“Leave,” Lord Teelo ordered. They hesitated, both the servant and the guard, the lord could see it out of the corner of his eye, never taking his gaze away from the creature. “Both of you. Leave,” he repeated, tone low. “I can handle it myself.”

The creature's face did something complicated: its upper lip trembled up and down, its eyes darting frantically across then squinting. It pulled on its chain briefly and then the door closed behind Lord Teelo’s back and it froze, not looking at him but instead staring somewhere down and to the side. 

He wasn't satisfied with that. 

He ignored it for the time being. Walked to his desk where among the papers was a special order delivered by servants probably when he was away. He lifted the cloche up and watched as a few seconds later the creature shifted, its nostrils flaring up as it smelled the meat. 

Lord Teelo picked up one piece through a handkerchief with two fingers. It was still warm, bloodied, disgusting. Ah, the sacrifices he made for his goals. 

The creature still didn't look up at him, staring somewhere to the side of his boots with what felt like stubborn determination. Lord Tello clicked his tongue. “Should I believe you're not hungry?” No response. “Don't you want food? Food?” He drew out the word and stood just a bit further than the chain would allow the creature to go. 

He let the piece of meat fall onto the ground in front of it, and it definitely noticed. Its jaw worked, opening and closing behind the muzzle. It whined. “So you want food?” The lord smiled. 

It swallowed. “‘uud,” it tried finally but still didn't look up. 

“Good pet,” Lord Teelo murmured. “Look at me now. Head up.”

It hesitated. The lord knew it knew what he meant – he had seen it follow this same order from the servant, it couldn't not know. Yet, it hesitated. He cracked the crop over the side of the cage. It nearly jumped, jerking up, but still didn't look at him. 

Lord Teelo reached out. Slowly, making sure it saw, before grabbing its chin, forcing it up, towards him. “Eyes on me,” he whispered. It didn't understand. 

The crop made contact with its back, and it flinched and yelped and couldn't get away as his fingers squeezed its throat. Finally, its eyes settled on him, wide and terrified. “Good pet,” Lord Teelo praised. It looked away and back and whimpered again, pitifully. “Aw, did that hurt? That's right if it did. How else would you understand what I mean. Come on, now, eyes on me. You will only be looking at me from now on. Nobody is going to matter to you but me.”

He reached again, running fingers through its short fur and down the smooth skin – there was fur, now that he looked closely, but so short and thin, only slightly darker than the gray of its skin and barely noticeable. Very soft to the touch. It pinched its ear – it couldn't flinch away, – stroked its head and cheeks, moved on to its body, running hands down his neck and onto its shoulders. The rainbow lines weren't anything special to the touch, he noted with a ping of regret, perhaps a bit warmer than the rest of the body, but that could be his imagination. They looked stunning anyway.

The creature waited, only shifting minutely as he touched and prodded to his heart’s content, and its shoulders grew tenser with every second. “Not enjoying it, are you?” Lord Teelo hummed and smacked its back with no real force. It still whined – he must have hit one of the still unhealed lashes.. “You'd better learn how to. If you want to get to eat, of course. To get your ‘uud’.”

“‘uud,” it echoed immediately.

The lord laughed, “Impatient, are we?” He bent down, took its tail into his fingers, messaging it briefly. It was somewhat on the shorter side, he thought, though admittedly he didn't know how long most animals’ tails were. And apparently quite sensitive, if he could judge how the creature first tried to jerk away and then froze, tense and nearly trembling. He squeezed it, testing its patience, waiting for it to lash out. 

It did. 

Lord Teelo saw it bite before – this time it couldn't, of course, but its hands were still free and it struck with one, fast and brutal, jerking its tail from his fingers, growling and baring teeth. He expected an attack, but not the speed with which it happened, not the strength – he didn't manage to step back in time, didn't manage to take his arm away, and let out an embarrassingly high sound when his sleeve was ripped apart and splattered with red. 

The creature backed to the wall again, terrified of what it just did and what the consequence of it could be. Lord Teelo slowly lifted up the crop. It whimpered.
