Duck Comic Reading Club Week 15: Paperinik New Adventures: Urk

So, a week late, but here it is, the review of Urk. To be honest, I'm a bit disappointed. PK was on fire, but this issue extinguish it.

The first thing I notice is that this particular issue has the ugliest art yet.

I don't know what they were looking for. If it was nightmare fuel, they got it.

The story was also not that great, and I may be a little to mean, but is hard to not be harsh with Urk, because we just had Trauma, and everything in that issue was top tier.

Anyway, there have been kidnappings in the city, and no one seems safe.

PK is on the case, but he's as lost as the rest of Duckburg. In the mean time, he beat the hell out of the Elvis gang. That was my problem with Trauma, because PK beat him. The meanest, strongest Evronian ever, and PK beat him.

How in the blue hell could anyone else be a treath for PK? Those ugly bastards, fourth rate mobsters, have no chance.

Back in the tower, one poor employee fall into his doom, but his partner save him with some impressive moves.

What's the deal with the long ass hair? Why is that the look everyone decided to go?

Uno and Donald were impressed with the guy, and investigated him. Turned out that he was using a fake identity, what immediately make him a suspect.

PK paid him a visit, and they have their first encounter.

Urk won the round. That's comic magic, PK beat Trauma, now Urk beat PK. Is my fault to ask for logic. I should have know that, if the story needs to PK to lose against Dr. Fossil, to say a name, he's going to lose to Dr. Fossil.

Anyway, Lyla found out that Urk may be a chrononaut, like Raider. She joined PK in the search for the big duck. After a brief fight, in were Lyla had a wall falling on her, we learnt that Urk is not a bad guy.

Urk then tells his story. He lived in a different dimension and his community came into contact with an alien race who shared their knowledge with them.

Everything was nice and sweet until the vikings invaded.

Yes, Columbus, the biggest genocide "the new world" has ever known. I'm sure you would have liked it

Anyway, remember Day of the Cold Sun? When Raider activated his machine, the after blast brought Urk to PK's dimension. It also brought the vikings bio weapon, the creature.

PK and Urk join forces to defeat the beast.

The creature was the one who kidnapped all the people, to use them as lunch.

I get why they tried to do, going for an abstract form, but it didn't work. The creature is just a doodle.

PK shoot the creature, killing it.

The good guys win, and Urk now has to live in Duckburg.

This one goes into the I didn't like it basket.

We had some really good issues lately, in this one wasn't on their level, at all.

Ok I finished the... thing.

Listen, I know it's an adaptation, it's not suppose to be a transcription of the book (although they always say it will be). But there are huge problems.

I would say the one that shocked me the most is with women. Strong women. The reason reading the witcher was that fun and so inspiring. Here, these strong women are always dominated by a man. Geralt interrupts Yen, Dijsktra interrupts Philippa, Gallatin interrupts Francesca. There is always something like that (Radovid calling Philippa with sweet nickname like a boss of a fucking company with her secretary). I'm not dumb, I understand it's to show how women are treated badly in this terrible world and to justify the creation of the lodge. But the truth is, it's the case for random women not sorceresses. Sorceresses are the bosses of this fucking Continent. So why making them that weak? I remember reading about how they made kings shiver just by speaking, how they rule the country. And now you see a poor Philippa, at the corner of the table, who needs to whip Dijkstra to have power/a favor ? Philippa just have to glance at him and Dijkstra is on his knees. I swear this made me scream/laugh so hard.

This is for me the biggest issue. Of course there are many more: Cahir killing his friend and getting further and further of Book Cahir, Tissaia x Vilgefortz which makes Tissaia the exact opposite of her character, Margarita Laux-Antille A.K.A the sweetest sorceress slapping Ciri and being a bitch, Radovid being not Radovid (just call him another name please), Redania being isolated from the other countries for no reasons, Stregobor. Just Stregobor. And his Silent Hill monsters.

I watched the show with my polish friend and she was just sad seeing how it messed up with the book/the polish culture it is supposed to adapt.

I'm worried for part 2 but I will watch. Why ? I want to know how badly they mess with my favorite characters honestly. (Waiting for Tissaia and Philippa moments)

This is just my opinion by the way. If you enjoyed the show I'm glad you had a great time !

ALSO. I am watching the scene where Akira, Yusuke, and Makoto visit her room, and Morgana CLEARLY says ‘Makoto looks overwhelmed…’ when Futaba deflects her careful scripts. Shes flustered 😭 shes trying ! And shes uncomfortable bc shes out of her element.

(Futaba asks to wear the huge helmet the next day and Makoto literally stutters over suggesting the opposite. Its weird! Its not normal! Its not what shes used to! She doesnt have a script to deal w that. And she doesnt have a script to tell her how to deal w people who will inevitably be drawn to the attention. But she will learn! Just like the rest of the team will!)

Duck Comic Reading Club Week 23: Paperinik New Adventures: Absolute Zero

This week review is on time. What a novelty. Have to say, when I found Urk was on this one, I got a bit scared, but it was actually a good one. Let's check it out.

We're in the space, the final frontier. A couple of astronauts are having a regular day (as regular as a day in deep space can be) when their computer alert them about a big anomaly.

I love all the spaceships this comic gives me.

The astronauts enter the ship, and I wonder if they ever watched Alien, because they were ambushed by something inside the abandoned ship.

This comic starts big.

Meanwhile on Earth...

Uno is telling the news about the missing astronauts, and PK has to prepare a team to save them; the first reclute is no other tham Urk.

The big duck is having a friendly chat with some extortionists, and here I want to do a pause. The amount of crime in Duckburg is ridiculous.

Ignore the space pirates and evil aliens, there are theme gangs, high-profile thieves, extortionist and what more. I get that PK has to fight someone, but damn, this place needs mayor Owlson.

Anyway, Urk beat most of those punks, and good old PK took care of the biggest. PK ask for Urk help, and he accepted.

That was funny.

One more duck joins the mission.

I would double check is really her. We had a lot of cases when Lyla is not really her.

Lyla presence triggers Urk's flashbacks, I think that's the best part of this issue. Looks like Urk was about to be granted the Champion Cup, but a lady warrior challenged him.

Back to the present, the group arrives to their destination, and whatever is in there knows it.

The look of the ship is amazing.

The team gear up, and Urk can't stop looking at Lyla. Who could blame him? Once again, the Lyla's aura reminds the warrior about that woman who face him.

But enough with the flashbacks, is time to work.

This is the good stuff.

Well, I get that a comic has a limited space to tell its story, so, I won't complain that there wasn't at least one more page of the group going through the ship.

What I'll complain is, why is the monster in the cover?

The design and its entrance, it was perfect. But the freakin robot is in the cover man, how many times are you gonna keep doing this?

PK excels in action, but it doesn't know how to work mystery.

Talking about action, the fight against the robot is great, full of chaos and destruction. That's why I'm here, and PK knows it.

After destroying the floor where they fight, the group escape to plan a new strategy. The found the computer and learned the truth, this was a Xerbian ship that was intercepted by the Evronians.

Anyway, time to round 2.

I love how they described what fear means to each of them.

After a fierce battle, PK traps the robot in a force field. Before leave, Lyla hack in the computer. And we have one more flashback.

Urk and Lyla went to rescue the astronauts, while PK went to destroy the ship antenna, that antenna was cutting the communication with Uno. And the timing was perfect, because the robot was about the beat PK into oblivion, but Uno burn it to a crisp.

Thanks to Lyla, we found out the robot was the security system of the ship. It didn't do a great job, have to say. The astronauts were saved and PK and Lyla celebrated.

But Urk is having one last flashback.

The lady warrior let Urk defeat her, in order to assure his future leadership. Urk bows to the strongest warrior. If you tell me that lady is going to become his wife, I would believe you. It has that vibe.

We end this issue with a strong and sad line.

Oh man, that hits.

Goddamn PK, you can't make me feel things for Urk. But that's exactly what he did. I didn't care about the guy, but those flashback were perfect to create sympathy; now I know who he was before, what he was destiny to, and who was by his side. And that last line was so powerful. It really makes you feel sorry for him.

Good work Urk.
