One Man’s Opinion on Retirement
Stephen Jay Morris

©Scientific Morality
Once again, I must remind you that every human being is different. However, one gender has trouble with retirement: male. Why? The male ego. Thanks to the constant haranguing by advocates of masculinity, some men think that retirement is a death sentence to their identities. It’s part of the male castration complex. Upon retirement, you lose the respect of people who now view you as a useless, babbling nobody. You are regarded as a child again. Some dudes must be forced into retirement because they refuse to go there. In a capitalist society, you are either a master or a slave. Capitalists (masters) never have to retire because they have enough money to allow them 10 lifetimes. Now, as a worker (slave) who retires, you can no longer make any capitalist rich. However, your body ultimately breaks down from arthritis and heart disease, and you can no longer function without physical discomfort.
A lot of retirees do not have any savings or investment income, so they are dependent upon pensions and/or Social Security. As such, they are on fixed incomes. Plastic conservatives point their boney fingers at them and declare it was their fault: “You didn’t handle your money right! You spent it on capricious stuff like a sports car or a 500-dollar pair of sneakers. You should have invested your money or saved more!” So, like a good little flunkey, you feel guilty for having burdened rich, White guys to pay taxes to fund your Medicare or Social-Security benefits. Even when you lost your job during your working years and were eligible for unemployment benefits, you didn’t sign up because of feeling embarrassed over your plight.
Some men go through the extremes of depression and then suicide. Others become hermits and withdraw from society. Why is this? Because we live in society that celebrates wealth and downplays the proletariat. Plus, old people are viewed as annoying and useless, like children.
I am glad I have a different attitude towards retirement.
I am a subject of Gerontology. I state my case here. After an anfractuous life and being yelled at by alarm clocks, I am here to state: I love retirement! The money sucks, but the freedom is priceless. Many seniors go to Las Vegas and sit in front of those one-armed bandits all day, hoping for a big payoff. As for me? I was never good at making money. Plus, I never cared for it. To me, money was something you needed to buy art supplies and chilidogs. I had a passion for the arts and other things, like musical instruments. You needed money to buy birthday presents or other gifts to show your friends that you valued their friendship. Well, not me. A lot of people I knew thought I was a cheap asshole. Maybe I was.
Retirement to me is living in freedom. I sleep as long as I want. I don’t have anything scheduled. I can literally stop and smell the roses. The only notable difference in my activities is that I see medical doctors more. But nobody points at me and tells me to be a man! I couldn’t even if wanted to. It takes me two minutes to get up from my couch. I don’t have to prove anything to anybody. I can walk away from anything and not care. I am happily married and in love.
In this country (USA), nobody has respect for elders. We are just a nuisance. President Biden is one those men who refuses to quit, just like Donald Trump. The selfishness of these two men is astounding! Should one of them die of natural causes during their term in office, it would put the entire nation in political crises. But, do they care? Hell no! They’re dead!
As for me, I am still alive, and I can take a long lunch if I want to!  Retirement: plan for it and have fun year-round!

The Scope for Accountants in the US: Role, Salary & Stability
Accounting, often referred to as the "language of business," is a profession that plays a fundamental role in the financial health and success of organizations. In the United States, the field of accounting offers a wide range of opportunities, competitive salaries, and long-term stability. In this comprehensive article, we will explore the scope for accountants in the US, including their roles, salary expectations, the stability that comes with this profession, and the transformative pathway offered by Miles Education for Indian accountants seeking to build their careers in the USA.
The Role of Accountants in the US

Accountants in the United States perform a variety of crucial roles that are essential for the functioning and success of businesses, both large and small. Here are some of the key roles accountants play:
Financial Reporting: Accountants are responsible for preparing and analyzing financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements. These reports provide crucial information for decision-makers within organizations and for external stakeholders such as investors, creditors, and regulatory authorities.
Taxation: Tax accountants specialize in helping individuals and businesses comply with tax laws and regulations. They prepare tax returns, identify tax-saving strategies, and ensure that organizations minimize their tax liabilities while remaining in full compliance with the law.
Auditing: Auditors examine financial records and statements to verify their accuracy and ensure compliance with accounting standards. They play a critical role in providing assurance to investors and stakeholders that financial information is reliable.
Management Accounting: Management accountants work within organizations to provide internal financial information and analysis. They help in budgeting, cost control, and decision-making by providing insights into the financial performance of various business units and projects.
Forensic Accounting: Forensic accountants specialize in investigating financial irregularities, fraud, and financial disputes. They are often called upon to provide expert testimony in legal proceedings.
Advisory Services: Accountants often serve as financial advisors, helping individuals and businesses make informed financial decisions. This may include investment planning, retirement planning, and risk management.
Compliance and Risk Management: Accountants are involved in ensuring that organizations adhere to financial regulations and manage financial risks effectively. This is particularly important in industries such as banking and finance.
Information Systems: With the increasing reliance on technology, some accountants specialize in information systems, ensuring that financial data is accurately recorded and processed through various software applications.
Salary Expectations for Accountants in the US
One of the most attractive aspects of pursuing a career in accounting in the United States is the potential for competitive salaries. Accounting professionals are well-compensated, and salary expectations vary based on factors such as location, experience, education, and industry. Here's a breakdown of what you can expect in terms of salary:
Entry-Level Positions: For recent graduates or those with minimal experience, entry-level positions like staff accountant or junior auditor typically offer competitive starting salaries. These salaries can range from $45,000 to $65,000 per year, depending on the location and specific role.
Experienced Accountants: As accountants gain experience and expertise, their earning potential increases significantly. Experienced accountants can earn salaries ranging from $70,000 to $120,000 or more per year. Senior roles, such as senior accountant, senior auditor, or accounting manager, often come with higher compensation.
CPA Certification: Becoming a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is a significant career milestone that can lead to higher salaries. CPAs often earn salaries on the higher end of the spectrum, with many exceeding $100,000 annually, especially in roles such as tax manager or finance director.
Industry and Location: The industry and location also play a crucial role in determining salary levels. Accountants working in major metropolitan areas, particularly in financial hubs like New York City or San Francisco, tend to earn higher salaries due to the higher cost of living. Industries such as finance, healthcare, and technology often offer some of the most competitive compensation packages.
Specializations: Specializing in areas such as forensic accounting, taxation, or management consulting can lead to higher earning potential. These specialized roles often command premium salaries due to the specialized knowledge and skills required.
It's important to note that salary ranges can vary based on the most recent data and economic conditions. Additionally, factors like negotiation skills, professional certifications, and a track record of success can influence individual compensation.
Stability in the Accounting Profession
The stability of the accounting profession in the United States is a significant draw for individuals considering a career in this field. Several factors contribute to the long-term stability of accounting careers:
Constant Demand: Regardless of economic conditions, businesses require accounting professionals to manage their finances, ensure compliance with tax laws, and provide financial insights. This consistent demand for accounting services contributes to job stability.
Regulatory Environment: Accounting is a highly regulated profession in the US. Stringent financial reporting and auditing standards, as well as tax regulations, ensure that there will always be a need for skilled accountants to navigate complex compliance requirements.
Globalization: As businesses expand globally, the demand for accountants with expertise in international accounting standards and cross-border transactions is increasing. Accountants who can navigate global financial regulations are highly sought after.
Advancement Opportunities: The accounting profession offers a clear path for career advancement. As professionals gain experience and additional certifications, they can move into higher-paying roles and leadership positions.
Resilience in Economic Downturns: During economic downturns, businesses often rely on accountants to help them manage financial challenges, make cost-saving decisions, and navigate complex tax laws. This resilience in challenging economic times contributes to job stability.
Diverse Industries: Accountants can work in a wide range of industries, from healthcare and technology to government and nonprofit organizations. This diversity of opportunities means that accountants can adapt to changing market conditions by transitioning to different sectors.
Miles US Pathway: Transforming Your Accounting Career
While the accounting profession in the US offers remarkable opportunities, Indian accountants can take their careers to new heights through the Miles US Pathway program. This three-year work permit allows you to immerse yourself in the American work culture, build a strong professional network, and seize incredible career opportunities.

McDonald's announced changes to some of its most popular menu items last week, affecting the Big Mac and McDouble, among other things.
The fast food giant claims the changes will improve the flavor of its top-performing burgers. The improvements come down to four main changes, according to McDonald's: better, softer buns, consistently melted cheese, a better sear on the patties and, simplest of all, more Big Mac sauce.
The chain says it has also started adding white onions to the patties as they are searing to improve the flavor.
"I’ll always remember my first burger from McDonald’s. And now my culinary team and I have the best job in the world: thinking about ways to bring even more of that iconic McDonald’s taste to fans," McDonald's USA senior director of culinary innovation Chad Schafer said in a statement.

Are You 55+? Here’s Why You Should Join an Active Senior Living Community
Tumblr media
The share of people aged 65 and above in the total population of USA is projected to increase from 16.9% in 2020 to 22% in 2050. As the elderly population rises, people are becoming increasingly aware of how to live worry-free in their golden years. Today, Americans often plan to retire early at the age of 62 since they can receive Social Security retirement benefits at this age itself.
It’s therefore important to start planning for a relaxed post-retirement life even earlier. Those who wish to live independently after 55 while also having access to convenient amenities, it’s a good idea to join an active senior living community. An example is a 55+ community, an established active living area where at least one resident above 55 can live in each property.
Here are the many reasons why you can consider being a part of an active senior living community after you turn 55.
Affordable Cost of Living
Houses in 55+ communities are usually small, and you may find them in areas with townhouses, condos, and apartments. These small units are a good way to downsize your life when you are beginning a new chapter.
The average monthly rent in USA is more than $1,300 in 2023. Americans who wish to move, need to pay even higher prices. But you can purchase a retirement home in an active senior living community at a much lower price. The monthly cost of living varies from one state to another.
Moreover, property taxes are usually lower in such a community since they necessarily don’t have to support after-school programs and school funding like other residential neighborhoods do.
Widespread Locations
You can find a reputed 55+ community in nearly all the major states in the US. For instance, you can find it in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Missouri, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, South Carolina, and other important states. So, it’s easy to find a retirement home in such a community in a suitable location. Often, as an added advantage, a 55+ community is strategically located near quality healthcare facilities.
Multiple Amenities and Low-Maintenance
A great benefit of joining an active retirement community is that you can get abundant amenities. Also, the maintenance of the home, landscape, and the entire community is often taken care of.
If you become a part of a top 55+ community, you can access various amenities as follows to make your life easy and vibrant:
Hair salon
Multi-denominational chapel
Game room
Billiards room
Craft room
Computer room
Movie theater
Gym
Serenity room
Community room with a kitchen
Library
Mailroom
Safety and Security
Our active senior living communities utilize security technology and are strategically located in places with low crime rates. If you have guests, they will generally have to be approved by the residents of the community. Therefore, there’s no cause for worry regarding safety.
A 55+ community also offers a peaceful and loving environment where elderly people get to live together in harmony. For all these reasons, it’s good to join such a community to live a stress-free independent post-retirement life.

THE BASIC OLD AGE PENSION IN KOREA AND IT’S IMPLEMENTATION
Hi everyone! I was given an assignment to explore a topic in Asia that interested me and I couldn’t think of a more unexplored or important topic than elderly poverty in Korea. I hope you all enjoy reading it!
In a generation in which the world wide average life expectancy is over seventy years (Life Expectancy of the World Population, 2020) care for our elders is seemingly a necessity within society however, this is not always the case in the eyes of governments in some countries. Shockingly, Korea despite being known as a major exporter of goods, the motherland of major tech giants such as Samsung and LG and a major player in the global arena, is also holder of the highest senior citizen poverty rate according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development aka the OECD (Suk-yee, 2019) an international governmental organization. When looking at these statistics one must wonder; why and how is the Korean old age pension plan failing the country’s most vulnerable citizens? In the continuation of this article I will be explaining just that and the long-term effects this pension plan has on Korean citizens as well as the history behind the policy.
Tumblr media
One of the reasons for this policy implementation can be found in the history behind elder care in Korea. The Basic Old-Age Pension (BOAP) was implemented in 2008 covering approximately seventy percent of the elderly population within Korea (Shin & Do, 2014) providing up to just over the equivalent of roughly a hundred sixty eight dollars USD (USA, 2016). Given that minimum housing rent in South Korea is on average roughly two hundred fifty dollars USD (Go!, 2020) it is very easy to see how the BOAP simply does not cover enough expenses for the elderly especially those without other financial support. There’s a good reason for this. There is a dominant political ideology within the country for being solely responsible for one’s own welfare (Park, 2018). Over forty percent of seniors live with a child (Kim & Cook, 2011). This reflects the traditionally dominant role adult offspring have played in the Korean elder care system. Filial piety, a concept owing to the patriarchal systems and Confucian principles dominant in East Asian societies plays a heavy role in the prevalent family structure of having seniors of the family cohabiting with adult children (Kim & Cook, 2011). However, this structure does not account for modern education, life expectancies and the effects that they have. Additional to this the majority of the elderly population were born before the rapid development of the Korean economy and thus received little necessary education needed for higher paying jobs in which savings for retirement can be procured (Shin & Do, 2014). Before the implementation of the BOAP the Korean aging population suffered with more than forty-five percent of the elderly having incomes below half of the median household income in 2015 and only a quarter of the senior population in 2008 were covered by the country’s National Pension (Kim E.-W. , 2012). Although adult children support is still a major contributor to the elder population’s income to this day this traditional system is breaking down. In contrast to the eighty percent of elders cohabiting a home with their children in 1980 in 2005 that percentage dropped down to forty-nine percent (Kim E.-W. , 2012). Notably Korea is not the only country in which this has happened as similar East Asian countries such as Japan has also seen an increasing need in foreign caretakers for the elderly in order to keep up with the aging population especially with the increase of mobilization from rural to urban areas by younger generations for employment and a decreasing birth rate affecting the financial burden on elderly family members (Yoshimizu, 2014). Similarly, this became a problem in Korea as well. The BOAP was originally created to expand the low coverage the National Pension had (Shin & Do, 2014). After analyzing the history behind the implementation of the BOAP one question immediately comes to mind; what affects did the BOAP have on the senior population?
Tumblr media
The implementation of the BOAP was put in place with aims to secure a life of stability for the elderly and enhance their welfare. There are many sources of evidence that the pension plan has resulted in the improvement of mental health within children and grandchildren who would typically be providing as a sole contributor to three generations of children, parents and grandparents. In grandchildren there was a notable decrease in smoking participation and alcoholic beverage consumption (Ko, 2019). Effectively the BOAP was able to increase coverage for the elderly population from a quarter by the National Pension to a whopping seventy percent (Shin & Do, 2014). BOAP also significantly reduced difficulties in meeting basic needs like paying taxes and ensuring adequate living standards such as nutritious meals and heating to the overall elderly population (Shin & Do, 2014).Thus, in terms of financial benefit and insurance coverage the BOAP helped improve the conditions the Korean elderly were living through prior to the BOAP implementation.
Tumblr media
However, this does not mean the BOAP was successful in achieving its goal of stable living for the senior population. In a study done by Seung-Min Park on the happiness of older people in South Korea findings showed a negative association between the BOAP and the general happiness of the elderly (Park, 2018). This can be attributed to limited government funds at the implementation of the BOAP as well as the fact that the program benefits are limited to basic needs (Shin & Do, 2014). Additionally, there can be a stigma for the elderly receiving the BOAP as the program is means-tested and thus associates its beneficiaries with a lower financial status. When asked about their feelings on receiving BOAP benefits a large majority of elders expressed negative connotations with their status as a BOAP beneficiary (Park, 2018). In fact, financial wellbeing remains unchanged for the Korean senior population suggesting that perhaps the BOAP isn’t sufficient enough to improve the lives of the population (Shin & Do, 2014). Additional to this in a study done in 2018 findings showed that suicide ideation was 1.59 times more likely for elderly Koreans in poverty as opposed to their non impoverished counterparts (Lee & Atteraya, 2019), a troubling finding considering that Korea’s elderly living in poverty is totaled at forty-five percent of the population much higher than most first world countries (Kim J. , 2019). A well-known example of this poverty is Madam Yoo in Korea. Madam Yoo is an eighty-three-year-old elderly woman in Korea who made two dollars usd a day and came into notoriety due to the online media company Asian Boss’s viral videos bringing awareness to her situation and the elderly poverty problem in Korea (Asian Boss, 2018). From her situation we can see how the BOAP system can fail its beneficiaries as she is the mother of five children who are all unable to help her financially. In the growing economy familial support is growing to be more and more unreliable. There are many variables to this such as decreasing fertility rates as well as children’s education which may impact the offspring’s ability to provide financially for elders. Given that the BOAP total benefit amount is set at five percent of the average monthly income during the immediate three years before an individual begins the program it doesn’t effectively improve the situations of its beneficiaries (Park, 2018). Something else to keep in mind is that the BOAP was meant to be a temporary program as the government at the time of its implementation was limited in funds at the time. Thus, structurally it was never meant to be implemented in the long term. As a result it continues to be an insufficient welfare program for its beneficiaries.
youtube
While of the BOAP has provided many more benefits than its predecessor the National Pension Plan, it is still a far way from being the welfare program the Korean elderly population needs. The BOAP benefits from being the successor to the National Pension plan and providing more coverage to its dismal predecessor. As a result, the BOAP increases coverage for seniors by roughly forty-five percent providing more income to the Korean senior population. Adding on to this the supplemental income the BOAP provides greatly helps with necessities such as heating and nutritious meals for its beneficiaries. However, with this does not mean that the BOAP is quite at the level of welfare the Korean population needs for its seniors. The limitations of the BOAP is largely defined by the stigma it brings and the low budget for the BOAP. Given that the BOAP assumes itself to be supplemental income on top of familial support it in no way even covers a full minimum rental charge for the average South Korean. Furthermore, due to the total amount of the BOAP being so low it does little if anything to really improve the welfare of many senior beneficiaries. Finally, the political ideology of the beneficiaries’ generation may cause the BOAP to in fact reduce overall emotional wellness as it comes with the stigma of being an older citizen as well as financially insecure. Thus while the BOAP is an improvement for the elders of South Korea before its implementation it is still largely unsuccessful in lowering Korea’s status as a world leader in elderly poverty and still falls short of its goal.

Determining who gets to vote remains a State’s Right subject only to anti-discrimination clauses in a few amendments.
Some States have/are/plan to make it virtually impossible to cast a vote.
States can limit the vote to people who ~ individually ~ have a certain income. Eliminating seniors, half the working citizenry and homemakers.
In Texas such State restrictions on who could vote would reduce the number of Congressional Representatives apportioned . But the seven lowest population States could reduce the voting to millionaires only and each State would still have its two Senators and one Congressional Representative.
“No taxation without representation!” was a catch phrase of wealthy plutocrats who also used the Colonial Houses of Burgesses and then the State Legislatures to levy taxes on people to whom the Plutocrats denied representation.
Of course, today we pay sales taxes on beverages plus duties on any imported. An irony never examined in any US history text books.
Remember also that your history text books did not define ‘Burgesses’ which means “merchants or craftsmen who owned property in burghs and were allowed to trade in burghs free of charge.” “Owned property” as in owning land and buildings outright. Not someone paying a mortgage.
The Constitution enshrines principals of inequality based on a caste system of property and intergenerational wealth.
By any metric the average person in the US would have been better off if we’d remained a Dominion of Britain like Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Britain and its Dominions have higher literacy rates, better healthcare, better retirement, higher minimum wages, easier voting, better social services and LOWER combined taxation - even after the disasters of Brexit and Boris Johnson- than the USA! USA! USA!
In Britain and the Dominions the voters elect MPs who in turn select the Prime Minister. In the US the voters elect the Electoral College which, under the Constitution, chooses the President.

Last Go-Round with Senator Lamar Alexander
Final week, Tennessee’s retiring senior U.S. senator, Lamar Alexander, delivered on a long-standing promise to make himself obtainable to the Flyer for our model of an exit interview.
click on to enlarge
A really transient, edited model of that interview was revealed on this week’s hard-copy model of the Flyer. That model merely excerpted Alexander’s solutions to our request that he describe Donald Trump and Joe Biden and that he touch upon a latest installment of the Rachel Maddow Present on MSNBC recalling his early accession to the Tennessee governorship in 1978 to forestall the inevitability of predecessor Ray Blanton making unlawful pardons (this in mild of rumored pardons to return involving outgoing President Trump).
Right here, minus a little bit of small speak on each ends of the dialog, is the interview in its entirety, edited right here and there just for readability.
Now that you simply’re exiting the Senate, what are your plans? I’ve intentionally not made a plan. I heard a sportscaster say a couple of basketball participant, that could possibly be a significantly better basketball participant if he stopped making an attempt too arduous, and let the sport come to him. And so that is what I plan to do. I’ll transfer again to our residence in East Tennessee with Honey, and see what comes. The life I’ve lived has been an enchanting life. For the final 50 years, I’ve had the most effective seats in the home. And I am gonna flip the web page and see what chapter breaks.
I do know the one factor that in all of the interviews you’ve got had, and and for that matter in conversations you might have with folks, the one query that in a single kind or one other at all times comes up is what I’ll ask you now: Are you able to give a quick capsule of Donald Trump as you perceive him to be? The one factor that we will see actually is, he’s an efficient communicator, Ronald Reagan was known as a fantastic communicator for his day, however in a totally totally different approach. President Trump has mastered the web democracy in a approach no different public determine has. No one else comes near thrilling 72 million folks on Twitter to concentrate to what he says a number of occasions a day. So he is actually a fantastic communicator. He is self assured. He is gregarious if you’re round him. He is bold.
I’ve seen him in personal the place he works very nicely on points like the good American Outside Act, which might not have occurred with with out some key choices that he made or efforts to decrease insurance coverage charges for individuals who aren’t aren’t, haven’t got Obamacare subsidies. He like lots of people who’ve been in enterprise and never in politics. He is skinny skinned and he does not he isn’t accustomed to criticism. is not carried out.
And he has a method and conduct that is totally different than any of the presidents we have just lately had, which typically obscure his appreciable accomplishments like decrease taxes, conservative judges, fewer laws, and doubtless probably the most outstanding of all, presiding over a authorities that produced a 95 % efficient COVID vaccine, and eight or 9 months, as a substitute of eight or 9 years.”
Editor’s be aware: The COVID vaccines at present being touted as efficient weren’t created by the USA authorities, and even in the USA. Are you able to present an analogous capsule for President-elect Joe Biden? Joe is gregarious, respectable, pleasant. He is well-known and nicely favored in the USA Senate. He has the benefit of realizing leaders all around the world. He was chairman of the International Relations Committee for a very long time, and he has been vp. So he ought to come to the presidency about as nicely ready as anyone may. His largest problem goes to be the left wing of his personal get together. As a result of after they head off into socialism and defunding police, they lose greater than half the nation. And if he resists that, he’ll be capable to acquire some vital Republican help, I feel. and and be an efficient president.”
I’ve labored with him simply. I informed a narrative in my farewell deal with about that, about we had been engaged on the twenty first Century Cures laws which has carried out a lot amongst different issues to hurry the remedies within the vaccines that we see at the moment. And I bought caught, and I known as him and mentioned, Joe — he was Vice President — I can not get the White Home to maneuver. I’ve bought President Obama, personalised medication, and the invoice. I’ve bought the Most cancers Moonshot in there for you. Mitch McConnell wished regenerative medication, that is in there. Paul Ryan has discovered learn how to pay for it. However I can not get the White Home to maneuver — just like the butler, standing outdoors the door of the Oval Workplace, the place the order on a silver platter and nobody will open the door and take the order. And Joe Biden mentioned, if you wish to really feel like a butler, attempt being vp. So I labored with him nicely.
On twenty first Century Cures, he [Biden] performed a giant position in getting that carried out. And I’ve watched him work with Senator McConnell earlier than on behalf of the Obama administration to return to some agreements about taxes.
It was attention-grabbing that, on the day after your farewell deal with to the Senate, you made a speech in tribute to Congressional workers members. What I noticed the was that, you realize, the workers is totally essential to the success of any senator. I could not presumably have proven correct courtesy or effectivity or understood the problems with out some actually gifted, arduous working workers. And I noticed that if I attempted to thank them throughout my farewell deal with, it might make the deal with too lengthy to correctly acknowledge that. Possibly the salute to the workers speech yesterday, will begin a brand new custom within the Senate. Along with the principle deal with if you arrive and the farewell deal with, if you depart, I feel a salute to the workers speech can be a pleasant custom within the Senate.
I requested you to characterize Trump and Biden. What about Kamala Harris? You had an opportunity to have an opportunity to get to know her. She’s solely been there for 2 years and she or he’s been working for president for more often than not, so I do not know her very nicely.
Okay, nicely, yet one more of these. Bernie Sanders was requested years in the past what Republicans he revered and he named your title. That was the one title he talked about, actually. he mentioned, “I like Lamar.” So let me ask you, what are your ideas about Bernie? Nicely, I like Bernie. I simply do not agree with him. We have served on the identical Labor Committee. Now we have to work collectively, which I do with all senators. And one factor we each agree on is the significance of group well being facilities. So even when you might have as many variations as I do with Bernie Sanders, it’s potential to record discover some issues that you simply each agree on.
One of many issues that you simply spoke of in your farewell deal with was filibusters. And as I perceive it, the way in which filibuster rule nonetheless applies is that 60 votes are required for cloture of debate, besides within the case of government nominations and judicial nominees? Is that right? That is proper. We used to have a requirement of 60 for a presidential nominee, however no one ever did. I imply, not even Justice [Clarence] Thomas needed to have 60 when he was nominated. He was 52 to 48. Not one of the senators who opposed him requested that there be a 60-vote requirement. However on laws — not nominations, however laws — what the principles require is that earlier than you vote on it, you need to minimize off debate and also you’ve bought to have 60 votes. You  cannot simply decide the Republican majority on one thing like The Each Baby Succeeds Act and slap by means of a Republican repair. I’ve bought to go sit down with Patty Murray, who’s the rating Democrat on the committee and say, ‘Patty, I have to get to 60 votes on this.’ So can we come to a broad bipartisan settlement on it? We did that. And in reality, 85 senators voted for it. And if we will give you one thing that 85 of us can vote for and dwell with, then the nation can dwell with it.
That is the identical with civil rights, Medicare, Medicaid, the Panama Canal treaty. The true function of the Senate is to make use of to sort out powerful issues and see if we will get a broad settlement. And the filibuster forces us to try this. However not all, simply to run a freight practice by means of the home and let the bulk simply steamroll the minority.
A topic was highlighted just lately on The Rachel Maddow Present that I am positive you’ve got heard quite a bit about. This was the Blanton pardons inflicting your early accession to the workplace of governor. Do you see an analogy between the Blanton pardons, as scandalous as they had been, and the prospect of President Trump pardoning an entire slew of individuals, together with his family members, and possibly himself? No, I do not. I do not. What was taking place within the Blanton years was proof that individuals had been paying money for pardons in case for clemency. That was the issue. And the USA Lawyer knew it. And he was a Democrat. He known as me and requested me to be sworn in early to cease that. I have never heard any form of allegation that anybody’s paying to ensure that a pardon or clemency. And it is actually common for a president or a governor to situation pardons or clemencies on the finish of a time period. President Clinton, President Bush? Nicely, I will not say … I do know President Clinton made pardons. Most presidents, most governors situation them throughout their time, and particularly on the finish of their time. The problem in Tennessee in 1978 was money for clemency, not simply clemency.
There was hypothesis that there could also be some money concerned. Oh, there’s hypothesis all around the factor. What they’d in Tennessee in 1978, the FBI had proof of it, and the U.S. Lawyer knew it. And Blanton had mentioned that he was going to pardon or grant clemencies to those that the FBI and the U.S. Lawyer knew had paid money for his or her launch.
You had been born and raised in East Tennessee, and even in in occasions of the domination of Tennessee by Democrats, East Tennessee was Republican. How a lot of your Republicanism do you assume derives from the circumstances of your start and the way a lot is by alternative? Oh, a variety of it derives from the circumstances of my start. My nice grandfather, John Alexander, was a union officer within the Civil Warfare, from Blount County, and he was requested his politics, and he mentioned, “Republican. I bought shot.” So once I began in politics, the Republicans in Tennessee had been the Lincolnites, and the Lincolnites had been the mountaineers who got here from households have fought with the Union within the Civil Warfare. And the black Republicans, which had been the Lincoln league and Memphis, that was the Republican Get together within the ‘50s, and ‘60s in Tennessee. And that steadily modified through the years. And the Democrats at that early time had been folks with Accomplice ancestry. So the Civil Warfare dominated the voting patterns in Tennessee till very just lately.
One thing that is form of fascinating to me is that [Senator] Marsha Blackburn, who’s actually a really ideological Republican, hails from a Union county in Mississippi. That’s in all probability how that twig bought bent. You knew that, proper? Nicely, I did, I had heard that and and, and that that is the identical as my one county the place I am from. The congressional district by which I grew up, and the place I’ll dwell after I retire from the Senate, has by no means elected a democrat to Congress since Lincoln was President.
Okay. As I informed you, I might be skipping round a bit. One factor you stored saying if you had been working for president in 1996 was that, at each cease you talked about the way you lamented the passing of a time when college boys may take a pocket knife to highschool. I understood that to be an implicit metaphor, however I did not fairly grasp it. What did that imply to you, the pocket knife reference? Nicely, what that meant to me is that requirements and conduct have modified. Once I was a child, most boys carried a pocket knife to highschool, however we by no means considered utilizing it on one another. And if we had, we’d have ended up in in very, very critical hassle. These days, conduct is such that they do not enable pocket knives in faculties. And I feel that is a commentary on our household construction, on the pervasiveness of tv, and the pervasiveness of social media, and a reducing of behavioral requirements across the nation. You’re proper, it was a metaphor. However I feel it was an vital one. And what I used to be making an attempt to say was, that wasn’t an issue that Washington may repair and that if you wish to save college, that you simply needed to repair it in your personal group.
Additionally, in 1996, if you had been working for president, why did you wish to abolish the Schooling Division which you had headed? Nicely, I assumed we did not want it. In the event you in case you bear in mind in 1980 or ’81, once I was governor, I requested for a gathering with President Reagan. And I proposed that to him: Why do not you get the federal authorities utterly out of elementary and secondary schooling? And in trade, why do not you’re taking over Medicaid and get the states utterly out of Medicaid, so we have now accountability, so all people will know the accountability for making college lies with state and native authorities, and the accountability for Medicaid lies with the federal authorities.
I did not assume we would have liked a whole division to spend the federal {dollars} to assist schooling. Apart from about 8 or 9 %, all the cash that is spent for faculties actually is for low-income and disabled kids. We may simply have a check-writing operation that might ship that out to oldsters or to highschool districts, to the faculties the place these kids had been. That was only some years after the division was created. And what I mentioned within the Nineteen Nineties was the identical factor I mentioned, the Nineteen Eighties.
And, after which extra just lately, once we fastened No Baby Left Behind, in 2015, the entire function of it was to get Washington out of elementary and secondary schooling, and cut back its position. And the Wall Road Journal mentioned, that was the largest evolution of energy from Washington to the states and 25 years. It simply comes from a conviction I’ve that if you’d like good faculties, you are going to should create them your self. And you’ll’t anticipate folks at a distance to enhance scholar achievement within the third grade very a lot. It is gonna should be the trainer and the dad and mom locally. Who makes that occur?
Nicely, you’ve got answered what would have been my subsequent query. I used to be going to ask the principle distinction between each the Each Baby Succeeds Act, which you sponsored, and No Baby Left Behind, which it changed, however you type of accounted for that. That was the entire level of that — to revive to classroom academics and native college boards and oldsters a variety of choices which were transferred to Washington and to what had, in impact, turn out to be a nationwide college board, saying, ‘That is what it’s best to educate. That is how it’s best to outline what trainer is. That is what it’s best to do a couple of college that is in hassle. That is, that is how it’s best to reward excellent instructing.’ And my thought is that that may’t be that may’t be carried out from a distance it must be carried out regionally.
I’m keen on your reference to what you say you mentioned to President Reagan about Medicaid. What are your thought as of now? You opposed the Inexpensive Care Act? What are your ideas about it as of now going ahead? And what do you concentrate on the Medicare- for-All proposal? I do not like Medicare-for-All, as a result of what it does is take away your personal insurance coverage. And most of the people who’ve insurance coverage on medical insurance on the job like that insurance coverage, and after they hear that Medicare for all signifies that in case you’ve bought insurance coverage at FedEx, or in case you bought insurance coverage in your small enterprise, or wherever, that that is being taken away, and also you’re being put into Medicare, they do not like that concept. So I do not favor Medicare-for-All.
What I attempted to do was to push extra of the selections about insurance coverage insurance policies again to the states, the place they’d been earlier than so there could possibly be a higher mixture of insurance policies supplied, and folks may be capable to afford medical insurance. I feel the one factor that will not change is that of pre-existing situations whereby we’re previous the purpose of getting a rustic by which pre present situations aren’t coated by insurance coverage. So all people who needs it ought to be capable to purchase a coverage that covers pre present situations.
In your farewell deal with, you had been additionally fairly eloquent concerning the virtues of the 2 get together system. Is there a case to be made for a robust third get together on this nation? I do not assume so. As a result of I feel the entire level of presidency is to cope with huge issues, whether or not it is fixing faculties or roads or well being care or civil rights or racial justice, and give you an settlement or a conclusion that almost all of us can dwell with. And if we get too splintered — we have now three or 4 or 5 events — it makes it tougher to give you a consensus. So I feel we have now it about proper. In the USA Senate, you might have two events. After which you might have a requirement that you have to work with the opposite get together to get to cross a serious invoice. And so if we ever succeed, then we have an settlement that almost all of us can vote for and that many of the nation can dwell with. And that settlement often lasts for a very long time. And I feel a three-party system would jeopardize that.
I’ll boil issues down to 2 final questions. And considered one of them is: What was or has been the principle mistake of your political life, the one factor you would like you hadn’t carried out? Or may right? The primary mistake …[pauses]
You’ll have made one or two; most of us have. I ought to have walked throughout the state in 1974 as a substitute of 1978. That is one. That is one huge mistake. I’d have realized much more concerning the state and I’d have been quite a bit higher candidate and might need been elected that first time, and I’d have been quite a bit higher governor.
That’s an attention-grabbing reply. Now, what would you say is the principle achievement of your political life? Nicely, usually, I feel I ought to let others determine that out. I imply, I’ve tried to go away footprints which are good for the state and good for the nation. Now that I’ve had an opportunity to look again 40 or 45 years, the bringing the auto business to Tennessee within the early Nineteen Eighties in all probability has carried out probably the most to boost household incomes and enhance our lifestyle. In Tennessee within the early ’80s, we had no auto jobs. And instantly, over a time period, we turned in some methods the number-one auto state, with with the Saturn, Nissan, and Volkswagen crops, and practically 1000 suppliers in just about each county. And that got here at a time when Tennessee was the third-poorest state, when lots of our textile jobs had been leaving. And these new jobs that arrived had been higher jobs, greater paying jobs, and higher jobs for the long run.
So serving to to carry the auto business in, which in flip, brought on the three huge street applications that I proposed, so we would have the most effective four-lane freeway system within the nation, with zero debt. We paid for all that with taxes as a way to carry the suppliers, so suppliers could make just-in-time supply. Even the higher Colleges Program was part of that, as a result of I noticed after some time that if we wish to get higher jobs, we would have liked higher faculties. However the quick reply would in all probability be bringing within the auto business.
Nicely, it appears like I’ve bought possibly room for yet one more query: Did you need to take positions as a member of the Republican management that ran in any respect counter to your private preferences? Oh, I am positive. I am positive there have been positions that I took for all the Republican caucus that would not have been the very first thing out of my mouth if I might solely been talking for myself. , I used to be chosen chairman of the convention 3 times. And after some time, whereas I loved it, and I assumed I used to be good at it. I bought uninterested in i, as a result of it was all politics. It was political messaging. And I assumed there’s a greater cause to be in the USA Senate than that.
It is arduous to get right here. Onerous to remain right here. And when you’re right here, you may as nicely attempt to accomplish one thing good for the nation, and I used to be turning into chairman of a few vital committees. So I left that political messaging job to work on the problems I care probably the most about, And the final 9 years have been very satisfying. For me. I really feel like I’ve gotten up nearly each morning considering I may do one thing good for the nation, and gone to mattress most nights considering that I had.

Donating Strategically
Tumblr media
When it comes time for tax planning, there are few emotionally charged decisions than those around charitable giving. People tend to have a deep, personal attachments to the causes they support and have been donating to their chosen charity for years or even decades. People view their donations as a vital way to give back to society and to feel connected to a wider community, whether it be on a local, national or even spiritual level.
The task of deciding where and how to donate has become more important, and even more complex, as a result of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017, which reduced a key motivation for charitable giving. The near-doubling of the standard deduction for joint-filing married couples (currently sitting at $24,800) means that lots of families no longer get a benefit from itemizing their deductions, of which charitable donations has traditionally been a significant component. Only about 16 million households are estimated to have itemized their deductions in 2018, this is down from 37 million previously.
There are some early signs that charities are suffering the effects of this change. Individual giving fell to 1.1% in 2018 to $292 billion, or by 3.4% when adjusted for inflation, according to Giving USA 2019: The Annual Report on Philanthropy for the Year 2018. Giving by individuals has declined from 70% of total giving to 68% that year.
Options do exist for people to donate in a tax-efficient way, so long as they are willing to plan ahead. Most times, families are sticking with their old way of doing things without realizing that a change in their giving strategy can help charities and reduce their tax bill.
Here are three great tax strategies that individuals and families can adopt at any point in the year to make the most of their charitable giving:
Bunch your donations
Most philanthropically minded people should be considering bunching two years’ worth of donations into a single tax year and donating every other year rather than giving the same amount annually. This has always been a sensible tax strategy, but the drastic rise in the standard deduction has made it relevant for a much broader swath of households.
For example, take a family that has deductions of $10,000 in mortgage interest payments, $8,000 in property taxes, and wants to give $5,000 to charity. On an annual basis, the family would not have enough deductions to break through the standard deduction threshold and so they would get zero tax benefit from their donations. By bunching two years’ worth of $5,000 donations into the same tax year, they would surpass the standard deduction level by $3,200 and thus be able to reduce their taxable income by that amount.
Give from your retirement fund
Seniors often own their home outright and thus do not deduct mortgage interest, they are even less able to achieve tax benefits through itemized deductions. They do, however, have a powerful alternative in qualified charitable distributions (QCDs). If you are taking required minimum distributions, it may be advantageous for charitable giving to come out of your IRA account as QCDs.
These distributions, made permanent in 2015 as part of the Protecting Americans from Tax Hikes (PATH) Act, allow retirees to avoid paying income tax on distributions up to $100,000 and can satisfy their minimum distribution requirement. The charitable donations get transferred directly from the IRA to a qualified charity, and the income never shows up on their 1040. This strategy also has a secondary benefit of reducing adjusted gross income (AGI), which may impact Medicare premiums and the taxability of Social Security benefits.
Give appreciated securities, not cash
The longest stock market bull run in U.S history has left a ton of people’s brokerage accounts inflated with unrealized gains. These profits are a great source of charitable gifts, but it is usually a big mistake to sell the stock and write checks to charities with the proceeds. The very moment you sell the stock, you will have to pay capital gains tax on the profit.
For an annual donations of $1,000 or more, you might be far better off transferring the long-term appreciated stock directly to the entity you want to support. The gain disappears, leaving neither you nor the charity on the hook for it. The one catch is that this does not lend itself to a last-minute scramble to organize your charitable donations at the end of December. It takes time to prepare the groundwork — for instance, making sure your qualified charity has a brokerage account, arranging the transfer, and time for the transfer to go through. You must give yourself a few months or more or, ask those questions now, at the beginning of the year, when the charities, like Giving Center, might be in less of a rush themselves.
If you are giving consistently to charity, it means you have given thought to who you want to support and your mission. It only makes sense, then, to give a little more thought to how you support a cause, too.

0350: How To Find And Keep Top Construction Employees
This Podcast Is Episode Number 0350, And It's About How To Find And Keep Top Construction Employees
We all know the usual process of finding new employees. Advertise a job,  read resumes, conduct a telephone interview, conduct a face-to-face interview, then choose someone. The steps to recruiting new talent have been the same for decades, leaving many construction business owners to think these are the only way to find new employees.
There are many top-notch employees that you might not find if you don't change your strategy, however, these days there are many new and exciting ways to connect with possible staff and attract qualified employees to your business. All you have to do is be willing to be creative in your thinking.
Get your current employees on it
Besides you, who knows better what you need in an employee than your current employees? Not only do they know what you need, but they can also vouch for the people they recommend. Using an employee referral program can save you the costs associated with advertising a position, undergoing extensive interviews, and then training and retraining employees who don't work out.
How does it work? Your employees recommend people for a job with your company, and if their recommendation is successful, they get a reward. This can be a cash bonus, a gift, additional days off work, or the opportunity to work from home for a few days.
Make sure the program's details are precise: does the referred employee have to be hired for the benefit to kick in, or do they have to work at your company for a specific period? Does the gift get more extravagant if they recommend more successful recruits?
Keep the rules simple and make sure all employees know about the program.
Turn to Social Media
Social media isn't just a great way to build your customer base; it's also a fantastic way to build interest in working for your company. Employees of all ages—but especially younger generations—use some form of social media to look for work. That could be LinkedIn, but it can also mean Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or a variety of other sites.
Even if someone who sees your post isn't interested, they may share it with their friends or followers, who will share it with theirs, vastly increasing your reach. Be sure you know who your target candidates are and what social media channels they use and tailor your ads or posts to them.
If you have the time to have a long-view of recruiting, start building your company's employment brand online early by releasing content that highlights your corporate culture. People may see those posts and come to you so you can develop your talent pool. At the very least, you'll already be on their radar when it comes time to hire.
Reach out to past candidates
Just because someone wasn't the best candidate for a job in the past doesn't mean they aren't now. There could have been many factors that resulted in that person not being the best fit at that time. Perhaps they've taken courses or developed their experience since you interviewed them.
When you interview people that you like, but they don't quite make the cut, keep their resume on file and consider reaching out to them when a position opens up. You never know when the time will be right for them.
In light of finding the right employee, make sure your company is also a good fit for job-lookers. One way of attracting and keeping top and able crew is creating personal development plans for your employees.
Hopefully, you have long - and short-term plans for your company, and you may even have a strategy for your development, but have you considered having a personal development plan (or individual development plan) for employees?
An employee's development plan is an action plan that focuses on helping staff improve their knowledge, capabilities, and skills in areas related to your business.
Creating such plans shows your staff you're invested in their future, which increases employee satisfaction. It helps them understand their role and gives them a framework for expanding their talents. It enables you to develop your staff, allowing you to promote from within and enabling your employees to grow with your construction company.
Here are some steps to take to write a personal development plan.
  1. Determine business and employee goals
The first step is to determine your company's goals and needs. Are you looking to expand locations soon? Add new products or services? Do you have senior employees who will be retiring soon? Once you know what your business needs, you can identify the skills, experience, and training that will support the people who will help you meet those requirements.
Then determine your employees' goals. Talk to them about the work they currently do and where they feel they could use training. Ask where they see themselves in your company in the future. Find out why they want to develop their skills. Their answers will help you determine how to put the plan into action.
When you assess employees, keep in mind that having the ambition or potential to move up in your business doesn't necessarily mean they're ready right now. They may require a few years of gradually expanding their role and skills, or they may be great at one job (say installation) but not at another (such as sales).
  2. Explore training and development options
Now you can look at training and development options for your employees. Consider what training will give them the skills they need to expand their talents while also weighing their learning styles. Not all employees learn well in a classroom setting - and not all have the time to devote to taking courses.
Explore other options, such as coaching and mentoring, special projects, networking groups, online training, and working with experts. Combining a few of these strategies will likely work well for your employees as they can learn new skills and see how those skills apply to their jobs.
  3. Write a development plan
Finally, you can write up the plan, including specific goals with deadlines and the steps to take to help your employees achieve their goals. Sit down with your employees to talk about the program over, so they know what the goals are and how acquiring new skills helps them and the construction company.
Ensure that each employee has the opportunity to apply their new skills on the job and get feedback about their progress. This will keep them engaged in the process and help them refine their abilities. Remember to review the plan periodically so you can measure their development and determine if the project should be revised.
  In conclusion
There are many things you can do that can be successful in finding the right employee for your business. As a bonus, some of these strategies won't necessarily cost you a lot of time or money and may get you highly qualified and loyal employees. Employee development plans are a great way to invest in your employees and help them acquire new skills that will help them in their careers. It also enables you to promote from within your construction company, saving you time and money in the long run.
