The Next Generation: S01E03: The Naked Now

In this episode, the Enterprise crew is going to rendezvous with another ship studying a star that is about to turn into a white dwarf. Upon reaching the ship, they discover something odd about it. They find out that someone opened the hatch, effectively killing many, if not all of the crew by blowing them out into space. 

An Away team is sent to investigate the ship. In this team in Lt. Geordi LaForge. Upon getting back from the investigation, he begins showing many odd symptoms not yet understood by the crew. He is more vibrant, less professional, and more emotional. The crew try to keep him contained until they can discover what is going on with him.

Geordi escapes sickbay and runs into Dr. Crusher’s son, Wesley. Wesley is feeling down because Cpt. Picard won’t allow him on the bridge (also not a kid type of guy), and during this conversation, he shows him an invention that is a mini tractor beam. It also mimics the captains voice perfectly. Geordi leaves shortly after, but not without touching Wesley on the neck, which becomes important.

Once Dr. Crusher discovers Geordi escaped, the security team (led by Lt. Comm. Yar) goes on a search mission to find him. Yar finds him in the conference room, where he pleads with her to let help him see the way she does. He takes his visor off, and feels her face the way blind people “see” features. She then takes him to sickbay.

Later on, the crew discovers that something that affected the crew of the other ship has a similar effect on a person’s brain to alcohol, except it seems to pass from person to person via touch. They do not realize this just yet however, as LaForge is the only crew member at this time that has exhibited any symptoms.

Counselor Troi later finds Yar in her Quarters trying on her clothes and being very seductive. Its only after Yar touches her hand that Troi realizes perhaps this “infection” may have gotten to Yar. She alerts the captain of this. Soon after, Dr. Crusher becomes away that her son Wesley might have said condition too, as he complains of it being hot, which LaForge did when his symptoms first started.

We next see Yar seductively walking down a corridor; in the background you notice random crew members exhibiting intoxication symptoms. Yar then begins making out with a fellow officer. Interesting...

What happens next is pretty funny. Wesley uses his voice machine to send engineering away from the engine control room, and casts over the intercom Captain PIcard giving him control over the ship. Apparently Wesley is now White Girl Wasted and in control of a Galaxy Class Ship while under the influence.

Sensing the ship being under extreme duress, Picard sends Data to find Yar to escort her to sickbay. Upon finding her in her quarters, we see her dressed seductively, telling Data about her childhood and need for touch before escorting him into her bedroom. Bow Chika Wow Woooow. Seriously, she used Data as a Dildo.

The crew begin working on a way to power down the shields Wesley put over Engineering that prevents anyone from entering, while Data arrives back at the bridge, exhibiting intoxication symptoms himself. The drunkness is spreading rapidly over the crew while time is running out to gain control of the ship before the star collapses on itself. There is a hilarious moment where Dr. Crusher begins to come down with symptoms and passes them on to the Captain, in a hilarious moment of exaggerated passion.

A part of the collapsing star is heading towards the ship, set to collide in 14 minutes. They get the shield protecting Engineering down, only to find the ships control chips have all been taken out by a drunk crew member. Data is send down to place them back in, but his drunk speed is 1 minute slower than the collapse. Crusher finds a cure and gives drunk Picard some to take to engineering. Wesley uses inspiration from his mini tractor beam to push the other ship into the star’s course, slowing them down just enough for Data to replace the final chip and have them warp out of harms way.

This was a pretty fun episode. I enjoy the way they can take a simple premise (Like everybody being drunk) and flesh it out into a sensical story that is engaging, revealing, and fun. I’m happy about watching these episodes again, as this is one I never saw when I was younger. Looking forward to the next one.
