Steps near Gare du Est, Paris. December 2024 I finaly got the time to draw these steps, after passing them over the years. I was walking up and down them looking for the best place to stop to sketch. As I sat down, I noticed the annual event of losing my glove had occured and I had to sketch with a cold hand.

On our fifth day in Puerto Galera we tried to go to the Tukura Water Falls where you get taken to the falls in a cart pulled by a Carabao. Unfortunately rain and high water levels meant the Cart Association (the sign said “Cart Ass”, which made us giggle) wasn’t operating. Urban sketching in Chicago’s Grant Park. These 1920 era sculptures were created by Croatian artist Ivan Mestrovic intending to be an entrance to the giant park and gardens on the lake. And the park is there, and quite nice, although I’m not sure if the original plans were for a road to go through it…?

Interestingly, there are two Indian sculptures there; the Spearman and the Bowman. My drawing is the Bowman, and at the time I thought the bow and arrow had disappeared, but turns out the weapons were never included because the artist didn’t want the weapon to take away attention from the figures.

Sketching random people encountered while having meals or chilling in cafes -- my usual go to places are kopitiams (eateries) near where I stay. People come and go and there is always no lack of subjects to sketch from. People move all the time so you are constantly managing time to complete a drawing, simplifying as you go and capturing the essence of their poses, shapes and sizes.

This sketch was done at the local mall (Market Market!), when we stopped for a light lunch (at Beiruti Bites) while we were doing a massive Christmas shop for all the ingredients we needed to cook our Christmas dinner. I added all the sparkly lights with a Posca pen. Mon-23-Dec-2024
