looking at the latest forecast models, it is very unlikely that we’ll hit 40°C in the next few weeks, in fact it looks like we’re gonna be having rather changeable and mild weather, with warmer weather intruding into the south from time to time.

Interestingly though, I know the model run that was referenced here that sparked this post being sent around again, there was a few GFS ensemble members picking up a signal for high 30’s at the time of this being posted, but the majority of the other members were not having any of it. This is why it’s always worth watching forecast models, and looking at what patterns are being picked up on when it comes to extreme events (big things to look out for are how big the spread is, how far from the event are we (anything from D10 onwards is often called “fantasy island” for a reason), and is this pattern being picked up on other models such as the ECMWF, UKMO and even UKV (though the UKV doesn’t have an ensemble iirc) for shorter term forecasting.)

of course this isn’t to say that you shouldn’t be familiarising yourself with tips on how to deal with extreme heat, in fact with 40°C being reached last year, we should all be thinking about how to minimise risk of heat related illnesses. last year was not a “one off”, it was a tipping point, we WILL see these temperature extremes again, and they’ll only become more common as time goes on.
