Sunset at the Nara Ukimido Pavilion (浮見堂)
As the sun began its slow descent behind the hills of Nara, I found myself drawn to the Ukimido Pavilion, a charming hexagonal structure perched elegantly on Sagiike Pond. It’s the kind of place that feels like it’s been plucked straight out of a serene watercolour painting—and yet, there I was, standing in the middle of it, soaking it all in.
The pavilion, whose name means "Floating Hall," doesn’t actually float. But at sunset, with the water shimmering like liquid gold and the surrounding trees framing the view, it gives off a magical, dreamlike vibe. It’s the sort of scene that makes you pause and think, This is one of those moments worth remembering.
Of course, no moment of tranquillity goes uninterrupted for long. A pair of ducks decided to paddle by, quacking their disapproval as if I’d trespassed on their evening hangout. Meanwhile, a cheeky deer wandered nearby, looking vaguely unimpressed by the breathtaking sunset—as if to say, Oh, this old view? Seen it a thousand times.
Despite the wildlife critics, it was impossible not to be captivated by the pavilion’s beauty. As the sky transitioned from blue to soft gold, the stillness of the scene felt almost meditative.
At sunset, the Ukimido Pavilion is pure magic.
