REDAN Building Expo Begins on 7th May with Launching of National Real Estate Data
Tumblr media
The Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria (REDAN) will begin this year’s Expo from 7th to 8th May at Shehu Musa Yaradua Centre, Abuja. One of the major events at the Expo’s opening on the 7th will be the highly anticipated launch of the National Real Estate Data Collation and Management Programme (NRE-DCMP), which is designed to help tackle housing problems in Nigeria, including housing deficit. NRE-DCMP was initiated by REDAN and Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to collate property price index nationwide to solve housing problems in the country. According to the body’s President, Rev. Ugochukwu Chime, the data, collated from national land administrators on pre-construction, construction and post construction activities nationwide would be hoisted on the Nigeria Mortgage Refinance Company (NMRC)’s website for public usage. “We are going to hoist the data on the website of the NMRC who actually is the key party and has done so much in the area of structural improvement to the mortgage process in Nigeria by keying into mortgage laws which they brought about." Chime bemoaned how before now there was a big misrepresentation of housing data in the country which has not really helped the sector. “I have been in different fora where ministers representing different various ministries in Nigeria outside this country were giving different data about the same issue, which is embarrassing. “We need data for planning; we need to know where we need those houses, so we organised it in such a way that the CBN agreed to work with us to tackle housing sector crisis. “The data emerged from developers profile and capacity, demand and affordability profile of the market within a given locality and household condition survey. “We went a step further to ensure that all the parties who are involved in the planning of various aspects have data for it. He said that the association collaborated with CBN, World Bank, Ministry of Power, Works and Housing, Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) , NMRC , Value Chain, NpopC, and other stakeholders. “We also collaborated with the National Bureau of Statistic (NBS), National Population Commission (NPC) to be able to have the NRE-DCMP which is a novel thing that has never happened before,” he added. He further noted that the data had input on land administration and the 37 land administration entities in Nigeria including the improvement that could be brought to bear on them. He added that the collated data included issues of mortgage law and foreclosure law as well as how to standardise operations of various institutions to ensure a developer received a standardise allocation letter. Chime explained that the collated data would also dwell on how to standardise the deed of legal mortgage and deed of assignments in various registries to ensure it’s financial acceptance. “On affordability we want to know the numbers and the people in the 774 LGAs who need the houses and their affordability reach so that we will stop the issues of having duplexes everywhere or building houses people cannot buy. “So we can now do targeted construction that can only happen when we have the data on affordability and business data to know the people who are developing the houses. “We also have housing condition which is the baseline to ascertain the condition of existing houses in the 774 local government or the 37 entities we have in 36 states and FCT. “These components are what we have gone on to do by organising the NREDCMP,” he said. According to him, the association has been able to ensure the various stakeholders have understanding of how all the data they want to work upon were collated, gathered and analyse. Why 2019 Expo Will Be Best Ever In an interview granted Housing News, the President of Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria (REDAN), Rev Ugo Chime (UC), reveals why this year's Expo will be the most improved and anticipated. This year's theme is, ‘'REAL ESTATE DEVELOPERS: THE BEDROCK FOR NATIONAL ECONOMIC STABILITY." According to him, the REDAN 2019 Expo is the third edition and it is aimed among other things to bring to floor the professional developers in the real estate and housing industry, and discuss how best they can serve as a catalyst in the development of the Nigeria economy. Other Key Activities Activities lined up includes mandatory continued professional development for participants; opportunities for the players in the industry to showcase their products; and the programme will also feature exhibition of building materials and corporate presentation of new products. This year's expo will feature many exhibitions of real estate projects across the country, it will also feature display of new building technologies, innovations in home interiors and design. The Guests of Honor The guest of honor for this year's REDAN EXPO is no other person than the Minister of Power works and housing, Mr Babatunde Raji Fashola. He will be the one to officially declare open the EXPO on the 7th of May. The Speakers at This Year's Expo? This year's lead guest speaker is no other person than Mr. Hakeen Ogunniran, who is the present Managing Director of Exima Realities. He was the former Managing Director of UBDC. He will be speaking on ““Harnessing Real Estate For Economic Development in Nigeria: Issues, Challenges and Solutions” and proposing a reform agenda. Other guest speakers include Mr. Femi Adewole, the chief Executive managing director of family home funds. Mr Akinwumi of ADB Abuja will also be delving into and speaking to us on a number of issues that will help unlock the potentials in our sector. Standard Organisation of Nigeria(SON) will also be there to educate and inform Expected benefits of attending this Expo The 2019 REDAN Expo will create an unparalleled network opportunity for stakeholders who will be participating; it will be an avenue for stakeholders and other members who are looking for opportunities to relate with Family Homes Fund -- a new establishment of federal government, to meet with the MD and get to know how they can benefit from Family Homes fund. For the first time, REDAN is collaborating with CBN and six other agencies which will be launching Real Estate Data at the opening ceremony. This year's Expo will also be attended by all the Chief Executives from Federal Mortgage Banks in Nigeria, Mortgage Finance, Family Homes Funds and others including the Federal Ministry of power works and housing. Also there will be the commencement of REDAN Initiative on Estate Endorsement, and Building Materials Endorsement, aimed at stemming quality challenges in the process and products on offer. Family Homes Funds will also be there to unveil the array of novel and innovative real estate financing products they have. Many Firms will also have their products and services on display. REDAN Expo Set to Go With the responses from people, stakeholders and partners, REDAN has assured that they are ready and good to go. The necessary logistics have been put in place and all expected participants have registered. "This year's REDAN EXPO is going to be greater and better than the previous ones. In that line, we are calling all stakeholders to give us their full support as always," Chime said. REDAN is an umbrella body of all real estate developers in the country. They’re the ones handling the supply side of the housing and construction industry. While people make demands, REDAN supplies. Read the full article

Where can I get information from?
If you decide not to collect the survey data for yourself, you can use existing sources of data. These are called secondary data because, in contrast to the primary data which you collect yourself, this dataset has been prepared by other people or organisations.
The first step is to find a good and a relevant source of data.
Official sources of data
National statistics offices
National statistical offices in each country are responsible for collecting a wide range of statistics on population, households, companies and local governments.
Official statistics for the UK are available at the Office for National Statistics. A wide range of open data related to government departments is available at data.gov.uk. The UK Department of Work and Pensions has its own dedicated Stat-Xplore portal.
These sites often aren’t the easiest to use, partly because there’s so much data available that the search functions aren’t able to keep up. However, if you’re willing to make the investment, and you know what you’re looking for, there’s an enormous wealth of data available.
Census data
Census data are also collected by national statistical offices. For the UK, you can read introductory information about the 2011 census and explore Census data via the Nomis webpage or use interactive resources.
Eurostat collects all national statistics and combines them into harmonised datasets (to make sure they are measured in the same way). They provide data for European countries and sub-national regions. Another advantage is that they work with the European Union and collect data that is important from a perspective of EU cohesion and development policy.
Resources of international bodies
The World Bank
The World Bank databank allows you to explore a large number of different features of different countries over periods you can specify. It has data on human development and poverty (such as World Development Indicators), economic policy (balance of payments, GDP, debts, international finances) and environmental changes (CO2 emissions or energy production).
You can either download data directly, or you can create reports from within the service itself. This facility has information on a huge number of different things over a very long period of time, although not all reports are available for all countries for every year. There are also high-quality tutorials that you can use to get more familiar with their tools.
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)
The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) also provides information that covers different countries and different time periods on its data site, and you can interact with them at its stat sites. It’s not as exhaustive as the World Bank, as it mainly addresses data for countries that are members of the OECD rather than the whole world. However, because of this, a lot of the available data is extremely detailed and thorough, and can helpfully be compared over time. It gives access to demographic and societal data such as migration and population statistics, social protection and well-being, science and technology patents.
The United Nations
UN data gathers links to other databases and data provided by UN specialised agencies, such as:
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO)
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)
The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO)
The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO)
International Labour Organisation (ILO)
The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO)
The numerous databases cover a wide range of themes including Agriculture, Crime, Education, Employment, Energy, Environment, Health, HIV/AIDS, Human Development, Industry, Information and Communication Technology, National Accounts, Population, Refugees, Tourism, Trade, as well as the Millennium Development Goals indicators.
New sources of data are gathered by UN Big Data Project inventory.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF)
If you’re interested in where the money goes, what is exported and imported, how the economy is doing in countries and how many ATMs there are per square km the International Monetary Fund (IMF) publish this type of financial data. It also has a nice data mapper where you can visualise your statistics.
Survey companies
Have you read any survey results in the media which look suspicious? You can check them out by going straight to the source. Survey companies publish reports on their surveys which contain a summary of the methods and a proper interpretation of the statistical data.
The major international survey companies are:
Ipsos Mori
Kantar TNS Global
Yougov (more UK-based than other)
Gallup (more US-based than other)
Pew Research Centre
Data archives
Data police
data.police.uk is a site that contains open data about crime and policing in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. It’s not always the most user-friendly thing to use, but there’s a huge amount of data that can be wrangled if you’re comfortable with manipulating data in CSV format.
The UK Data Service
If you’re not sure which data source to use, you can check existing data archives and repositories. For example, the UK Data Service provides a single point of access to a wide range of data sources, including large-scale government-funded surveys, census data, major UK longitudinal surveys, multi-national aggregate databanks, business microdata and multimedia data sources.
New data repositories in the UK:
Administrative Research Data Network (ARDN) offers access to tax, security, educational attainment, court and health records.
Urban Big Data Centre (UBDC) collects geospatial, housing and transport data for cities.
Consumer Data Research Centre (CDRC) collects sales, reward cards and other market research data.
Online resources
Finally, there are lots of online sources and web pages which will allow you to do your own analysis of data without the need for specialist software.
For example:
Google Trends to get a feeling how your research problem is ‘trending’.
British Social Attitudes (BSA) Information System
You have to register to get access to more data and analyse them via webpage
The British Election Study (BES) ‘Data Playground’
European Social Survey Online Analysis
Centre for Comparative European Survey Data Information System where you can explore surveys results from major European surveys.

Celebrating 10 years of the Hands Up Scotland Survey
This year, our Hands Up Scotland Survey (HUSS) celebrates its 10th anniversary of providing reliable annual information on children's mode of travel to school in Scotland. It also marks its sixth year of being an official statistic in Scotland. In this blog, we take a look back at how the Hands Up Scotland survey has developed over the years, and further look into how HUSS data has been widely recognised and used in a range of interesting data requests, further analyses and studies.
Over the past decade, the Hands Up Scotland Survey has established itself as the largest national dataset on children's school travel in Scotland. Starting in 2008, the survey has grown year on year, and now over half a million children in Scotland participate in the survey.
Data from the survey enables delivery organisations, research bodies, government departments and individual schools to build a more accurate picture of pupils's daily travel habits to and from school. 2017 saw the highest ever overall number of children taking part in the survey, due to a huge increase in nursery schools participating this year.
The 2017 results have revealed a continuing decline in walking to school, a national trend that has been continuing since the survey began in 2008. This is in contrast to an increase in cycling across the country which has increased by 0.1 percentage points year on year since 2014.
Active travel overall is still the most frequently reported mode of travelling to school in Scotland. Of the 48.8% of pupils who said they normally get to school in an active way, 42.3% said they walked, 3.7% said they used their bikes and 2.8% said they arrived on scooter, or skated to school. 16.5% of pupils said they normally traveled by bus, and 24.5% said they traveled by car or taxi (22.8% and 1.6% respectively). 9.7% said they commuted via park and stride.
Reach and uptake of HUSS data
HUSS data has been used by many partners over the years, from active travel organisations such as Cycling Scotland and Living Streets and to national institutions such as NHS Scotland, to measure the success of their programmes and build a clearer picture of travel patterns to school across Scotland.
Data has also been used by local authorities across Scotland to inform their Active Travel Plans and cited in a number of research studies, including the Glasgow Centre for Population Health's paper on Travel To School in Glasgow (2017) and a paper by Systra, Wellside Research and Sustrans on Tackling the School Run (2017).
Within just the past two years, the Sustrans' Hands Up Scotland team have received 19 external data requests for school level data. These have included requests from environmental trusts, transport planners, charities, parent councils, universities and consultancies.
The following case studies show just some of the ways the data has benefitted other programmes from helping them measure their impact on active travel and track the progress of active travel in school-aged children across Scotland.
Investigating active travel to school in Scotland: A forthcoming study from Sustrans and the Urban Big Data Centre and Sustrans
Sustrans successfully applied for a research Fellowship at the Urban Big Data Centre (UBDC), part of the University of Glasgow, between May and September 2017.
In partnership with UBDC, Sustrans investigated Hands Up Scotland Survey data alongside datasets on school-level behaviour change interventions, socio-economic variables and spatial characteristics between 2014 and 2016.
The aim of the research was to understand the impact of behaviour change interventions on active travel to school across Scotland and how this might vary. The Hands Up Scotland Survey provided a robust dataset on how pupils travel to school across Scotland and, alongside other datasets obtained through the Fellowship, enabled this study to take place.
The research is important to organisations, research bodies and government departments wanting to understand how best to influence active travel to school. This study is scheduled to be published later this year.
Using HUSS as an indicator for the children and young peoples health profile: The Scottish Public Health Observatory
The Scotland Public Health Observatory used HUSS to inform their recently developed children and young people's health profile.
This profile presents data from a wide variety of sources to give an overview on how safe, healthy, achieving, nurtured, active, respected, responsible and included children in Scotland are. It displays the wide sources and indicators on interactive maps to give users an overview of children's health and its wider determinants at a local authority level. The tool also allows comparisons to be made with the Scottish average or other specified area.
Data from HUSS surveys spanning 2008 to 2016 was used to illustrate and monitor how physically active Scottish children are. It also further reinforces the role of school travel as a daily chance for children to be physically active which can further contribute towards their overall health and wellbeing.
The tool also offers service providers, planners and policy makers with nationally comparable information to improve the understanding of health issues relating to people in Scotland, and sets these in a national context to take action to improve the health of communities. The HUSS data proved to be a valuable dataset included in the new profile and is used by all those working to improve the health and wellbeing of children and young people across Scotland.
Cycling Scotland's Cycle Friendly School Award Programme
Cycling Scotland have used our HUSS data for their Cycle Friendly School Award Programme.
This programme supports more children to enjoy the benefits of cycling within a school and encourages pupils to ride their bikes more often. The award recognises the role played by parents, teachers and volunteers to increasing the level of cycling in schools.
Participation in HUSS also forms one of the criteria for the Cycle Friendly Primary and Secondary School awards. They encourage schools to record baseline cycling rates and track these throughout the school year.
The findings from HUSS were used to form a baseline of participation rates before and after a Cycle Friendly intervention within a school as well as to measure overall increases or decreases in cycling rates and in different sub groups (urban/rural, regional and local authority). Cycling Scotland also used our data to compare levels of active travel in Cycle Friendly Primary Schools, with overall levels of active travel for the local authority area.
Cycling Scotland’s initial findings using HUSS were that Cycle Friendly Primary schools demonstrate a 2% increase (5.24% vs 7.34%) in pupils cycling.
Future uses of the Hands Up Scotland Survey data
By showing levels of active travel (walking, cycling, scootering or skating) to schools across Scotland, Our Hands Up Scotland Survey data can be used to examine the health and lifestyle choices of pupils.
It can also be used to help inform placemaking and road safety interventions and assist work to help local communities become safer and healthier places to live. HUSS data can also be used to investigate progress towards ‘reducing our greenhouse gas emissions, through evidencing private motorised travel (car and taxi) to school.
The Scottish Government’s 2018-19 Programme for Government sets out the vision to build an Active Nation, boosting investment in walking and cycling and putting active travel at the heart of transport planning.
The Hands Up Scotland 2017 data is likely to play a critical role in marking the baseline for rates of active, sustainable and motorised travel and future years of HUSS data will be important for assessing progress against this vision.
We also hope to see the continued use of HUSS data by other organisations, partners and research bodies to help measure the success of programmes as well as to inform planning and delivery of interventions aimed at reaching the Scottish Government's objectives of a Healthier, Safer and Stronger and Greener Scotland.

When you get this, you have to answer with 5 things you like about yourself, publicly. Then, send this ask to 10 of your followers (non-negotiable, positivity is cool!) 🌟
Pues 5 cosas…
