***** to put it simply,   after a certain age,   an adept’s body stops experiencing cell death.    it’s not that they’re left in stasis,   but that when natural cell death should occur,   the cells repair themselves instead.

his biological parents are deceased.    he begins to live with a foster family,   the kotabes,   in his mid-teenaged years and maintains the closest familial relationship with the kotabe daughter and three years his elder,   sei.    though their relationship is all-around positive,   the kotabes aren’t his parents,   but sei is his sister,   as far as he’s concerned.

the vision in his right eye is significantly worse than in his left due to ocular trauma.    it's not noticeable when he has both eyes open because his left eye overcompensates,   but if he closes his left eye,   his surroundings become a lot more difficult to navigate.

he doesn’t cry.    can’t,   to be precise.    he used to be able to,   but he’s been unable to for far longer now.

sometime in his thirties,   after he comes back to take up a more permanent residence in japan again,   kaien starts keeping an albino burmese.    he names her daikon.

he invented the color purple and green and red and yellow and   *continues naming colors until i run out of ones the human eye can visualize and then i just start making more up*

he was an honors student in highschool and university;   genuinely loved to be at school!    his parents instilled strong education-is-important core values just by virtue of existing.

is it cringe if i say his charm-based stats are maxed...    he’s a social butterfly   —   people gravitate towards him because he’s genuine,   both with himself and with others,   and never puts on a front.    you’ll always know where you stand with him,   for better or worse.

somewhat related to the above point,   but he genuinely doesn’t care if and when random people dislike him.    he’s not the sort of person you can offhandedly upset and he’s almost impossible to purposely antagonize.    if someone wants to get a rise out of him,   ninety-nine percent of the time it’s a complete waste of their energy.    it sounds overstated,   but i’m so serious about this.

also somewhat related to the above points,   but kaien doesn’t really raise his voice.    genuinely what is there to shout about?

love languages are physical touch and acts of service.    if he loves you,   he’ll really go out of his way for you;   something he doesn’t do for everyone.    

he’s a great cook,   but he especially loves to bake because his mother loved to bake.    ask him to make all sorts of delicious treats for you!    (he’ll do it regardless if he loves you because he wants to give you everything,   but it’s nice if you go out of your way to ask.    he’ll appreciate it.)

he’s a slow riser and a chronic dozer.    sometimes oversleeper.    if he has to be somewhere that requires full alertness,   he needs to start waking up at least two hours prior.

in canon, when she smiles, she never shows her teeth.     the reason for this is that if she were to grin, the appearance of her would make it obvious she’s not just human.     don’t ask her to show her teeth;   she’s practiced hiding them.     she’s practiced hiding everything that would make her visibly stand out

her eyes are prominent.     her gaze is piercing.     when the sun’s up, her eyes are easily noticeable because of the color   (and because she has very big eyes! very open eyes!),   but when the sun sets, they attain a distinct sheen to them that makes it appear as if they glow in the dark   (and they do.     i’m not creative).     prior to sothis’ soul merging with hers, this was subtle, but after her appearance changes, this vague sheen to her irises becomes immediately eye-catching, especially under the moon

NAME:    aether.    he doesn’t have a name the way celestial deities do,   but aether is what he represents,   so it’s what he’s come to know himself as.    * note on referring to aether in character! TITLE:    he’s accrued several official titles,   but most of teyvat’s people call him traveler / outlander.   it’s a stark reminder that he wasn’t supposed to be here long. AGE:    ancient.    he honestly no longer remembers.    appearance-wise,   he looks to be in his early 20s.    BIRTHDATE: he doesn’t technically have one — he and his sister both predate time.     he chooses one at random on each new world he visits.    GENDER IDENTITY:    N / A   (he / him pronouns are fine.) VERSE 2:    aether is the antagonist; he is the leader of the abyss organization,   waiting for lumine to meet him at the end.    my iteration of abyss prince aether sees him reliving the genshin timeline two separate times:    ask me about it! VERSE 3:    also doubles as pre-game verse; aether and lumine are outlanders traversing different worlds.    easily moldable for crossover purposes! VERSE 4:    no difference from general verse aside from the fact that the world the twins visit is modern-day earth.    aether and lumine are university students.    aether is a vocalist in the the band 4NEMO.

NOTES. 

since i do all my genshin quests out of order (ie.    finish the time-locked event quests in a more or less timely manner and leave the archon,   world,   and story quests to just sit there) i like the idea of aether also accepting requests in much the same way,   and i model his timeline to my gameplay.    for example (and there’s plenty of examples to choose from because i don’t play this game consistently),   aether still hasn’t gone to fontaine; he went from sumeru straight to natlan.

aether can’t die.    not permanently,   at least.    if he gets fatally wounded on teyvat,   his body disperses and flickers back into existence at the foot of the nearest statue of the seven.

this applies mostly to the abyss verse,   but because he’s the representation of the aether / quintessence,   he can naturally “manipulate” peoples’ perceptions of him just via existing.    so in dialogue options when lumine asks people if they’ve ‘seen someone who looks like her’,   chances are that they have,   but their recollection of him has shifted because of who he is and what he can make happen.    if he’s not in front of you he just sort of drifts out of your memory.

* in main verse,   he doesn’t manipulate his surroundings’ memories in the same manner,   but if not for paimon’s company,   aether has no difficulty melting into the background and avoiding notice.

aether doesn’t really think about the concepts of ‘giving’ and ‘taking’ in the standard manner; he doesn’t do things to receive something in return,   nor does he really need gratitude,   either,   to be frank.

he doesn't lie. he can obfuscate and he can refuse to respond, but he doesn't lie. doesn't take kindly to liars in turn; he'd rather someone directly antagonize him than lie to him.

his memory is very good: he remembers names,   faces,   and events clearly.    once something’s occurred,   there’s no chance of him forgetting even a single detail of it,   regardless of how much time has passed.    however,   he has a lot of trouble remembering the timeline; time slips away from him often.    the best way to make note of this is in the way he tells stories: he’s likely to mention a lot of details but never go into specifics of exactly when something occurred.    tl;dr: he doesn’t perceive time linearly.

he doesn't mention his sister often, but it's rare that he's not thinking about her.

he doesn’t have to sleep.    like,   ever.    on nights,   if he’s traveling in a party,   he usually volunteers to keep vigil. (he experiences mortal exhaustion because his body's been rendered almost-mortal, but he doesn't actually have to surrender to it.)
