Murderbot Discord Server - Transit Hub

For those who are new to The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells (and to those who are not new, too!), I'd like to post an invitation to our Discord server "Murderbot Transit Hub", currently run by myself and @broken-risk-assessment-module.

There are multiple Discord servers for the fans of Murderbot, but our server is created aiming to be beginner friendly. It has separate channels for each book, so that people can join at any point and have discussion without having to worry about seeing spoilers for the books you have not read yet. It is also a gateway to other servers, as it has links to many of them.

Currently, we are planning to start audiobook listening-along events for Exit Strategy. (We have done ASR, AC, and RP so far.) Basically, we stream one chapter per week, and people can just listen, participate in text-chat, share their thoughts in the relevant channel, etc.

I wont pretend I'm a writer as my main creative output, but I dabble. my fear is that once this list exists it's all anyone will be able to see in my writing 💀

✨ introspective dialogue. I loooove making characters talk each other through their problems

✨ copious description of body language, especially where characters are looking and what they're doing with their hands

✨ opening or closing a story with a line of dialogue. sometimes both 💀

✨ em dashes that could probably have just been commas

✨ themes about community, interpersonal relationships, the bonds that bind characters together, and how such things affect them.

Gurathin is not only wrong, his argument is fundamentally irrational

Gurathin's argument in ASR:

We need to immobilize this SecUnit stat, because it's going to kill us.

I know it's going to kill us because its logs show that it's rogue. If there is no way to control it, then it is dangerous to us.

It is controlled by the Company to sabotage us. "The missing hazard report, the missing map sections. The SecUnit must be part of that." If it wasn't, that would be a coincidence, which is unbelievable.

This SecUnit has gone rogue and killed people in its charge before. It may do so again.

PresAux's counterargument:

It may be rogue, but that doesn't logically mean it will kill us. "The fact that the Unit has been acting to preserve our lives, to take care of us, while it was a free agent, gives us even more reason to trust it." (Volescu)

Someone may be sabotaging us, but that doesn't logically mean it's the Company or our SecUnit. "There were only three SecUnits for DeltFall in their specs, but there were five units in their habitat. Someone is sabotaging us, but I don’t think our SecUnit is part of it." (Ratthi)

If the SecUnit was trying to sabotage us, then why would it tell us about the combat module sabotage and shoot itself? (Bharadwaj, Overse)

The SecUnit believes it went rogue as a result of malfunction, and that hacking its governor module would prevent a repeat occurrence. Confirmation of its sincerity comes from the same logs that Gurathin accessed for his arguments. (Volescu)

Gurathin's counter-counterargument:

this is something that I want to analyze in further depth later, but it surprises me that so many people seem to interpret Murderbot’s reaction to Human One shooting it as exasperation or dismissal. i mean, leaving aside the sheer affective punch of how MB’s narration goes from off-hand and open to completely emotionally closed, like…

they’re both former slaves. indentured human worker or shock-collared construct, Murderbot and Human One were both slaves in the CR not long ago.

and Human One doesn’t recognize that, but Murderbot does. as much as it hurts to get shot, it knows exactly why she did it. it knows she sees a threat when she looks at it: oppression and violence and a return to slavery. she is trapped in the kneejerk reaction of fear and doesn’t see it as a person (let alone a fellow victim!); but with the vulnerability that comes with being someplace where it can be safe to unpack its trauma it sees her, to the point that it empathizes with the person who wanted it dead.

THAT is what’s so upsetting to it. that is why its narration just cuts out there. that is why it’s so miserable afterwards.

Not “Only my reading of canon is correct” or “Interpretations are subjective and all valid” but a secret third thing, “More than one interpretation can be valid but there’s a reason your English teacher had you cite quotes and examples in your papers, you have to have a strong argument that your interpretation is actually supported by the text or it is just wrong and I’m fine with telling you it’s wrong, actually.”
