not frequently ever & probs not at all since i was a student; no im a bookmarker & i smoke so i generally always have a scrap of card or paper; yes. um bc why would you, why would you, & why wouldnt you. and no i don't really judge on the first two, books are made to be read!! i might get judgey if it was MY book if it was a special pristine copy (more over the writing in than dog earing). and YES, yes we can 😊

ooof! Choices 🤯 OK, I'm going to go for the opening scene of do you like drugs (tonight) bc it wasn't there to start with!

I've unearthed the Notebook, where the story originally started with the second scene:

I got two pages in before I was like NO -- this was how I'd envisaged the story starting but it didn't feel like it was working, I wanted to peel back and set it up properly (and not have to keep explaining how they got here when I could just start the story a little earlier).

You can see I just gave up with an ellipsis ha:

& then the next page is the real ~asterisked in first scene instead.

I'm going to cheat a bit and not go for the whole scene, and instead pick out a couple of (annie-centric) paras:

i. what eventually became the opening: "“So,” Annie says, shimmying her upper body the oblique way that makes those lengthening waves surge at her shoulders. “Given any more thought to the motorbike?”"

ii. and another one a bit further on: "“How is, uh, Steaming Spas doing?” Annie prolongs, thumbs hooking on belt loops. Something about her stance suggests she’s about to whip an apple from thin air to start chewing slow; as if settling for surveillance, rooted to the ground where she stands in front of the desk."

Which ended up being some of my fave bits & neither of which were really there in the first pass:

You can (maybe?) see 'originally' she was saying that first line with some impressive brow-waggling, then there's an addendum that she's shimmying, moving her hair, and then there's another one that she crunches down on an apple from god knows where, as well as something about annie shimmying (?) with finger guns in the margin. And the whole motorbike thread got added in up top.

I love being able to to throw things down & trust that future me will sort it out 😂🙏 particularly for stuff like motion which can be difficult to capture in words. and I like how the apple eating became theoretical rather than actual! I also like how what was the new opening got split into the first line, and then another bit (13 paras in I make it!) -- collating & splitting is one of my fave parts of editing!

This was quite a hard fic to write, or especially to begin properly, cos it was my first/only promptfill and my mind had been spinning in different directions for how to address it, which made it a different experience to how I normally plan a story, plus I was experiencing growing pains and general hubris re assuming I could knock something short out (instead it's almost 20k).

I also don't think I was originally planning for there to be so much annie, mick, Ruby, stan -- not that there's a huge amount but it was a kinkfest prompt so I was intending for it to be quite narrowly focused. But I actually really like the balance, and particularly the almost bookending of the real life scenes at the beginning and the end (beth + annie at work; Beth talking to Ruby & stan into her getting home) vs the relaxed bubble of the night, as well as the contrast in Beth's povs there re ~relaxing 😊

im not sure i agree that it's terrible advice, actually! i think it can be, mm, misapplied/misinterpreted though?

Bc first of all you can learn/know new things!! Research is real!!!

But also bc I tend to think of this as meaning more hm, write the emotional truth? You can put characters in situations you've not experienced and thus might not 'Know' but if you know the emotions they're experiencing, you can know what you're playing with, you know? 🤔

Anyhoo what do I know... A lot of trivia, ~emotional intelligence, how I like to treated as (an) audience, basic re/search skills, the benefits of self/reflection, the word autoscopy
