In 1977 it was revealed that random American citizens were abducted & tortured for research by the CIA. Project MK Ultra was the code name for a series of covert activities beginning in the early 1950’s, similarly to those that occurred in Jonestown.

Following the defeat of Germany in 1945, the predecessor to the CIA, the OSS: Office of Strategic Services recruited Nazi doctores and scientists for employment by the United States under the directions and supervision of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The operation was called Paperclip. Operation Paperclip was the recruitment of German doctors and scientists who were experts in a wide array of sciences, ranging from rocketry to torture.

Contrary to false history and propaganda, Josef Mengele was indeed among one of the doctors recruited under Paperclip.

Several programs were started which focused on the effects of drugs for interrogation purposes. The United States Navy started Project Chatter in 1947 and focused on identifying and testing the use of drugs on human and animal subjects.

Under control of the intelligence divisions of the Army, Air Force, Navy, and FBI was another operation called Project Artichoke. Project Artichoke focused on the use of hypnosis, forced morphine addiction, and the use of other chemicals and methods.

Project Artichoke was renamed MK-Ultra which initially began human experimentation on CIA employees and military personnel, but soon began to include prostitutes, the mentally ill and abducted American & Canadian citizens.

Operation Midnight Climax was a project operating under the banner of MK-Ultra, which consisted of a web of CIA-run safe houses in San Francisco, Marin, and New York.

Prostitutes on the CIA payroll were paid to lure clients to these safe houses, where the men would be drugged and monitored behind one way glass. This method of human experimentation was desired because the victims, when released, would be too embarrassed to disclose the events.

In 1973, CIA director Richard Helms ordered the destruction of all documents pertaining to MK-Ultra. Due to the destruction of these records, it is difficult or impossible to perform additional research into MK-Ultra or the 150 individually funded sub-projects that operated under the MK-Ultra banner.

In 1974 The New York Times reported the CIA conducted illegal domestic activities, including experiments on U.S. citizens, which prompted Congress to intervene and conduct investigations.

The Church Committee and Rockefeller Commission both released reports in 1975 that revealed that the CIA and Department of Defense conducted experiments on citizens without their consent.

The Church Committee concluded that “prior consent was obviously not obtained from any of the subjects. How could MK ULTRA mind control not have not even been considered in the case of Jonestown since cults are breeding grounds for brainwashing and the fact thatJones used CIA MK ULTRA torture techniques to the letter.

Did Jim Jones have the manual? Or was he himself an operative?

All indications identify Jim Jones as both a programmer and an MK ULTRA Manchurian candidate. The controlled mass media have created a myth, the legend of Jonestown.

Carved out of the jungles of Guyana on the northeast coast of South America, a fanatical group of followers of the Rev. Jim Jones, were led to the jungles of South America to get away from the oppression of life in America.

Reports that Jones’ followers willingly followed their leader in a revolutionary mass suicide by sipping purple Kool-Aid laced cyanide cocktails. Another myth that has become a part of pop-cult-ure: Drink the cool-aid. Jonestown has been inexorably linked to that infamous false phrase.

The Kool Aid pop-cult-ural application is actually a huge deception. It is time to smash the myth and expose the immutable facts of a Black Op cover-up at Jonestown.

U.S. Army spokesmen quickly announced no autopsies were needed stating that the cause of death was not an issue in the case.

Despite the Black-Op coverup, Dr. C. Leslie Mootoo, the top Guyanese pathologist, who examined the bodies found fresh needle marks at the back of the left shoulder blades on 80 to 90 percent of the victims. Others were strangled or shot. Of course, this fact did not make the evening news.

A surviving witness stated that resisters were forced by armed guards to comply. Many were shot. Dr. Mootoo’s opinion, and that of the Guyanese grand jury investigating Jonestown, was that all but three were murdered by “persons unknown.” Of these three, only two of which were suicides.

There is more. Much more.

On November 18 1978, it was reported that 913 people committed suicide in Jonestown. The suicide hoax is merely the beginning of the deception to cover up the MK ULTRA mind control black operation.

The original death count was 408. Initial reports noted that an additional 700 fled into the jungle. Soon after, the final death toll was changed to 913, noting the large error was due to bodies being stacked on top of one another.

Of the 150 photos taken of the massacre, not one shows any body lying under any others. Those who first worked on the bodies, to release the gasses of decay, had to puncture the dead, making it unlikely that they missed anyone.

How could 408 bodies, 82 of them children cover 505 others? With little exception, pictures show the dead in neat rows, face down. The pictures also expose drag marks leading to the bodies, indicating that victims were murdered elsewhere and placed there after death.

These facts have lead to a more likely conclusion: 408 was indeed the correct original body count. The other 505 were hunted down and slaughtered, then dragged back. But by who?

And why were American officials giving such deceptive answers about Jonestown? Because Jim Jones, an enigmatic Bible-thumping charlatan faith healer who according to his landlady, “used the Bible instead of a gun” had deep ties to the CIA. The evidence of this is overwhelming.

The CIA connection begins with Jones’ childhood friend Dan Mitrione who was the local police chief in the early days of Jones’s “ministry” in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Mitrione later entered the International Police Academy, a CIA front for training in torture and counterinsurgency techniques that were later used at Jonestown.

In 1961, depite being broke, Jones somehow found the funds to travel to Brazil. Wouldn’t you know that Dan Mitrione was there as well, practicing his CIA torture and assassination training on kidnapped beggars.

(Mitrione was himself later kidnapped and murdered by guerrillas in Uruguay.)

Jim Jones went to live in Brazil with his wife and made several visits to the City of Belo Horizonte where the CIA’s Brazilian headquarters was located and where Dan Mitrione resided.

During this time Jim Jones adopted as many as 150 foster children. Most were actually sent to the People’s Temple by court order. Many of these children were horribly abused and traumatized in sadistic CIA mind control experiments.

As mentioned, the Temple had a strong associations with World Vision and a mercenary rebel army backed by the CIA called UNITA.

If you haven’t connected all the dots yet, don’t worry there are many more links exposing the truth about Jim Jones. He was involved in the U.S. Office of Naval Intelligence. The U.S. embassy even provided him with transportation, groceries, and a large home. He was an asset. An operative.

His close friendship with Mitrione and the CIA’s funding of “ministries” in Latin America amplifies the fact that Jim Jones was an obvious U.S. intelligence asset as early as 1961.

According to a neighbor at that time, Jones, had no money but “lived like a rich man.” Soon after the JFK assassination, Jones returned to the states with $10,000.

Where did Jones, a broke pastor get these funds? Evidence leads to the CIA Skull and Bones Brotherhood. The Brotherhood of Death.

Despite his ultra right-wing background, Jones suddenly declared himself a liberal socialist — and called himself a reincarnation of both Jesus Christ and Lenin. For people to follow this man shows how easily they can be manipulated.

Sadly, much social control has been applied to Our world in both politics and pop-culture. The insanity is, that the Reverend Jim Jones would be considered a hero today by most liberals for his New Age Utopian philosophies and desire to homogenize society, erasing the barriers of race and sexual orientation. He would be seen as a hero, if not for the dark truth behind the lie.

Utopia is hell. Enslavement. Suffering. Torment.

Like with all liberal issues, the veneer is quite different than the results. The devil is in the details.

Jim Jones took everything he could from his liberal multi-racial followers. He fleeced them good. From their welfare and social security checks to properties and bank accounts. Using extortion, blackmail, torture and psychological warfare to shear his flock of their assets and worldly possessions for the perceived betterment of all in the collectivist Utopian society created by Jones.

By 1965, Jones had formed the first People’s Temple in Ukiah, California. He also set up Happy Havens Rest Home, which was a front for MK ULTRA experiments.

His totalitarian socialism was eagerly endorsed by the elite, but a cloud of suspicion began to gather around the People’s Temple. A church that was staffed by jack-booted Nazi-esque armed thugs dressed in black SS styled uniforms started raising some eyebrows.

Without proper licensing or trained personnel, Jones drew in prisoners, the elderly, people from mental institutions. Of course, he was not arrested, rather he himself was fostered. . . by the CIA.

Among those who contacted Jones were “missionaries” from World Vision, an international evangelical order that was a front group for the CIA.

Jones’ advisors included a mercenary from UNITA, the CIA-backed Angola army.

Family of U.C. Berkeley chemist Dr. Laurence Laird Layton were also involved. Dr. Layton had worked on the Manhattan Project. Dr. Layton was also chief of the Army’s Chemical Warfare Division in the early 1950’s, where the seeds of Project Artichoke and MK ULTRA were sown.

Fewer Pets Qualify To Fly With Passengers On U.S. Planes, According To New Ruling

There is no doubt that furry friends can be highly therapeutic, but not all are eligible as service dogs—a distinction that will become painfully clear when the flying public begins to travel routinely again post-pandemic. In a change of policy, the Department of Transportation (DOT) announced that only designated service dogs will be allowed to accompany passengers on flights starting next month. The federal ruling reclassifying emotional support animals (ESA’s) as pets (now, not allowed on flights) won’t be a surprise. The DOT reports receiving 15,000 opinions during the period open for public comment.

But during a pandemic in which health mandates are openly flouted and Americans, unable to connect with family and friends, have found deep comfort in pets, the implications of the ruling are huge.

The problem is that if you aren’t steeped in the finer points of distinguishing a psychiatric service dog from an ESA, the distinction may either be lost on you—or infuriate you. And if you are a disabled person who counts on a service animal for safety and independence, the nuances of the new law will also need review. There is some language about breeds and respectful questioning of passengers to protect disabled travelers from being interrogated or turned away.

The ADA defines a service animal as a dog that is “individually trained” to “perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability.” Tasks must be a clear service. “A seizure dog is a dog that has been trained (or has learned) to respond to a seizure in someone who has epilepsy,” according to the Epilepsy Foundation.

A service dog may also provide emotional support. Paws For a Cause, for example, trains dogs to be constant companions to autistic children.

A doctor’s note, no matter how official it seems, will not qualify an ESA as a service dog. ESA’s are essential to the people who use them and it will be a while before the full effect of this ruling affects their travel plans.

What some flight attendants called a “Noah’s Ark” in the air, where all types of creatures big and small— birds, pigs, miniature horses and rabbits—boarded with their owners, are over.

Defining Need Gets Blurred

Claims of pets being trained medical companions got out of hand several years ago, undermining the trust of the airline industry and putting people with a true medical need to have a pet as an aide in a precarious position. In 2018, airlines reported that requests for emotional support pets on airlines rose more than 75%, and not coincidentally, reports of bad pet behavior on planes also rose. According to a corporate statement that year, “Delta’s updated policy follows an 84% increase in reported incidents involving service and support animals (2016-2017), including urination/defecation, biting and even a widely reported attack by a 50-pound dog.” United Airlines reported carrying 76,000 emotional support animals in 2017, a steep increase from years past.

The New Normal for Flyers

Just two years later, we are living in a completely new normal, one in which a limit on any type of emotional support may seem like yet another highly unwelcome change. “I feel for dog owners who do not want to put their dogs into the cargo hold of an airplane, it’s not safe for the dogs and feels cruel given the freezing temperatures and total darkness,” said Brian Kelly, CEO and founder of the travel advice site, The Points Guy. But Kelly said, “too many people abused the existing rules for traveling with animals, leading even to passengers and crew members getting hurt. This made things harder for those who were traveling with a legitimate service animal for legitimate reasons.”

John Morris, blogger, disability advocate and founder of Wheelchairtravel.org said that “despite the fact that there was abuse, with some nondisabled people falsely representing their pets as emotional support animals, new restrictions on the carriage of those animals are likely to cause problems for those who have a legitimate need for the companionship of an emotional support animal.

Accepting That Rules Change

The history of pets on flights may surprise you. In the past, it’s true that dogs, cats and, yes, miniature horses were given top priority as service animals. Now, the current rule reserves these spots for dogs only.

Morris is hopeful that the new documentation requirements for traditional service dogs will not be too significant a barrier to disabled people who must travel with a service animal. The Department of Transportation, he says, seems to have struck a reasonable balance after consultation with the disability community and industry stakeholders.

Kelly is also hopeful that the new rules from the DOT will still allow those with true physical or mental health needs to travel with their service animals and hope the industry will change. “There’s no doubt that the vast majority of pet owners would pay a premium to keep their pets safe while traveling, and I’d love to see airlines come up with innovative methods and guidelines safely allow people to travel with their furry friends,” says Kelly.

To reduce the stress of traveling as much as possible, educate yourself on the specifics of the airline you are flying. There are still some foggy areas. Delta, Southwest and others are still reviewing their policies, but by law, they are not required to accommodate nonservice animals. According to New Mobility magazine, people with disabilities plan on traveling, even through the pandemic, although probably staying closer to home and using a wide array of customizable vehicles.

Finding Comfort in Clarity

The updated service animal rules will require airlines to treat psychiatric service animals the same as other service animals. In exchange, the owner must provide documentation created by the Transportation Department. The forms are meant to ensure that owners are bringing pets that are healthy and well trained. If you are traveling over the holidays, check the current rules including a video with closed captioning.

Passengers with emotional support pets I spoke with were understanding. One snowbird in route to Florida will be sitting with their dog on their lap on a long drive down the East coast. Others said frankly it’s not an issue for them. Their family and beloved pet are staying put for the holidays, out of a fear of Covid-19, lack of funds or both.

Saving Your Mental Energy

Of course, if you are dead set on finding a shortcut or workaround, you will likely find yourself typing in ‘service dog certification’ in your browser’s search area. Don’t, say experts. Your best bet is to know the current rules and follow them using the DOT guidelines. Your first red flag should be that most of these sites make no reference to the updated rules. The logos are also strikingly similar to the official ADA service dog certification, which can be confusing. Avoid the rabbit hole. By falling into what may be a fraudulent scheme, you are making it more difficult for people with qualified service animals to travel without disruption and repeated questioning.

Canines in the Service of Maritime Security

The United States Coast Guard has a long history of military working animals. During the early years of World War II, German spies landed on East Coast beaches and enemy subs were sighted on East and West coasts. These incidents led to the establishment of Coast Guard beach patrols and, by August 1942, the first Coast Guard dog was on patrol. During the war, 2,000 dogs participated in beach patrols alongside their Coast Guard handlers.

In the 1990s, there were several Coast Guard canine teams in service. These teams were located at Station Sandy Hook, New Jersey, and Station South Padre Island, Texas, and used mainly for narcotics detection. In addition, there was a narcotic detection canine stationed at the Law Enforcement Detachment (LEDET) in Miami, Florida. Over the years, the Coast Guard’s narcotics detection canine program has remained relatively small. Normally, Coast Guard units find narcotics on the order of hundreds of pounds. With drug quantities of this scale, there’s no need for a dog, because humans can visually locate the drugs.

As new mission threats have evolved, the Coast Guard’s canine team capability has also evolved. The modern Coast Guard Canine Explosive Detection Program was initiated as a result of the September 11th terrorist attacks. The Coast Guard was tasked with a variety of Maritime Homeland Security missions, which included high-capacity vessel safety and security for cruise ships and ferries and the best tool for this job is an explosive detection canine team. Due to the canine’s unique ability to detect even the smallest amount of explosives, Coast Guard units could effectively screen vessels before and after they left port. Thus, the modern Coast Guard Canine Program was born.

The service’s preference of dog breed for law enforcement and substance detection mission has changed through the years. During World War II, the Coast Guard used mostly Doberman Pinschers; however, like other military branches, the Coast Guard often received dogs from civilians who gave up pets for the war effort. Therefore, the service used a variety of breeds for its beach patrol in the early days of the program. The breeds first used in the modern Coast Guard Canine Program were Labrador Retrievers; however, as the science of canine capabilities has progressed, the service has added specific breeds, such as German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, German Short Haired Pointers and Vizslas.

Coast Guard canine handlers are also a special breed. Candidates must be Maritime Enforcement Specialists of the highest caliber with an enlisted rank of at least a second-class petty officer. Members that apply must receive a positive endorsement from their commanding officer and a thorough screening by headquarters. Selectees must also dedicate six years to the service to ensure they are committed to the demands of this highly sought after position.

In 2003, the Coast Guard initiated the modern Canine Program with 12 teams at Auburn University, in Alabama. In 2005, the program began training alongside its Department of Homeland Security partners at the Customs and Border Protection school in Front Royal, Virginia. In 2011, Coast Guard canine teams began receiving their initial training through the Transportation and Security Administration’s National Explosive Detection Canine Program, at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

For a canine team, the program begins with a 12-week course that instructs handlers on caring for and training their canine partners. Handlers and their dogs are trained to detect explosive odors on vessels, aircraft, railroad cars, automobiles, luggage, packages, and airline terminals. To graduate, the teams must achieve a 100 percent odor detection rating during a final evaluation in all search areas. After graduation, the teams return to their units where they develop specialized skills required by their respective ports. Handlers are also required to obtain qualifications in Emergency Vehicle Operations, Boarding Officer Certified Ashore, Canine Tactical Combat Casualty Care, and other certifications required by the Maritime Enforcement Specialist rating.

Coast Guard canine teams maintain specialized skills to do their part in the Maritime Homeland Security mission set. In addition to deploying in austere environments far offshore, the canines must perform searches in tight spaces and, sometimes, loud engine rooms. In addition to these shipboard challenges, the canines must ascend and descend ladders to gain access to compartments deep inside vessels. Assuring that canines can search effectively in these environments takes months of training for the dogs and handlers.

Vertical Delivery (VDEL) is the capability to deploy Canine Explosive Detection Teams (CEDTs) to vessels offshore via helicopter. This capability sets them apart from their Department of Homeland Security counterparts by enabling the Coast Guard teams to quickly and safely interdict vessels at sea. This capability also allows Coast Guard operational commanders to ensure the safety of U.S. ports by extending their reach hundreds of miles offshore from American ports.

VDEL from a helicopter requires complete trust between the handler and his canine partner. This trust is built over years. During these years, the canine learns that the handler will not endanger them unless absolutely necessary to preserve human life. Before a canine team can be deployed from a helicopter, the handler has to acclimate his canine partner to the sights, sounds and smells of a loud airborne asset. Additionally, after qualifying, the teams must train regularly for operational readiness and deployment at any time.

In addition to their helicopter delivery capability, the teams perform Vessel-to-Vessel Hoisting. Coast Guard canine handlers become subject matter experts in the practice of hoisting their canine partners from one vessel to another while underway. Again, the teams conduct rigorous training under dangerous conditions, including night-time and inclement weather deployments to ensure readiness for this vital mission.

CEDTs also support local, state and federal agencies during National Special Security Events, large public events, and as VIP protective services. Coast Guard CEDTs have ensured the security of thousands of people through explosives detection at such events as the Super Bowl, Rose Bowl Game and Parade, and Navy Fleet Week events. Working alongside their U.S. Secret Service partners, Coast Guard canine teams have also ensured the safety of diplomats, kings, first ladies and presidents, at such events as the State of the Union Address, United Nations General Assembly, and Democratic and Republican National Conventions.

One hallmark of the Coast Guard Canine Program is the policy allowing handlers to take their canine partners home with them. Other military services’ canine teams require their dogs to live in kennels for the duration of their service. The fact that Coast Guard canines live with their handlers greatly strengthens the trust vital to the success of the team when conducting high-risk missions.

Today’s Coast Guard has 18 globally deployable CEDTs. They are assigned to the service’s Maritime Safety and Security Teams (MSSTs) and Maritime Security and Response Teams (MSRTs) strategically positioned throughout the United States. These highly-trained canine teams are capable of deploying from helicopters and watercraft to meet a variety of onshore and offshore threats.

Throughout its history, the Coast Guard Canine Program has adapted and evolved to the changing times much like the Coast Guard. The canines and handlers remain just as critical to our national security today as they did when the first dogs went into service in World War II.

TRAVELING WITH YOUR DOG

Why leave your dog at home when you can take him with you? From car rides to air travel, here’s how to keep your pet safe and happy when you’re on the go.

Car Rides

I’ve driven all over the United States with my dogs, and they have come to accept the car as an extension of our house. All of my dogs always hop into the car and relax immediately. However, it’s important to take steps to make sure your dog is comfortable during car rides:

As always, safety first. Never let your dog sit in the passenger seat—if the airbag goes off, it can kill him. Instead, use a crate in the back of the car, which is the safest way to transport your pet. Just make sure you’ve introduced the crate properly and that your dog is comfortable with it before you head out on a long car trip. Another option: a special doggy booster seat or harness that attaches to the seat belt in the back of the car. You can find these at pet supply stores and through online retailers.

Just like humans, dogs can get carsick—especially puppies or young dogs, because their inner ears haven’t fully developed yet. Also, adult dogs who haven’t traveled much in a car might get nauseous because of motion sickness or anxiety about the ride. Take precautions such as not feeding your dog a big meal right before getting in the car and making sure you bring towels or an old blanket so that if he does get sick, cleanup will be a lot easier.

Your dog is more likely to relax during a three-hour car ride if he’s already been acclimated to the car for ten to twenty minutes at a time. Gradually increase the time so that he’ll more easily adjust to a long car ride. Also, if you take him in the car only when he’s going to the vet or the groomer, he may have a negative association with it. The more experiences your dog has with going to a happy place, like the park or a pet supply store, the more eagerly he’ll get in the car.

During your road trip, plan on stopping at least every three to four hours (more often if your dog is young or very small). Let your dog play some fetch or take an extended walk. You need to stretch your legs and use the bathroom—and so does your dog.

Never leave your dog unattended in a car. Because temperatures in a closed car can quickly soar in warm months and can plummet in cold ones, many dogs have died when left even for just a few minutes. Also, I wouldn’t risk it—lots of dogs are snatched when left unattended.

As tempting as it is, don’t let your dog stick his entire head out the window while you’re driving. He can get hit with foreign objects, flying debris, and dust particles. Also, his ears can suffer damage from flopping in the wind, his eyes can suffer abrasions, or he could fall out of the car altogether. Instead, crack the window open a bit so he can enjoy all the fascinating and different smells during the journey. Hey, for them that’s half the fun!

Air Travel

Small dogs are allowed to fly in the cabin on many commercial airlines if they can fit in a travel case and under the seat in front of you. Transportation Department officials told reporters today they proposed the changes to improve in-flight safety, because a lot of passengers are abusing the system. As the number of in-flight 'support animal' attacks show, some jerks really are dragging on board pets with no training.

Current rules do not require any training for emotional-support animals. However, airlines can demand that the animal’s owner show them a medical professional’s note saying they need the animal for support. The proposed rules would prohibit airlines from banning particular types of dog breeds if the animal qualifies as a service dog, although they could refuse to board an individual dog they deem a threat. Delta Air Lines, which bans pit bulls, said it is studying the proposal.

The paperwork they're now requiring is actually a specific form from the DOT basically just requiring the handler to sign off that their dog is task trained, PA trained, healthy, housebroken, etc. Just one page the handler fills out and signs, not a doctor's note.

I don’t know if anyone else has seen this yet, but here we go. This was on my Facebook today December 2nd, 2020. Time for opinions.

If you read the article the ruling states that all “Service Animals” must be “a dog that is trained to specifically to help with its handlers disabilities”. They will allow “Psychiatric Service Dogs that help with mental disabilities”. However, emotional support dogs/animals will have to stay at home according to the article. They have also given airlines the right to question handlers on the service, training, and temperament of the dogs. And if any dog shows aggressive behavior airlines have the right to ban you from the flight. The last and most questionable thing the ruling allows is that airlines have the right to request “paperwork” on your service dog with 48 hours notice. ____________________________________ I consider this ruling a massive win for the community. There are some flaws as with anything. However, when people get hurt drastic measures have to be made. I am very sorry for the people who do need their ESA’s to function, however you can pay to keep cats/small dogs in a carrier with you. Or if you truly need a psychiatric SD and your dog is very well trained, talk to your doctor and consider task training. As for airlines requiring paperwork, getting a letter from doctors stating the need for an SD should be well enough. I already have one for my landlord and the airlines shouldn’t require anything else except for vaccines I would think. What is your opinion? Please keep comments nice. The topics of this week’s readings were Aquatic Biodiversity Loss/Extinction and Soil, Agriculture and Food, all of which are being impacted in one way or another by the unsustainable use and depletion of natural capital and ecosystem services. (Prof’s PowerPoint). Miller’s Chapter 11: Sustaining Aquatic Biodiversity addresses how aquatic species are threatened by human activity (Miller 2012, 251). Although we have only managed to explore roughly 5% of the oceans and only 1% of its life forms, scientists have detected three patterns that occur in the ocean: (1) Most marine biodiversity is concentrated in coral reefs and estuaries, as well as the ocean floor, (2) Biodiversity tends to be higher near coasts than open water “because of the greater variety of producers and habitats in coastal areas,” (3) Biodiversity is higher towards the bottom of the ocean as opposed to its surface again because of the array of habitats as well as the availability of more diverse sources of food (Miller 2012, 251). Coastal activity is particularly detrimental to oceans; for example, coral reefs are an essential safe haven for approximately 90% of fish species yet almost ⅕ of the world’s reefs have been destroyed by pollution and acidification, as well as development of the shore itself (Miller 2012, 252-253). That value is now outdated with the IPCC’s recent release of its “Summary for Policy Makers” which warned that coral reefs could disappear altogether within the next few decades (Milman 2017).

Freshwater aquatic zones are experiencing different yet equally dire destruction by processes such as dam construction and water withdrawal for irrigation. Another problem faced by aquatic areas are invasive species which “can displace or cause the extinction of native species and disrupt ecosystem services and human economies.” In fact, ⅔ of fish extinction in the United States has been caused by invasive species within the last hundred years or so (Miller 2012, 253). These species can be introduced in a number of ways; for example, “many arrive in the ballast water that is stored in tanks in large cargo ships to keep them stable. These ships take in ballast water, and whatever microorganisms and tiny fish species it contains, from one harbor and dump it into another” (253). These ships are now required to flush out their ballast water before entering a harbor, but invasive species nonetheless are transported such as by sticking to the body of a ship. This just goes to show how important effective and strict environmental law and policy are in the protection of biodiversity.

Miller explains that protecting marine biodiversity has proven somewhat difficult, one reason being that “much of the damage to the oceans and other bodies of water is not visible to most people” (260). Another reason is that people see the oceans “as an inexhaustible resource that can absorb an almost infinite amount of waste and pollution.” Clearly, as explicated in the trailer for “Albatross” about the garbage in the Pacific, this is not the case, we just can’t see the waste and pollution because so much of it is in the bodies of animals (Albatross). Lastly, and perhaps most problematic, “most of the world’s ocean area lies outside of legal jurisdiction of any country” making it for the most part a free for all, similar to the concept of the “Tragedy of the Commons” which describes how, when land is common, people will tend to deplete it by overconsumption; however, when land becomes privatized, land owners will tend to take better care it since it is their land” (Miller 2012, 260).

Another way to move away from the tragedy of the commons outcome and encourage people to protect aquatic biodiversity is through economic incentive. Miller describes a case study a 2004 study conducted by the World Wildlife Fund that found that “sea turtles are worth more to local communities alive than dead” due to the revenue that sea turtle tourism creates that is “three times more than the sale of turtle products such as meat, leather, and eggs” (261). Thus, informing and educating people about the economic benefits of protecting their native wildlife and essentially feeding into the anthropocentric ideology could actually prove beneficial.

That said, in response to Miller’s Critical Thinking Question #9 of this chapter, the first important point of my policy that I would use to protect the world’s aquatic biodiversity is that we serve to benefit more in the long run by preserving animals than killing and selling them for profit (Miller 2012, 276). Secondly, because it has proven so difficult to divide and establish authority over international waters, I would create an entire department of defense geared towards biodiversity preservation and a sub-branch that is entirely assigned to water bodies to carry out the laws and exercise authority that forms the basis of my third policy implementation which would be to ban all hunting, poaching, and trading of marine species as a fully encompassing way of protecting them that resolves any confusion about who has right to which part of the ocean in that no one would under my authority. I don’t think scientists have a good enough reason to want to explore the oceans, unless of course it is for the purpose of protecting marine species. We have already degraded enough of the planet and there are few reasons compelling enough to cause any more harm.

Miller’s Chapter 12: Food, Soil, and Pest Management addresses the issue of food security and why, despite the fact that we have more than enough food, people are still going hungry (Miller 2012, 278). This divide can only grow with increasing global temperature rise and its impacts such as drought leading to more frequent and intense periods of food shortages i.e. famine (Miller 2012, 279). This in turn will displace more people thus exacerbating the issue of congestion and overcrowding as people are forced to immigrate. Another issue posed to the food supply is the consequences of specialization that “puts us in a vulnerable position should any number of the small number of crop strains, livestock breeds, and fish and shellfish species we depend on disappear as a result of factors such as disease, environmental degradation, and climate change” (Miller 2012, 281). Miller furthers that this violates the principle of sustainability that addresses biodiversity in that we have no “ecological insurance policy for dealing with changes in environmental conditions” given our limited food source variety (281).

There are two major types of agriculture, industrialized and subsistence. The former uses heavy equipment and lots of resources such as capital, water, fossil fuels, and commercial fertilizers/pesticides to produce monocultures which are single crop types grown for the purpose of bolstering yield (281). This form of agriculture uses 25% of global cropland and occurs largely in developed countries, producing roughly 80% of the global food supply (Miller 2012, 281). Subsistence agriculture on the other hand is done by individuals producing only what they need to support themselves or their community. Another types of agriculture is slash-and-burn which involves the burning of tropical forests for the purpose of clearing land away in order to use it intensely until the soil is becomes infertile and the land is left to restore itself, which can take decades (283). This process, as well as agriculture in general is incredibly detrimental to soil, especially topsoil, which takes centuries to regenerate (284). Topsoil erosion can have two results, the first being fertility loss “through depletion of plant nutrients in topsoil” and water pollution “in nearby surface waters, where eroded topsoil ends up as sediment,” which kills animals and clogs water bodies (Miller 290). Soil can also erode naturally by wind and water, especially in regions with high rainfall, which explains why rainforests have very infertile soil, despite sustaining such high biodiversity (289).

The Green Revolution began in the 1950’s with the rapid increase in global food production due to high-input industrialized agriculture to bolster crop yields (Miller 2012, 283). The Green Revolution is also marked by an increase in efficiency and crop yield without the need for more land, which has been beneficial in keeping large forest land in the U.S. from being cultivated for agriculture (285). The major downfall, however, is the massive amount of fossil fuel combustion both during the production and transportation of goods (288). The Green Revolution is also responsible for a large amount of waste, pollution, environmental hazards, and public health problems (Prof’s PowerPoint).

A pest, according to Miller, “is any species that interferes with human welfare by competing with us for food, invading lawns and gardens, destroying building materials, spreading disease, invading ecosystems, or simply being a nuisance” (297). There are many natural pest controls such as spiders that kill more insects than humans; however, deforestation and agriculture that uses chemicals to clear land upsets this natural balance, forcing us to create artificial and less effective pest control methods (Miller 2012, 297). This is just one more example of how we simply cannot replicate natural ecosystem processes. Other disadvantages of synthetic pesticides include the acceleration of genetic resistance to pesticides by pests that breed at rapid rates and can develop and inherit immunity through natural selection. Moreover, because of this genetic resistance, farmers will have to spend more money on new forms of pesticides (299). Lastly, synthetic pesticides are not sedentary and can pollute surrounding land by spreading through the air, water, or even unintentionally to wildlife and humans. On the other hand, the advantages are that pesticides can save lives, help increase food supply, increase profits, etc. (Miller 2012, 299).

An Environmental News Network article titled “Using the Sun and Agricultural Waste to Control Pests” discusses an alternative to synthetic pesticides using ‘bio solarization,’ a process that combines solar energy with soil amendments to manage weeds and other soil-borne pests” (ENN 2019). This is a zero-waste process that takes “low-value byproducts of crop production,” i.e. food waste such as skins and hulls and adding it to the soil to promote good bacterial growth which in turn increases soil acidity making it inhospitable to many weeds and pests. This is in addition to regular solarization which involves laying a clear plastic tarp over soil to trap radiation (pictured below) and heat the soil effective killing weeds and pests. This process takes several weeks, so by adding the food waste, farmers can reduce soil treatment time to just a few days. This pest management method eliminates the need for synthetic pesticides and produces no waste in that, besides the plastic tarp, it uses recycled materials that would have otherwise gone to waste. Moreover, it’s an excellent example of how industrial agriculture can reduce its environmental impact and integrate sustainability into its operation (ENN 2019).
