Gurathin's "bewildered, trusting, naive socialist friends" include Madame President of the Planet and her high-powered CombatUnit-grade human rights lawyer, but go on, tell us how much wiser the man is who rifled through a slave's brain to find it couldn't be controlled, and then taunted it with his supposed control over it, than the overly emotional socialist women around him.

Queer Adult SFF Books Bracket: Round 3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Book summaries and submitted endorsements below:
The Murderbot Diaries series (All Systems Red, Artificial Condition, Rogue Protocol, Exit Strategy, Network Effect, Fugitive Telemetry, System Collapse, and other stories) by Martha Wells
Endorsement from submitter: "Asexual and agender main character. In later books side characters are revealed to be in poly relationship."
"As a heartless killing machine, I was a complete failure."
In a corporate-dominated space-faring future, planetary missions must be approved and supplied by the Company. For their own safety, exploratory teams are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids. But in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder, safety isn’t a primary concern.
On a distant planet, a team of scientists is conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied ‘droid--a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module and refers to itself (though never out loud) as “Murderbot.” Scornful of humans, Murderbot wants is to be left alone long enough to figure out who it is, but when a neighboring mission goes dark, it's up to the scientists and Murderbot to get to the truth.
Science fiction, novella, series, adult
The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin (Hainish Cycle series)
A groundbreaking work of science fiction, The Left Hand of Darkness tells the story of a lone human emissary to Winter, an alien world whose inhabitants spend most of their time without a gender. His goal is to facilitate Winter's inclusion in a growing intergalactic civilization. But to do so he must bridge the gulf between his own views and those of the completely dissimilar culture that he encounters.
Embracing the aspects of psychology, society, and human emotion on an alien world, The Left Hand of Darkness stands as a landmark achievement in the annals of intellectual science fiction.
Science fiction, classics, speculative fiction, anthropological science fiction, distant future, adult

I hadn’t expected Balin to be able to smash through that window so fast but wow I was wrong. Falling with the shattered transparent material through the air wall and toward the transit ring floor, I jammed the projectile weapon right up against the undercarriage where Balin’s lower limbs connected and fired over and over again. Then we hit the floor.

One of my favorite things about Murderbot Diaries worldbuilding is the casual revelation that sometimes Dead Space happens.
It's only vaguely referenced in the background at first because it's not really relevant to what Murderbot has going on, until it becomes really relevant, and then it's like yeah sometimes you roll the dice and your bond company lands you on a planet with alien ruins and the remnants of that civilization contaminate you, change you physically, compel you to build strange architecture and attack non-contaminated humans, until eventually you die.
Like it's to the point where even most evil hypercapitalist corporate leaders agree not to fuck with alien tech because they don't want to get Dead Spaced. And it's... honestly kind of hilarious.

Making myself a couple of Murderbot bookmarks to print, so here's the first one - All Systems Red edition. The dimensions of this was going to look strange on tumblr, hence the lineart version as well.

[wheels out a messy conspiracy board] the pillars of being a himbo are being attractive, kind, and stupid. ratthi is often jokingly characterised as a himbo but he lacks the key trait of stupidity - he is naive sometimes, and his optimism and ability to see the best in people can be confused for stupidity, but he is not, actually, stupid. now gurathin, he is not conventionally stupid, but does display heightened dumbass tendencies in certain situations, such as thinking hubsystem was capable of immobilising murderbot in ASR (the same hubsystem thats supposed to be monitoring it? giving it punishments through its governor module? the hubsystem that should have told you your secunit was hacked from day 1? that hubsystem?).
therefore, i propose that part of what makes the Ratthi-Gurathin duo work so well is that together, they make One Whole Himbo. in this essay i will-
