Navigating the Digital Frontier: Protecting Yourself from UPI Scams
As we increasingly embrace the convenience of digital transactions, the prevalence of UPI (Unified Payments Interface) scams has risen as well. UPI, a revolutionary system that enables instant money transfers between banks through mobile devices, has become a target for fraudsters looking to exploit unsuspecting users.
While UPI technology has revolutionized the way we conduct financial transactions, it’s essential to remain attentive in the face of evolving scam tactics. By adopting a proactive approach, staying informed, and following the recommended safety measures, you can protect yourself from falling victim to UPI scams.
Check out these details to understand the common tactics used by scammers and crucial tips to ensure safety.
Understanding UPI Scams
Tumblr media
1. Phishing Attacks
One of the most common tactics used by fraudsters is phishing. In a UPI phishing scam, users receive fake messages or emails that appear to be from their bank or a trusted service provider. These messages often contain malicious links that, when clicked, lead to fraudulent websites designed to capture sensitive information such as login credentials or OTPs (One-Time Passwords).

July 24 (UPI) -- Meta said Wednesday it removed tens of thousands accounts based in Nigeria in a crackdown on sextortion schemes stemming from the country.
The company said it took down 63,000 Instagram accounts in Nigeria, including a smaller coordinated network of roughly 2,500 accounts linked to 20 people.
"Financial sextortion is a horrific crime that can have devastating consequences. Our teams have deep experience in fighting this crime and work closely with experts to recognize the tactics scammers use, understand how they evolve and develop effective ways to help stop them," Meta said.
Meta also removed Facebook accounts, Pages and Groups it said were run by Yahoo Boys, a loosely organized group of cybercriminals operating largely out of Nigeria. Those accounts are banned under Meta's Dangerous Organizations and Individuals policy.
According to Meta those accounts were trying to "organize, recruit and train new scammers."
The removed Nigerian Instagram accounts targeted primarily adult men in the United States. Those accounts were identified using new technical signals Meta has developed to spot accounts engaging in sextortion.
Meta also removed approximately 7,200 Facebook assets, including 1,300 accounts, 200 Facebook pages and 5,700 Facebook Groups based in Nigeria that were allegedly providing tips for how to conduct sextortion scams.
"While these investigations and disruptions are critical, they're just one part of our approach," Meta's statement said. "We continue to support law enforcement in investigating and prosecuting these crimes, including by responding to valid legal requests for information and by alerting them when we become aware of someone at risk of imminent harm, in accordance with our terms of service and applicable law."
In April, two people in Nigeria were arrested and charged in the sexual extortion case of an Australian teen who died by suicide.
The boy took his own life after threats that intimate pictures he shared online with someone he thought was a female would be sent to family and friends.
The term sextortion refers to the act of getting victims to create and send sexually explicit material, then demanding money for not releasing that material.
Also in April, Meta tested new features to fight sextortion by automatically blurring nude images in Instagram by default on accounts for users younger than 18.
Meta said then that it had spent years working closely with experts to understand how scammers use sextortion to find and extort victims online.

Mahadev Online Betting Scam: Bollywood Celebrities and Pakistani Connections Under Scrutiny
Tumblr media
MUMBAI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has initiated an extensive investigation into the Mahadev Online Betting scandal, revealing a complex network of money laundering activities that extend far beyond the realm of online betting. This case has taken an intriguing turn, with the involvement of UPI IDs, implicating well-known personalities, celebrities, and even political contributions.
The Mahadev Online Betting Scandal: A Brief Overview The spotlight has turned to Mahadev, an online betting application, founded by Saurabh Chandrakar and Ravi Uppal hailing from Bhilai, Chattisgarh. The ED has cast a sharp eye on this platform, alleging that it served as a hub for illicit betting websites. It facilitated new user registrations, generated User IDs, and funneled funds through a convoluted network of anonymous bank accounts.
Also Read: Kashmiri Brother-in-Law could not show Kamal, and pressure on Nagpur police failed
Extensive Raids and Compelling Evidence In a recent series of coordinated raids conducted in cities like Kolkata, Bhopal, and Mumbai, the ED has unearthed substantial evidence and frozen/seized assets totaling an astounding Rs 417 Crore. According to the ED, Chandrakar and Uppal orchestrated the operations of Mahadev Online Betting from a central headquarters located in the UAE. They employed a franchising model, establishing "Panel/Branches" for their associates, with profit-sharing arrangements set at a 70:30 ratio.
A deeply troubling aspect of this scandal revolves around the exploitation of vulnerable communities, specifically slum residents and those with limited incomes. It appears that individuals implicated in this alleged scam acquired UPI (Unified Payments Interface) details from these unsuspecting individuals, effectively using them as pawns in money laundering schemes. In return for the use of their UPI IDs, these victims were given meager sums, while the ill-gotten funds were channeled to foreign entities. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is currently conducting a thorough investigation to determine the full scope of this fraudulent activity and quantify the amount of money that has been laundered through this deceptive modus operandi.
Lavish Wedding Expenditure Raises Concerns
Recent ED raids conducted in Bhopal, Mumbai, and Kolkata have brought to light the extravagant lifestyle of the primary accused, Saurabh Chandrakar. Astonishingly, it was revealed that he lavishly spent over Rs 200 crore on his wedding ceremony in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Shockingly, reports suggest that the funds for this opulent celebration were sourced from the proceeds of criminal activities.
Private jets were chartered to transport family members from Nagpur to the UAE for the wedding festivities, and renowned celebrities were hired for special performances. An array of wedding planners, dancers, and decorators were flown in from Mumbai, with cash payments facilitated through clandestine hawala channels.

Celebrity Involvement and Suspicions of Proceeds from Illegal Activities
The ED's ongoing investigation has also implicated several prominent celebrities who endorsed these betting entities. These celebrities not only lent their names to these platforms but also participated in various events organized by the app promoters and other individuals accused in this case. Payments to these celebrities were routed through intricate transactions, ultimately sourced from the proceeds of online betting activities.
The list of celebrities under scrutiny includes well-known figures such as singers Atif Aslam, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Neha Kakkar, Vishal Dadlani, actor Tiger Shroff, Elli Evram, Bhagyashree, Pulkit Samrat, Sunny Leone, Kirti Kharbanda, Nushrat Bharucha, and comedians Bharti Singh, Krishna Abhishek, and Ali Azgar.
In conclusion, this disturbing scandal not only highlights the exploitation of vulnerable populations but also shines a light on the extravagant spending habits of key individuals involved. The web of celebrity endorsements and the suspected use of proceeds from illegal activities underscore the need for a thorough investigation into the matter, ensuring that justice is served and accountability upheld.

Cyber Crime Complaint Kaise Kare
Tumblr media
Friends, if any online financial fraud or scam has happened to you, even if you are new to the channel like UPI App, then do not forget to subscribe. So let us quickly understand the whole process step by step [Sangeet] So the first step is NCRP. That is, to complain in the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, because without this there is no use of the remaining four processes, so first of all you have to visit this official site, the link of which is given below in the description, click from there and open it. So to make an online complaint, go to the Cyber Crime Report option and click on Financial Fraud, then scroll down the screen, click on File a Complaint, after that click on Accept.
And if you are complaining here for the first time, then first you will have to register here, for which you will click on Click Here for New User, then here you have to enter your details like select the state from which you are, then here you You will enter your email ID, then below you have to enter your mobile number and click on Get OTP. Now an OTP will come on this number, type it here and then enter the captcha code as written here and click on submit. Then in the next page you have to enter your personal details, like whatever you use in front of your name in the title, like Mr. Mrs. Doctor, Mr. Mrs., you have to tick it here, then below you have to write your full name.
Also Read- binance trading se bank account kese unfreeze karaye
And here your mobile number which you had just verified will come automatically. Then below you have to select your date of birth and gender and here you have to enter your email ID. Keep in mind that the mobile number and email ID you have given will be sent to all communication messages. It will be sent to you here, like your complaint number and whatever status of the complaint will be updated here, then here you have to select your father, mother, spouse, any one relation and write its name, after that at the bottom, at the end, you will get your Present address has to be mentioned wherever you live and here you will select the district, then below you have to select the police station near you, then click on Save and Continue here. Now you have to tell some things related to your complaint here. have to tell
So here you have to understand every option carefully because the information on this page is the most important, in which first of all you have to select the category of complaint, that is, how has fraud happened with you, like if someone has cheated on the social media platform, select the second option. Similarly, if someone has hacked your computer or laptop or there is cyber trafficking or fraud from online gambling or betting site, then select this option according to whatever incident has happened to you. After this, see its sub category below. Have to select, like above I had selected online financial fraud, then here I have to tell how online fraud happened to me like Aadhaar Enabled Payment System Fraud, if someone stole your Aadhaar details like fingerprint information and money from the bank account. If you want to remove, select this option
Also Read- Bank Account Freeze Ho Jaye To Kya kare
And if the fraud has happened by sending an email, then you will select this option and if someone has committed a fraud of money because of your credit card, debit card or phone SIM, then you will select this option, similarly if through demat account or e-wallet. Which is also called digital wallet or whether someone has committed fraud by calling or through internet banking or like UPI app. Select the name of the bank from which your money has been deducted and below select the UPI app which you used. If it was like amazonbusiness.in then you can enter it or leave it blank, then if you click on save here then all the details will appear in the table here and if money has been debited more than once then fill each and every detail in the same manner. If you click on save, all the transactions will appear here, now here under the suspect account details who has defrauded you.
If you have his account details then you can add it here by saying yes and if not then select no. Then after this here you have to tell the date and time of that incident. If you do not remember exactly then you can also fill it with idea. But it is necessary to fill it so that whatever money has been transferred can be tracked. Now here, if you have filed a complaint of fraud late then select Yes, otherwise select No. Then below you have to tell where online fraud has happened with you. For example, if someone has committed fraud through email, then the email ID of the scammer will have to be given below and if facebooksignup.in can tell how this fraud happened.
So that whatever happens, the investigation officer can understand it well and take the right action and then click on Save as Draft and Next. Now on the next page you have to fill the suspect details. If any details of whoever has cheated you are there. If you have it then you can mention it here and if not then leave it blank and click on Save Draft and Next below. Now in the next page the complaint details i.e. your personal details will appear like your name, mobile number, address which you have registered. While doing this, if you want to change anything, you can do so. Last, you have to select the relationship with the victim, meaning whether you are making this complaint for yourself or for someone else like father, mother, sister, neighbor or friend. so it has to be told here
Also Read- bank account freeze
And that person will have to upload any one ID proof here and then click on Save and Preview here and check all the details carefully here. If you want to change anything then you can do so and if If all the details are correct with you then you have to tick the box of 'Agree' and click on 'Confirm and Submit' after which your complaint will be registered on the cyber portal whose tracking number will be sent to your mobile number and email ID and as soon as Any investment officer will also get appointments for your complaint through message and email and in future, if you want to check the status of your complaint, then you can go to check status above here. Now friends, after this complaint, your main work will be done. It starts here, most of the people do not follow the further process after complaining, due to which most of the people do not get their money back, so now carefully understand the further steps. After the cyber cell complaint, in the next step you will get the number of this complaint or its You have to go to your bank manager with the copy.
And you have to tell about this fraud so that the bank manager can immediately register your complaint and send it forward. According to the RBI guidelines, you have to report to the bank within 3 days but you should not wait at all because if the scammer withdraws all the money from your account. If you withdraw even Rs, you may not get a refund but remember friends, you must take receipt from the bank. If the bank manager does not give any receipt, then you have to send this complaint to the customer support of the bank through email and whatever you You will send an email or you will receive a reply from the bank, keep it safely as it will be useful to you in the future, about which I am going to tell you further. Then in the third step, you have to go to the customer support of that UPI app and raise a complaint and if you want, you can also raise a complaint through cyber You can send both the complaint and bank complaint proof by attaching them.
And in the fourth step, you have to complain to NPCI. This is for those people with whom online fraud has happened through UPI app like google-api-python-client. If you do not get any solution in 30 days or you are not satisfied with the solution of the bank. You have to complain against the bank in RBI. To understand the entire process of RBI complaint, watch this video by clicking on the button above and follow the steps and here all the proofs like copy of the bank complaint which must include the date and time of complaint. There should also be bank statement and whatever can prove that you informed the bank on time but still the bank did not take any action, then RBI will help you in whatever liability of the bank will arise. Friends, if you follow all these steps. So your chances of getting money increase manifold.

July 16 (UPI) -- In a continued crackdown on Mexico's drug cartels, the Treasury Department announced Tuesday it placed sanctions on four Mexican companies and three Mexican nationals allegedly tied to fraudulent timeshare activity used against American citizens and linked to the notorious Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generacion.
"Cartel fraudsters run sophisticated teams of professionals who seem perfectly normal on paper or on the phone -- but in reality, they're money launderers expertly trained in scamming U.S. citizens," Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian E. Nelson said Tuesday in a news release.
The department's office of Foreign Assets Control alleges the four Mexican companies and three Mexican civilian accountants were directly or indirectly tied to timeshare fraud lead by the Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generacion, or styled in English as the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
The criminal organization operates call centers in Mexico with scammers impersonating U.S.-based third-party timeshare brokers, attorneys or sales representatives, the U.S. government contends.
And about 6,000 U.S. citizens reported losing nearly $300 million from 2019 to 2023 via Mexican timeshare fraud crimes by targeting American timeshare owners often in various or complex ways in years-long schemes, according to the FBI, adding that totals what they can track legally as unreported crimes keep on.
Treasury points at four companies in Mexico: Constructora Sandgris, Pacific Axis Real Estate, Realty & Maintenance BJ and Bona Fide Consultores, which the department claims were the front companies doing business on behalf of those linked to Mexican drug cartel.
Nelson says unsolicited calls and emails may look legitimate but actually are made by cartel-backed criminals.
The Treasury claims the thee Puerto Vallarta-based accountants -- Griselda Margarita Arredondo, Xeyda Del Refugio Foubert and Emiliano Sanchez -- had family ties to individuals already cartel-linked and had allegedly aided in fraudulent activities to steal from U.S. citizens.
"If something seems too good to be true, it probably is," Nelson said.
The scam begins when a timeshare owner receives an offer to purchase their property, according to an attorney.
"They call you up and tell you that they have a buyer for your timeshare," Michael Finn of Florida's Finn Law Group, told ABC News. "They will send you documents that look real and tell you that you need to pay taxes before you can get your payment."
The Treasury Department and its partners are taking steps to deploy all available tools "to disrupt this nefarious activity, which funds things like deadly drug trafficking and human smuggling," said Nelson.
Five years ago in 2018 Treasury sanctioned two men it claimed laundered money and ran an international prostitution ring for the cartel.
The transnational CJNG, a violent Jalisco, Mexico-based organized crime syndicate, is known to traffic the large part of illicit fentanyl and other deadly drugs which typically enter via the southern U.S. border, having gone so far as to threaten Mexican journalists it views as giving the CJNG "unfair" news coverage.
And it uses illegal proceeds, like from its timeshare fraud schemes, to diversify its already-illicit revenue streams in order to keep financing other criminal activities, including the manufacturing and trafficking of fentanyl and other synthetic drugs, according to the federal government's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network.
Police seizure of illicit fentanyl pills have skyrocketed in recent years, a new study found. And pills represented 49% of illicit fentanyl seizures in 2023, compared to 10% in 2017.
The U.S. Customs and Border Protection in April launched "Operation Plaza Strike" as an offensive targeting Mexican drug cartels to disrupt the flow of fentanyl and ingredients used to make the synthetic opioid that has become a leading death of young Americans.
However, this is not the first time the CJNG has been accused by the U.S. of similar crimes. Last year in March, the Biden Treasury placed similar sanction on eight other Mexican companies it alleged had took part in a similar timeshare fraud scheme on behalf of the Cartel de Jalisco Nueva Generation.
Even at the time a Treasury official pointed to how in select Mexican tourist destinations the CJNG had already become by that point "heavily engaged" in timeshare fraud in places like Puerto Vallarta where it had gained a strategic foothold.
Last year, the U.S. claimed the accused cartel-backed companies had extracted money from victims by making unsolicited offers to buy their timeshares, and when victims accepted offers, Mexican scammers requested fictitious fees and taxes under the pretense they would facilitate the sale and give reimbursed money after closing.

Beware of the part time job scam from fraudulent Whatsapp and telegram combined UPI payment and OTP scam. It could cost you lakhs freewarespaceAugust 4, 2023SECURITY In this earlier article, I elaborated clearly how can you will be cheated of lakhs by combining whatsapp and telegram scam and that article receives a grest boost and people like that article and that provides me of immense pleasure to write down another similar scam but this time they are not doing through internet banking methods but they do through UPI payments and OTP frauds.
This scam consists of two phases and I will, be posting both whatsapp and telegram conversations in order to warn the readers to know about this scam and should not just flow with the tide and should be alerted about this. First in the following I will be providing details of Whatsapp conversations and just try to understand how these scamsters work. At first they provide the 3 task and here task means they will provide the link of a website and you just to browse the website and then take the screenshot of it as the prove of visiting the website and then send to them and they call these as tasks and they say that they will provide us with three tasks and the exact conversations with them I provided below to alert users about this..
They said that they will pay rs 114 for three tasks and in the beginning there will be no mention of telegram use as they will convince you to work through Whatsapp. They will provide you Task 1 and Task 2 in whatsapp and then for the Task-3 they will provide you with one username opf Telegram and ask you whether you have telegram username and if you provide that then they will provide you with a username to follow and alsdo ask you ti send the screenshot of joining that telegram number. As you will have to in order to complete task 3 and the lure of getting rs 114 for three task completed. So, for this fraudster compel you to move to Telegram from Whatsapp.
Better be safe than sorry:
In order to transfer money from you to them this time they will provide you one UPI id such as here they provide  increase amount such as if you gave them rs 1111 to them through UPI payment they they say that they will provide you with rs 1444 and which is false and do not become rey to their tactics and stay out of these traps by these fraudsters and if you go through all of these Whatsapp and Telegram conversation then you will know how these fraudsters work and tricks as they bring you from Whatsapp to Telegram so that they can hide their identities. It is important to learn the way fraudsters work and do not fall prey as once you give them money then all of a sudden everything will be depeted and you will not find any trace of their presence as their all the profiles and whatsapp will be deleted forever and you could lose all of yours money forever so it is important to be better safe than sorry and be alert.
Whatsapp Conversations:
In my whatsapp, I received suddenly one message from this phone number 76360 58252
~Meher Ali and the message was ‘What are you doing’ .
I replied back as “Am fine”
After responding to this the next messages are as follows:

[10:50, 29/07/2023] +91 76360 58252: Are you interested to do this job?

Gurgaon Police Crack Down on Electricity Bill Scam: Four Arrested in Rs 1 Lakh Fraud
Tumblr media
In a recent breakthrough, Gurgaon police successfully apprehended four suspects involved in a sophisticated electricity bill scam that swindled a woman out of Rs 1 lakh. The incident came to light when the victim reported an unauthorized withdrawal from her bank account after attempting to clear her electricity bill.
Complaint and Police Response:
On June 3, the victim filed a complaint at the Sector 14 police station, prompting an immediate response from the Gurgaon police. The unauthorized withdrawal triggered a thorough investigation, leading to the registration of a case under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.

Modus Operandi Revealed:
The investigation unveiled a cunning modus operandi orchestrated by a suspect named Ajay and his associates. The scammers sent threatening messages, claiming that failure to settle electricity bills would result in disconnection. Subsequently, they sent payment links to the victims. Once clicked, the perpetrators hacked into bank accounts, siphoning off money.
Arrests and Suspects' Identities:
A specialized police team, led by Assistant Commissioner of Police Vipin Ahlawat, successfully apprehended the suspects in Palam Vihar. The arrested individuals include Pankaj and Mangilal from Munasri Hanuman Garh, Rajasthan, Sombeer from Gadhi village, Hisar district, and Ajay from Niwana village, Hisar.

Transaction Details Unveiled:
During the interrogation, it was revealed that the defrauded amount was transferred to Pankaj's bank account, then sent to Mangilal. Sombeer, employed at a petrol pump, received the money, charging a 1.5% commission, before forwarding the remaining sum to Ajay. The investigation is ongoing to delve into the full extent of the allegations.
Insight into Cyber Criminal Techniques:
Sub-Inspector Sachin Kumar from the Cyber West police station highlighted the evolving complexities of cybercrime. He emphasized that some cybercriminals masquerade as customer care representatives or electricity department employees to gain trust and deceive victims. Kumar explained how unsuspecting individuals are coerced into clicking on links, leading to the download of screen-sharing apps and subsequently leaking UPI IDs during payment transactions.
Police Advisory and Vigilance:
In light of this incident, the police are actively urging citizens to remain vigilant against fraudulent tactics employed by cybercriminals. They emphasize the importance of reporting any suspicious activities to prevent falling victim to cyber scams.

I got a call today from some random guy. He spoke Hindi in a village accent. He mentioned my UPI. I felt weary that even on festival days scammers do not give it a rest. He told me that...my father...had asked him...to tell me...to send across money. I tried to decide if I should be pissed off or feel pity for the motherfucker for coming up with such a poorly thought out scam. It was clear to me that the real crime here was stupidity. This is why you should eat your vegetables and stay in school. I decided to let him walk deeper into it by asking him exactly what my father had said. He obliged and said my father had asked me to send him 15k by UPI. I asked him when my dad had told him to do this? He said a few days ago. I told him my father had passed away last May. The moron cut the call. I finished cleaning up my room.
