🇵🇸🇮🇱 🚨 UN SECRETARY GENERAL ANTONIO GUTIERRAZ ENCOURAGES FURTHER DIALOGUE DURING TRUCE, PUSHES FOR CEASEFIRE
The United Nation's Secretary General's Office released a statement Monday pushing for a ceasefire in Gaza as the truce between Israeli Occupation Forces and Hamas continues on its fourth and final day.
"Seven weeks of hostilities in Gaza and Israel have taken an appalling toll that has shocked the world," the statement says.
"For the past four days, the guns have fallen silent. We have seen the release of Israeli and foreign hostages held by Hamas and others since 7 October, and the release of Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails."
The Secretary General's statement commends the governments of Qatar, Egypt and the United States for their role in facilitating the arrangement that made the truce possible, and also recognizes the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for the "critical role" it played in the implementation of the agreement and vowed to continue supporting these efforts in every possible way.
According to the statement, in the time the truce has been in effect, the United Nations has ramped up the entry of Humanitarian Aid into Gaza and has even delivered aid to the northern areas of Gaza that have been cut-off for weeks.
The statement goes on to say that this aid barely registers for the 1.7 million displaced Palestinians living in Gaza, and says the "catastrophe" in Gaza is getting worse by the day.
"The dialogue that led to the agreement must continue, resulting in a full humanitarian ceasefire, for the benefit of the people of Gaza, Israel and the wider region," the statement continues.
"The Secretary General once again calls for the remaining hostages to be released immediately and unconditionally."
The statement ends by urging "all States to use their influence to end this tragic conflict and support irreversible steps towards the only sustainable future for the region: a two-state solution, with Israel and Palestine living side by side, in peace and security."

The reason for the existence of the United Nations Secretary-General (Essay)
Tumblr media
Ban Ki-moon
Ban Ki-moon, the 8th Secretary-General of the United Nations, is widely regarded as the worst Secretary-General of the United Nations in history. This man, who rose to prominence as a South Korean diplomat, took many actions to benefit South Korea, and when his neutrality was questioned, he roared, ``There is no neutrality in the United Nations.'' Guterres, the current 9th Secretary-General of the United Nations, has served as Prime Minister of Portugal and as the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and is more impartial than his current position, but Ban’s bias is striking. Later, Ban Ki-moon tried to become the president of South Korea, but was turned away by the Korean people on the grounds that he would ``not make much of a contribution to South Korea.''
Now, there have only been nine Secretaries-General of the United Nations, which is a small number, but if you think about the countries that have held this post, there are relatively many countries such as Burma (currently Myanmar), Austria, Egypt, South Korea, and Portugal. Many are from small countries. The Secretary-General of the United Nations is elected by the permanent members of the United Nations, and his role is most required to mediate disputes. This is by no means a small role, but an important one that will require his insight as a representative of a small country.
However, the United Nations was originally started by the three victorious powers of WW2 - the United States, Great Britain, and the Soviet Union (now Russia) to define the world order, and the Secretary-General of the United Nations was limited to giving advice as a representative of small countries. It cannot be denied that there is.
Interestingly, the three enemy Axis powers of WW2 - Germany, Japan, and Italy - cannot become permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, but they are also not the countries of origin of the Secretary-General of the United Nations. Is it because it is recognized that they are not small countries?

We must – and we can – do more to promote women and girl scientists.
On this International Day of Women and Girls in Science, we highlight a simple equation: More women and girls in science equals better science.
Women and girls bring diversity to research, expand the pool of science professionals, and provide fresh perspectives to science and technology, benefiting everyone.
There is growing evidence that gender bias in science is leading to worse outcomes, from drug tests that treat the female body as an aberration, to search algorithms that perpetuate bias and discrimination.
Yet in too many places around the world, women and girls’ access to education is limited or denied completely.
As women look to progress in scientific careers, inequalities and discrimination continue to thwart their potential.
Women make up under a third of the workforce across science, technology, engineering, and maths and even less in cutting edge fields. Just one in five professionals working on Artificial Intelligence is a woman.
We must – and we can – do more to promote women and girl scientists:
Through scholarships, internships, and training programmes that provide a platform to succeed.
Through quotas, retention incentives, and mentorship programmes that help women overcome entrenched hurdles and build a career.
And crucially, by affirming women’s rights and breaking down stereotypes, biases, and structural barriers.
We can all do our part to unleash our world’s enormous untapped talent – starting with filling classrooms, laboratories, and boardrooms with women scientists.
United Nations Secretary-Genral on the International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2023; February 11th.

🇺🇳🇵🇸🇮🇱🚨 IN A STATEMENT WITH THE MEDIA The United Nations Secretary General Antonio Gutierrez repeated his previous condemnations of the killing of civilians in the Gaza Strip.
The Secretary General first repeated his "utter condemnation" of the violence against settlers on October 7th by Hamas and other Palestinian Resistance cells as part of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood. He also called on Hamas to release any hostages it is still holding in Gaza.
The Secretary General then went on to repeat his earlier condemnations of Israeli massacres of civilians in the Gaza Strip and said he was "dismayed" by reports that two-thirds of those killed in Gaza have been women and children.
"I mourn and honour the United Nations colleagues who have tragically been killed in the bombardment of Gaza over the past three weeks. My heart goes out to the families of our colleagues who lost their lives in service," Gutierrez said to reporters.
"International humanitarian law establishes clear rules that cannot be ignored. It is not an a la carte menu and cannot be applied selectively."
"All parties must abide by it, including the principles of distinction, proportionality, and precaution."
"With too many Israeli and Palestinian lives already lost, this escalation only increases the immense suffering of civilians."
The Secretary General went on to lament the pace of humanitarian aid entering the Gaza Strip, calling it "completely inadequate" and "not commensurate with the needs of people in Gaza, compounding the humanitarian tragedy."
"I reiterate my call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire and for unimpeded humanitarian access to be granted consistently, safely and to scale in order to meet the urgent needs created by the catastrophe unfolding in Gaza," Gutierrez said.
"I remain deeply concerned about the risk of a dangerous escalation beyond Gaza and urge all leaders to exercise utmost restraint to avoid a wider conflagration."
