Lackawanna and Erie Lackawanna
flickr
Lackawanna and Erie Lackawanna por R. Donald Winship Por Flickr: Hoboken, NJ Delaware Lackawanna & Western MU car 2454 and Erie Lackawanna U34CH 3372 sit on static display in Hoboken as part of an event celebrating both the 45th anniversary of NJ Transit and the 40th anniversary of the re-electrification of the former Lacakwanna electric lines. #2454, which is part of the Whippany Railway Museum's collection, was built in 1912 as a subscription car, providing improved accommodations to members of a private commuter club. The car was rebuilt to operate as part of electric multiple unit operation in tandem with powered cars in 1930. The original electrification of the territory was 3000 volts direct current overhead wire, a very unusual arrangement that made the lines incompatible with more modern AC equipment. Car 2454 (by then renumbered as 3454) led the final Hoboken to Dover run of the old MU cars on August 24, 1984, prior to the re-electrification of the line under contemporary 25KV AC standards. U34CH #3372, last survivor of its class and now owned by the United Rail Historical Society of New Jersey, was a pioneer in the modernization of diesel commuter services on the former Erie and Lackawanna Railroad lines, and eventually all diesel commuter service in the state. The GE U34CH is a passenger variation of the common U36C that was purchased by the NJDOT on behalf of the Erie Lackawanna Railroad in 1970. These locomotives were accompanied by Pullman-Standard "Dieseliner" cars, which provided both air conditioning and collectively allowed for the "push-pull" operation (where the train would operate in one direction with the locomotive remotely controlled from a cab car) to be introduced on the EL. These units were delivered in a blue and silver paint scheme to highlight their NJDOT ownership. It was inherited by NJ Transit, which retired it in 1994. After having been cosmetically restored in 2023, continued work on its prime mover would enable it to be publicly fired up a couple weeks after this photo was taken. Their eventual goal is to restore it to operation, allowing it to pull excursion trains. SmugMug: donaldwinship.smugmug.com/Rail-Photography/i-9JBG8gw

Railnews Review 2023: Iconic Alco PA Locomotive Heads East For Preservation
In New Jersey, a U34CH was cosmetically restored and an operational restoration moved forward. … Two of the PAs remain south of the border in museums.

Looking exactly the same as it did in its Erie Lackwanna days, a set of Pullman Standard Dieseliner Push Pulls cars and a GE U34CH head north on a cloudy day in Ridgewood. As most know, these cars were re-branded as Comet cars and then, even later, Comet 1s, but when being designed they were called Dieseliners and were then just PushPulls when delivered. U34CH Homecoming por Erie Limited Por Flickr: The former Erie Lackawanna/NJ DOT U34CH recently restored by the URHS in Boonton, NJ shares the spotlight with one of Bennett Levin's Pennsylvania Railroad E8As. The event was NJ Transit's "Meet the Heritage Fleet" event at Hoboken Terminal. The weather couldn't be better and the U34CH looked right at home in the terminal where it spent over two decades in service. EL 3372 U34CH PRR 5711 E8A

Pretty Ugly Thing

Pretty Ugly Thing por Don Kalkman Por Flickr: Bombardier ALP45-DP 4535 was quietly departing Secaucus with an outbound train out of Hoboken on a sunny warm evening in Jersey. The dual mode motors may not look like much, but they do the job. Just not as stylishly or as noisily as a GE U34CH.

NJ DOT Reunion por Erie Limited Por Flickr: One more look at the NJ DOT-era which was recreated in Boonton during the URHS open house event. The rain only helped to make both units appear even shinier. The missing window on 3372's cab door is obvious from this angle. EL 3372 U34CH (ex-NJTR 4172) NJTR 4101 GP40PH-2 (ex-CNJ 3672)

3372 Returns Home
flickr
3372 Returns Home por Erie Limited Por Flickr: The star of NJ Transit's "Meet the Heritage Fleet" event at Hoboken Terminal was not actually a current NJ Transit locomotive. "Erie Lackawanna" U34CH 3372 is in the process of being restored to operating condition by the URHS in Boonton, NJ. Cosmetic restoration was (mostly) completed a little over a week prior to this event. Regardless, 3372 looks as good as it did in April 1971 when it was rolled off the GE assembly line at Erie, PA. It served commuters via this terminal for over two decades before retirement. A bit of historical nitpicking...the terminal's clock tower was not yet restored during the service life of the U34CH and would only (re)appear roughly 15 years after their retirement in 1994. In the end who really cares, 3372 looked great on home rails again. EL 3372 U34CH

A bit of sunlight makes its way through the Hoboken trainshed to illuminate a pair of hulking GE U34CHs that await their next trip to the suburbs. The 32 U34CHs built for the Erie Lackawanna and later operated by NJ Transit ruled diesel runs out of Hoboken for a generation. September, 1971
