Every little kitten has a big cat in its background.  These four kittens grew up on our porch with their feral mom.  All four have good homes now.  The big cats are from Turpentine Creek in Eureka Springs, Arkansas.  I used PhotoSpills to create these two collages... one on top of the other.

A much needed getaway 🤗 Saturday, I hung out at Crystal Bridges in Bentonville. After dinner at The Hive located in the 21c Museum where I am staying, I had a drink on the rooftop of The Preacher's Son. Today, I drove to Eureka Springs, but before my afternoon dinner on Main Street, I did some sightseeing at Turpentine Creek Wild Refuge, Thorncrown Chapel, Christ of the Ozarks, and St. Elizabeth Catholic Church. After my time in Eureka Springs, I headed back to Bentonville. I spent time viewing the current 21c Museum exhibition Refuge: Needing, Seeking, Creating Shelter. From living in private hands as pets, to menageries masquerading as rescue sanctuaries, to unqualified roadside zoos, these owners often operate with little oversight or accountability.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ After relocating from private owners to the @TurpentineCreek Wildlife Refuge with support from IFAW, Naula and Kiara are settling into their new home. Now they can enjoy a spacious habitat, nutritious diets, plenty of enrichment toys, and expert care utilizing the highest safety standards.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ These tigers are incredibly lucky their previous owners did the right thing and reached out to the Big Cat Sanctuary Alliance, of which IFAW is a founding member. The alliance consists of sanctuaries and organizations working together to improve the lives of captive big cats like Naula and Kiara and to ensure that those who cannot be released to the wild can live out their days in the most natural way possible.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Before they were privately-owned, Naula and Kiara originally came from Joe Exotic, who was found guilty of animal abuse. As shown in the Netflix documentary series Tiger King, the United States has a big cat problem. Big cat breeders, dealers, and exhibitors often refer to their facilities as “sanctuaries” and to their mission as “rescue.” Far too few people are aware of the essential attributes of a legitimate sanctuary—absolutely no big cat breeding, buying/selling, or direct contact with members of the public under any circumstances.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ To help advance the Big Cat Public Safety Act, which would bring an end to private ownership of big cats in the U.S., you can help by taking action at the link in our bio. Good Night, Friends! Giselle is ready for a cozy snooze in her pile of comfy leaves. Nothing like a cozy pile of freshly raked leaves to catnap in :-) The animal care staff put a lot of effort into raking up leaf piles for the cats to play in. It takes a whole lot longer to rake up those leaves than it takes the cats to scatter them back out. Such a labor of love.

Hunter, a five-year-old serval, was spotted wandering alone by locals near a New Mexico State Park. ⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ The folks who saw him took the correct course of action by notifying the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish. After a conservation officer safely trapped the mid-sized exotic cat, we teamed up with @turpentinecreek (TCWR) to rescue him. Despite being declawed, Hunter was in otherwise good condition and will receive the lifelong care he needs at TCWR.⁠⠀ ⁠⠀ Hunter was bred by a Feline Conservation Foundation facility, an advocacy group for private ownership of exotic pets, and his story is sadly not an isolated incident. Another serval named Rocky escaped from his owner’s home in North Carolina earlier this year and remains on the loose. As more and more wild cats escape, we risk creating self-sustaining populations of African predators in our backyards. These animals do NOT make good pets, nor do they belong in captivity. Harley Bear says, "GOOD NIGHT, Friends!" Harley loves his toy! Harley enjoys lounging in his pool in the warmer months, taking daily naps in his fire hose bench as well as standing and scratching his back against the wall of his habitat and night house.
