Top 12 Ghosts of Christmas Yet to Come
It’s funny how Christmas Eve sees us covering arguably the scariest and most unnerving of the Three Spirits of Christmas, at the end of our journey through some of the side players for Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol.” The irony is almost hilarious. I speak, of course, of the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, a.k.a. The Ghost of Christmas Future. The Third Spirit is interesting in that he’s arguably the most well-remembered and exciting of the three ghosts: he’s the dark and brooding payoff on Scrooge’s journey, and getting through his section of the tale - the most gut-wrenching chapter of the entire story - is a challenge for the audience, especially for younger viewers or readers. While the black cloak the Ghost wears in the book symbolizes the shadow mystery of the future - emphasized by the fact the Spirit never speaks, and only the tiniest gestures and nuances give away any indication of its thoughts or feelings - it has never been lost on anyone that the visual representation very closely resembles the iconography of the Grim Reaper. What’s interesting about the Spirit of Christmas Yet to Come is that they have honestly changed the least out of all three Ghosts in how they’ve been visually represented over the years. While there have been some minor changes here and there, most versions of the character stick with the same visual basics of a dark figure in a black hooded robe, with only their hands - or even just one hand - visible. Yet, at the same time, along with Christmas Past, the Spirit of the Future is one that artistic people LOVE to toy with in various ways, from more simplistic to more wild concepts, which creates a sort of paradox. You can always tell which Spirit is meant to be the Future in every good take on the Carol, but it’s always fun to see the little additions and changes each rendition brings to the table. There’s not much more to say (fitting for a typically mute character), so let’s just jump right in: in honor of Christmas Eve (still ironically), these are My Top 12 Favorite Portryals of the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come!
12. Charlie B. Barkin, from An All Dogs Christmas Carol. (Purely for the sheer INSANITY of this one. That, and the song he gets is catchy…yes, he sings. I told you it was insane.)
11. Czeslaw Konarski, from Scrooge (1951). (While simplicity can be used to great effect, I feel this one is a little TOO simple, hence why he takes a lower tier. But he’s still quite impactful.)
10. D’Arcy Corrigan, from A Christmas Carol (1938). (This version has such a great entrance, just for a start.)
9. Robert Hammond, from Scrooged. (Further proof this movie is basically “A Ghostbusters Christmas Carol.”)
8. Tim Potter, from A Christmas Carol (1999).
7. Paddy Stone, from Scrooge (1970).
6. Pete, from Mickey’s Christmas Carol.
5. The Version from Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol.
4. Jim Carrey, from A Christmas Carol (2009). (Really cool concept having the Spirit act as Scrooge's literal shadow. They did something like that many decades before in the 1935 version, but it's way better here.)
3. The Version from The Muppet Christmas Carol. (Puppeteered by Don Austen and Robert Tygner.)
2. The Version from A Christmas Carol (1971).
1. Michael Carter, from A Christmas Carol (1984). (I love the detail on how, as the sequence goes on, the ghost gets closer and closer to Scrooge, symbolically showing how his future is getting ever nearer.)

Character ask: The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come (A Christmas Carol)
Tagged by anonymous
Favorite thing about them: How deliciously creepy it is. Together with Jacob Marley, this Ghost is the one who makes A Christmas Carol truly a ghost story, and a scary one too.
Least favorite thing about them: Hmmm... well, it causes Scrooge (and the readers/audience) plenty of terror and discomfort. But it's all for Scrooge's own good and for the good of others like Tiny Tim.
Three things I have in common with them:
*I often wear black (it's a good base for other colors).
*I can be quiet.
*I can be brutally honest.
Three things I don't have in common:
*I'm not an eerie ghost whose face no one can see.
*I'm not mute.
*I don't radiate a sense of gloom and misery.
Favorite line: For the book, N/A, but who could forget the moment in Mickey's Christmas Carol when the Ghost's hood falls back to reveal that it's Pete, and he gives this reply to Scrooge's question "Whose lonely grave is this?":
"Why, yours, Ebenezer! The richest man in the cemetery!"
brOTP: Its fellow ghosts, if it were to interact with them.
OTP: None.
nOTP: Scrooge, or any human.
Random headcanon: The visions it shows to Scrooge aren't all from the same future Christmas. Dickens writes that they seem to be in no particular order, save that they're all in the future. So while Tiny Tim's death would have taken place only a year after the story's main events, the scenes dealing with Scrooge's death take place several years later. Since Scrooge is in decent health for his age (still working, still walks to and from his office, endures icy weather with no ill effects even while he has a cold, etc.), I'd like to imagine that he'll have many more years after his redemption to enjoy his new life.
Unpopular opinion: The Ghost isn't a skeleton underneath its hooded robe. Even though it looks like the Grim Reaper, it isn't a pitiless symbol of death. Its purpose is to save Scrooge by warning him of his fate if he doesn't change. In the book, when Scrooge pleads for the chance to redeem himself at his own grave, the Ghost's formerly inexorable pointing hand is described as shaking, and Dickens's narrative voice calls it "the kind hand." Adaptations that portray it as a straightforward Grim Reaper determined to plunge Scrooge into the grave (either figuratively or literally) can be scary and effective, but that's not the Ghost that Dickens described.
Song I associate with them:
"Dancing on Your Grave" from A Christmas Carol: The Musical.

Favorite pictures of them:
This illustration by John Leech:
This illustration by Sol Eytinge Jr.
Czeslaw Konarski in the 1951 film.
From Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol, 1962.
Paddy Stone in Scrooge, 1970.
Peg-Leg Pete in Mickey's Christmas Carol, 1983.
Michael Carter (a.k.a. Bib Fortuna in Return of the Jedi) in the 1984 TV film.
Don Austen/Robert Tygner in The Muppet Christmas Carol, 1992.
Geraldine Chaplin in A Christmas Carol: The Musical, 2004. (A balletic elderly female wraith in white tatters is less scary than the traditional black-hooded phantom, but she's still eerie in her own way, and at least she still never speaks.)
From Disney's 2009 CGI film.

Top 12 Ghosts of Christmas Past
The final three lists for this little Christmas Carol marathon will cover the characters I suspect those of you following have been most curious about: the Three Ghosts of Christmas themselves. We’ll be covering them in order of appearance, so first up is the Ghost of Christmas Past. Christmas Past is quite possibly the most creatively interesting Spirit of the whole bunch. I say this because, with the latter two specters, there’s really not THAT much change between how different versions interpret them. It’s very rare they look or behave in a way that is drastically different from a lot of others. However, the First Spirit seems to allow for more creative freedom, being ambiguous in many ways. Dickens describes the Spirit as an ageless thing, somehow resembling a child and an old man at the same time, with a strange voice and an ethereal appearance. The Spirit is represented with imagery of light of fire, carrying an oversized extinguishing cap, which is all that can shroud the proverbial light of truth it pours out. There’s a lot of ways you can go with that, visually, along with the ideas Dickens shares of the Spirit’s face carrying the faces of others Scrooge has known. It’s not uncommon for this Spirit to often be played as a female character, too, most likely just because there really aren’t that many major female presences in the story. The whole sequence of the Past is interesting as it serves a double purpose. For the reader or audience, it is an origin story that explains why Scrooge is the way he is, plain and simple. But what I think many versions of the Carol forget is that the Spirit is re-relating this information to Scrooge himself, and that, too, has meaning. This isn’t clumsy writing, with Dickens having a character be reminded of stuff they already know: rather, it is a chance for Scrooge to reflect and consider where he went wrong and why. It is the first step in him learning the lesson he must learn: that not only is there a good reason to celebrate Christmas, but he has forgotten what it means to effectively be human. Like those he oppresses, Scrooge came from a lonely and small place, and he’s become so obsessed with avoiding that state, he’s completely forgotten what it means. He has forgotten what it means to care about other people, what it means to be in love, what it means to just enjoy life as it is. The Past reminds him not of things he knows, but of things he fails to recognize. With such an important message to relate, and so many creative directions one can go with the character, picking my favorite takes on the First Spirit was, again, rather difficult. I think the ones I’ve chosen, however, are ultimately the cream of the crop, in my own humble opinion. These are My Top 12 Favorite Portrayals of the Ghost of Christmas Past!
12. David Johansen, from Scrooged. (You guys didn’t think I’d ignore this film completely, with these lists, did you?)
11. Kath Soucie, from A Christmas Carol (1997). (She actually plays several characters in this version.)
10. Sally Fraser, from Shower of Stars: A Christmas Carol. (In this one, the actress who plays the Ghost also plays Belle. I like that touch.)
9. Jiminy Cricket, from Mickey's Christmas Carol.
8. Michael J. Dolan, from Scrooge (1951).
7. Angela Pleasance, from A Christmas Carol (1984).
6. Edgar Barrier, from the Campbell Playhouse Radio Production (1939).
5. Joan Gardner, from Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol.
4. The Version from The Muppet Christmas Carol. (Voiced by Jessica Fox. Puppeteered by Karen Prell, Robert Tygner, and William-Todd Jones.)
3. Jim Carrey, from A Christmas Carol (2009).
2. Diana Quick, from A Christmas Carol (1971).
1. Joel Grey, from A Christmas Carol (1999).
