Day 16: Union Pacific 844
Information from Wikipedia:
Union Pacific 844, also known as the "Living Legend", is a class "FEF-3" 4-8-4 "Northern" type steam locomotive owned and operated by the Union Pacific Railroad for its heritage fleet. Built in December 1944 by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) of Schenectady, New York, No. 844 is one of four surviving FEF Series locomotives and the only one in operation.
The locomotive operated in revenue service until 1959. It was stored while awaiting scrapping, along with the rest of the UP steam locomotive fleet. In 1960, railroad leaders recognized the benefits of having a steam program and retained No. 844 for special activities, the kernel of what has become the Union Pacific's heritage fleet. Today, it is one of UP's oldest serving locomotives and the only steam locomotive owned by a North American Class I railroad that has never been retired.
In 1944, Union Pacific and the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) collaborated on the FEF-3, a class of 10 locomotives designed to pull passenger trains at 90 mph. The FEF-3 could reach and regularly run at 120 mph; one locomotive reportedly pulled a 1,000-ton passenger train at 100 mph. All FEF classes were considered by the Union Pacific to be capable of producing between 4,000 and 5,000 drawbar horsepower.
The FEF-3 class represented the apex of dual-service steam locomotive development; funds and research were being concentrated into the development of diesel-electric locomotives. Originally designed to burn coal, they were converted to run on fuel oil in 1946. Like the earlier FEF-1 and FEF-2 classes, the FEF-3 locomotives were ultimately reassigned to freight service.
UP 844 was the last steam locomotive delivered to the Union Pacific Railroad, constructed as a member of the FEF-3 class of 4-8-4 "Northern" type locomotives. Upon its entry into service, the locomotive spent most of its career pulling a variety of passenger trains, such as the Overland Limited, Los Angeles Limited, Portland Rose and Challenger. From 1957 to 1959, UP 844 was reassigned to fast freight service in Nebraska when diesel-electric locomotives took over passenger service.
After commercial steam operations ended in 1959, the 844 and the rest of the FEF-3 class was placed into storage. Saved from scrapping in 1960, No. 844 was chosen for rebuilding and is now used on company and public excursion trains, along with hauling revenue freight trains during ferry moves.
Since 1960, No. 844 has run hundreds of thousands of miles as Union Pacific's publicity locomotive. The locomotive often pulled the annual Denver Post-sponsored Cheyenne Frontier Days train that ran round-trip from Cheyenne to Denver every July before it was discontinued in early 2019.
It appeared at Expo '74 in Spokane, Washington; the 1978 dedication of the Utah State Railroad Museum in Ogden, Utah; the 1984 World's Fair in New Orleans; and the 50th anniversary celebration of Los Angeles Union Passenger Terminal in 1989, when it performed a side-by-side run with Southern Pacific 4449. On February 14, 1975, it pulled Amtrak's San Francisco Zephyr from Denver, Colorado to Cheyenne, Wyoming with a pair of EMD SDP40Fs. In 1981, it traveled to the opening of the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento, along with Union Pacific 3985, which had recently been restored to operational condition.
Over the weekend of October 14, 1990, No. 844 led a procession of special trains from Kansas City Union Station to Abilene, Kansas for World War II veterans to celebrate the 100th birthday of U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The "Eisenhower Centennial Special" was composed of cars from the Union Pacific, Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway business fleets, with additional passenger cars provided by the Norfolk Southern and Chicago and North Western railroads. Also present in Abilene was General Eisenhower's command train, code-named "Bayonet", including the British A4 steam locomotive No. 60008 and communication and staff cars from WWII's European Theater of Operations.
After the end of the 1991 excursion season, 844 was put in the shop for a major running gear overhaul in addition to other repairs. During that time, 844 was repainted from the passenger greyhound scheme to the freight black. It emerged from the shop in 1996.
On June 21, 1997, on the way to the National Railway Historical Society (NRHS)'s annual convention in Salt Lake City, Utah, 844 and Union Pacific's Executive E units pulled 18 passenger cars on the Union Pacific's soon-to-close Tennessee Pass line, which included tracks on a narrow canyon shelf along the Arkansas River.
On June 24, 1999, while on display during RailFair '99, one of the 844's boiler tubes failed, and the locomotive was subsequently towed dead back to Cheyenne by the recently-overhauled No. 3985. The tube was found to have been made of the wrong material during the overhaul in 1996, a discovery that prompted the replacement of the firebox in a complete overhaul that lasted from September 2001 to 2004. On September 9, 2004, the UP steam crew successfully test-fired the 4-8-4. It returned to operating service on November 10, 2004.
On May 18–19, 2007, No. 844 teamed with Southern Pacific 4449 to pull the "Puget Sound Excursion", a round trip from Tacoma to Everett on BNSF Railway tracks.
On June 25 and 26, 2010, it made an excursion trip to Milliken, Colorado's centennial celebration.
In September 2012, the locomotive was used in "UP 150", a celebration of Union Pacific's 150th anniversary celebration, hosted by the California State Railroad Museum. During that time, it also stopped at Walsenburg, Colorado for a night photo session, parked next to ex-Lake Superior and Ishpeming 2-8-0 “consolidation” 18, which was operated by the Rio Grande Scenic Railroad at the time, before that line was shut down.
In June 2013, the locomotive's gyrating Mars Light, installed in 1946, was removed because its mounting bolts had deteriorated. It was also announced that year that the 844 and 3985 would eventually be joined by a third steam locomotive: Big Boy No. 4014.
After the 2013 season, the locomotive was taken out of service for boiler work required by a change in the water treatment. It spent 2014 in Cheyenne, then received an early 15-year inspection the following year.
On June 16 and 17, 2016, the 844 was test-fired. On July 12, 2016, the Union Pacific Steam Team took the locomotive on a "break-in run" as a sort of all-systems check and dress rehearsal for its return to service. The run was described as a complete success. On July 23, 2016, it pulled the annual Cheyenne Frontiers Day excursion.
On October 13, 2016, the Union Pacific Steam Team started its 18-day "Trek To Tennessee" journey: the restored 844's first major trip.
In April 2017, No. 844 made its first run on the Oregon Short Line Railroad to celebrate the 92nd anniversary of the Boise Union Pacific Depot. Because of heavy snows and a wet spring, the trip was cut short and the engine had to run light across the Malad River because of a washed-out bridge.
In December 2018, Union Pacific requested Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) waivers to exempt UP Nos. 844, 3985 and 4014 from federal Positive Train Control (PTC) requirements in February 2019, the FRA officials responded that such waivers were not needed.
On May 4, 2019, No. 844 participated in the inaugural run of the newly-restored Big Boy No. 4014. The train departed the historic Cheyenne Depot following a christening ceremony for No. 4014. The two locomotives arrived at the Ogden Union Station on May 9 for the city's Heritage Festival. The two locomotives were on display at the station until May 12, when the return trip to Cheyenne began. They arrived at Cheyenne on May 19, concluding the first run of No. 4014 in excursion service.
As of January 2020, Nos. 844 and 4014 are the only two operational UP steam locomotives left on the active roster, following the retirement of No. 3985 from excursion service due to its poor mechanical condition. No. 3985 was eventually donated to the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America on April 28, 2022. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, UP cancelled all of its 2020 steam excursions and stated that Nos. 844 and 4014 would not operate for the 2020 operating season. UP eventually resumed excursion operations with No. 4014 in August and September 2021. No future excursions have thus far been scheduled for No. 844.
From 1962 to 1989, the locomotive was numbered UP 8444 because the railroad had given the number 844 to an EMD GP30 locomotive. After the GP30 was retired from active service in June 1989, No. 8444 was renumbered back to 844. That GP30 is now owned by Nevada State Railroad Museum in Boulder City, Nevada, and operates periodically at the Nevada Southern Railroad Museum on excursion runs. There is now an EMD SD70ACe on the UP roster numbered 8444.
On July 21, 2018, while pulling the Cheyenne Frontier Days Special to Denver, Colorado, No. 844 struck and killed a pedestrian in Henderson, Colorado. It was reported that the pedestrian was trying to take photos of the train while standing too close to the tracks before she was hit. The train was stopped immediately following the accident.
UP 844 was documented in the 1981 film "Eighty Four Forty Four" by the Union Pacific Railroad. Some of those clips would be later used for the opening and closing credits of the PBS show Shining Time Station, which ran from 1989 until 1995 (including the four hour-long Family Specials).
UP 844 also appears in Extreme Trains in the episode "Steam Train", in which it pulled the Frontier Days special from Denver to Cheyenne.
UP 844 also makes an appearance in the 2nd Episode of the 3rd Season on the TLC TV series, Mostly True Stories?: Urban Legends Revealed.
In the 1990 PBS special Ghost Trains of the Old West, UP 8444, as it was numbered at the time of filming, is seen pulling a Union Pacific diesel locomotive and passenger train through Wyoming.
UP 844 (and several other restored steam locomotives) appear in the music video with the Pat Metheny Group's "Last Train Home".
The 2014 short film "Locomotive Song" features UP 844—particularly its running gear—accompanied by the song of the same name by boogie-woogie pianist Honey Piazza.

For the OC Ask game:
☄️ Comet - Who is your most self destructive character? Why are they like that?
🌙 Crescent moon - Do any of your characters have to hide a part of themselves? Why?
🛰 Satellite - Do you have a character who is very dependent on another character? Is it healthy or unhealthy?
☄️ Comet - Who is your most self destructive character? Why are they like that?
Ohhh that'd definitely be Mia. Especially in her latest FC5 iteration, she's always put doing the "right" thing over her own safety, but it's a double-edged sword -- she's the type to throw herself headfirst into danger to save lives, but always with that little quiet hope that she won't make it out the other side. It's all tied to her self-worth: she thinks that every shortcoming that's led her this far will be wiped clean if she manages to do One Big Thing that will clear her name and turn her into someone worth being remembered. She'd 10000% rather be a martyr than a living failure.
🌙 Crescent moon - Do any of your characters have to hide a part of themselves? Why?
I think all of them do for various reasons, but Piper (my beloved) gets the spotlight this time around. XD After Tripps, she's starting to realize that there's something More to her, between prophetic dreams and small (and not so small!) supernatural happenings that tend to happen around her whenever she's distressed. At first she hides it because she's in denial that she's the one responsible at all, but when she gets to Vegas and discovers just why she's that way, she feels she has to keep it from the Boulder crew just so that they don't associate her with the magic that destroyed the world in the first place. She's terrified that she's going to be seen as someone that's Just As Bad as Flagg in the end.
🛰 Satellite - Do you have a character who is very dependent on another character? Is it healthy or unhealthy?
It's so hard not to put TedPipes here but I'll restrain myself jfkld;safd I actually really love writing codependent relationships in varying stages of healthiness because it's incredibly fun fjdlk;safd but cycling over to DBH, it'd have to be Sawyer on this one. They're most definitely a victim of circumstance, but they tend to attach themselves to whoever they deem is "safe", whether that happens to be true or not, especially when they're in distress and believe that they can't get out of a situation on their own. Their dependence on Markus is definitely not the healthiest at first. He's their bodyguard, their only consistent companion, and while they're trapped in their house, he's their only link to the world. (Plus he's the only one that 100% is NOT the one secretly terrorizing them into staying home in the first place fjdkls;) But even with the rocky start, it definitely builds into something much healthier and mutually beneficial as both they and Markus realize where their strength really lies.

God I really need to work on the short that’s in progress, funnily enough I have two. One from last year I never finished. It was for the holiday season, called ‘The Christmas Cannonball’ and I just didn’t finish it in time so I’ve held onto what I have for this year. Problem is I still haven’t finished it. And every time I go to work on it I lose motivation since I’ve got ‘nothing but time’. Which kinda sucks but hey what can I do? Just hope I get it done in time.
This other one ‘Hey Porter! Hey Porter!’ Is going slowly. Mainly on account of my co-writer (no hate to him! He just keeps forgetting to do his parts). I already have the promo image done for it, and I have for a while now despite it being probably the most complex of the ones I’ve done so far. Actually hands down it’s d the most complicated one, but I’m very proud of it since reference for the engines/rail vehicles I had to draw didn’t have the most specific reference for both their size and the pictures I could find weren’t the best but I made due and I’m quite pleased with it! So in the meantime I’ve considered started a third one to chip away at while the other two slowly get worked on. Problem is, I’ve got multiple shorts I wanna do apart from ‘Hey Porter! Hey Porter!‘ so that doesn’t help. Do I do something with the Southern Pacific and their Daylight engines? Do I do the New York Central and their Mohawk mafia? Or do I do Union Pacific’s living legend Colt and his hate for the UP’s theme song? I don’t know, and I’m very open to suggestions, especially for new storylines! I always love hearing other peoples ideas and at least considering them!

I hate this girl, I've decided. I signed up for insane teenage lesbians, not six year olds in their bodies. Everything so far from her POV could have been two fucking chapters. It's bad for Pyrrha, because Nona's POV is terrible for establishing characterization. The Sixth were always about *action*, have been since before Camila was created and that action was getting Fef in the Medium, so it feels wrong for them to bum around BOE trying to get Harrow to come back to her body for 6 months, the gang is too numerous to be really distinguished besides Hot Sauce, I just *don't like this*. Gideon's opening was fucking awesome and intriguing and a really great Worldbuilding piece. Nona's, 13% of the way through the book, I keep forgetting isn't set on a craphole modern Earth. BOE Planet #3 is uninteresting, and so is everyone there, except *maybe* Hot Sauce. I think these books have been declining in quality.

What is the absolute dumbest thing X has had to bail the Guardians out of in Legends Reborn? (Volnutt cannot be part of this incident.)
WELL-
Their first days on Terra are…interesting for lack of a better word. Unlike their father and younger brother, they didn’t really understand much about Carbon culture or just Terra stuff since they are generals of Neo Arcadia (They weren’t given a moment to unwind themselves). So their casual social skills are…questionable at best.
This comes from a particular moment when they got into a fight with an Old lady with her very large grandson, a bank accountant, an employee, 3 teenagers and some random guy with a mascot costume at the Department store over a lawn chair of all things.
It was a misunderstanding gone too far
The grandson threw Phantom to the other side of the convenience store after he accidentally gave his grandma a heart attack for being his spooky self.
The 3 teens were trying to get Fefnir’s autograph to but Fef’s focused on getting that fucking lawn chair they keep pushing him oh and is wrestling with the guy with the mascot costume.
Harpy was having a screaming match with the employee for how poorly he organizes the cans and other items.
And Levi somehow ends up in debate with the bank accountant over sardines.
X had to step in to deescalate the whole thing and drag his kids back to the flutter, plus it was getting too chaotic-
Volnutt has never laughed so hard in his life
Or the other one from a Fun house….we don’t talk about that-

ive been thinkin about it but vris <3< fef. like the other thief and witch duo had some beef though pretty one sided, however i think the two of them could be on board with it. maybe even c3< eridan or kanaya
girl who would do anything to climb to the top and will make riots happen to do so vs. girl who has anything and everything but simply wants everyone to hold hands and sing kumbaya. vriska envying feferi for having so much power in her hands but not wanting to do anything and feferi seeing vriska as a troublemaker who's jostling the boat too much to have everyone get along. vriska trying to make feferi out to be this giant authority figure to rebel against as they grow up while feferi resents "responsibility" being put on her and having bad things attached to her name when she simply wants to vibe. it's got to be eridan auspiticizing because kanaya's too much of a lesbian for hot crazy butches to not just accede to vriska every time. vriska gets a big bad to fight against for her 24/7 larp as a rebel hero renegade and feferi is forced to actually make tough decisions and take stances and come into her own power. yeah i can see it happening

Mom I need your opinion on sollux and eridan (please?) :3
Yes my child no problem 😄
Another pair of toxic trolls who're often shipped together! Ngl I'm not fully sure what kind of answer has been wanted between this and the last ask cause I'm not sure if you just want me to talk about each of the characters separately or if you're also wanting me to acknowledge the ship between them and the nuances in it so I try to cover both.
Again, to preface this these are both shitty 13 year old boys who aren't great people trolls and part of that is cause of the hellscape of a world they grew up in. So today's purity standards don't apply to them in the fact that yes they're shitty but for the zillionth time depiction is not glorification and they're literally pawns for the narrative.
For Sollux, he's a gamer/hacker dude that is recognizably based on a lot of guys like that in the 2000s. He's not a great person in that he uses slurs and isn't pc but he's a very real 13 year old boy who taught himself all about how computers work and just likes to play games and talk shit with his friends. I feel especially bad for him when I think about how Vriska forced him to kill Aradia and how he has to live with not only that but also his visions of Doom and knowing that he and all of his friends would die. He's a tragic character but he's also pretty fun to play around with in art and fanfics. Also he's a very shippable character like there's a lot of different ships that he works great in esp stuff like Fefsolradia and such
For Eridan, he's a punkass little "nice guy" spoiled rich 13 year old with a superiority complex. He supports genocide of lowbloods and has no respect for Fef's right to be with whoever she wants. Granted, the situation he grew up in with only really having her as a good friend and his responsibility of helping keep Gl'bgolyb fed didn't exactly discourage that way of thinking at all and probably fed into it but if SGrub hadn't happened while it could've been a possibility for him to learn better its likely he wouldn't because of how Alternian society promotes selfishness and the idea that highbloods deserve anything they want. Narratively he makes sense and he exists in order to fill the role of "nice guy" who ends up wrecking their future just because he was rejected. At least that's canon Eridan. Fanon Eridan can be more fun just because ppl like to focus on his being a uwu soft boi and his love of magic and esp his kissmesis/matesprit ships with Sollux. Also obligatory shout out to March Eridan love that shit just cause it's silly.
As far as their ship goes, there's a lot of fun to be had and there's far too many fics of them out there to count. Are they healthy for each other? Absolutely not without a very long fic of them learning how to be better people and getting over their own shit. Did I used to ship in high school? Absolutely though I haven't cared about it in years.

Working with a trio of Amtrak E8s, Union Pacific 8444 (844) steams along with the Eastbound San Francisco Zephyr. While several people know about the 1977 Amtrak Transcontinental Steam Excursion headed by Southern Pacific 4449, the 8444 also got the chance to help out Amtrak by pulling the San Francisco Zephyr between Denver, Colorado and Cheyenne, Wyoming as shown with this image: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=5391560

There’s so much potential in a story where Feferi gets a descendant on earth C.
Assuming Fef was revived at some point or in an Au where she was there for the final battle, the idea that on Earth C she has to eventually take care of another fuschiablood is so interesting. Yes, there are other lusi with fuschia blood despite the calamari elderitch terror but consider: A) it’s cute and B) I think Feferi would really strive to be the opposite of HIC
Not just in her morals and but in her actions and philosophy. She’s the spitting image of her ancestor whether she likes it or not, and even if she’s friendly, trained (and maybe even instinctual) fear of her caste won’t vanish overnight. Her lowerblooded friends might flinch when she raises her voice, or back away when she has her trident in hand. It’s not because they fear her personally, it’s just engraved in them.
Not only that but I think Fef could have a fear of becoming like the condescension herself. As far as she knows, she could be just as bad inside. Descendants take after their ancestors after all.
That’s why I think she would take in her heiress. As a way to confirm to herself that she’s nothing like HIC because surely her imperious condescension would just kill the grub. But look at Feferi! She’s going to raise it! She’s nothing like her ancestor at all 3:)
And maybe she’s good at it. Maybe she’s not. Maybe Fef tries too hard to make sure her descendant doesn’t turn out like Alternia’s previous empress. Another Peixes would look like Feferi, but it would also look just like Meenah by association, and maybe that makes Fef afraid.
Maybe she insists on cutting her charge’s hair, or braiding it despite the child’s complaints and wishes to grow it out.
Maybe she “suggests” more dressy options because the outfit her charge picked is too close to HIC’s for comfort.
Maybe Fef freaks out when she catches a lowblood doing something for her heiress, not knowing the fuschia just asked for help because she couldn’t figure out how to do it herself.
Maybe she hesitates to let her charge have a trident, or even any weapon at all as she grows up. Despite her kin being the only troll she knows who’s not trained in self defense.
Feferi would be such a sweet caretaker, one full of genuine love. But she would be overcome with fear of the past, even if it’s channeled subconsciously, or through small comments. And that? That would take a toll on the grub she took in.
Fef’s not perfect. Far from it actually. I’ve seen feferi both as a pillar of good in HS fanworks and I’ve seen her slowly become evil. And honestly? I like both interpretations. So I say this. Let her be both. You can be a good person who makes bad choices, or thinks the hurtful things they do will have good outcomes. In so many ways I think Feferi is just like Meenah, it’s just that she genuinely doesn’t think her actions or beliefs are bad.
Compared to other Fuschia’s Feferi is considered an rare oddity for having basic decency, but she’s still a coddling person who thinks she knows what’s best for others. And that would absolutely rub off on a grub raised by her, who would either Rebel like Meenah did on Beforus or become a people pleaser to appease her.
Realistically I think her descendant would have the same “I know best for you so I’ll take care of you” attitude but in a more Meenah way. A subtle way.
I implore someone to do it for the Vine, please.

Well now I’m curious what are all your homestuck ships and what characters do/would you rp as?
Ohhhhhh boy anon you're in for a ride. Remember when Hussie declared that 'everything is canon' even with fan works? I took that and RAN with it. Note about Sollux: You'll see the same ships in both red and pitch but it's because of his dual nature and typically tends to naturally go back and forth with certain trolls. Another note- this might not be all of them, just the ones I still think about to this day.
Moirails
Sollux <> Karkat
Karkat <> Gamzee
Nepeta <> Equius
Mituna <> Kurloz
Meenah <> Aranea
Signless <> Psiioniic
Sollux <> Aradia (post game mostly)
Roxy <> Calliope
Matesprits
Dave <3 Karkat
Dave <3 John
Mituna <3 Kurloz
Mituna <3 Cronus
Mituna <3 GHB (weird scratch timeline mixing + before his accident or a Dreambubble type thing)
Sollux <3 Gamzee
Sollux <3 Karkat
Sollux <3 Equius
GHB <3 Psiioniic (before helmsman)
Daulscar <3 Psiioniic (pre and post helmsman for MORE angst)
Signless <3 Disciple
Kankri <3 Cronus
Kanaya <3 Rose
Latula <3 Roxy
Latula <3 Porrim
Latula <3 Muelin
Nepeta <3 Feferi (like...one of my few Fef ships lol but even I acknowledge how cute they were after splitting from their sprite)
Mindfang <3 Summoner
Sawtooth <3 Squarewave
Kismesis
Gamzee <3- Dave (we all know why)
Aradiabot <3- Equius
Sollux <3- Equius
Mindfang <3- Dualscar
Terezi <3- Gamzee
Damara <3- Meenah
Sollux <3- Gamzee
Sollux <3- Eridan
Auspisticism
wasn't actually a big deal to me and depended on what were were doing. The only real one I have is Nepeta for Sollux and Equius or maybe like Karkat for Sollux with Eridan or Gamzee.
Now...there IS one ship I just can't place anywhere in this and it's Vriska x Terezi. They could very much be like Signless and Disciple in having something greater than the quadrants because Terezi (to my knowledge) is STILL looking for Vriska instead of continuing with the rest of the group, and that speaks to me.
As for who I can roleplay:
All Captors (Sollux, Mituna, Psiioniic)
Karkat or Signless, Kankri's a little hard for me but can attempt!
Gamzee (mostly pre-sober)
Tavros (though my knowledge on FLARP has gone down the drain lol)
Nepeta
Latula
Dave or Dirk
And of course I can always dust a character off and see if I can try and roleplay someone else, these are just the ones that I remember cycling through a lot. Mainly I'd stick to rping as the Captors, but you gotta switch it up every once in a while. ^^

FUCK YEAH REQUESTS ARE OPEN okay okay okay SO can i ask for karkat having the biggest pale crush on a human on the meteor, but he’s freaking out because do humans even have those??? meanwhile the human in question is just waiting for him to tell them because literally everyone can tell he likes them (or this same prompt with eridan and flushed romance, or fef and pitch if your up for it!! thanks dude)
(also!! gender neutral or masc reader :3)
Gonna be honest this can be read as a pale or red crush 🤷‍♀️ was not my intention but teehee
Karkat is just such an obvious person about literally everything ever lmao. He’s very emotional and he’s practically an open book. Which is why you’ll be able to know how he feels, however he never tells you because he doesn’t want to ruin what you two already have and he doesn’t want things to be extremely awkward if you don’t feel the same, even worse if you’re not even capable of feeling the same. He would only tell under the circumstance that he knows one of you will die. Other than that you’d have to tell him how you really felt too lol :p

I really wish I could finish something at the moment without a heavy need to share the wip. BUT ALAS, my brain doesn't want to work anymore today, but AAAAAAAAAAAAAA THIS IS CUTE. So here. For @waythroughtheice :3
Geo stared at the gun in his hands.
“You want me to… what?” he asked, giving Axl and Brook a confused look.
“Play a game of paintball with us,” Axl grinned. Ah. So he had heard them correctly the first time.
“You’ve played laser tag before, right?” asked Brook.
“Yeah,” Geo muttered. Back then. Back before-
“It’s like that,” Axl assured him. “Only a bit more physical. Think of it as target practice.” Brook turned to Omega. “You gonna join us, handsome?” she queried. The blonde reploid let out a scoff. “No,” he grumbled. “It makes a shit ton of a mess.”
  “Kill joy,” she teased.
“Okay, but like… why?” Geo spoke up. Axl shrugged. “Like I said,” the prototype started. “It’s good real time target practice. You can actually see where you’ve shot.”
“Plus, it’s fun,” Brook added. He didn’t deserve fun. Geo still wasn’t too sure about this. “Does it hurt?” he fretted.
“I mean, yeah,” Brook answered. “But nothing worse than a couple of bruises. It’s good for you. And, makes a fun mess. Watch.” The ruddy haired woman then turned and shot Axl in the back of his leg, causing a splash of green paint to explode on his jeans. He wasn’t wearing any armor. Nobody wore armor unless at HQ. Axl let out a yelp as he turned to glare at Brook. “Why do you always do that?” he hissed.
“Funny,” Brook grinned, causing Omega to let out a raucous laughter. Axl glared at the crimson clad reploid, shooting him in the chest with his own paint gun; the splash of orange paint clashing horribly with his deep red shirt.
  It definitely shut him up.
But now he looked royally pissed at the prototype.
“Whoops, my finger slipped,” Axl said, trying to play innocent. It didn’t pacify Omega in the least.
“Give me one of those stupid things,” he growled. Brook merely chuckled as she loaded up a fourth paintball gun.
“Brook! Brook!” a young voice called from the porch, causing Geo to look in that direction. Everyone else was currently sitting outside in the early summer sun; a small get-together X had insisted Geo join. He still wasn’t sure why.
In any case, Fefnir was currently running towards Brook, an excited expression on his face. “Can I play too?!” he enthusiastically asked. “Can I? Please?!” Brook regarded her younger sibling for a second. “You’ll have to ask Dad on that one, Fef,” she told him.
“DAD! Please?!” Fefnir begged, causing X to sigh. “Are you going to get upset if you lose?” the blue clad reploid demanded.
“I won’t” the dark haired guardian promised. “Please? Please can I play?” X gave the three adults a look, why wasn’t he looking at Geo like that? before letting out another sigh. “Fine,” he relented. “Just… please be careful.”
“YES!” Fefnir cheered. He ran over to Brook, taking a prepared paint gun from her. “Anyone else wanna join?” she called, getting no response from the other party-goers. She shrugged. “Guess we’re doing a free-for-all, then.”
“Psst, Geo!” Fefnir ‘whispered’. (He was really bad at this.) “Let’s be secret teammates!”
…Geo wasn’t exactly sure what he meant by that, but he couldn’t help the smile that slowly spread on his face. “Uh… sure,” he said, extending his pinky finger out to the child-sized reploid. Fefnir in turn, gleefully wrapped his own pinky around Geo’s.
“Alright boys,” Brook called out. “Ground rules. No intentional headshots. Yes, Axl, that goes for you, too.” The ginger reploid gave out an exaggerated groan. “Rule two, no shooting anyone who isn’t playing. Yes, Omega, that goes for you, too.” Geo was beginning to think there was some history with these rules. “Rule three, keep your safety gear on at all times. Yes, Geo, that goes for you, too.” The brunette opened his mouth to protest, he hadn’t even played before! But, Brook continued on. “Rule four, stay on the property. Yes, Fefnir, that goes for you, too. You’re tasked with showing Geo the borders, okay?” The reploid giggled as he nodded. “And rule five, be yourself and have fun. Any questions?”
“Are you sure we can’t shoot anyone who isn’t playing?” Omega asked, smirking.
“Sir, I will shoot you myself,” Brook deadpanned. “With a buster. Anyone else?”
“Uh… how do we pick a winner?” Geo hesitantly asked. Brook gave him a wicked grin. “Whoever has the least amount of paint on them by the time everyone runs out of ammo wins,” she told him. “Alright, y’all got one minute to hide. Good luck!” And with that, the ruddy haired woman ducked into the trees; Omega and Axl quickly running into the small stretch of woods after her.
  Huh.
  Now what?
“C’mon Geo!” Fefnir called. “I’ll show you the best hiding spot!”
