Started writing this in response to a post in the Murderbot tag and then realized that it was really its own post:
I think that Mensah’s “I think you can learn to do anything you want,” in the first book and Art’s “You dislike your function. How is that possible?” from the second are descriptions of two ways of being: human, infinite possibilities and no “purpose” but to exist; and bot, form follows function and identity follows form. MB is always saying that gunships “want” to shoot things simply because they have guns - you can to an extent pre-determine even a high level bot’s personality and priorities based on what you build it to be able to do. Whereas humans can drop out of Oxford to form the band Queen and then go back decades later to finish their thesis in Astrophysics because we don’t have “functions” except those we choose for ourselves, and we can always change those.
MB’s character arc over the whole series really but especially the All Systems Read-Exit Strategy story arc is figuring out that these are actually two ends of a spectrum that, as a construct, it is somewhere in the middle of - it’s not so defined by its function that it can’t have independent opinions and unhappiness about what it was built to do, but you can’t separate the person from what it was built for in the way that a human can change a job.
The first four books’ arc is about it figuring this out and articulating it to itself - realizing that it wants to keep protecting humans from danger, but it wants to do that on its own terms with full autonomy over who it protects, and how, and when (and with what compensation). Every book since then has involved it negotiating and renegotiating what those terms are and where it wants to be on that spectrum.

Inadvisable framing device for a Disco Elysium style skill system #137: you're a robot and each of your components is both individually sapient and monomaniacally focused on solving problems using it, like your left arm thinks everything can be solved by doing left arm things.

oh murderbot's drones are insect-sized with wings to match? the "murderbot looks like it's surrounded by flies, cartoon-stinky-style" agenda has never been stronger

People in the CR: They're so creepy. You have to give them orders to use them right. If they weren't controlled by the governor module they'd go rogue and kill us all. Supporting bots rights makes you insane.
People on Preservation: Hey SecUnit how's it going

I have things to be proud of. Our family. The books and papers with my name on them. A farm that is thriving at least in some small part because of my contributions. Friends who smile when they see me. Ordinary things. Beautiful things.
A part of me, though, is keenly aware of all the dreams I never chased.
My submission for the Reverse Big Bang!! This is the accompanying art to Meaning by krawrites (with a podfic by AnneException)

I think my favorite part of the new short story is that we've had several instances between artificial condition and network effect where MBs been like "ART would be good at this." "I wish ART was here" and seeing ART do virtually the same thing with learning how to hack secsystems and wanting intel drones and developing subtle deflection materials. I SO think its probably thinking "MB is so good at hacking. It would want more drones if I ever met it again. I wonder if I can make armor for it that won't get it clocked as a secunit"

REELING from the new murderbot short story. Instead of poor helpless Secunit (with big shoujo anime eyes) getting wallpinned by the big mean transport it was your respectable smart straight-A transport daughter getting hopelessly smitten with a gun-toting, intelligence-drone-using, leather deflection-jacket-wearing Bad Boy rogue Secunit. called Murderbot
