Never try downloading a house.
It doesn’t even work that way but still.
*inserts a USB stick into a socket in the wall*
“No! You can’t! Do you realise what you’re doing?!”
“Yeah?”
“Don’t you see what’s going to happen! You’ll end up downloading the entire HOUSE!!!!”
“So?”
“If you do that you’ll unleash forces you never dreamed could exist! Stop this now please! I urge you!”
“Pfft. Rubbish.”
*the house suddenly begins to shake and shudder violently*
“Uh oh…”
“You hear that?! That’s the noise of this house screaming out in rage!!!!!”
*camera zooms in on USB stick, shaking continues violently*
*Doctor Who cliffhanger stinger*
*cut to end credits with Dr Who theme*

Taken yesterday. My cool little setup at the library. I took my usb flash drive and loaded it up with various portable installations of programs including PPSSPP, Foobar2000, Soulseek and Firefox. While music was downloading in slsk I played some Final Fantasy.

Best USB Flash Drives to Buy in 2024
The best USB flash drives provide portable storage in a little form, making them similar to digital pocket superheroes. These clever devices are available in a range of capacities, from tiny bits to huge Terabytes of so there’s bound to be one that suits any requirement.

Ok but also (speaking from personal experience from work 2 days ago) DO NOT store the only copy of something on a flash drive/USB stick.
Quote from my computer science partner earlier this week: “Technically all memory has a finite lifespan, but flash memory in particular is measured not in time (like hard drives are), but in the amount of times you access the data. Plus, much like sd cards, there’s a decent number of known faulty [USB sticks] that are sold on purpose”
If you are going to store files on flash memory, they absolutely must have an up to date backup somewhere that is more reliable storage. Which might honestly mean the safest place for them is in a cloud (if you cannot afford a more reliable form of personal, physical storage) which genuinely sucks because everyone should always have the accessible option to own the files they create.
I guess in some instances it’s a matter of judging for yourself the risk of losing access to the file forever: physical flash storage that will break after some (arbitrary?) number of times you access the data vs cloud storage where you may someday be denied access to your files that you don’t fully own
I am begging people to use LibreOffice and personal storage devices like hard drives or USB sticks instead of relying 100% on Google Docs. LibreOffice is free and open-source, it saves files to your own computer, and it lets you save as many different file types. You can write in it, format ebooks in it, and do everything you might possibly need to do as a writer.
"Oh, but I'll lose my USB stick--" Fine, back things up in whatever cloud you use as a form of extra protection, but you should also try your absolute damnedest to also put them on some form of storage that isn't a cloud.
I know it's not accessible to everyone, but if you at all have the ability, don't rely on shit that lives on other people's computers. Especially with everything going on with AI theft and aggressive censorship of adult media. If you don't store your files on your own personal computer that you have control over, your files aren't fully yours, and they're at the whims of whoever owns the cloud.
Learn where your files are stored and how to access them. Get into the habit of backing up your files to your own personal storage. Even if you're not up for intense tech research and you don't care about how the computer actually works, please stop letting your art live in corporate clouds.

Found the USB stick that I carried around with me from 2004 to some time in the early 2010s! It's 256mb- Looking up a review of them online, apparently the 1GB version, that seemed miraculous, cost around £300. At the time I was just glad that I no longer had to find room in my pocket for a floppy disk, or to decide which writing project I wanted to take with me to an Internet cafe.
I wish that we still did clear cases. If nothing else, it's a minor security feature when you can see instantly whether or not something has a microphone in it XD
