Urban forests in the spotlight of the first episode of the UN Forest Podcast.
Trees belong in cities. Yet, as cities across the globe get bigger, trees and green spaces are lost to new buildings and infrastructure. With less than 20 percent of ground area covered by tree crowns, on average, cities all over the world need many more trees than they have today. But why? Why do we need to bring nature back into people’s neighborhoods?
Let our first UN Forest Podcast episode inspire you.
Find opportunities to grow, care for and support trees and forests on your property and in your community.
Contribute to a local tree-planting project
Share the importance of urban forestry with your friends, your family, your neighbors and your political representatives.
We can definitely all play a part.
In the first episode of the UN Forest Podcast – “Urban forests hosted by Stefano Boeri” – architect and professor at Politecnico di Milano, Stefano Boeri, and Cecil Konijnendijk, professor of urban forestry researcher and contributor to many UNECE urban forest publications, discuss how we can expand green space areas across cities that are often very dense and how can we guarantee that the benefits of urban forests are provided in a sound and inclusive way.
They both agree that cities are better off with trees. Urban forests are beneficial to human well-being, support biodiversity and provide economic benefits. In Mr. Boeri’s words, “urban greening is not an option, but the most effective, cost-effective and inclusive choice to counter the effects of climate change” and create a sustainable future.
Often, however, green spaces are not equally distributed across neighborhoods. “If we do not bring green spaces to people, all people, in cities,” stresses Prof. Konijnendijk, “then these people really will miss out on some essential benefits.” If all urban dwellers lived within 300 meters of a green space, as the World Health Organization recommend, 43.000 premature deaths could be prevented, a new study found. This speaks to the importance of distributing trees equitably, regardless of income or status.
This is also when Prof. Konijnendijk’s 3-30-300 rule comes into play. It calls for every resident to be able to see at least 3 trees from their home and live in a neighborhood with at least 30% tree canopy cover, with the nearest public green space no further than 300 meters from their door. (Nature Based Solutions Institute) This formula supports green cities where no one is left behind.
The key priority for cities is to first and foremost conserve the green species and trees they already have, improve, and expand them. With limited spaces in our dense cities, city planners and architects face a massive challenge to keep and integrate more nature into cities. Vertical forests, that are homes to people and biodiversity, are one way to do so by returning part of the built space to nature. A pioneer of buildings that combine high-density residential development with tree planting in city centers, Stefano Boeri designed and built the first prototype in Milan in 2014. Stefano Boeri Architetti has since designed vertical forests all over the world, including the first Vertical Forest for social housing in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, as well as projects in Huanggang, China and in Cairo, Egypt. Proper planning, good management, and long-term, comprehensive, and integrated programmes that bring onboard all key players are essential for expanding tree coverage in cities. Successful urban greening projects need sound strategies, policies, legislation, appropriate funding and resources, but community-based activities are also needed.

Listening to a podcast about Marie-Angélique Memmie le Blanc, one of the few attested feral children found in France. Marie-Angélique had quite an exceptional life since she came to France from northern America (she was Native American), survived the plague epidemic that welcomed her in Marseille and lived for 10 years in the wild with another little girl (traveling around 750km by foot from Marseille to Songy) until she was discovered/captured. Then, she learned to speak French perfectly being one of the few attested feral children to be able to gain full mastery of a language after years of not using one. She also learned to read and write.
Her life story from start to finish is one of the better documented histories of feral children in the world.
Marie-Angélique died alone at 63 in her own house in Paris under the tutelage of no one (she was receiving a pension from the Queen of France). While she had been an object of curiosity, she was never displayed as a freak attraction and lived her later life in a relatively privileged way for Ancien Régime France. The one thing she apparently wanted to do but could not was becoming a nun since no congregation accepted that she joined them (the feral - as in way too close to savage - being the issue here). Beside this, Marie-Angélique’s social integration was a major success.
Still one of the guest on the podcast, a man, described her as dying like « upperclass old maid » (« une vielle-fille bourgeoise ») in Paris. When another speaker, a woman, said that there are worse fates than being an « upperclass old maid » the guest insisted in a way that really hammered that he thinks it was a bad fate for her. He said something along the lines of « she could have kept living in the forest » (probably forgetting that Marie-Angélique only companion had died very recently by the time she was discovered because Marie-Angélique had, from her own admission, most likely killed her).
The woman answered that she would have died if she had stayed in the forest and the man kept going by saying that « but she lived there for 10 years » and the woman had to remind him that Marie-Angélique was 60 by the time she died and « climbing trees and jumping into rivers to fish with your hands is not the same thing at 19 than at 60 ». Still the man grumbled.
While there is something to be said about the fact that Marie-Angélique was strictly reeducated in a very gendered very French way which did not take into account her skills and own culture, I think the guest’s disdain for her fate (quite positive) that had her lived a long and confortable life after living in the woods for ten years is extremely troubling. And borderline misogynistic.
There is no proof that Marie-Angélique’s later life was particularly sad, another guest even commented that she likely held salon at her Parisian house. To say that her ultimate fate is tragic because she was just an « upper class old maid » rather than « an exceptional wild child » (and not because she might have been murdered by a man who owned her money btw) is simply insulting. Yes she found a place in society and was capable to adapt, yes she was unmarried but still well-off. All of these are successes, not tragic outcome. That woman lived. Die mad about it.

12:43 - THE STORY OF MYRA’S LAMENT FOR LAMLASH BAY
I plagiarise songs into local events..the one I sang last night I wrote at 3 AM in the morning. My wife had been in hospital 100 miles away, for two months, and the chorus came to my head when I was feeling sorry for myself. Simultaneously, the Government had decided to ban us clamming in Lamlash Bay. I’d sustainably hand picked scallops there for 34 years. The trawler/dredgers were destroying the habitat, and they wanted to
ban them. But they done us in as well… a Federal hammer to crack a wee nut!!!! So, the song is called “Myra’s lament for Lamlash Bay”…Lamlash is at the Isle of Arran.
Tommy Makem inspired my plagiarism with “The Boys from Killybegs.” Killybegs is a fishing port in Donegal, Ireland..Dun Na Gael…. The Fortress of the Stranger. Tommy famously sang and played banjo with the Glancy Brothers..
Sgheirs:- Gaelic..reefs pronounced “skerries.
clams”:- generic term in Scotland for bivalve shellfish..we fish for scallops..Pecten maximus
Sound:- navigable stretch of water between two pieces of land in this case formed by the Tarbert shore and Isle of Arran.
Thole :- Lalands Scots (old Scots) my work they won’t accept or tolerate.
Dole:- Un-employment register
Listen to the original version of the song on the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast #85.
Myra’s Lament for Lamlash Bay
lyrics Liam Griffin, music Marc Gunn
There are scallops in the sea, put there for you and me By the Lord who reigns from heaven above. And the divers catch and sell, but we won’t go to hell, We treat the sea with joy, respect and love.
* There’s a wild and rolling sea bringing me back home to ye. To yer bed that’s dry and crisp and woman warm And our lovin’ knows no harm when I hold ye in my arms. When the Boys from Lerags Glen come rollin’ home.
There are rocks upon the shore, There are sgheirs even more* And the trawlers they are dredging to and fro’ But the diver’s in the gully, for the seabed we don’t sully Hand pickin’ is the way I chose to go.
But today the sea is calm and the boat is full of clams** And swiftly we have cleared KilBrannon Sound..*** Sacks of scallops stacked up high All our divers safe and dry And soon for Lerags Glen we’re homeward bound.
But now a new day’s dawned and time is moving on and conservation is a game that they al play and my work the cannot thole and I’m told to sign the dole No more from Lerags Glen go to the sea.

P for Prowess huh?
Your sensational speed beats super sonic.I can't believe I crammed the phrase supersonic speed for my composition paper in std 8 and only remembering it today.Who knows I could have beaten an astute Sikuku with the sharpest brains and maybe gender equality or male chauvinism would not be among the 17 UN Global Sustainable Development Goals .Ik I lost you in between the lines. And the facts I just said can only divorce.I can see you furrowing your eyebrows. As pragmatic as it could be that's me.Oh,If root cause Analysis was a person. In real life it screams detail oriented yet so Indecisive.Cheers for still trusting and hoping the poem is still about you.It is.Youre the core incase I spin away.I had started so well. That was one of the many soliloquies I'm having as I jolt this. These are my daily fragments.xoxo for bearing with my disfigurements.
At this point I am realizing art is so irrational.I am disturbed. And the famous question creatives are asked'what is your inspiration ' is slowly dehumanizing. Its no longer a heartbreak or the forests however much of a passionate dendrophile I am..I'm experiencing everything differently and not just poetically. Yk why? I postponed this particular piece waiting for the perfect inspiration.(feeling like a sneaky link"after elections, after results, after supreme court, after inauguration",alafu nakata simu😂)So daunting bc unless you master striving for progress not perfection, its gibberish .I have had so many poetic moments that I crease.(Damn monologue/soliloquy 2;Again)****Yk what? Mental masturbation is the real pandemic😅.
Airpods or nothing. What's you without them.(Inserts Mundane). You are that pinterest girl everyone has on all our P boards. When I was 18,I wish I listened to podcasts with nothing but spasms of joy and recommend my friends.Like you do.(oops at 18 I was just hoping I meant the world to him like he did to me).I mean we just started a whole podcast.Such a big deal. All this to say you have always dignified the things you love and had this enormous teachable spirit.
We gotta stop the whole academic validation tale.Look around. It all skews to you.Effortlessly.Innate.Are there men who are sapiosexual btw? You're so smart and thing is you can explain rock science to a four year old.
Needless say I thought this whole piece would have 100 'you're pretty 'just skimmed through it and none.See,I'm always the drama.How.So we do the maths (you're pretty×1000.❤)For once I have appreciated the math pioneeers. All we do is curse them😂.They saw this coming.
Ik we are friends if everytime I say crap or crazy stuff you're not shocked and even laugh about it.The bar is where it should be at.Heartfelt.
Loads of love,to wealth,clarity of purpose,mental wellness,peace and stability.
gee.m💕

#SublimationIsBack remplit l'Ancienne Belgique (gratuitement)
