Old Midsummer Day/ St Modwenna’s Day
Tumblr media
Tynwald Day 2020. Source: Manx Radio website
Today is St Modwenna’s Day. Modwenna and her companion St Fraidd were two, almost certainly invented, saints, probably refashioned from pagan goddesses, who went exploring the coast of Ireland and caused a piece of land to break away under their feet and float out to sea. The two sailed on their rocky raft until it collided with Wales and formed the peninsula of Deganwy in Gwynedd. Modwenna decided to travel from Wales to Burton upon Trent where she became a hermit. Apparently she answered prayers if a pig was sacrificed to her, particularly by childless couples desperate for an offspring - a further sign of Modwenna’s pre-Christian origins.
Old Midsummer Day is also the day on which the Tynwald Ceremony takes place on Tynwald Hill on the Isle of Man. On 5th July all the Isle’s laws for the coming year are ceremonially read and voted on before they can be adjudged to be fully in place. The ceremony dates back to Viking times and the hill itself is reckoned to be a Norse construction at which the Tyn, or meeting, took place to pass laws in a fine exercise in primitive democracy. The ceremony is a colourful event, attended by dignitaries, judges, elected representatives, military parades and hundreds of tourists every year.

When you stumble down a YouTube hole, and in your suggested videos is a one of some students from the Isle of Man fighting to enable Syrian refugees to take refuge on the Isle of Man.
And one of those students is none other than 15 year old Joe Locke.
Joe along with two other students, Breesha and Sam, are interviewed on Manx Radio, after organising a petition asking Tynwald to set up a committee to "investigate the feasibility" of resettling refugees.

I love that at such a young age, Joe was so eloquent and caring of his fellow human. Go Joe!

Tynwald Day Special: Maughold of Man
~ ~
Our sixth Celtic Month piece celebrates Tynwald Day, the national day of the Isle of Man, which is on July 5th. Remember to pet a Manx cat.
Before you read what the piece means to me, share what it means to _you_. I’m just the artist; you’re the beholder.
~ ~
The Isle of Man, also sometimes spelled Mann, is a little Gaelic nation in the Irish Sea; the Manx language is closely related to Irish and Scottish Gaelic. The language became extinct with the death of its last native speaker in 1974; but revival is in progress, and many people have learned the language since that time with the help of the materials he left behind.
I know of no better Manx story than the origin of Man’s patron saint, St. Maughold of Man; called, in Latin, Maccaldus.
According to the tale, Maughold was a young Irish prince and leader of a gang of ne’er-do-wells during the time when St. Patrick was teaching Christianity in Ireland. One time, he and his companions tried to make a fool of St. Patrick by putting a live man under a shroud and begging St. Patrick to revive him. St. Patrick came and placed his hand on the man, but nothing happened; and after he went away, they discovered that the man under the shroud was dead.
They caught up to St. Patrick, apologized to him, and begged him to come back and revive the man for real; which St. Patrick did, and the man was risen back to life.
After that, the youths all asked to be baptized as Christians; and after baptizing them, St. Patrick admonished Maughold for leading his followers into ill deeds. To make things right, St. Patrick told him he must set to sea in a tiny wicker-boat (a coracle, scarcely larger than its occupant), without any oars, and abandon himself to the will of God.
Maughold did so; and he was conducted safely to the shores of Man; they say, at the place that became known as Maughold Head. He lived in a cave for many years, and went on to become the successor to Romuil and Conindri (in Latin, Romulus and Conindrus), the disciples Patrick had previously sent to teach Christianity to the Manx people.

Isle of Man: A Historical Odyssey from Celts to Vikings
Tumblr media
The Isle of Man, a small island situated in the Irish Sea between Great Britain and Ireland, is renowned for its rich history, stunning landscapes, and vibrant culture. With its unique blend of Celtic, Viking, and Norse heritage, the island offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, alongside a plethora of attractions for modern explorers. From ancient monuments to picturesque coastal paths, the Isle of Man is a treasure trove waiting to be discovered.
Historical Significance
The history of the Isle of Man is a tapestry woven from the influences of various civilizations over thousands of years. Evidence of human habitation dates back to the Mesolithic period, around 8,000 years ago, with Neolithic and Bronze Age sites scattered across the island, such as the Meayll Hill Stone Circle and the Balladoole Viking Burial.
During the Iron Age, the Celts established their presence on the island, leaving behind a legacy of hill forts and roundhouses. The Celtic influence is still evident today in the island's language, Manx Gaelic, which has seen a revival in recent years.
The arrival of the Vikings in the 9th century marked a significant chapter in the island's history. The Isle of Man became a vital part of the Norse kingdom of Mann and the Isles, with Viking rulers exerting control over the island for several centuries. This period left an indelible mark on the island's culture and heritage, with remnants such as the Viking ship burial at Balladoole and the ancient Tynwald Hill, where the island's parliament, Tynwald, has met for over a thousand years, making it the oldest continuous parliamentary body in the world.
The medieval era saw the construction of impressive castles, such as Castle Rushen in Castletown and Peel Castle on St Patrick's Isle. These fortifications played crucial roles in the island's defense and governance. The island eventually came under the control of the Scottish and then the English crowns, yet it maintained a significant degree of autonomy, which continues today as a self-governing British Crown Dependency.

Places to Explore
The Isle of Man offers a diverse array of attractions that cater to a wide range of interests:
Castletown and Castle Rushen: Once the island’s capital, Castletown is home to Castle Rushen, one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Europe. The castle's towering limestone walls and intricate interiors offer a glimpse into the island's feudal past.
Peel and Peel Castle: This picturesque fishing port is dominated by the ruins of Peel Castle, which sits on St Patrick's Isle. The castle, originally a place of worship before becoming a fortress, provides panoramic views of the surrounding sea.
Tumblr media
Douglas and the Manx Museum: The island's modern capital, Douglas, is a vibrant hub of activity. The Manx Museum in Douglas provides an excellent overview of the island's history, culture, and natural heritage.
The Great Laxey Wheel: Also known as Lady Isabella, this is the largest working waterwheel in the world. Located in the village of Laxey, it was built in the 19th century to pump water from the local lead mines.
Snaefell Mountain Railway: This charming electric railway takes visitors to the summit of Snaefell, the island's highest peak. On a clear day, you can see the seven kingdoms: England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, the Isle of Man, Heaven, and the Sea.
The Calf of Man: A small island off the southern tip of the Isle of Man, it is a nature reserve teeming with birdlife and seals. It's an ideal spot for nature enthusiasts and hikers.
Heritage Railways: The island is home to several heritage railways, including the Steam Railway and the Manx Electric Railway, offering scenic journeys through the countryside and along the coast.
Isle of Man TT Races: Held annually in late May and early June, this world-famous motorcycle race attracts enthusiasts from around the globe. The Snaefell Mountain Course, with its challenging twists and turns, is a legendary circuit in the racing world.

Conclusion
The Isle of Man is a destination that seamlessly blends historical significance with natural beauty. Whether you are a history enthusiast, nature lover, or adventure seeker, the island offers a rich array of experiences. The Isle of Man experiences a temperate maritime climate, characterized by mild temperatures and relatively high humidity. The weather can be quite changeable due to the island's location in the Irish Sea. The weather and climate of the Isle of Man make it a year-round destination, ensuring that there is always something to explore and enjoy on this captivating island.

To which country of the United Kingdom is the Isle of Man closest?
Tumblr media
The Isle of Man is an island in the middle of the northern Irish Sea. Of the four countries that make up the United Kingdom, Scotland is the closest with a distance of 16 miles (26 km). The distance to England measures 31 miles (50 km), whilst Northern Ireland is 30 miles (49 km) from the Isle of Man. Wales is much further away, with up to 67 miles (108 km) separating it from the island.
The Isle of Man is 14 miles (22 km) wide and 32 miles (52 km) long, with a total of 99 miles (160 km) of coastline. The island's terrain is varied with mountains in the north and south, and a valley in the centre. Snaefell is the Isle of Man's highest mountain, which measures 2037 feet (621 meters) above sea level. On a clear day, it is possible to see Scotland, England, Ireland and Wales from the top of the mountain.
The Isle of Man is a Crown dependency, meaning foreign affairs, defence, and governing are handled by the British government. In all other matters, the island is independent. It has a Parliament called Tynwald, which is the longest-running parliament in the world. The island has a flag with a red background and 3 armoured legs joined together to symbolise, "whichever way you throw us, we always land on our feet".
