It's pretty weird that the goyische conservatives who have used "antisemitism" as a weapon against brown people have been reaaaaaal quiet when a Jewish Democratic Governor's residence was firebombed on the first night of Passover by a white guy.
And by weird I mean totally predictable.

ranting for a bit because the entire scene where elphaba tells glinda her secret makes me go rabid and actually makes me want to chew concrete because not only is it actually absolutely heartbreaking to see just how deeply elphaba believes all the horrible things her father reinforces; how she thinks she's responsible for her mother's death and is the reason for nessarose's disability even when it's literally not her fault in any way and is actually DIRECTLY her father's fault.
and just the fact that elphaba tells glinda all this and tells glinda her father hates her and that everything's her fault and glinda looks at her and she's absolutely heartbroken to hear elphaba saying all these things and she becomes the first person in elphaba's life to look her in the eyes and tell her that none of that is true and that it is NOT her fault, it was NEVER her fault despite whatever anyone said.
ik a lot of ppl see glinda's "it was the milkflower's fault" line as a very sort of shallow take by glinda (I'm explaining it poorly but ik some ppl wonder why she didn't just call out governor thropp directly) but I've got to disagree with that take because personally I think glinda heard elphaba talking, heard her describe her secret and heard how her father forced her mother to chew milkflowers constantly during her pregnancy all because he was afraid the baby would come out green like elphaba and she heard all this and she hears how elphaba thinks this is all her fault.
and yk they're roommates. glinda sees the way elphaba talks about her father and how even though she says that he hates her in an almost casual manner despite how she says he's justified for hating her, elphaba still loves her father and she still wants to do right by him and she still wants him to love her.
so glinda knows that elphaba will not listen to her if she straight up tells her that her father's fucking mental and completely wrong and that it was all his fault and that she's probably going to bludgeon him to death. she knows that elphaba will never accept this and she knows that right now it won't do any good for anyone.
so instead she tells elphaba it was the milkflower's fault. and she looks her in the eyes and she tells her this was never your fault you shouldn't think this was ever your fault and anyone who ever told you that it was your fault was completely and totally wrong and I need you to know this.
because the primary concern isn't about telling elphaba she's got a shitty dad the primary concern is telling elphaba that it is not her fault for simply existing. and to let her know that there is nothing wrong with her and that there is someone here, right now, who loves and cares for her so so much and wants her to know that. that there is someone who will hold her hand and who will tell her that they are there for her and that she is fine the way she is. that she is loved.

so murderbot assumes that three offered its armor because it doesn't understand that the armor can belong to it and thinks mb taking the armor is just good resource allocation.
but if it assumes it doesnt have control over the armor, it would probably let whoever it sees as in charge (maybe ART?) handle it, or at least make the suggestion directly to that person. even newly freed in NE, it's willing to give its security advice (on hostage situations being undesirable) even if it doesn't expect to be taken seriously. it doesn't make sense to me that it would have so much trouble expressing the offer if it were just a security suggestion.
and then i think about how murderbot says later in the book that even if three felt fondly toward its fellow SecUnits, the govmod would prevent it from expressing that care or knowing it was returned.
so-- imagine you're three, and you havent yet internalized that you can just say "i care about you and dont want you to get hurt" to another SecUnit; but you can make sure that it has every resource it might need; you could probably do that even before the govmod was hacked.
you can't explain why, but you can hope that the gesture is explanation enough, and you can look for similar caretaking gestures in return; things like being given code and advice to do your job better, and being reassured when you express that you're finding said job difficult.
i think *murderbot* isn't aware of this language of care, because it hasnt had much opportunity to bond with other constructs. but three probably is, and probably knows how to read between the lines and guess that murderbot is starting to care about it, too.

"Do you know where we are going next?" I asked ART.
Y'know what, I think maybe I don't need any more Murderbot books. I think maybe ending things here is fucking perfect and as much as I love Wells's writing I'm genuinely not sure it can get better for me.
Like, so much of the books are about MB learning how to be a person, about becoming okay with being a complete individual with everything it entails. The first thing it does once it's actually allowed to decide on its own is it runs away from it all (admittedly to go on a mission to confirm some things about its past, because it genuinely just wants to be *good*). It shoves all its emotions away as much as it's able to. Then shit happens, and it makes its first friends, makes decisions based on these friendships, goes through a lot of emotionally intense situations...
And we get to this point here. MB having zero doubts about going with ART says a lot about its relationship with ART, but it also says a lot about its relationship with its humans - it knows that wherever it goes, when it comes back, the humans will still be there. Its humans actively acknowledge its struggles with being a now-free SecUnit and MB is willing to entertain the discussions to an extent and share information about its deeply personal experiences. Hell, System Collapse ends with MB admitting it might be somewhat broken, but that's okay as long as it can keep doing its job, and agreeing to basically do counselling - this is the guy what would rewatch its favourite TV show again and again in order to avoid acknowledging it even had Emotions a couple books back.
Reading this, I know that MB will be okay. It has hopes and goals and genuinely believes in itself and it has an amazing support system that its willing to lean on for the first time in its life. I'm convinced it'll go on to do great things with ART. And that's really the only thing I need to know.
#Murderbot#murderbot diaries#tmbd#system collapse#Herr's personal tag#Also like. System collapse dives deep into MB's feelings about its life as secunit prior to the events of all systems red#I find this conversation from when they were discussing what would happen if the BE folks got to the colonists first /very/ telling#MB going on about how life as a corporate slave is absolute fucking hell#ART drone saying that they can't just kill people because the alternative is worse than death#ART: would it have been kinder to kill you before you'd disabled your governor module?#MB with zero fucking hesitation: /yes/#(followed by my favourite ART line ever. тАЬYou know I am not kind.тАЭ)#Like. MB would not have always admitted that it had hated its life as a secunit this openly#Saying it was shit is one thing saying I would rather be dead than think of me or anyone else going through this again is a very different#And here it has zero issues stating that. At least when talking to ART#And then later on it goes on to offer its actual memories for a publicly screened documentary#Because it knows it's the only way to make people see. The only way to save then from the same (ish) fate#And it's willing to do whatever it takes to save these people it's never even met before from what it views as fate worse than death#Including opening up and acknowledging its past experiences and past/current feelings#And I'm just like. Man I couldn't be more proud of you if I tried.#You go MB. Holy fuck I wish I could do what you've done. You might just be the person to defeat this evil capitalism my dude

@muses-inn asked: [ЁЯТ╜]┬а There is only so much a SecUnit inside its transporter box can do when the company transporter's system suddenly suffers a critical failure during its landing maneuvers. The ship just came down like a meteorite instead. It is nothing close of a wonder that Murderbot didn't just perish like its unfortunate clients and their other equipment. Maybe it is thanks to having been inside its sturdy transport box. Its right leg hurts. Well, there are many other parts that hurt too, and it is leaking blood and fluids out of several places. Not good. It returns its full, slightly buzzing attention back to the human who witnessed the ship's crash, apparently. But is that horrified look on her face because of this situation or because of being in front of a SecUnit? It can't tell. Human expressions are a pain to read. - imminent critical failure - Uh Oh. Murderbot hates the prospect of being this vulnerable, confused and distressed right now. The fact that a part of its helmet is broken and half of its face is revealed doesn't help. At all. But it also struggles to maintain itself and to prevent a critical failure from happening. Shelter and recovery sounds better to it right now than having a critical failure out here. No, actually the prospect of both is terrifying, but... "I... need a place to recover." (For Emil's general Sci-Fi AU? I hope it works if I bring Murderbot just to her. I had to take a bit of a swing on this so it got a little lengthy ^^")
Where did bot-human constructs recover? A Med Bay? A workshop? Emil could probably tinker on it and figure its electronics out, but the organics would have died before she was even halfway done.
Med Bay it was then, and hoping for the best.
Sitting in a corner, while Caramel's Med Systems worked on the construct firmly strapped to the operating table - its armour taken off and discarded in another corner - Emil frowned more and more at the visuals from her scouting drones zipping all over the crash site.
She didn't know all that much about security constructs, but weren't they on a 'leash' so to speak? Unable to move outside of some pre-programmed range from their clients?
Emil had moved Caramel closer to the crash site to make sure it wouldn't get its systems fried while she tried to save it, but all the humans her drones could locate were dead.
Weren't they supposed to fry when their contractors died too? Was Emil's info wrong? Was there some survivor still buried in the rubble?
B-0R was there too - her quadruped, dog-shaped, but horse-sized bot with far more sensors than Emil's scouting drones - but he couldn't locate anyone alive either while going through the ship logs to find out what had happened.
How peculiar.
"Welcome back to the land of the living," she announced, when eventually the Med System picked on signs of it restarting. She sent one of her drones to hover over it, sending a view of its face, while she still sat sideways on the chair, legs dangling over the armrest with a pack of potato chips on her lap and the headset with a yellow eye shield covering half of her face.
"We have misery and suffering, but the food and entertainment aren't half as bad. Now-" she crunched a potato chip, sending the Med Bay a ping to further strengthen its firewalls and ready a drill to possibly staple it in place- "why did the ship crash?"
For all Emil knew, it could be this very construct's doing.

Also for what it's worth I've never discouraged the creation of a farther left party in the US either. I believe I've even said in the past that the Green Party is a disaster and if you want to build an alternative party you have to do it from the ground up. I have no illusions about a farther left party gaining any kind of traction at the national level, but local politics is a lot more flexible.
The only viable role for a leftist party in the US right now is a local/state party in deep blue states that would have candidates run as Democrats if they ran for federal office. Democrats will have different opinions on that which is fine, personally I'm chill with that as long as they treat Democrats as respected coalition partners and aren't assholes about it. I think that's kind of what the DSA was supposed to be? It feels like every attempt at this dissolves into an internal mess because *jazz hands* the American left but it doesn't have to be that way.
I'm not going to personally put the effort in to do this, I'm fine voting for Democrats, but if I had a choice between a Democrat and some leftist party for a local office I'd consider both candidates. That's basically what I do now anyway except they're all officially Democrats and I do it in the primaries.

"Pryce betrayed her friends to gain a governorship"
No, she turned them in to the ISB to gain protection from colonel Yularen, so she could avoid getting imprisoned alongside the people who used her as a tool to commit a crime without her knowledge, but being opportunistic, she also found a way how to turn the situation they got her into to her own advantage.
Do you know that?
It's important to me that you know that.
