(2023) Mondo is very bold and aggressive towards humans. She has a very stubborn personality and is not afraid to come up to the Staff and challenge them as they approach to give her medications and food. We have a lot of work to do on her transformation, but like all animals that come to the Refuge, we are confident that she will find peace in her new life of sanctuary.

Athena Tiger - Athena loves to quietly watch her neighbors and keepers work around her. She will also sneak in some play time with her toys when no one is watching!

RESCUE STORY: On December 7, 2009, Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge received an email from a man representing a facility formerly open to the public. The email explained how the facility had to part with 7 big cats, a black bear, and a coatimundi in order to be eligible to reopen to the public.
Accessing the three tigers (Chuff, Abigail, and Athena) would be challenging, so the decision to anesthetize them and physically carry them to the rescue trailer was determined to be the safest for all involved.
When they first came to the Refuge, Athena and her siblings were very aggressive and difficult to manage. With a lot of time and incredible effort from our team, they were able to settle down a bit.
They are still some of the more aggressive animals we have on the Refuge, but they are much more tolerant (probably because they now live a life of sanctuary rather than exploitation).

GOOD AFTERNOON! Meet Emma Caracal

**Rescue Story:** In December 2023, Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge received an email from a private owner regarding a six-year-old female caracal named Emma. The owner wanted to send her to an accredited sanctuary, explaining that she had tried to rescue Emma from a breeder in 2022.
Emma had been kept in the owner's basement, which was adjacent to where her son lived. Over time, the owner found it increasingly difficult to navigate the stairs and care for Emma properly. According to the owner, Emma enjoyed playing with cat toys, and she had a playful habit of running and swatting at people's legs when their backs were turned. This behavior is natural for felines, as they instinctively stalk and hunt when they sense a chance. One of the concerning factors about owning a wild animal is this very behavior. Although Emma had access to two windows in the basement, she had never experienced the outdoors.
Upon arrival at Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge, a large mass was discovered on her back, which she had apparently had for around two years. Dr. Kellyn performed a visual examination and, a week later, conducted a thorough exam under sedation. This comprehensive check included bloodwork, x-rays, and the removal of the mass. Overall, Emma was found to be in very good health with her claws intact.
Due to her past experiences, Emma is quite comfortable with people; however, she will also hiss and assert herself, displaying her wild instincts as expected.
