October 14, 2020 | Crespo gin
I like gin more than any other alcoholic drink out there, and one of my favourites is Crespo from Ecuador. (My favourite Canadian thus far is Ungava. And pairing it with Fever Tree’s tonic water, especially the elderflower one, is wooo!)
I am planning a little celebration from myself soon, so I was perusing Crespo’s website (to check availability etc.) and ended up on the Botanicals page (out of curiosity), which listed the “11 spices from 4 continents” with which the “handcrafted premium gin” is “elaborated.” And one of the ingredients, coriander, is from Egypt. According to theepicentre.com, coriander is “is found wild in Egypt” and “features in falafel and in the Egyptian appetizer dukka.”
The other 10 spices are as follows:
Juniper from Bulgaria
Orange from the United States
Lemon from the United States
Cardamon from Guatemala
Cinnamon from India
Licorice from Uzbekistan
Angelica from the United States
Dill from India
Cassia from Indonesia
Orris from Morocco

Gin o’Clock – Part Twenty Two
Gin o’Clock – Part Twenty Two

It was the great Athenian tragedian, Aeschylus, who wrote in Agamemnon that wisdom comes through suffering. Rather like Icarus I chose to reach for the sun and instead came crashing down to earth. No, I’ve not been overdoing it with the gin. What I’m talking about is my early experiments with making my own gin. The hooch was a brackish brown colour, not the bright piss colour of Ungava but a

Review: Toronto's Festival of Beer
GUEST BLOG BY SARAH ROGER
I got a chance to return to Toronto's Festival of Beer this year. This was my fourth time attending the festival and each year it gets better and better!
The rain held off on the first night kicking off a great weekend of beers and food. I tried some new beers and the music performances were great.
I first stopped by the Kinder Bueno booth and got a sample.

I then visited the #ChicChocTruck from Quebec.
Tumblr media
My friend sampled their Cabot Trail Maple Cream which would be delicious to give your coffee a kick or drizzled on top of ice cream.

From Quebec, they sell a few offerings at the LCBO. I tried a delicious cocktail of their premium Ungava gin, tonic and grapefruit.

After sampling such delicious beverages I built up an appetite and ordered an amazing ‘Mother Clucker’ grilled cheese with fried chicken from Fidel Gastro’s food truck.

This year the festival had a spotlight on women in beer. The Society of Beer Drinking Ladies had a booth featuring 14 special collaboration beers. Each of the 14 beers offered at their booth were from breweries owned, made, brewed or inspired by women. The society is a fascinating group of women who started North America’s first women’s craft beer festival five years ago and have now grown to host many beer events throughout the year and are soon expanding to other cities in Ontario. Follow them on Twitter to get info on their upcoming events.

I also tried the delicious Waterloo Brewing grapefruit radler which is a perfect summertime drink.
After all the drinks and food I was lucky to see some amazing performances from local bands The Darcys, Rural Alberta Advantage and Broken Social Scene.

Toronto’s Festival of Beer runs July 26 to 29 at OLG Bandshell Park, Exhibition Place. I’ll be sure to go back next year!
