Do you like turtles?
"Turtles are nice!.. they're beautiful sea creatures, in fact!.. I really do like turtles!.. I could ramble all day about them, if I could!.." "Where'd you get that turtle, Kinito?" "Ah.. Don't worry, Sam!.. it's a PNG!.. after all.. I would never encourage taking real turtles out of their habitat!" "Ohhh.. a PNG.. .. right.."
Tumblr media
"Would you, like to hold the PNG turtle, next, Sam?" "Oh.. sure!.. it.. doesn't bite does it?.."
Tumblr media
"I doubt it would!.. it can't even feel!.. let alone eat!, as it's not the real thing!!" "Well.. in that case.. I'd love to hold it!.." "..though.. speaking of turtles.. do you think Jones would like to hold the turtle too?, after my turn?.." "Maybe!.. we'll just have to ask them!"
(Funny that you ask this question!, one of the mods behind this blog, ahem, Soni, (hi!), actually loves turtles!.. they're my favorite sea creature!.. err.. well I have a lot of favorite sea creatures.. but turtles have been a childhood favorite for a while now!, at least for me!!) - Mod Soni

Please Start Archiving in the US
With current events, I think it is prudent that everyone, that is able to, needs start archiving shit. I am a former library worker but I do not know much about cybersecurity. If you do want to go down that route please research and keep you and your archive safe :). The more copies that are preserved, then the more likely it is that the media will survive. Even if you save only 2 files that is still important!
First, I will list how to create an computer archive and best practices, then I will provide a list of known targets and suggested materials to add.
You need somewhere to store your data most people will use their computer's storage drive but you need to have backups! Do not rely on cloud storage solutions, they require internet connection are vulnerable to data breaches, and the companies that store that data must follow any laws that the government may decide to pass. USBs or external hardrives are best options. CDs can be used in a pinch, but are more likely to degrade as well as having lower storage capacity then the previous options. Use whatever you have lying around, you do not need to spend money if you don't want to.
When saving data use file formats that are common and able to be read without use of a special software. (that means no .docx) PDF/A is the gold standard for archiving. It is a subtype of pdf that contains metadata, such as typefaces and graphical info, that ensure the files are read properly in the future. Adobe Acrobat is able to save and convert documents into PDF/A. PDFTron, DocuPub, and Ghostscript are all free or have free versions that create pdf/a files. PNG, JPEG2000, .txt, MP3, wav, are other common file types that the Smithsonian recommends for data storage. For a full list of types to use and avoid, see the sources cited at the bottom.
What are we archiving?
Please gather both fiction and nonfiction resources. Nonfiction collection ideas: Current news clips, local history of marginalized communities, interviews, biographies, memoirs, zines, and art pieces. Saving scientific research is incredibly important! In 1933, one of the first places they targeted was the Institute of Sexual Science. Lots of what was stored there was never recovered. Environmental science, trans and intersex health, and minority history will likely be targeted first. For fiction, the most commonly challenged books last year were: 1) GenderQueer by Maia Kobabe 2) All Boys Aren't Blue by George Johnson 3) This Book is Gay by Juno Dawson 4) The of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky 5) Flamer by Mike Curato 6) The Bluest Eyes by Toni Morrison 7) Me and Earl and the Dying Girl by Jesse Andrews 8) Tricks by Ellen Hopkins 9) Let's Talk about it (Teen guide to sex, relationships, and being a human) by Erika Moen and Matthew Nolan 10) Sold by Patricia McCormick I present this list so you have an idea of what is normally targeted. Books that describe racism and queer identities are most common, but other targets include any depictions of violence, drugs, sex. Use your personal archive to accumulate data that you personally are passionate about. The more niche a topic the more likely it is that other people will not have it in their storage.
Lastly, please remember as an archivist you are not there to determine if a piece is worthy of being saved. Just because you do not like or agree with the message does not mean it will be saved from being banned. All artworks amateur or professional are worthy of being archived.

The shit David has to deal with.
Certain green-associated units have, several times, deleted or replaced the files of dead units that David extracted with other things. Mostly Rickrolls. Sometimes it's a png jumpscare. David has sworn off using green USBs, yet one always still manages to end up in his office somehow... usually after a suspicious death that David turned his back to for ONE SECOND. His lamp distracted him (that's a whole OTHER joke that I might, one day, explain. Maybe.) for ONE. SECOND. And the videos of Plungers final moments were replaced by a Rickroll.

apple corporation I hope your listening cuz I have some demands
first off stop making shit so thin. I get it, it was cool to show off how compact motherboards could get but I need room for all my ports. also add more ports, usb, headphone jack allll the good shit.
reincorporate disc drives into things, put a disc drive on the ipad you pussies I KNOW you can!
make it so that when you order a phone, you can also get a custom case with whatever pngs you want. you don’t even make money off of phonecases, there’s a billion other companies that make that shit.
start packing chargers in with the phone again ANDDD the block don’t skimp out on that part!! and while you’re at it make the charger cords more durable, like I need this thing to be able to hold MY OWN weight and have the flexibility of a modern day fujoshi when it comes to gay men.
let me transport things from one device to another without using the cloud PLEASE! my family are all on the same plan and I have some very private information id like to keep to myself. also fix family plans, I have no fucking clue why but that shit always gets in the way of something
put rgb lights into the apple logo, like onto the fucking phone, do it, you won’t.

Thinking about graphic design student!Kaiser and Ness (aka what if they went to my school😔)
Tags: gn!graphic design student!reader, reader is best friends with Kaiser and Ness, inserting them into my school so everything is from my experience!!
(A/N: for context it's not a college and not really a regular school but more like a school with subjects that prepare you to become a graphic designer (+you have a graphic design degree when you graduate) the only regular subjects there are Maths, English and German (cause I'm from Germany))
-Kaiser starts argumenting with the teacher when they mention doing the lesson in the computer room instead of the classroom. Kaiser is just like "I did NOT carry my laptop here and I'm NOT paying for all those programs just to use the school computers"
-he always wins those arguments which means your class gets to stay in the classroom (which is WAY better than the computer room)
-Kaiser would definitely put a picture of himself as the background of the school computer if the class went to the computer room (which happened a lot in the beginning of the year before everyone had their laptops)
-out of you three Ness is the only one who always brings a USB stick with him, so half of the files on there are yours and Kaiser's
"OCH NE SCHON WIEDER KABELSALAT" (OH NO CABLE CLUTTER AGAIN") -Kaiser when he takes out his charging cables for his laptop and phone out of his bag
-Kaiser makes Ness plug in and unplug his chargers all the time
-Ness is definitely a teacher's pet in drawing class. He always finishes his tasks on time and doesn't complain about the teacher's criticism like some of your classmates do
-but if the teacher gives criticism to Kaiser, as soon as they walk away Ness goes on to praise Kaiser's work about how perfect it is (even when it's really not)
-Ness is scared of the printer because he pressed a wrong button once so now you have to do all the printing for him
-Kaiser doesn't participate in mediatechnics class and because of that he has no idea how to use programs like InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator so he always asks you or Ness to send him your files
-he needs those files so he can act as if he did something in class in case the teacher walks by to check
-if you need to use those programs during classes like graphic design or typography, expect Kaiser to ask "How do I do this?" every five minutes
-if you tell him to just pay attention in mediatechnics class he just says "whatever" and watches a tutorial on YouTube
-despite not knowing anything about the programs and just learning as he goes, Kaiser's projects end up really good
-if the school WiFi doesn't work, Kaiser lets you and Ness use his hotspot as a thank you for giving him your files all the time
-the pain in all three of you every time a "transparent png" isn't actually transparent

Love the photos. What’s your process for exporting GB Camera photos? I bought a GB Operator that I’m having trouble with and was looking for other options.
Thank you!
I use the BENNVENN Joey JR in CAM mode for exporting my photos. It gives me BMP exports of my images that I used to convert manually into png images. Now I just grab the gb cam save file and bring them into this site and color them from there:
It's a very simple adapter, it basically acts like a usb drive and works on any device that can read usb drives as far as I know. I've been able to back up my saves and images from my phone with it!
I've never used a GB Operator, the last time I saw it in use was in a video I watched years ago, but if it can let you dump your save file then I'd say keep using it!
There are tools made by the gameboy camera community that let you get images from your save file. The one I shared by Herrzatacke is the best one I've used!

ok I literally give up. Trying to get my photos backed up from my iPhone 12 to my Macbook. Neither Image Capture nor iPhotos works - I keep getting error messages. I got one of those adapters to connect your phone to a USB drive. However, it converts my photos to HEIC photos (which means I have to convert them) and strips the photos of metadata. I downloaded the photos using my work Thinkpad and again, most photos show up as HEIC and all photos are stripped of metadata. I could use iCloud but I only have 5GB free before I'm charged for more space. I thought I would just email myself the photos in small groups but again, all photos are stripped of metadata. I'm at a loss. The only metadata that is retained if I use iCloud is the date and time but if I convert the file from HEIC to PNG again the metadata is lost. And I can upload them to Gdrive but again it's an HEIC file and again the metadata is stripped.

“I had a dream. I was in a strange land. A vast wilderness. I went on and on, but met no one. I called, I shouted... but no one answered. I was alone.”
-Akira Kurosawa, Ran
<< Ch1-5 Ch 6-10>>
Chapter 1
Look, I get this question a lot for obvious reasons, so I know you won’t like the answer. It’s dissatisfying. But, because you asked, the best cybersecurity commercially available is something called an air-gapped computer.
An air-gapped computer has no network card. You won’t see a cerulean ethernet cord spouting from the stern of the case. There’s no hard, hollow plastic antenna to receive a wifi signal. It doesn’t have Bluetooth. My compsci professor at Tech explained it like this: there’s a literal wall of air—a gap—between the computer and anything that could inject it with compromising code. This abstinence-only approach makes air-gapped computers cheap, simple, and impenetrably secure.
But much like celibacy, not a lot of people opt for the air-gapped method. What’s the point of a computer, they ask, without e-mail and Twitter and porn? And I understand that. There were days I got so dog-tired of the manual data dumps, of examining each file down to the binary before connecting the USB, of hand-transcribing scraps of code onto sheets of paper, of the day-to-day ennui of existence inside those invisible walls. But when I broke into a system, all I saw back then was each and every way very, very bad things could get in.
The air wall was better. It let me breathe.
My laptop had to be online so I could access those vulnerable systems, but my desktop was air-gapped—a little black lockbox of my pdfs, jpgs, pngs, mp3s, mp4s, xls, txts, zips, bins, bats, dats, all my associate backgrounds and every line of my code. Knowing how safe they were in there calmed me at times like this, when I felt Julian Ek’s omniscient data network watching me like an enormous, electronic eye.
Notifications came like machine-gun fire into my phone. My apartment was dark, black under blackout curtains. I saw nothing, heard nothing, felt nothing but automated search alert after automated search alert filling my notifications: ek trial, julian ek trial, ek trial update, ek trial verdict, ek inc, joseph chambers, joseph chambers shooting, joseph chambers deepfaEk, deepfaEk, deepfaEk scandal, deepfaEk shooting edit, deepfaEk trial. More and more, on and on. I With dread, I went to Twitter, and there it was in blue and white. #EkAcquitted. It was the #2 trending topic, below #NationalVideoGamesDay. My hands began to shake. It had to be misreported—a mistake. I searched “Ek trial” and clicked the first link, scrolling past Ashlan’s disbarment and the Marshals’ conspiracy convictions to read the 6 words I’d dreaded for 4 years.
Julian Ek acquitted on all charges.
Ek walked. I went to the Herald for nothing; became a fugitive for nothing. I gave up my parents, my friends, my condo—my dream job obviously. I blew my whole life up, and now I’m stuck here, all alone on the other side of the world. Jeopardy attached, meaning I was officially of no use to anyone; meaning I could never, ever go back home. This dusty, pitch-black 300-square foot apartment really was my life.
I was hyperventilating. Breath after keening breath, air refused to reach my lungs, only rattle in the back of my throat. My head and stomach and knees went fuzzy. My phone screen smeared as it slipped from my hands. I reached for it and missed. The clatter of it hitting the floor—the dull pain of my thigh hitting the floor too—degraded into garbling static as I sank into gasping, grasping unconsciousness.
