So I'm making a video essay about Ugliness and Pokemon using data from RatePkmn.
What's RatePkmn? Well, the project was started by UmbreonLibris as a way to analyze and compare Pokémon designs through consensus than the views of a single person. They aggregate the ratings you provide to calculate the average opinions of Pokémon fans on each Pokémon. The data is public and open.
Tumblr media
How does it work? You're basically served a pokemon at random based on how many ratings it has relative to others and what you've already rated. You simply use the 5-point slider to convey how you feel the pokemon vibes in each aesthetic category.
Also how much you like or dislike it.
And I like playing with this data to learn stuff and my video will be about my insights. Why am I bringing this up?
Because we are at, like, nearly 150 ratings per design, and it would be really neat to actually achieve that number. A nice good round number to work from. And because the more opinions, the more clear the consensus becomes.
The site even has graphs and lists you can mess with yourself and see how your favorites stack, what categories do pokemon excel in, are there relationships between coolness and type? That type of thing.
Anyhow, I'm going to get back to making some graphs.
'Dios!

Umbreon is the most popular Pokémon.
I’m not even stating my bias because it’s one of my favorites, there is now quantifiable evidence that Umbreon is on average the most popular Pokémon.
The usual suspects like Charizard, Pikachu, or Greninja didn’t make top 10. They didn’t even make top 20. And this is from two different datasets with different polling methods.

I’ve been reblogging these Pokémon polls from one of my friends but I should really be giving you all a more interesting means of rating Pokémon.
Introducing
ratepkmn.com or Rate Pokémon Designs by Umbreon Libris.
The goal is to get an idea of what people think of different aspects of Pokémon designs.
It’s simple, it randomly pulls a Pokémon you haven’t voted on yet and you use sliders to rate how you feel about certain design aspects on a 5-point scale. These sliders are
Simple - Complex
Cartoony - Realistic
Biological - Artificial
Normal - Fantastical
Not humanoid - Very humanoid
Not cute - Very cute
Not cool - Very cool
Ugly - Pretty
I dislike it - I like it
There are graphs available that you can use to see where Pokémon rank in different design aspects and you can even compare these aspects to stuff like type, ability, base stat, nature, and more!
The best part is that anyone can use the data. I downloaded it and have been using it to analyze design trends over time.
It’s a really cool website and the more data the better! You don’t have to rank every single Pokémon, but it’s a fun thing to do in your spare time that’ll really help out the project a lot!
