Alps to Ocean Trail - Twizel to Lake Ohau Lodge
A 315km cycle trail from the highest mountains in New Zealand to the coast, the Alps 2 Ocean Trail is a wonderful way to spend the best part of a week on a bike. Due to logistics I skipped the first couple of sections from Aoraki Mount Cook and started in Twizel, spending six days riding the remaining six section to Oamaru. This post covers the first day cycling 46km from Twizel to Lake Ohau…

Twizel Bridge
We kinda found this bridge by accident while crossing a more modern bridge. And Tia wanted to check it out, and was kinda worth it.
It’s a stones throw away from the Scottish border! It’s not every day you can go over such an old bridge and it actually have an interpretation board.
Just a little something different. We didn’t go up the hill to the castle on the hill, I couldn’t and even Tia thought it was too bloody cold to go check it out! (Which is a shame as it looked cool)
Enjoy! The bridge!
This is the way up to the bastle on the hill!

Twizel Castle, Duddo, Northumberland.
In the furthest reaches of Northumberland, close to the Scottish border, stands the romantic ruin of an ancient family seat. This is not a particularly unusual sight in this region of skirmishes and sackings, so why has this particular building become known as a folly? It is of course an elegant eye-catcher, seen over the single span of the ancient bridge over the river Till, but there is more to…

Leaving the trail and hopping on a bike Teddy made his way from Tekapo to Twizel along the Tekapo Canal. This section of the Te Araroa was a welcome reprieve from walking. The gentle slope of the path paired with the turquoise glacial waters and sun filled blue skies brought Teddy joy the entire ride.

Ok so @socialc1imb wrote this story which absolutely murdered me about the Link in between ocarina of time and wind waker, which they and the original creator of him (@twizel ) call River/Flood. So here's some scenes from the fic that made me go 😭😭😭
Also, for the sake of this drawing I made a Rain (Zelda) design. I sincerely hope that's alright, but if not I'm sorry about that. I tried to base it off of what we know about her (ancestor of Tetra, daughter of the king of Hyrule from wind waker) so I'm hoping that makes it a little less presumptuous of me. Anyways here's the concept sketch of her design

Hi MJ, I’d like to know if there was only one place in NZ you could recommend someone to visit, where would it be and why? and also as a fellow too many wips to count person, have you ever started writing a scene for one wip and then deciding it would work better in another? Hope you’re having a nice weekend ☺️
Oooooooh, what fabulous questions!
I think everyone needs to see Lake Pūkaki in person at least once in their life. There's no photo that does it justice. I drive past it multiple times a year and have done for more of my life and it's still, very literally, a breathtaking sight every time. On a clear day you have an absolutely stunning view across to Aoraki, our tallest mountain, straight across the lake
HOWEVER, there's actually no town/village/anything at Pūkaki. There's Twizel pretty close, and Twizel's nice enough, but I wouldn't recommend it as the ONE place to stay haha. The truth is that this answer really does change based on who you are and what you're into, because there is so much going on in Aotearoa. Adventure sports enthusiasts and someone who wants to immerse themselves in Māori culture are gonna enjoy very different areas, you know?
In terms of scenes for a WIP... I don't think I've exactly done that? I've written a scene that I intended to be part of a longer work and then posted it as a one shot mostly out of sheer laziness lmao, but (aside from, like, hockey bf Henry where I created the doc intending to write in Henry's POV and then didn't end up doing that and kicking the intended story to part three of the series) I've never moved a scene from one fic to an entirely different fic.
[Honesty hour, ask me anything!]

Wednesday, May 15th 2024. Mt Sunday > Twizel.
It's official: we are now halfway through our whole trip, and we only have four days left of our nerd tour before we start our solo campervan journey. If you've read any of this blog so far then I hope you've enjoyed it!
We left Christchurch bright and early this morning and headed for Mt Sunday where they had built the entirety of Edoras for The Two Towers (back in the good ol' days of practical effects) with a pit stop at Mount Somers along the way. All of the barns and huts were removed when the production left back in 2000, however we were still able to see where they had filmed scenes (and using our police investigation skills actually found some traces of this) and were treated to some pretty incredible scenery regardless. It's very much a we-are-three-inches-closer-to-this-mountain-so-let's-take-a-new-picture kind of place.
The actual hike up Mt Sunday was steep and zigzaggy, but when we made it to the top we spent a good amount of time recreating scenes, posing for photos, and enjoying the sunshine (until it glued all of trousers to our legs that is). I also sat in the same spot Aragorn was eating porridge that time. On the way back down we blasted out all the classics from our phones - the LOTR, God of War, and Skyrim soundtracks - like we were strutting through downtown New York with a boombox on our shoulders (but possibly looking less cool than this).
On our way down to Twizel we visited Geraldine where they had a cheese shop with lots of free samples (as someone with an aversion to cheese this was wasted on me, although they also sold ice cream which thankfully wasn't made of cheese, but I picked up a sorbet just in case it was). Finally, we passed two lakes: Tekapo and Pukaki, both of which we'll get a better look at next week. We just enjoyed a delicious buffet at our hotel for tonight, and Jake has now gone stargazing (I don't have the heart to tell him we have stars in the UK).

Sighs. I have so many Links in my AU but.... Im gonna have to make a pre-wind waker one inspired by Flood because he makes me SAD. And when Im sad I make happier endings.
This time he does get to succeed, at least somewhat. People had to survive somehow after all to be in wind waker, and I think one little guy to help lead them is sweet. He has to make some hard decisions to help people survive, like culling a lot of their farm animals for food and to save room for people. They didn't want to just leave them to drown, so its a small mercy.
Anyhoo this is making me think of some cool worldbuilding ideas!!! And also makes me sad. So good job River!
Youll have to thank @twizel for him then! River (aka Flood’s new name) always made me so insane /pos and it was always so fun getting to see his character get built by Kore and some of our other friends

WIP tag game
Rules: In a new post, show the last line you wrote and tag as many people as there are words. Thank you @arecaceae175 for tagging me :))) the last thing i actually wrote is not for the public so instead you’re getting some goofy heckin’ (subject to change) dialogue for warnut chapter 3
“’Rabies’, Wind? Seriously?” Twilight was flipping through the journal now. “’Suckup’? Is that all you think of me?” “Shouldn’t we be more concerned about the fact that Warriors is MISSING?!?!!” “Wind, there’s something we need to tell you.” Sky crossed his arms and looked at him sternly because I decided I don’t want Time to be the serious one.
@socialc1imb @lemonlokkich @twizel i feel awkward tagging people so if you want to join hell yeah go for it

This multi-level complex features a state of the art ice skating rink and is also home to some pretty impressive water features like the Aqua Drop (150m waterslide) and Jumpernaut (Corporate Event Venues Near Me). The alpine town also boasts some other fun activities like the Mount John Summit Track, which is one of the most popular walking tracks in the country.
