Hi, I was wondering for a while and decided to ask the expert: How do you think Auri-El worship and understanding of him differed between Altmer, Falmer and Ayleids? What little surviving imagery of Falmer's version of him doesn't seem to have any bird imagery unlike the other two races, instead depicting him as a full elf, so I'm wondering what your take on it is.
Excellent question anon! So excellent I spent a few days mulling it over, looking through notes, and even made a few headcanons along the way. The main points are in bold:
The only Falmeric depictions of Auri-El in the canon are in Skyrim and, to an extent, ESO. The Skyrim depiction is the Elven statue with the vaguely dragonbone-looking robes, whereas the Font of Auri-El has this lovely codex:
Tumblr media
[I/D: A yellowed piece of paper headlined with "Ugron gro-Thumog", an Antiquarian in Solitude, reads: "Auri-El, by the looks of it. Seems a little abstract, honestly. Elves make a point of including Elven likenesses in their shrines to reinforce their familiar connections to the Divines. This probably rested near a statue of the Chief Divine himself."]
The font in ESO is a giant wayshrine-like structure with the symbol of Auri-El, a sun with eight curved flares, glowing gently in the center. This symbol is also seen in Skyrim, atop the wayshrines along the Chantry.
Notably, there are no statues of Auri-El, Elvish or otherwise, near these wayshrines in the Chantry. Which is the place made specifically for Auri-El worship. It's entirely possible that the sun was the default, with animal aspects taking on a more specific or diplomatic connotation; I can see the Falmer using the Eagle or even the Dragon to explain their faith to Atmorans.
My headcanon is that Elvish depictions of the Divines were based on the current Prince of that Divine. The Elf you see in the Chantry is, in my interpretation, a depiction of the Snow Prince who reigned when the Chantry was being built. Given that he's bald, it's possible that he was newly anointed as Prince.
Building on the previous bullet point, one of my longest held headcanons about the Falmer is that they were the most spiritual of the Elvish races, which is reflected in their iconography. Instead of conflating their visage with actual gods, they opted for abstractions and symbols as the gods simply do not take a mortal form. A mortal form is made from material, and that means material wants and material burdens; they shed all that! That's how they ascended in the first place!
Some exceptions exist. The Demigod Mara sacrificed her divinity to remain on Nirn, and so she was often depicted as either a mortal or a wolf.
This... differs quite a bit from the Altermic and Ayeild depictions of Auri-El, with the Altmer leaning heavily towards "Elven DILF" and the Ayleids using both Elven and animal aspects, sometimes at the same time.
The Ayeildoon statue of Auri-El is at Garlas Malatar, which is notably where Meridian champion Umaril the Unfeathered made his lair. I may or may not have extensive headcanons on the implications.
The Auri-El statue in the Forgotten Vale and the one in Alinor's Temple of the Divines look eerily alike. I am chalking this up to asset recycling.

The various weaponry for my Elder Scrolls lineage of Heroes
The Elder: Heart Stone spear (gift from the Skaal), Wamasu-femur dagger (made during his childhood), chitin javelins (crafted during journey in Vvardenfell), Imperial claymore (a gift from Caius Cosades, rarely used)
The Striker: Steel bardiche (used throughout travels in Cyrodiil, basically immediately after finding it on a bandit鈥檚 corpse after escaping the Imperial sewers), leaf-headed javelins (bought in the Imperial City), Mace of the Crusader (gained during his quest to kill Umaril the Unfeathered)
The Hero: Sun锟斤拷锟絪 Fire (custom Skyforge Steel greatsword made for him by Eorlund Gray-Mane, with an enchantment reverse-engineered from Dawnbreaker by Farengar Secret-Fire), shortbow & pilum (weapons given to him during training as a Legionary), Akatosh鈥檚 Talon & Dragon鈥檚 Oath (an enchanted pair of weapons, warhammer and gladius respectively, given to him for the Battle of the Champions, a pitched battle where he slew the Stormcloak鈥檚 Champion, though he did not take her armor or weapons, instead returning them to Windhelm with her body as a show of respect)

In my Martin Lives au, Joanelle still goes batshit and starts a series of violent riots across Cyrodiil a few years after the crisis ends. Martin being alive bares no impact on whether or not she'll mantle Sheogorath.
I like to think that realizing she's peaked is what drove her mad. She closed the oblivion gates and beheaded Mankar Camoran, went on to kill Umaril the Unfeathered, she has no hope of ever topping those feats. It makes her feel useless, there's few things worse for her. Joanelle is a woman that requires a concrete goal to function. She could never be satisfied with a place on Martin's personal guard. It's too aimless, too stifling. Her talents would be wasted on the palace.

i am, of course, 100% lying, because ACTUALLY talos is the only reason that the divine crusader is able to defeat umaril the unfeathered in Oblivion's Knight of the Nine DLC. i bet that really gets his dick wet, his starstudded appearance in the shittiest oblivion expansion that isn't about horse armor. oh mighty talos, we turn to thee in order to defeat the final boss of the catholicism DLC. all those things you did were worth it, it all culminated in this

OC Headcannons
Calling these headcannons because I haven鈥檛 decided to canonize them yet. It鈥檚 also mostly Velentius, because most of my Amina and Neioli headcannons are cannon.
None of them actually realize just how strong and badass they are. They all just think of themselves as regular people.
Which is 100% false.
Amina is the Dragonborn, the baby mama of Sanguine, and killed Alduin, a dragon god. Neioli is the reincarnation of the Dunmers most loved ruler, killed 2 gods, defeated Hircine in one on one combat, and married Vivec. Velentius is a god, defeated Umaril the unfeathered in single combat twice in a row, and destroyed every last Oblivion Gate in Cyrodiil before he even met Martin.
When Velentius first became Sheogorath, he immediately regretted it. He left the Isles, with the Staff of Sheogorath still laying on his throne. He spent 2 months in Cyrodiil, fighting anything he could find before he returned and accepted his throne.
He spent who knows how long learning to control his powers and accept his role.
He is accepted by barely any of the other Daedra. By that, I mean, only 3. Malacath, Jyggalag, and Hircine.
The other either treat Velentius as scum of the earth and like he should never have been born, or like he doesn鈥檛 even exist.
Jyggalag accepts him as he was the one who freed him from his curse. Hircine accepts him as he proved himself in combat, went from hare to hunter. Malacath accepts him because he understands him. They were both ostracized, and neither were born Daedra.
Velentius and Malacath also began to form a romantic relationship after 90 or so years.

they definitely do both seem to be sharmat-figures, seeking to supplant the godhead and take control of the dream (i've seen it argued that umaril the unfeathered is as well (p. 91), though i haven't played oblivion yet so i can't speak on the matter myself)
does Miraak and Dagoth Ur feel similar on purpose or what

Alright, I completed the Knights of the Nine questline and... It was underwhelming. The battle with Umaril was anticlimactic just like the one versus Mannimarco in the Mages Guild questline. And I wanted to know more about Pelinal, he's an extremely interesting character in the lore but in the game they gave him 4 lines and that was it lmao
There were also some bugs which annoyed me a lot but, really, what else can I expect from a Bethesda game?
Anyway I'm finally going back to the main quest, mah boi Martin has been waiting for that great Welkynd stone for m o n t h s and I miss his stupid face

... [Pelinal] came ... holding a sword and mace, both encrusted with the smashed viscera of elven faces, [and] feathers ... stuck to the redness that hung from his weapons, and he lifted them, saying: "These were their eastern chieftains, no longer full of their talking."
