VERY fun how the reoccurring motif of gun duels in umineko as an allegory for settling inner conflict gets introduced little by little until it finally becomes obvious. because only then you look back at the end of ep1 with the natsuhi vs beatrice duel and get hit with the realization of what it truly meant all along.

also fun how most duels are fair game or gambles but this one was rigged from the start... natsuhi Literally dueling beatrice over the title of ushiromiya family head with a gun without a bullet. the thing that ruined sayo's life and she never wanted, and the thing natsuhi thinks will give her worth in a family that treats her like dirt. her gun is as empty as her pride in a family that has no place for her. this conviction is ultimately an illusion. natsuhi's bullet of truth is invalid and cannot pierce the witch.

ep1 centers the misogynistic violence enacted on natsuhi and how hard she wants to believe that she can earn the family's respect and prove her own worth with enough effort and merit.

the result of the duel makes it look like natsuhi shot herself. her devotion to the family is self annihilation.

natsuhi cannot win.

the ending of umineko episode 3 has done nothing to dissuade me of believing in beatrice's pure heart. if anything, the predictability of her plan (I saw the rug pull coming! it was too convenient!) has further consolidated my initial perspective; because who else but a deeply lonely person would study the appeal of tropes in fiction for the purpose of absorbing it into their identity and acting out some theatrical dreamy scenario all so someone will see and acknowledge them? that's not an evil criminal mastermind, that is a yumejoshi. *coughs up blood*
