Iraqi MMA fighter aspires to become a world champion
Tumblr media
Amir Albazi's journey to become the first Iraqi man fighting for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) may have been tougher than any of his bouts to date.
The rising talent in professional mixed martial arts (MMA) was born in Baghdad but grew up in Sweden, after his family fled Iraq to escape Saddam Hussein's authoritarian regime.
Albazi arrived in the Nordic country as a boy who could not speak a word of Swedish - and he experienced severe culture shock in his new surroundings.
"In school, I couldn't understand what people were saying, but I could tell they were making fun of me," he told the BBC. "The only way I could express myself was with my fists."
The 29-year-old said his world was transformed when, by chance, he found MMA on TV. It was love at first sight.
As a professional, Albazi is known by his ring name, "The Prince" - a translation of his Arabic first name. He now has almost 15 years of experience in the sport and wants to become the first Iraqi and Arab champion in the UFC's history.
"I feel a great responsibility on my shoulders being the only Iraqi in the UFC. I feel as if I am representing my country and the whole Arab world," he said.

Renato Moicano believes that Rafael Fiziev vs Justin Gaethje is a mismatch. Rafael Fiziev, a relatively new face in MMA, but extremely popular fighter, has quickly risen to the top of his division in the UFC. His fighting style, abilities in the octagon, and his persona have all contributed to his success. Today, at UFC 286 in London, he will fight Justin Gaethje, one of the most exciting…

UFC 286: Usman Vs Edwards 3 Previewed
Tumblr media
Leon Edwards soiled greatness at UFC 278. That left kick from the depths of Hades soiled greatness. Watching the UFC fanbase celebrate what was the greatest “hail-mary” moment in MMA history, has been a testament to soiled greatness.
Kamaru Usman will still enter this bout as the favorite, and rightly so.
If you do a round-by-round analysis of their first two fights, Usman has won nearly all of them, with the 1st round of UFC 278, being one of the exceptions where Edward had the better round and made his striking advantage count.
The most concerning thing about that 1st round of UFC 278, was that Edwards managed some successful takedowns of his own, the first time Usman has ever been taken down, and the first time he has spen any time at all on the bottom-side and if Edwards can confidently stave off the takedown attempts then his chances improve dramatically.
Edwards did a great job defending himself against the cage walls as well and that kind of positional awareness is so crucial to be able to defend against because while Masvidal and Covington each had two opportunites at beating Usman, nobody has ever had a third chance, and thus a chance to really zero in on what Usman’’s strenghts are.
Another aspect of Edward’s strategy is targeting Usman’s body, Edwards landed 40% of his strikes to Kamaru’s mid section and that may turn out to more important than expected, because variation is key to exploiting his striking advantage.
Even with the stats mostly favoring Kamaru Usman, I still cannot tell you that I’m unconcerned.
youtube
Some of the things that have leaked regarding Kamaru Usman’s health, are not at all encouraging, and more and more it appears that there are very real concerns specifically with Usman’s knees and lower limbs.
Will Harris on the Joe Rogan podcast said that “Usman cannot walk on concrete given how bad the condition of his knees are”.
Kamaru Usman himself has gone on the record and stated that he stopped running a few years ago specifically because his knees are no longer durable enough, during an interview with Brendan Schaub. This is added to Usman himself on the Joe Rogan podcast in a 2019 interview, during which Usman says he fought Tyron Woodley with a broken foot.
Much concerned am I, and I also question if Usman will be able to grind Edwards down with wrestling, the way he did in their first 2 bouts. Indeed Usman has dominated the rounds in those bouts, but the style in which he did it, is one that requires endurance and a healthy body.
Leon Edwards seems to be aware and believes that this is a different Usman, with comments alluding to allowing Usman to pursue other things after the fight.
What I fear most is Usman won’t be able to win a 5 round fight like he did earlier in thier careers and that means he has to look for a finish on th egorund or via standing knockout.
Be warned Usman is a favorite by number and in name only, though I’ll be pulling for him.
