Totally Random Non-Fiction Tuesday
Around here (New England) there isn’t quite as much of a decades and decades of fandom when it comes to the NFL. I mean, the Patriots have existed since 1960, but, only really have come into the front of anyone in the last couple of decades (vs. the three other main sports where the Bruins were part of the Original Six, the Celtics are the Celtics, and the Red Sox won the first World Series more than 120 years ago).
All that is to say that I only had vague ideas about the super long history of the NFL, and, this book was full of interesting and surprising things. From how it got through things like the Great Depression and World War II, to, of course, the scandals, ooh, and all USFL stuff in the 80s too. It was just chock full of so much good stuff.

The Crony Capitalism of the NCAA’s Unpaid Athlete System
The Crony Capitalism of the NCAA’s Unpaid Athlete System
With the recent passing of a California state law allowing NCAA athletes to earn money from their image and likeness, the topic of college athletics’ exploitative model of “amateur” unpaid athletes is experiencing renewed focus. In episode 1 of the SportsTheme Podcast I spoke with Dr. Lori Martin about her perspectives on the NCAA’s unpaid model. There we focused on the connected history of racist exploitation of black athletes and its relevance to the college athletics system today. In this post, I’d like to acknowledge some of the political corruption and back room collusion that supports the college system as it is. In response to the current signs for a potential for changes to the amateur model, I’ll offer my perspective here on the role of the professional leagues and their influence alongside the NCAA to create a politically comfortable atmosphere in which their abuses are unchecked.
First, it’s helpful to remember that despite massive amounts of revenue and monopolistic control over individual sports, the NCAA, NFL, and NBA maintain special privilege from the federal government to operate. In the case of the NCAA, its continued status as a non-profit and largely tax exempt institution despite billion dollar television contracts is a situation so absurd it rightfully compels a (necessary but too involved for here) look at the tax evasive nature of many recognized non-profits. But in the case of the NBA and NFL, the impotent application of antitrust laws against organizations which dominate their respective landscape in each sport, are hostile to emergent new leagues, and are operating a franchise model which fixes prices and unifies business practices marks a special status of its own. (e.g. the USFL’s award of $1 in its “successful” suit against the NFL for breaking antitrust statutes in 1986). This seeming unwillingness to hold sports leagues accountable to antitrust principles is certainly part of a larger pattern, but seems especially blatant when each of the 4 major America professional sports are unquestionably dominated by single entity franchise structures that eliminate real economic competition. With greater focus on political campaign finances, some leagues have received media criticism for their lobbying and donations to especially conservative members of congress. However, I’d speculate the political inaction on antitrust laws is further facilitated by fear of populist electoral backlash to any action which affects the status quo. Whatever the cause of this allowance, the complicity of the NBA and NFL in the NCAA’s exploitation of athletes compounds their culpability.
Rightfully so, much of the criticism for the unpaid athlete model is directed at the NCAA. Recently in response to California’s new law, the seven-figures compensated president of the NCAA Mark Emmert reacted to this nascent threat by suggesting the law was unconstitutional. This near repulsively blatant response seeks to protect a corrupt institution which has earned its scrutiny-- however what is lost in that singular focus is the necessary help of the NFL and NCAA. The perpetual investment required to scout and develop young athletes is often seen as unpalatably risky by the billionaire business ghouls who exclusively populate NFL ownership. Here the NCAA offers a mutually beneficial solution to that problem: maintain a bogus amateur development league that will operate in lieu of a potentially unprofitable minor league. Look no further than the MLB’s ongoing lobbying efforts to maintain minimum wage exemptions for their minor league players under the classification of ‘seasonal workers’. Yes, that’s an exception to the unlivable $7.25 federal minimum wage that MLB sees as necessary to support its developmental system. It is easy to imagine why then that the NFL and NBA work closely with the NCAA in establishing eligibility rules and draft procedures that felicitously maintain a system which benefits all three organizations at the expense of its unpaid, young (and predominantly black) workers.
What a truly just professional sports model might look like is a difficult and valuable question. But it’s important to understand here that, although other systems are deeply imperfect, the player development model in the United States is far from the norm around the world. In professional soccer leagues in most nations, young adult athletes are developed through academy systems which are often owned and operated by the professional clubs themselves. At the highest levels, the business model some clubs is so focused on investment towards player acquisition and development, the best teams remain unprofitable. To be clear, I’m glossing over a serious diversity in models here, but it is important to recognize the unique situation in the United States. While there are many, many corrupt aspects of sporting institutions around the world, the American model is unreplicated. Nowhere else in the world is the defacto second tier of massively popular and profitable sport supported on the backs of unpaid athletes. While it is encouraging to see small steps at state level to change the NCAA model, much action is needed to create a system which is remotely just. Shifting focus away from the NCAA itself, and towards a larger system of complicit professional leagues and passive politics may prove valuable in thinking about change.

Not America Through This Again
We could do better than the worst. Trying a most unpleasant human archetype again might fail to make life better. Getting hit by a bus the second time could be more pleasant, but patterns tend to indicate consistent results. That should be a no on any more Donald Trump anymore. I could’ve written such in 2016, or 2011, or 1984. Maintaining principles about prototypical fraud makes decisions easy.
Sucker disciples forget about the Trump presidency for the wrong reason. There’s a difference between avoiding flexibility and refusing to fall for a conman’s spiel no matter the year. Three-card Monte is a scam no matter the decade. Getting conned never gets classier.
The prototypical attention whore won’t go away just because you want him to, and will in fact kvetch in an even more juvenile tone at increased volume to let you know there’s no escape. I’m sensing a trend. The only hope is to ignore a decades-long tantrum until the eternal infant wears himself out.
The 76-year-old ceaseless pouter is the only human more tired than the incumbent, who you may recognize as the worst president ever. Joe Biden’s accomplishment was beating Trump. All the defeated cares about is winning, and seeing him do the opposite again isn’t worth the laughs.
The only thing better than realizing the error of one’s ways is not screwing up in the first place. Many self-professed reformed cultists vow to not vote for their erstwhile sullen savior again. It’s the last word that’s concerning.
Wondering who fell for him before is an exhausting exercise that at least shows the source of humanity’s meager progress. The best we can do in a most imperfect world where a the emptiest person who’s full of it can be president is seeking to avoid repeating such embarrassment. There’s a difference between putting on The Office again in the background and enduring another binge the same joyless presidency in the forefront.
He’s always been like this. Pretending a hateful messianic dismissive autocratic conspiracy lunatic obsessed with tearing down those who make him feel unsuccessful by comparison has teetered over the edge during retirement is a history rewrite as mortifying as pretending he won again.
Nostalgia for trying times might be a way to cope with getting seduced by an obnoxious slob. But admitting a mistake is the tough and right move that shows more decency than the golden idol.
Drawing attention to himself remains Trump’s only skill. This is breaking news from the time of the original USFL. He should feel lucky the spell is wearing off, as coming to senses is also the surest case against him mortifying himself again as well as the rest of us. Demanding protests on his behalf shows a deep commitment to the sole principle of getting dupes to worship him.
The phoniest, pettiest, nastiest example of a masquerading alpha imaginable is not trying a new persona. Fans of noticing things shouldn’t need to point out that he’s a prototypical caricature. But the fact the most obvious phony ever tricked anyone remains concerning. Pretending the most blatant poser was as authentic as they come shows how advertising works even when the audience knows they’re being sold bad goods.
Never Trump was a commitment before it became a grift for a few soft mercenaries who copied his dedication to playing a character. Actual conservatives who were sick of the tiresome presidency before it began still dream of a candidate who believes our dumb government has grown far beyond acceptable boundaries and is capable of shrinking it. Or, go with someone who thinks everyone who doesn’t care for his style is an unpopular loser to see if it works this time.
Let’s review, since it’s apparently necessary. Teachers of remedial classes have gone over the case against him like it’s explaining to liberals how prices drop while quality increases if businesses compete for customers. The rather obvious lesson is still not setting in somehow even after he already had his chance at the top office. Rant against the person who squandered every undeserved blessing he received once more and treat it as cathartic.
The perpetually dwindling Trump cadre is so dedicated that they act like he was never president. I feel the same way, The only thing lamer than believing he’d drain the swamp in 2020 is doing so now. Such cultish devotion would’ve made Jim Jones twitch.
An embodiment of an ‘80s movie villain proved unhelpful in 2016. A couple years and one presidency haven’t improved the outlook on a black glass-clad black hole. Trying to show everyone that free markets are based in mutually beneficial voluntary exchange is tough while refusing to decline purchasing the caricature of financial tyranny. Obsessing with winning instead of offering a worthwhile product defeats the goal. Voters remain unhappy with the purchase.
Joyless emptiness remains as inspirational. Stop giving Democrats something about which to be correct, especially for the most liberal Republican imaginable. At least there’s no dignity. The most wretched president and most depressing party remind themselves too much of each other. Own the libs by spending like them.
Business, politics, and humanity don’t have to be like this. Ancient selfish tantrums are precisely what we’re trying to escape. Trump’s miserable archetype is the unfortunate style that should be left in the past. He was never the alternative. The one worse notion than believing the ultimate Boomer shtick was once refreshing is still doing so now.

2022 CFL Odds, Season Preview and Gray Cup Predictions
In the United States, football season doesn't move around until the pre-fall/late-summer. Football is, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the most famous game in the country.
Throughout the long term, we've seen a lot of lesser expert associations spring up trying to exploit the NFL's extended offseason. The UFSL, which appears to be bound for disappointment, is right now in the center of its most memorable season. Are easygoing football fans mindful of the USFL's presence? Likely not.
In the not so distant future, Canada's expert football association will start off its own 2022 mission. Dissimilar to the different American new companies that have traveled every which way, the Canadian Football League is one of the longest-running ace football circuits in the world. The 2022 season will be the CFL's 64th. 안전 토토사이트 추천
While by far most of the CFL's fanbase is naturally situated in Canada, there is a developing army of fans somewhere else all over the planet. These days, all of the highest level football wagering locales have CFL chances that anyone could hope to find for your examination.
Whether you're new to the CFL or a long-term fan, here's beginning and end you want to be familiar with the competitors during the current year's Gray Cup.
When Does the 2022 CFL Season Start? The CFL lobby will formally start on Thursday, June ninth. Similar as Major League Baseball, the past offseason was damaged by work conflict.
On May fifteenth, the CFL Player's Association really picketed after they neglected to settle on another aggregate haggling concurrence with the association. It was the principal CFL player strike beginning around 1974, yet the different sides struck terms on a conditional new understanding only three days after the fact.
The beyond couple of seasons have been shortened by the Covid-19 pandemic, however the CFL will get back to its commonplace 18-game timetable in 2022, traversing 21 weeks altogether. Regina will play host to the 109th yearly Gray Cup on November twentieth.
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are amidst a dynastic run. The establishment brought home its twelfth Gray Cup championship with a 33-25 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats a year ago. It was the Blue Bombers' second sequential title, and they'll hope to turn into the primary group since the Edmonton Eskimos (1978-1982) to win three straight this season.
The Blue Bombers' +250 CFL chances and status as opening title top picks ought to amaze no one that follows this association. The Bombers began 11-1 last season prior to resting starters in the last two or three rounds of the mission.
Safeguard is the key for this group. Winnipeg yielded simply 13.4 focuses per game last season, which was one of the stingiest imprints in CFL history. The Bombers lost driving rusher Andrew Harris to the Argonauts in free organization this offseason, we yet realize individual running backs will generally be somewhat misrepresented in the cutting edge game.
The Blue Bombers' +250 CFL chances actually have a lot of potential gain. This group has just prevailed upon the beyond couple of years, and I see no great explanation to accept they'll stop any time soon.
Hamilton Tiger-Cats (+500) The Tiger-Cats completed second in the East Division behind the Argonauts last season with a 8-6 record across 14 games. They safeguarded home field well (5-2), yet battled a piece out and about (3-4).
Hamilton made an unexpected race to the Gray Cup after areas of strength for a 1 completion over their last five normal season games. The Ti-Cats got a simple 23-12 success over Montreal at home in the East Semi-Final before a steamed 27-19 win at Toronto in the East Final.
Hamilton is seeking win the Gray Cup interestingly starting around 1999, yet it will not be simple. CFL wagering locales might be misrepresenting this group a piece after its unforeseen rushed to the last, and they're really one-point dark horses at Saskatchewan in the main round of the time.
The Ti-Cats' +500 CFL wagering potentials for success don't actually have out according to a worth viewpoint. 스보벳
Saskatchewan Roughriders (+550) Saskatchewan completed second in the West Division at 9-5 last season, two games south of the primary spot Blue Bombers. The Roughriders got off to a promising 3-0 beginning, just to lose four of their next six.
A four-game series of wins followed, nonetheless, before their 24-3 victory misfortune at Hamilton in the season finale. The Roughriders required extra time to move beyond the Calgary Stampeders in the West Semi-Final at home before a tight 21-17 difficulty to the Blue Bombers in Winnipeg in the West Final.
Regardless of a strong success misfortune record, the Roughriders completed only seventh out of the CFL's nine groups in focuses per game at 20.3 a season back. Saskatchewan will expect further developed play from 29-year-old QB Cody Fajardo, who got done with a 16:15 score to-capture proportion in 2021.
Toronto Argonauts (+600) On the off chance that you need a decent worth, the Argonauts' +600 CFL chances look pretty engaging. Toronto went 9-5 a season back to complete a game in front of Hamilton in the East Division standings. They shut the season with six successes over their last eight games, including a significant 31-12 win over Hamilton in the penultimate normal season challenge.
The Args had a first-round bye because of completing on the division, however they at last fell, 27-19, at home to Hamilton in the East Final.
McLeod Bethel-Thompson re-endorsed with the Argonauts this past offseason, and the forthcoming effort will be his fifth with the establishment. He ignored for only 2,300 yards with 12 scores to 11 INTs a season back, however he was held out of the end zone in the season finisher misfortune to the Ti-Cats.
Regardless of completing in the lead position in the East, the Argonauts have quite recently the fourth-best CFL chances of any group to win the Gray Cup in 2022.
Calgary Stampeders (+600) The Stampeders completed 8-6 a season back, which was great for third in the West behind Winnipeg and Saskatchewan. Notwithstanding, Calgary's 2021 was actually a story of two seasons.
Things got off to an unquestionably ominous 2-5 beginning that included misfortunes to the humble BC Lions and Edmonton Elks. Notwithstanding, they made something happen incredibly after their Week 8 bye.
Following the off week, the Stampeders shut the season with wins in six of their last seven games. They were surely supported by a matchup against a Blue Bombers side playing a large portion of its reinforcements in Week 16, however you can play the games on your timetable.
The Stampeders looked amazing in their two preseason games, but against more vulnerable adversaries. Calgary got a 41-6 win over British Columbia toward the finish of May before a 37-7 destroying of Edmonton last Friday. We can't gather a lot from preseason results, yet the Stampeders' +600 CFL wagering chances are enticing given the way that well they played to end the '21 season.
Montreal Alouettes (+900) The Alouettes went only 7-7 a year prior, yet that was sufficient to punch a season finisher ticket in the East Division. Tragically, Montreal would proceed to lose to Hamilton, 23-12, in the East Semi-Final.
Montreal didn't enter the postseason in that frame of mind of structure subsequent to dropping three of their last four normal season challenges. That was still adequate to qualify in the more vulnerable East, in any case.
On June seventh, lead trainer Khari Jones named Vernon Adams as his beginning QB for the Alouettes' Week 1 conflict with the Stampeders. Neither Adams nor reinforcement Trevor Harris played all that well in Montreal's new preseason prevail upon the Redblacks, yet Adams is possible the protected decision. GET MORE INFO
He'll hope to return after a shoulder injury sidelined him until the end of last season back in October. Before the injury, Adams tossed for more than 1,900 yards with 14 scores to nine INTs.
Ottawa Redblacks (+1200) The Redblacks are one of the CFL's most up to date groups. The 2022 mission will be Ottawa's eighth in the association, and they'll be hoping to get once more into the end of the season games following a two-year dry spell.
Ottawa began the season with a strong 16-12 success over Edmonton, yet everything went easy from now on. The Redblacks lost every one of their next five after that before one more success over the humble Elks in Week 7. Six additional losses followed before a 19-18 win over Edmonton in the season finale.
That obvious the subsequent straight season where the Redblacks marshaled only three successes, however this group delighted in a lot of progress before that. Ottawa progressed to three Gray Cups in four years and won it interestingly back in 2016.
Previous Oregon champion Jeremiah Masoli will assume control in Ottawa interestingly in the wake of expenditure the last eight seasons with Hamilton. Masoli finished 20 of his 25 passes for 185 yards and two scores as a physical issue substitution for Dane Evans in the Gray Cup misfortune to Winnipeg.
With a more proficient QB under focus, maybe the Redblacks can at long last return to their triumphant ways.
English Columbia Lions (+1600) The BC Lions completed only 5-9 a season back, which would've been the most terrible imprint in the East Division notwithstanding the deplorable 3-11 Edmonton Elks.
BC really got off to a really great 4-2 beginning prior to winning only once in the last eight games. That solitary triumph came against, you got it, Edmonton, in the season finale.
Lions lead trainer Rick Campbell named Nathan Rourke as his group's starter for the impending season. Rourke filled in as Michael Reilly's reinforcement as a newbie last season, yet Reilly chose to resign.
Rourke's naiveté makes the Lions an undeniably challenging bet to trust at their +1600 Gray Cup chances. He tossed a bigger number of scores than captures in his two games as the starter a season prior.
