made a chart of the straw hats' skin tones with the colors being screencapped directly from the episodes, to show how much they've lightened. this is more than just an "artstyle change" or "design evolution" or "just the timeskip" this is blatant racism/colorism. it's fucking ridiculous and i don't understand how toei is continuously getting away with it please reblog btw, i think this is something people should see

Actually, speaking of the whole Sanji & Usopp Meta again (I won't shut up about it ever) and the common complaint of "why wasn't Usopp in WCI?", the more I think about it, the more I come to the conclusion that it IS because they are foils.

It's kind of a joke I've seen around that "WCI wouldn't have happened if Usopp was there" but I actually genuinely believe that. Do you think Sanji would have the guts to lie out of his teeth (the whole pretending he was a cruel haughty prince this whole time) to drive away his crew during that carriage scene, if the Certified Crew Liar who Lies to Protect Himself and Others was there? To call him out? To immediately recognize that behavior? Do you think Sanji would have it in him to FIGHT LUFFY, if Usopp, who was deeply scarred by his own brawl with Luffy, was there to watch them? When Usopp reminds Sanji of his past self? Would Sanji find the strength or the courage to make Usopp relive Water 7 in that scene? Would Sanji find it that easy to lament about his weakness compared to his powerful siblings during the entirety of the arc if the "guy that survives being the Weak Human in a world of Monsters" was there to remind him it IS possible to survive? Especially when you accept the help of your friends?

Usopp wasn't in WCI cause it would have been over like ten times quicker lmao. Sanji needed to feel isolated and desperate in his solitude for the arc to work, and the best way to do that is to separate him from one of his major foils. And I think it's the same reason his other two parallels, Zoro and Robin, weren't in it either.

In One Piece Fanfiction…

Zoro has the best deadpan lines

- Because of the swordsman's pragmatic nature, the moments in fanfics where a crewmate makes a big confession or something shocking happens, his reactions always leave me snickering. He's stone-faced and blunt, but his words reveal a subtle care. It might be thinly veiled concern or anger-laced protectiveness.

- Thanks to Luffy's unfiltered nature, writers easily give him the best one-liners as though he’s saying the first thing that pops into his head. It’s especially funny when he mispronounces words or mangles common phrases (especially names!).

- Writers often make Usopp observant in a way that’s both thoughtful and unique, especially when he’s describing or interacting with his crewmates.

Nami has the most expressive dialogue

- Writers often capture Nami's emotions through her expressions and tone, making it easy to hear the emotion in her words.

I realised something about the Straw Hats. They are symmetrical.

Now I don't mean this in the sense of power or whatever but that there's a "Heavy Hitter" for each "Support" that matches their emotional maturity, I'll explain.

Luffy pairs with Chopper

They're both so young when they gain their power, they are able to find childlike wonder and joy in this world, to smile and love the world but also have boundless idealism.

Sanji pairs with Usopp

Both have faced some tremendous lows, knowing that they have a disconnect from the idealism of Chopper and Luffy but they can still find the joy in some aspects. It's like laughing and loving with people after losing someone, there's a lot of positives but there's a tinge of suffering. The two of them have had to prove themselves, to carve out themselves with an ideal around one of their parents and the loss of another that they fear they will either never measure up to or become exactly like, whichever is worse.

Zoro pairs with Nami

These two have faced something unbelievable, there's a person sized hole in them that they'll never fill and they'll push every day to try. They disconnect easily because it's the easiest way, and it'll take a lot for them to lock in to protect people outside of the crew, but when they do the world will burn around them. See Nami in Alabasta and Zoro in Wano.

Franky pairs with Robin

Two people who are older than their years and have seen the worst the world government can throw at them. They've each hurt this new family they've come to love but they seem to accept a role of parents now, relying on each other to find the positives in this world and pushing back the darkness, like they did supporting each other while hostages at Enies Lobby.

Jimbe pairs with Brook

The two old men out of time. They were meant to be in so many different places from where they are now, Jimbe a captain and a warlord of the sea, Brook a pirate 50 years ago. They both will feel a distance from this crew, a hollowness that will take time to heal but knowing that they are loved and cared for and their experience is valued really will bring them into the fold.
