he hears tooru’s feet racing up the steps and down the hall seconds before he surges into the room, but because he’s a good boyfriend who never lets any of tooru’s bits fall flat, he astarts, zero to a hundred like it’s his calling: cue the theatrics!    “  woah!  ”    he swirls around on his chair and is on his feet in record time.    “  what, what, what is it! did the neighbor let her dogs out again? is the backyard overrun?  ” he's been manifesting it.

“shouyou,” tooru bursts into the room, eyes comically wide and arms flailing frantically, “there’s a huge emergency. can you come downstairs quick?”

❛ rough day today? ❜ hey...

it’s not often that shouyou lets himself get caught lacking these days. his teenage years felt overripe with fumbling, to the point where it still sometimes makes his stomach tighten with discomfort when he recalls specific situations, in school and outside it. he used to think so much, mostly to his own detriment, and it took so long for him to learn that it wasn’t how things were meant to be. 

by the time he did learn, he was an adult, and in rio, and breaking his back in an entirely different way. still chasing the same thing, but from disparate angles. it left little time for a lack of anything.

today he feels lacking in a fundamental, structural way; exhausted, but in a way sleep is unlikely to fix. 

“ you’re back. ” he greets tooru the same way he always does, smile soft, settled by his presence, but he’s slow to get up, and when he meets him at the doorstep with a customary hug, he’s even slower to pull back. he tucks his face into the welcoming curve of his boyfriend’s neck and breathes out a quiet sigh.

“ just tired. ” there’s nothing more to say — tooru will understand. of that, shouyou’s sure. he slips his eyes closed and just lets himself bask. “ i missed you. ”

he doesn’t plan on mentioning it. that’s the decision he comes to the instant he spots them across the room, trained eye processing the disparity in the span of .3 seconds. as thana approaches, the discrepancy becomes obvious, but shouyou’s decisively sticking to his guns: mum’s the word. 

“ you came! ” he says instead, skillfully ducking under their hand to reach out and pull them into a quick, squeezing hug. “ great timing! i was about five seconds away from going out to look for you. there’s so many random signs out there, it’s super easy to get turned around! c’mon, ” he steps back and gestures towards the back entrance, labeled contestants only. “ there’s a bunch of camera people roaming the place already. i’ll sneak you in! ”

“ @shouyuos! there you are! aa-aa, it took so long to find this place. good thing i've been keeping up with my japanese. ” thana raises a hand to their head, then moves it upwards to the top of his head. they sigh in faux disappointment.

“ shouyou-chan... you've grown. again! how is that possible? ”

in vivid contrast to tooru’s inner torment, shouyou, on the other hand, is having a great time. it’s the company, of course (it's generally super hard for him to keep a straight face after extended exposure to tooru), but it’s also in part the fact that tooru’s doing the whole over-the-top first date chivalry thing, reminiscent of… well, their first date, obviously, but also more or less every single date that's transpired since.

the easy grin he’s been sporting for the past hour teeters into breathy laughter as his fingers cover the console tooru just abdicated. “ wow! indirect hand-holding! you flirt! ” he curls his torso, face bending to level with the crane claw, squinting his eyes at the plushie options stuffed along the sides of the glass. “ still wanna go for that one? doesn’t it kinda look like someone we know? ”

“ngh… mnn…” there’s a look of intense focus on his face, concentration unwavering as he carefully shifts the gear in his hand forward while keeping his eyes on the prize. with all his experience on the court, tooru’s never been the type to experience performance anxiety, but in this unique instance he thinks he might understand how it feels, even if he’s performing only for an audience of one. palpitations, check. sweat buildup, check—

his grip on the console slips and destroys his hard earned progress in one fell swoop. the claw makes a sad little click as it retracts, emptyhanded. “agh, i give up!! hey, shouyou, help me out here!”
