer, however, has a perspective powerfully shaped by his role in caring for the physical bodies of mystics, all of whom he loves in a variety of different ways. After giving UrSen a checkup, he can't be resigned to the standard urRu way of thinking, but it's unclear what he can do. A conversation with UrLii only leads to more unsettling questions.

UrSen and UrLii don't ever appear in The Dark Crystal or The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, but that just gave me more room to work!

UrIm knocked on the stone to the side of UrSen’s doorway. “UrSen! It’s UrIm. I’m here for your checkup.” As he waited for UrSen to answer, he noted that their door curtain was getting ragged around the edges. UrUtt would want to fix that, if only UrSen would let him. UrIm consciously smoothed away any expression that might have pulled on his face in reaction to that thought, and just in time. UrSen drew aside the curtain, blinking in the sunlight before casting their eyes to the ground. “Hello, UrIm. Is it really already time?” “Yes.” UrIm’s calm answer sounded almost thunderous, compared to the extreme softness of UrSen’s voice. “You may have an infection. It needs careful watching.” “I’ve had this trouble for a long time. Has it ever changed much?” It never went away, that was true enough. UrIm was fairly sure it was something that originated with UrSen’s other, and Thra alone knew what they were doing to treat it, or, more likely, to exacerbate it. “Sometimes it’s better, sometimes it’s worse. I am interested in making sure the times it is better are greater.” “You know it makes little difference to me.” UrIm did know that. It was one of his primary sources of distress, even more than whatever he suffered due to SkekUng, though he had learned long ago that it was better if he didn’t say that to UrSen. “It’s still time for your checkup.”

Did urMa or urSen do anything as far as lore goes 🤔 I don’t believe I remember thing being in any of the books.

UrSen does have a slightly notable role in the manga continuity. He acts mostly as the narrator of the story, but also indirectly helps the main character solve a problem in typical urRu fashion. That's really it though. Outside of the manga, he's a hermit who spends most of his time in solitude contemplating about his eventual demise. (Side note, interestingly enough urSen in the manga is heavily implied to have also seen his future as he was very sure he would not make it to the Great Conjunction).

UrMa, on the other hand, doesn't have much going on. We have only three sentences worth of description for him and it boils down to he was one of the few urRu who disagreed with urSu, was moreso involved in Thra's affairs and acted as an arbiter between species, and believing the Skeksis could be reasoned with despite their deceitful natures. However, it's noted that even urMa could not have reasoned with them nearing the end of the Age of Division.

Summary:

UrIm goes to UrSen to give them a checkup and faces the difficulty of caring for the body of someone who thinks having a body with needs is a bad thing. But small miracles can happen even in such circumstances. After UrSen's checkup, UrIm and UrLii talk about what UrSen might mean in relation to the other urRu in the Valley, and what needs they all might be ignoring because they seem unthinkable.

Thank you for sending me words! I got really into this, obviously, and I was happy for the excuse to delve deeper into What Is Going On With Mystics.

UrIm has an interesting position as Healer, taking care of beings that are often very uncomfortable with their own bodies.

Also, for the people that are interested, there's a little bit of eroticizing of medical care. Be aware also that I write the mystics as a type of polycule so like, they all have some kind of past or present with each other.

What are your thoughts on the canon? ‘Cause it’s kinda wild as it stands. So far, the only consistent thread of lore I could find are the CM graphic novels, the AoR comics, the AoR show, and the og film/novelization + World Of book. Which, I’d say, is a bit of a shame. JM Lee’s books were quite well written and have expanded upon the mythos in many ways — so it’s sad seeing figures like skekSa, urSan, skekLi, and urLii not get featured in the Bestiary despite urSen and urMa getting sections.

I've concluded some time back because the official website states that all of those things are canonical that they exist on separate timelines. The franchise may or may not allude to this with Aughra, who is able to see multiple timelines, saying things like "I've seen many endings laid before us" and similar lines.

I think by design JMC is very loose with its storytelling, allowing new writers to come in and craft a story. There are pros to this, but of course this means continuity suffers. Even the pieces of media you listed contradict each other.

these are Gods that are real and might possibly intercede to help you... except Nuffle, cause he's to busy with Blood Bowl, but then again he does provide you Blood Bowl, so net positive influence on your living conditions all things considered.

In Berserk the gods are also real and want you to suffer, so basically like 40k where only the chaos gods are the only real ones and you're turbo fukked.
