Turbo Charging in the American Auto Industry
The history of turbochargers in American cars is a fascinating journey of innovation, experimentation, and resurgence. The turbocharger, a device that forces extra air into an engine’s combustion chamber to improve power output, has been used sporadically in American automotive engineering since the mid-20th century. Its use has evolved from a niche technology to a widespread solution for…

Hello! Hope your day is going well. I was wondering if for the Compresses Power Rangers Timeline AU, if you could list the teams, who's on each team, their rough age and what they do(and possibly the town's name-or would it make sense to use Angel Grove?). I really want to make a one shot of a typical day in this town for the AU, but I only know Ninja Steel, Dino Charge, Samaria and MMPR. I want to make this as accurate as possible. Thanks! Have a great day!

Mr. Garcia keeps his regular job but also gives Javi less of a hard time because music teachers are supposed to be able to play a bunch of different instruments and it looks like he has good chance to take Maya’s place when she leaves the school
Solon remains in the base because she is a dinosaur
Extra notes I came up with on the fly
K is growingly more paranoid due to the number of ranger teams she has evidence have robots in their ranks especially the beast morphers since that’s the team their closest too
Preston was “bullied” out of the magic the gathering club by the mystic rangers due to Vida trying to accuse him of being an evil wizard without blowing their cover. Vida’s exact words were “we don’t don’t want your kind around here”. The ninja steel team now thinks the magic the gathering club is homophobic towards Preston and hates them. Ironically the mystic rangers all love the blue ninja steel ranger and the ninja steel rangers really life the mystic force.
Summer after spending the entire night fighting vengix and exhausted as she walks in the door and Mack the day after he found out he’s a robot. “Summer would you still be my friend if I was a robot?” “Absolutely not” cue Mack having a break down in the janitor closet only to be found by Ben and Betty who assure him they would still be his friends even if he was a robot
Mick is the impromptu medic to most of the robotic rangers
Tyzon is not sure what normal human anatomy should look like so he just copies a lot of what he’s seen Dana do but also does know someone from aquatar when he sees one and treats their injuries accordingly and the aquatar rangers just think he’s a human whose really good with secrets
The teachers are youngish (most haven’t hit 30 yet) and I use TA as a short hand for teachers in training so they’re earlier 20s. And then most of the students besides Justin and Nate are between 14-18 with Justin and Nate both being 12.
Generally everyone else is around the age they are in the show

ALFA ROMEO
Tumblr media
ALFA ROMEO is a brand that has enchanted, and continues to dazzle, many around the world. There are characteristics that have always been part of a global collective image of the brand: its "cuore sportivo" (as the Italians would say) or sports heart (for us Brazilians), indomitable vitality, the sound of the engine, the elegance of the shapes and the design purely Italian. Stories tell that Henry Ford used to take off his hat every time he saw an ALFA ROMEO pass, and that on the day that won the Italian team, Enzo Ferrari cried like a baby. The brand spanned more than a century of a mythical saga and many of its memorable pages contributed to the history of cars and glories on the tracks.
The story The company originated in 1906 when Cavaliere Ugo Stella, an aristocrat from Milan, and Alexandre Darracq, a French car manufacturer, founded the company "Societá Italiana Automobili Darracq", which started producing cars under the Darracq brand in the city of Naples. With the end of the partnership in 1910, Stella, with funding from other Italian investors, moved the production line to a disused factory in Portello, an industrial suburb in the northwestern region of Milan, changing on June 24 the name of the company for ALFA, abbreviation for Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili. The first car produced entirely by the new automaker was the 24 HP model, named after the power generated by its engine (4-cylinder engine and top speed of 100 km per hour) and designed by Giuseppe Merosi. With three hundred units produced, the model presented modern characteristics for the time, including monobloc motor and single joint transmission, distinguishing itself by the excellent recovery and carefully constructed mechanical parts. Subsequently, Merosi participated in the development of new ALFA cars, with more powerful engines, from 40 to 60 HP. ALFA also ventured into auto racing with Nino Franchini taking part in the 1911 Targa Florio riding a 24 HP model.
In 1915, under severe financial problems, the Neapolitan engineer Nicola Romeo assumed his leadership, changed his name to ALFA ROMEO and turned it into a war factory to meet the needs of Italy and its allies during the First World War. Ammunition, engines and parts for airplanes, generators and compressors based on engines of cars previously produced and even locomotives were manufactured by the company during the time that the world conflict lasted. With the end of the war, Nicola Romeo definitively assumed full control of the company and car manufacturing resumed in a timid manner in 1919. The following year, the Torpedo 20-20HP was the first car manufactured under the new brand ALFA ROMEO. Giuseppe Merosi continued as chief designer and the company continued to manufacture good street cars and successful race cars (among which the 40-60 HP and RG Targa Florio models stood out). Still in 1920, Enzo Ferrari joined ALFA ROMEO and with a 40-60HP car, immediately won a glorious second place in the Targa Florio race.
In 1923, then ALFA ROMEO team rider Enzo Ferrari convinced designer Vittorio Jano to leave FIAT and replace Giuseppe Merosi in the team's design team. The first model conceived under Jano's supervision was the P2 Grand Prix, which gave the Italian team the world title of 1925. For street cars, Jano developed a series of small and medium 4, 6 and 8-cylinder in-line engines based in the P2 engine that established ALFA ROMEO's classic engine architecture: lightweight alloy construction, hemispherical combustion chambers, central plugs, two in-line valves per cylinder and dual combustion chamber. Such an architecture proved to be durable and powerful.
In 1928, the financial turmoil of the time and the specific and small market of the manufacturer caused that Nicola Romeo was removed of the company, that ended up being bought by a consortium of banks. In 1933 the ALFA ROMEO underwent an intervention of the Italian fascist government, that came to take control of the company. At this moment the company, now a state-owned company, abandoned the competitions, and then the Scuderia Ferrari, initially as the arm of ALFA ROMEO competitions (Enzo Ferrari drove to ALFA before assuming the leadership of the team, and soon thereafter started to produce their own cars). It was Enzo's team that humiliated the German teams (Auto-Union and Mercedes-Benz), winning sensationally the German Grand Prix in 1935. At that time the rivalry went well beyond the tracks, and the government-controlled ALFA ROMEO of Benito Mussolini, had to rival and prove superior than the German Nazis. With the government in charge, the automaker began mass production serving the interests and ambitions of fascism. World War II created another serious crisis for the Italian automaker, destroying much of its facilities and virtually paralyzing the production of vehicles.
The company had to restart almost from scratch and with Italy quite destroyed, it decided to remodel its production, reducing the manufacture of luxury cars, and dedicating itself to the mass production of popular cars. But it also set a new standard: in addition to production cars, it started manufacturing limited editions or exclusive models created by famous designers. In 1947, the automaker began to launch new models that had the most modern aerodynamic concepts of the time. One such model was the sporty Freccia D'Oro (Golden Arrow, in Portuguese). ALFA ROMEO, who had always made high performance and sports cars, had to adapt to the new European situation and launched the 1900 model in 1950, designed by Orazio Satta and powered by 4 cylinders. This new car was able to serve a very demanding clientele, like the middle class, and at the same time it was very economical and beautiful. It quickly became known as "The family car that wins races". It was the dividing line between artisanal production and mass production.
In this decade, the success of the carmaker on the tracks can be translated into the achievements of the Formula 1 championships with Nino Farina in 1950, who won by riding an ALFA ROMEO 158 with compressor; and in 1951, with Juan Manuel Fangio riding an Alfetta 159 (an evolution of the 158 model with a two-stage compressor). Despite the success in the competitions, the automaker was experiencing financial difficulties and to continue to compete in Formula 1, there would be a need to build a new car, since the current ones had reached the maximum of its evolution. In this context, ALFA ROMEO has withdrawn from the tracks. This decade was also marked by the success of the 1900 model, which, thanks to exceptional mechanical characteristics and remarkable performance, became the official motor vehicle of the Italian Police, being nicknamed Pantera due to aggressive black paint. Another success of this period was the first automobile with proper name and feminine: GIULIETTA. Presented to the public in 1954 in Coupé Sprint version, its main attributes were compact dimensions, agility and good performance. With these successes, came the Alfamania, which made the desire to have an ALFA ROMEO irresistible, infecting the stars of Hollywood.
The 1960s began with the construction of a new factory in Arese, which would be inaugurated three years later in 1963. The first car produced was Giulia, which sold more than one million units in its various versions. In 1963 Autodelta was created, under the direction of Carlo Chiti, responsible for the development of race cars based on the car models of production or development of new models. These were important years for ALFA ROMEO, who consolidated both its image and its commercial position. In this decade the ALFA ROMEO became famous for its small cars and models designed especially for the Italian police (Pantere and Carabinieri), among them the glorious Giulia Super, or the 2600 Sprint GT, that received the expressive nickname of "Inseguimento" ( for being confused with the automobile used by the famous police officer, and unequaled driver, Armandino Spadafora in pursuit of thieves by a ladder in 1960). In 1967 the famous film "The First Night of a Man", starring Dustin Hoffman gave celebrity status to the Alfa Romeo Spider (also known by its Italian designations "Duetto" or "Osso di Seppia").
In the 1970s the ALFA ROMEO again went into financial crisis. The government then privatized the automaker. Despite this, the automaker created cars that became icons, such as MONTREAL, which signaled the return of the 8-cylinder engine to passenger cars, and offered sports performance and technical and mechanical characteristics adapted to day-to-day use; and the ALFETTA 2000 TD (1979), the first Italian Turbo Diesel. The 1980s were marked by the decline in ALFA ROMEO's sports participation. Even though he continued to participate in Formula 1, he became a lackluster team in the competition, contrary to his past achievements. Even so, he remained in the top motoring category until the end of the 1985 season. And then (until 1987) as an engine supplier.
At this time, in 1986, the ALFA ROMEO was acquired by FIAT, in a maneuver to avoid that the American Ford bought what was considered an Italian legacy. A new business group was created - Alfa Lancia S.p.A. - which has since dedicated itself to the manufacture of ALFA ROMEO and LANCIA cars. Before being bought by FIAT, ALFA ROMEO always maintained a daring stance in the market, trying new solutions in the tracks and using them in the series production, even with the risk of commercial losses. ALFA ROMEO has always been characterized by the controversial and unorthodox style, which for many times has raised discussions about style. Under the control of FIAT, the following year, one of the automaker's most successful models was introduced: the ALFA 164 was officially presented at the Frankfurt Motor Show, with its design project signed by the renowned Pininfarina studio, giving the car a distinct visual, and at the same time aggressive and powerful. The model achieved the feat of becoming a success also in the American market.
In 1994 the line was completed with the launch of the 164 Quadrifoglio 4, which combined the 3.0 V6 24v engine with a sophisticated four-wheel drive system with electronic traction control and a 6-speed gearbox. The new millennium begins with a record sales in 2001, when ALFA ROMEO sold 213,638 units worldwide. In January 2003, the automaker introduced the campaign "Beauty is not enough", a concept between the lines of the brand's new commercial strategy, and expressed in the importance of substance beyond form. After all, ALFA ROMEO had always been synonymous with style and elegance, but also with technical innovation. In the following years the automaker introduced a line of bold and modern vehicles such as the GT sports car, the BRERA coupe, the SPYDER convertible, the sedan 159, the exclusive 8C COMPETIZIONE sports car and more recently the compact MiTo sports car.
In 2010 the mythical brand, true Italian pride, whose technology and sportsmanship were the main factors for its success, completed 100 years. And to celebrate its centenary, ALFA ROMEO organized in Milan, a northern Italian city where everything began, several events: round the track of the Monza race track, visits to the Alfa Romeo Historical Museum (reopened temporarily), exhibition of old models in several places of the economic capital of Italy and a big parade on the streets of the city with thousands of lovers of the brand. Even with the celebration and the new releases, the brand's sales in the following years continued in sharp decline.
The turnaround seems to have begun in 2015, when ALFA ROMEO completed 105 years of a rich heritage. The commemorative date included an exciting show by tenor Andrea Bocelli, reopening of the company's museum in Milan and presentation of a completely new car designed to mark its rebirth. Its name is already known by fans of the brand: Giulia (same name of a successful sport of the years of 1960 and 1970). In addition, ALFA ROMEO has drawn up a restructuring plan that has a definite goal until 2018: to face equal, Audi, Mercedes-Benz and BMW in the segment of luxury sports. This re-launching of the brand, as it was called, cost approximately € 5 billion and involves large markets such as the United States, China and, of course, Brazil (where the brand should be relaunched in the near future), as well as reconquering Europe. The Italian automaker intends, in this period, to launch eight new car models. Nowadays there are five elements that have made ALFA ROMEO one of the most coveted car brands in the world: differentiated Italian design, state-of-the-art technology and innovative engines, perfect 50/50 weight distribution, exclusive technical solutions and the best weight ratio power. These are the indispensable ingredients for the creation of an authentic ALFA ROMEO.

2021 Lincoln Navigator is American exceptionalism made manifest

2021 Lincoln Navigator is American exceptionalism made manifest
Big boi.
Andrew Krok/Roadshow
Why do American automakers flounder when tasked with creating a luxury vehicle that has to compete with the Germans? It always seems like Uncle Sam has a hard time meeting muster when compared to anything beyond his own shores. But no more. The latest Lincoln Navigator dramatically ramps up the effort, bringing a level of fancy-pants-iness that is truly world class.
Like
Plush interior appointments
Interesting color schemes
Quiet, comfortable cruising
Don’t Like
Truckish ride quality sometimes
Thirsty
Loud massagers and other trifles
All of Lincoln’s latest SUVs have really ramped up the effort, but nowhere is that more apparent than on the flagship Navigator in its top Black Label configuration. The Navigator on my driveway carries the new-for-2021 Special Edition package, a $6,695 upgrade that adds more exterior flavor through a black-and-white motif that includes a black roof, a black roof rack, black wheels and a monochromatic grille alongside Pristine White paint. It’s a good look, but man, that’s a big chunk of change for some mild add-ons. No matter the package, though, the Navigator strikes an imposing shadow — and not just because it’s the size of a Chicago brownstone.
The 2021 Navigator Black Label’s interior is amazing. It’s the best-appointed American luxury car I’ve had the pleasure to drive, and it’s every bit as posh as what you’ll find at a Mercedes dealership. This one carries the Black Label “Destination” theme, which is meant to represent French elegance, I think, somehow. But I don’t need a marketing degree to appreciate this stunning full-red leather interior, which plays well with the dashes of similarly colored trim on the dashboard, doors and center console. While the Cadillac Escalade puts in little effort to hide its parts-bin engineering (you can find the steering wheel buttons on, like, half the cars GM makes), every piece of the Navigator feels special, from the metal rocker switches on the steering wheel to the knurled volume knob on the center console. Nearly every surface is either padded or leather-lined.
Usability abounds in the 2021 Navigator. The large center console floats above a sizable stash tray, with two tiers of pockets on each door and a decently large cubby under the center armrest. While you can option a center console to rest between the second-row captain’s chairs, my tester lacks this, making third-row ingress and egress insanely easy. Hanging out back there isn’t a big ask, either, thanks to some spacious proportions; there’s an extra inch of legroom than what you’d find in a similarly equipped Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class, and my 6-foot frame should be comfy back here for hours. The standard-wheelbase Navigator offers about 20 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row, which is OK, but flipping a couple switches to fold those seats down offers up closer to 60 cubes, expanding to 103 when you minimize the captain’s chairs, too.
Honestly, the 2021 Navigator’s interior is so well thought out that its only apparent flaws are dumb little things that most people probably won’t care about. The infotainment screen bezel is cartoonishly large. The cup holders are surprisingly tiny. The seat massagers are louder than the competition’s. The blinker stalk’s movement is too soft, leading me to miss the three-blink detent. Silly minutiae like that.
One carryover that Lincoln should be proud of is the engine under the hood. The 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6  is the same that you’ll find in the Ford Expedition and F-150, and it’s a peach. Producing 450 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque, the Navigator is never left wanting for forward motion, as the six-pot provides a wave of readily available torque that makes the whole shebang feel surprisingly sprightly. The 10-speed automatic transmission moves through the gears smoothly. In a majority of operating conditions, the 2021 Navigator’s ride is properly smooth, with the only real ride-quality issue coming into play over sharp bumps, where you get some body jiggles, which are only exacerbated on my tester thanks to its 22-inch wheels.
Sure, you could drive it like a monster, but the Navi is best when treated like there are three VIPs in the back. Roll softly onto the gas and make liberal use of the well-tuned brake pedal, and you’ll be rewarded with smooth operation. Its body-on-frame underpinnings also bestow it with some solid capability; check the box for the heavy-duty towing package and you can drag 8,700 pounds from here to Timbuktu.
Luxury is costly, and that includes at the gas pump, too. The 2021 Navigator Black Label is EPA-estimated at 16 miles per gallon city and 20 mpg highway, numbers that I was able to meet but not beat over a couple hundred miles of driving. There’s an Eco-specific mode available to numb inputs and make it easier to be efficient, and it does help a bit. There’s also a Sport mode, which must be some kind of joke I’m not smart enough to get, because under no circumstances should anyone attempt to drive this dwarf planet in any remotely aggressive manner.
Lincoln could’ve leaned much heavier on the Ford parts bin, but in not doing so, the Navigator feels just that much more special.
Andrew Krok/Roadshow
The Navigator’s complement of in-car technology starts dead center on the dashboard with a 10-inch touchscreen display running the latest version of Ford’s Sync software. The on-screen icons are easy to read at a glance, and Ford’s telematics getup is easy to get used to, but you can always rely on Apple CarPlay or Android Auto if you prefer a smartphone-style experience. In addition to the central screen, there’s also a 12-inch gauge display, which sports a minimal layout that I really enjoy, displaying only the most pertinent information. A head-up display reduces distraction even further. When it comes time to charge, there are USB ports in every row, with the foremost occupants treated to both USB-A and USB-C outlets. The Navigator lacks the whiz-bang, dashboard-wide screen experience of the Cadillac Escalade, but it’s still a good setup.
The truck-adjacent side of the automotive industry is no longer bereft of the same safety systems that are found on passenger cars. The 2021 Navigator comes standard with Ford’s Co-Pilot 360 suite of active and passive safety systems, which includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection. Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability is a $695 premium on lower trims, but it becomes standard as you move up the ranks. Of course, the Escalade can one-up the Navigator here with its Super Cruise driver-assist technology.
Hopefully the screen’s bezel is hilariously large because Lincoln intends on upgrading the display size later on.
Andrew Krok/Roadshow
Expectedly, the 2021 Lincoln Navigator is not a budget-friendly conveyance. Its starting price of $77,840 (including $1,295 for destination) only rockets northward when options are taken into account. This Black Label model is about as equipped as it can get, and its $106,115 price tag is quite the pill to swallow, until you realize that the similarly powered Mercedes-Benz GLS580 pretty much starts at the six-figure mark.
If pure luxury (and some capability) is what you’re after, the Navigator stands atop the pile of large luxury SUVs. In terms of outright comfort, the Mercedes GLS-Class is probably its closest competitor with its super ride quality. Those looking for the latest driver tech will want to check out the Cadillac Escalade with Super Cruise. Other body-on-frame competitors include the Infiniti QX80 and Lexus LX 570, both of which are rather old underneath their revised exteriors. There’s also the Range Rover, in case you want to ditch the third row and add the ability to drive through nearly 3 feet of standing water. Hey, you never know.
Cast against competitors or not, the 2021 Lincoln Navigator is an exceptional SUV. Its Black Label trim brings an impressive level of luxury to the table, while its underpinnings give it a great deal of capability,  whether that covers interior space or towing. It’s a shining city on a hill, a rolling testament to prosperity and power that makes you feel important the second you slide behind the wheel.

10 Electric Vehicles to Watch
Tumblr media
This was the year that Tesla’s lock on high-end all-electric vehicles began to break, with Audi and Jaguar sending electric S.U.V.s out into the world. They joined more workaday E.V.s from Chevrolet, Honda, Hyundai, Kia and Nissan. So 2019 was, finally, the year of the electric vehicle. Right?Sales of electric autos were double those from the year before, but they were still dwarfed by their fossil-fuel-powered brethren. With a slew of new models promised for next year and beyond, and with charging station infrastructure still being built out, the tipping point for electric autos is still in the future. But automakers are betting big on that future, and how quickly the industry takes off depends not just on choice but on a shift in customer expectations. Hurdles to a breakout include higher prices, the end of federal tax subsidies for some models and a paucity of charging stations — even though the industry argues that most charging will be done at home at night. That, especially, can be a deterrent given electric cars’ shorter range. Even so, as Mark Reuss, the General Motors president, recently wrote, “just as demand for gas mileage doesn’t go down when there are more gas stations, demand for better range won’t ease even as charging infrastructure improves.”That infrastructure is growing, nonetheless. More than 21,000 locations in the United States, with some 57,000 hookups, offer Level 2 charging, which can add maybe 20 miles of range per hour. These are fine for parking at the office or overnight, but useless on a road trip. For charging to roughly 80 percent of a battery’s capacity in about a half-hour, there are 3,300 DC Fast Charging locations with 12,000 charge points. Many of these are proprietary Tesla chargers, however.A traditional car, of course, can fill up at 168,000 gas stations across the country in the time it takes to buy a Slim Jim and a Coke. The evolution toward electrics has given carmakers freedom to play with design — picture Tesla’s jagged-edge pickup — while others are sticking with tried-and-true sedans and crossovers, simply swapping out the drivetrain. Here’s a look at some of the electric vehicles that are just reaching the market, will soon be available or are expected to arrive in 2021.Audi e-Tron Sportback: A four-door coupe version of the full-size Audi e-Tron sport utility vehicle, introduced last spring, the Sportback is expected to be available this spring. Designed to look and handle like traditional Audis, the e-Tron models will feel familiar to anyone who knows the brand. The all-wheel-drive e-Tron S.U.V. charges to 80 percent of its 204-mile range in 30 minutes with a commercial fast-DC charger. Improvements in aerodynamics and battery efficiency should modestly increase the Sportback’s range.BMW iX3: BMW will start production of its electric S.U.V. next year at its plant in China. The rear-wheel-drive vehicle is expected to provide 286 horsepower and a 273-mile range, according to the European test cycle, which is more optimistic than its American equivalent.Ford Mustang Mach-E: Ford enlisted its Shelby designers to create a traditional-looking electric S.U.V. that would echo its iconic Mustang sedan. Its first version, a 332-horsepower all-wheel-drive model, will be available late 2020, with a 459-horsepower GT version expected 18 months from now.The biggest changes, beyond fuel, are inside. A new version of the much-criticized Ford Sync connect service will feature over-the-air updates. Artificial intelligence will monitor a user’s habits and suggest appropriate actions. For example, it may ask if you want to call your mother at a certain time if it notices you typically do that each day.Natural language comprehension will allow users to state commands in various ways, such as “Take me to Santa Monica” or “I want to go to Santa Monica.”Mileage will range from an expected 210 to 300 miles, depending on the model. In the “frunk,” or front trunk, the space usually occupied by an engine will offer space designed to hold ice for tailgating; a drain plug will be included.Mercedes EQC 400 4Matic: Originally expected to arrive in the States next year, the first purpose-built all-electric Mercedes will be delayed until 2021, the company recently announced. It blamed demand in Europe. The all-wheel-drive vehicle, starting around $70,000, will feature its screen-based MBUX infotainment system now used in a number of new Mercedes models. To optimize the vehicle’s range, the MBUX system can calculate the most power-efficient routes and direct drivers to high-speed charging stations. Time to charge to 80 percent will be about 40 minutes with the fastest chargers.Porsche Taycan 4S, Turbo and Turbo S: The “entry level” version of Porsche’s first electric vehicle, the 4S will be available this spring, starting at about $104,000. (The imminently shipping Turbo costs about $151,000, and the Turbo S is $185,000.)The two current models — available with 522 or 562 horsepower — will accelerate from zero to 60 miles an hour in 3.8 seconds. The Taycan has a range of just over 200 miles, and it is one of the fastest-charging E.V.s around: A DC fast charger will juice it to 80 percent capacity in 22 minutes. The company expects that by 2025, half of its sales will be either fully electric or hybrid models.Volvo XC40 Recharge: To cut costs and time to market, Volvo is equipping its existing XC40 S.U.V. with an electric drivetrain. Expected at the end of 2020, for “under $48,000” after incentives, this is the start of a Volvo product road map that will bring out one new E.V. model each year.Over-the-air updates will be available for all vehicle features. The “completely rethought” infotainment system is based on the Android operating system, with Google Maps, Google Assistant and the Google Play app store embedded within the vehicle so they work without a phone. The 408-horsepower engine is expected to provide 240 miles of range. A high-speed commercial charger will fill the XC40 to 80 percent capacity in 40 minutes.Byton: Distinguished by many enormous wraparound screens, this Chinese-built S.U.V. will be sold in the United States, at a starting price of $45,000, beginning in the second half of 2021. Sales in its home country will start at the end of next year. Drivers can alter the screen display to account for whether the vehicle is moving or not, and whether the driver or passenger is watching. Artificial intelligence is combined with subscriptions to popular music and video services, and linked via facial recognition, so it will know your favorite artists. If the driver allows, the vehicle will have access to calendar events; knowing that you’re finishing up your spin class, the system could cool the car before you arrive.Available as a 225- or 300-mile range version, the Byton will be sold directly and through dealers, with its first company store to open in Los Angeles by the middle of next year.Canoo: One of several hopeful start-ups, Canoo plans to sell its namesake model at the end of 2021. Unlike several established marques, Canoo has taken advantage of the lack of an internal combustion engine to rethink the look of a vehicle. The symmetrical Canoo is positioned as “an urban loft on wheels,” the company says, with the rear seats arranged more like a sofa. To increase interior space, Canoo eliminates the traditional engine compartment and its protective firewall. The use of “steer by wire,” an electronic rather than a mechanical system, eliminates the need for various mechanical components, also allowing for more freedom in the placement of the steering wheel.Infotainment will be provided through a smartphone connection. The Canoo, with an anticipated 250-mile range, will be available only through subscription, the price of which (undisclosed as of yet) will cover the vehicle, registration, license and insurance. The subscription can be canceled or rolled over into another model when available, at any time.Faraday Future: Once left for dead after a splashy premiere three years ago, a planned Las Vegas factory that never got built, and a Chinese founder and funder who went bankrupt, the company is back with a new leader, the former head of Byton; new funding; and a rethought vehicle.Where once Faraday Future advocated the “bring your own device” approach to infotainment now promoted by Canoo, the current version of the large S.U.V. will sport 11 screens in its ultra-high-end FF91.The company claims that the FF91 will accelerate from zero to 60 in an astonishing 2.2 seconds (although it’s not clear why anyone would need to), and cost $150,000 to $200,000 when it comes out by September. If there’s demand, the company can build up to 15,000 units annually in a Hanford, Calif., plant that’s smaller than the ambitious one it abandoned in Las Vegas. The company says it will make money at that volume by selling its hardware and software to competitors. Plans for a smaller, more affordable FF81 exist, and the company hopes to enter “preproduction” by the end of 2020.Volkswagen ID4 Crozz: VW’s first purpose-built E.V., this compact S.U.V. is due in the States by the end of 2020, priced in the mid-$30,000s after tax credits. This will be followed in 2021 by a larger, Passat-size S.U.V., the Space Vizzion, and then in 2023 by the Buzz, Volkswagen’s electric version of its iconic bus. The vehicles will at first be imported and eventually built at the automaker’s factory in Chattanooga, Tenn.About the same size as VW’s Tiguan, the ID4 will have a range of 200 to 300 miles. Navigation commands will be shown in a windshield heads-up display, with arrows overlaid on the screen to show when to turn. Read the full article

Here’s where Americans will vacation this summer and what they’ll spend
Westend61 | Westend61 | Getty Images
Going on a summer vacation this year? You’re in good company.
Almost 100 million Americans, or 4 in 10 U.S. adults, will take a family trip in 2019, according to AAA. That’s up slightly from last year. Meanwhile, financial website Bankrate.com found in a March 2019 survey of 2,577 adults that 52% are planning a summer holiday this year.
So just about half of us, more or less, are hitting the road — literally or figuratively — in the next three months. Where are we headed and how will we get there? For the most part, somewhere we can drive to, according to findings from both AAA and vacation rental management company Vacasa.
The recent Summer Travel Trends report from Portland, Oregon-based Vacasa found that most travelers surveyed are vacationing within the U.S., with 33% traveling cross-country, 28% exploring their own region and 22% staying within the borders of their home state. (Vacasa, which operates in 30 U.S. states and 16 countries, teamed with public relations firm Allison+Partners in April 2019 to survey 1,017 Americans over age 18.)
More from Personal Finance: The top 10 ‘hidden gems’ for summer vacation travel Why travelers end up blowing their vacation budgets Travel industry extremely resilient: Expedia CEO
To that point, 64% overall will drive on their summer vacation, including 53% of Gen Z vacationers (about age 22 and younger) and 76% of people age 74 and older, Vacasa found. That basically jibes with AAA findings, which indicate road trips are among Americans’ top plans (53%) for summer getaways.
The top five routes this year for summertime road trips are, according to AAA member routing data: Las Vegas to national parks in Nevada, Arizona and Utah; the northern California and southern Oregon coasts; northern New England; North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Parkway; and the Black Hills region of South Dakota.
And 6 of the top 10 most popular destinations among Vacasa customers — Kissimmee, Florida; Miami; New Orleans; Portland, Oregon; San Diego; and Seattle — are also located in the driveable “lower 48” contiguous U.S. states. (Honolulu — a flight or two away for most — joined by Playa del Carmen, Mexico, and Milan and Rome in Italy, rounded out the list.)
Vacasa also crafted a list of 10 comparable and (often) nearby alternative “hidden gems” that may be less crowded and more affordable. Examples include Bend, Oregon, instead of Portland; Davenport, Florida, in place of Kissimmee; and Savannah, Georgia, as an alternative to New Orleans.

Domestic vacations are not necessarily less expensive overall, but cutting out transoceanic flights or sailings can mean savings on transportation.
Americans are more apt to get behind the wheel at the moment thanks to relatively reasonable fuel costs. Gas prices have been dipping since early May, after rising steadily through April from January lows. Regular gasoline cost just over $2.73 a gallon on average nationwide June 13, compared to $2.87 May 15, according to Gasbuddy.com.
In fact, 19% of travelers polled by Vacasa described themselves as “super savers” — meaning price points are paramount when they’re gauging potential getaways — while 16% claimed to be “high rollers.” (Other identities cited in the survey centered around travel motivations such as “chill masters,” “thrill seekers” and “wellness warriors.”)
On average, Vacasa customers polled said they’d budget $2,778 on their summer getaways, while Bankrate.com found the average American plans to spend $1,979. As the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports average American earnings of about $905 a week (as of the first quarter of 2019), it seems people are budgeting anywhere from two to three weeks’ pay for their summer vacations. (Vacasa’s high rollers, however, are spending upwards of $6,000 on vacations in 2019.)
More than likely, vacationers exceed their budgets by not keeping a close eye on their spending during their trip.
Keri Danielski
head of communications for Intuit Turbo and Mint
Women are the most cost-conscious spenders while away, Vacasa found. Fifty-three percent of women indicate cost/expense one of most important determining factors on where they’ll travel, compared to 41% of men. Men budget $2,958 for annual vacations, on average, compared to $2,410 for women.
Of course, drawing up a budget and then sticking to it are two different things. In 2018, budgeting app Mint reported that of the 2.2 million users who created a monthly travel budget with its technology, 44% spent more in the end than they’d saved for trips.
The reason most (60%) of those not traveling can’t or won’t go? They can’t afford it. They most common factors for those respondents are day-to-day bills (44%) and paying down debt (22%), Mint found.
“Travelers may undershoot their vacation budgets for a variety of reasons,” Keri Danielski, head of communications for Intuit Turbo & Mint, told CNBC in January. “More than likely, vacationers exceed their budgets by not keeping a close eye on their spending during their trip.”
Tumblr media
Sneaky cost culprits that help blow travel budgets include airport meals, resort staff tips, rideshare fares, airline baggage charges and resort fees that people neglect to account for in advance. The latter — supposedly covering use of gyms, pools and Wi-Fi at a hotel or resort — can run about $27 per day, according to ConsumerReports.com.
Many consumers end up putting charges, whether planned or unexpected, on a credit card, NerdWallet.com has found. In March 2018, the finance website polled 1,194 U.S. parents who were planning a family summer vacation and found that people expected to put an average $1,019 on plastic. Interest charges could add $452 to that tab, the site calculated.
How best to plan and fund a budget friendly holiday at any time of the year? Bankrate.com offers these suggestions:
Sign up for a credit card with a generous cash-back or reward points policy. You can redeem that cash or those points for flights, hotel stays and other travel perks. Just make sure to pay your bills in full and on time to make those points you earned worth it. Consider a co-branded airline, hotel chain or auto rental company card for added value.Start a vacation fund using a high-yield online savings account.Scout airline and hotel deals as early as possible. Plan ahead and decide what’s most important about each vacation and destination you’re planning to visit, so you can save and budget accordingly.Take a “stay-cation” instead and explore your own hometown or state. There are probably myriad attractions and activities you’ve never availed yourself of, and old favorites you’ve been meaning to revisit, within arm’s reach.

Press Releases: MotorWeek: 40 Years of Steering You in the Right Direction
MotorWeek: 40 Years of Steering You in the Right Direction
MotorWeek celebrates four decades of extraordinary automotive television by taking a look back while delivering advice viewers depend on today
OWINGS MILLS, MD – MotorWeek, television’s original and longest-running automotive magazine series, marks its milestone 40th season starting in September. During the upcoming season, the series will glance in the rearview mirror to take a look at the cars and the people that have made the show such as success while still keeping a focused eye on the road ahead. Every episode of the 40th anniversary season will be punctuated with archival automotive highlights, some funny and some ironic, but all entertaining and informative.
MotorWeek’s 40th season premieres on public television stations across the country beginning Saturday, September 12 (check local PBS listings).  Every week, series host and creator John Davis and the MotorWeek team continue their relentless quest to test, evaluate, and understand the insatiable but evolving American appetite for personal transportation, despite major shifts in culture and the global COVID-19 pandemic.
The new season brings the 2021 model year into focus for viewers. While the automotive industry is still ripe with near-term prospects of cleaner electric and self-driving autonomous vehicles, things are cloudier than ever due to ever-changing car company priorities and by the fact that sales having been negatively impacted by the pandemic.
“Despite these grey clouds, Americans continue to purchase pickup trucks and SUVs in near-record numbers, even as traditional sedan sales decline,” explains John Davis. “While consumers are interested in learning more about electric vehicles -- and there’s no question that a lot of electrification will be used in all future cars -- buyers are still concerned about their high price, range limitations, and the slow growth in the number of charging stations even along frequently traveled routes. These concerns will continue to make EVs niche vehicles at least for the next few years.”
Complete with updated anniversary open animation and music, the MotorWeek 40th season feature lineup continues with its roster of popular segments including Goss’ Garage, in which Master Technician Pat Goss offers up do-it-yourself car care advice; Lauren Morrison keeps viewers in the know with consumer news and trends in Motor News; daring Over the Edge reporter Greg Carloss turns up the fun with his unique look at the auto world in overdrive; lifestyle reporter Stephanie Hart delivers insights on driving and automotive safety, money-saving advice, and the latest in automotive technology in FYI; Brian Robinson brings his years of motorcycling experience to the Two Wheelin’ segment, reviewing the latest motorcycles on the road; and AutoWorld explores the advancing influence of alternative fuels, electrification, and autonomous driving safety.
“MotorWeek continues to report the facts that most affect consumers in their wallets,” says Davis. “As always, our reporters help navigate the marketplace and identify genuine trends and best values for drivers and their passengers.”
Through it all, the American car consumer remains in the driver’s seat, armed with MotorWeek’s unbiased evaluations. Season 40 of the series will cover all the new vehicles on any car buyer’s wish list, showcasing the latest technology while measuring each car’s real-world performance, practicality, efficiency, and safety.  From hatchbacks to sport-utility vehicles, exotic performance machines to pickup trucks, MotorWeek’s team of experts buckle into more than 150 vehicles each season.
Davis says that amid the myriad of highly-anticipated EVs soon to hit our streets, like the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Tesla Cybertruck, and Nissan Ariya, the real standout in 2021 is the return of an old school gasoline-powered off-roader, the reborn Ford Bronco.  Now, a brand within a brand, the new Bronco returns with a three-model lineup aimed squarely at competing with the Jeep brand.
Safety, Davis notes, continues to be a high priority for both carmakers and consumers.  “With younger buyers putting a higher value on advanced safety systems for their new cars, semi-autonomous driving systems like automatic emergency braking and blind-spot monitoring are even more in play. Carmakers that make these systems easily affordable stand to increase market share at the expense of those who don’t.”
With some 17 million new vehicles purchased last year, car buying clearly remains a priority with consumers. MotorWeek continues to offer viewers a vicarious experience from behind the driver’s seat as well as from behind the wheel. At the start of its 40th season, MotorWeek will hit the ignition on a broad variety of all-new models including the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid, Porsche 911 Turbo S, Lexus LC 500 Convertible, Lincoln Navigator, Volkswagen Passat, Ford F-150, Rolls-Royce Cullinan, Kia K5, plus a bevy of high-performance cars. Despite soft demand, more and more plug-in electric vehicles are also launching, including the MINI Cooper SE and Mercedes EQC.
MotorWeek is produced and distributed by Maryland Public Television and airs on 90 percent of PBS stations nationwide. With the recent addition of St. Louis, the series can now be seen on public TV stations in all of the nation’s top 25 markets. 10 Electric Vehicles to Watch
Right?
Sales of electric autos were double those from the year before, but they were still dwarfed by their fossil-fuel-powered brethren.
Even so, as Mark Reuss, the General Motors president, recently wrote, “just as demand for gas mileage doesn’t go down when there are more gas stations, demand for better range won’t ease even as charging infrastructure improves.”
That infrastructure is growing, nonetheless.
Many of these are proprietary Tesla chargers, however.
A traditional car, of course, can fill up at 168,000 gas stations across the country in the time it takes to buy a Slim Jim and a Coke.
The evolution toward electrics has given carmakers freedom to play with design — picture Tesla’s jagged-edge pickup — while others are sticking with tried-and-true sedans and crossovers, simply swapping out the drivetrain.
Here’s a look at some of the electric vehicles that are just reaching the market, will soon be available or are expected to arrive in 2021.
Audi e-Tron Sportback: A four-door coupe version of the full-size Audi e-Tron sport utility vehicle, introduced last spring, the Sportback is expected to be available this spring. Designed to look and handle like traditional Audis, the e-Tron models will feel familiar to anyone who knows the brand.
The all-wheel-drive e-Tron S.U.V. charges to 80 percent of its 204-mile range in 30 minutes with a commercial fast-DC charger. Improvements in aerodynamics and battery efficiency should modestly increase the Sportback’s range.
BMW iX3: BMW will start production of its electric S.U.V. next year at its plant in China. The rear-wheel-drive vehicle is expected to provide 286 horsepower and a 273-mile range, according to the European test cycle, which is more optimistic than its American equivalent.
Ford Mustang Mach-E: Ford enlisted its Shelby designers to create a traditional-looking electric S.U.V. that would echo its iconic Mustang sedan. Its first version, a 332-horsepower all-wheel-drive model, will be available late 2020, with a 459-horsepower GT version expected 18 months from now.
The biggest changes, beyond fuel, are inside. A new version of the much-criticized Ford Sync connect service will feature over-the-air updates. Artificial intelligence will monitor a user’s habits and suggest appropriate actions. For example, it may ask if you want to call your mother at a certain time if it notices you typically do that each day.
Natural language comprehension will allow users to state commands in various ways, such as “Take me to Santa Monica” or “I want to go to Santa Monica.”
Mileage will range from an expected 210 to 300 miles, depending on the model. In the “frunk,” or front trunk, the space usually occupied by an engine will offer space designed to hold ice for tailgating; a drain plug will be included.
Mercedes EQC 400 4Matic: Originally expected to arrive in the States next year, the first purpose-built all-electric Mercedes will be delayed until 2021, the company recently announced.
Time to charge to 80 percent will be about 40 minutes with the fastest chargers.
Porsche Taycan 4S, Turbo and Turbo S: The “entry level” version of Porsche’s first electric vehicle, the 4S will be available this spring, starting at about $104,000. (The imminently shipping Turbo costs about $151,000, and the Turbo S is $185,000.)
The two current models — available with 522 or 562 horsepower — will accelerate from zero to 60 miles an hour in 3.8 seconds. The Taycan has a range of just over 200 miles, and it is one of the fastest-charging E.V.s around: A DC fast charger will juice it to 80 percent capacity in 22 minutes. The company expects that by 2025, half of its sales will be either fully electric or hybrid models.
Volvo XC40 Recharge: To cut costs and time to market, Volvo is equipping its existing XC40 S.U.V. with an electric drivetrain. Expected at the end of 2020, for “under $48,000” after incentives, this is the start of a Volvo product road map that will bring out one new E.V. model each year.
Over-the-air updates will be available for all vehicle features. The “completely rethought” infotainment system is based on the Android operating system, with Google Maps, Google Assistant and the Google Play app store embedded within the vehicle so they work without a phone. The 408-horsepower engine is expected to provide 240 miles of range. A high-speed commercial charger will fill the XC40 to 80 percent capacity in 40 minutes.
Byton: Distinguished by many enormous wraparound screens, this Chinese-built S.U.V. will be sold in the United States, at a starting price of $45,000, beginning in the second half of 2021.
If the driver allows, the vehicle will have access to calendar events; knowing that you’re finishing up your spin class, the system could cool the car before you arrive.
Available as a 225- or 300-mile range version, the Byton will be sold directly and through dealers, with its first company store to open in Los Angeles by the middle of next year.
Canoo: One of several hopeful start-ups, Canoo plans to sell its namesake model at the end of 2021.
The use of “steer by wire,” an electronic rather than a mechanical system, eliminates the need for various mechanical components, also allowing for more freedom in the placement of the steering wheel.
Infotainment will be provided through a smartphone connection.
The Canoo, with an anticipated 250-mile range, will be available only through subscription, the price of which (undisclosed as of yet) will cover the vehicle, registration, license and insurance. The subscription can be canceled or rolled over into another model when available, at any time.
Faraday Future: Once left for dead after a splashy premiere three years ago, a planned Las Vegas factory that never got built, and a Chinese founder and funder who went bankrupt, the company is back with a new leader, the former head of Byton; new funding; and a rethought vehicle.
Where once Faraday Future advocated the “bring your own device” approach to infotainment now promoted by Canoo, the current version of the large S.U.V. will sport 11 screens in its ultra-high-end FF91.
The company claims that the FF91 will accelerate from zero to 60 in an astonishing 2.2 seconds (although it’s not clear why anyone would need to), and cost $150,000 to $200,000 when it comes out by September. If there’s demand, the company can build up to 15,000 units annually in a Hanford, Calif., plant that’s smaller than the ambitious one it abandoned in Las Vegas.
The company says it will make money at that volume by selling its hardware and software to competitors. Plans for a smaller, more affordable FF81 exist, and the company hopes to enter “preproduction” by the end of 2020.
Volkswagen ID4 Crozz: VW’s first purpose-built E.V., this compact S.U.V. is due in the States by the end of 2020, priced in the mid-$30,000s after tax credits. This will be followed in 2021 by a larger, Passat-size S.U.V., the Space Vizzion, and then in 2023 by the Buzz, Volkswagen’s electric version of its iconic bus. The vehicles will at first be imported and eventually built at the automaker’s factory in Chattanooga, Tenn.
About the same size as VW’s Tiguan, the ID4 will have a range of 200 to 300 miles. Navigation commands will be shown in a windshield heads-up display, with arrows overlaid on the screen to show when to turn.

Will Cadillac be the new EV brand to watch for?
It’s an odd time for the automotive industry, as traditional automakers scramble to get electric cars out the door. Car companies like BMW who’ve been giants in the auto industry for literally a century are now trying to reinvent themselves to keep up with the quickly changing times. Just a few years ago, BMW was one of the few brands pushing EVs. Now, several brands have some really impressive electric cars and another brand that will soon be making the push comes from left field a bit — Cadillac.
For the life of me, I can’t figure out what the hell GM wants to do with Cadillac most of the time. It’s a shame, too. Cadillac is a brand with an incredibly long history and was once known as the pinnacle of American automotive ingenuity. Now, though, it’s a shell of what it once was and pumps out rebadged Chevys more than anything else.
Cadillac XT4 is a front-wheel drive Chevy with Cadillac badges
Under the helm of Johan de Nysschen, Caddy was starting to show signs of life, with cars like the current Cadillac CTS-V, which is a 640 hp monster. Also, Caddy is developing its own 5.5 liter twin-turbo V8 that would be hand built by one engineer, similar to AMG.
However, de Nysschen was forced out for some reason and now Cadillac’s plan has been flipped around and focused more on front-wheel drive crossovers to appeal to the soccer-mom crowd. Though, there’s a chance that the famed American brand could once again be at the forefront of technological advancement, as GM seems to want to make Cadillac its “lead electric vehicle brand.”
GM is actually off to a good start in the world of electrification. The Chevy Bolt is a fantastic little electric car, one that provides excellent range, good interior tech and a very attractive price. Also, Cadillac is quietly one of the best makers of autonomous technology, as the CT6’s “Super Cruise” system is quite impressive. So the Detroit Giant actually seems to know what it’s doing when it comes to the future.
With that being said, it makes sense to make Cadillac the face of that future. Cadillac is supposed to be the shining beacon of GM’s capabilities and, in turn, America’s automotive capabilities. So putting Cadillac in charge of EV development, based on GM’s new scalable EV architecture, is a smart move. It makes Cadillac the high-tech, high-end luxury brand it’s supposed to be and always should have been.
Cadillac CT6 actually has an impressive Super Cruise
Also, it lets Caddy’s engineers do their thing. For years, I always wished that Caddy would break from GM, as its engineers showed so much promise in its cars but it was obvious the only thing hamstringing the cars was their budget. So with Cadillac heading up GM’s EV tech, it will likely get a bigger budget to create some impressive cars that will spearhead the brand.
Honestly, we’re cautiously optimistic about this. It would be very cool to see Cadillac become one of the industry leaders in EV tech and make some cool electric cars. However, we’ve been let down by Caddy in the past (all the time, actually), so we’re tempering our optimism a bit. Still, it’s hard not to like hearing this news.

Amy Schumer postpones tour dates after posting video of herself throwing up on Instagram
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Amy Schumer has postponed a set of stand-up tour dates after falling ill.
The comedian – who is currently pregnant – was scheduled to due to perform in Los Angeles, Baltimore and Philadelphia.
Schumer first posted a video of herself on Instagram throwing up into a cup, later explaining that the future shows would have to cancelled as she was “sick as hell”.
“Los Angeles, Philly and Baltimore have been postponed. I wish I could be there and I’m going to come as soon as possible.
“I will post here and you will be informed by the venue about new dates as soon as we are ready to confirm them. Please contact the venue with any questions about refunds.
“I’m sick as hell and intend to rest until I’m really better.”
Schumer, 37, married celebrity chef Chris Fischer in February and revealed she was expecting in October.
Alongside the video of herself throwing up, she wrote: “I love doing stand-up more than anything and I hate cancelling shows. I have to postpone some until I feel human again.”
Schumer then attacked a Republican politician who was voted to the US Senate earlier this week.
Cindy Hyde-Smith will be the first woman to represent Mississippi in Congress but her campaign was marred by controversy after she made comments about public hanging.

1/25 Bojack Horseman
A cartoon about a talking horse, starring the goofy older brother from Arrested Development… on paper little about BoJack Horseman screams “must watch”. Yet the series almost immediately transcended its format to deliver a moving and very funny rumination on depression and middle-age malaise. Will Arnett plays BoJack – one time star of Nineties hit sitcom Horsin’ Around – as a lost soul whose turbo-charged narcissism prevents him getting his life together. Almost as good are a support cast including Alison Brie (Glow, Mad Men), Aaron Paul, of Breaking Bad, and Amy Sedaris as a pampered Persian cat who is also BoJack’s agent. Season five touches the live rail of harassment in the movie industry, offering one of the most astute commentaries yet on the #MeToo movement with an episode based centred around an awards ceremony called “The Forgivies”.
Netflix
2/25 Stranger Things
A valentine to the Spielberg school of Eighties blockbuster, with Winona Ryder as a small town mom whose son is abducted by a transdimensional monster. ET, Goonies, Close Encounters, Alien and everything Stephen King wrote between 1975 and 1990 are all tossed into the blender by Millennial writer-creators the Duffer brothers. It was clear Stranger Things was going to be a mega-smash when Barb – the “best friend” character eaten in the second episode – went viral the weekend it dropped.
Netflix
3/25 Daredevil
Netflix’s Marvel shows tend towards the overlong and turgid. An exception is the high-kicking Daredevil, with Charlie Cox’s blind lawyer/crimefighter banishing all memory of Ben Affleck’s turn donning the red jumpsuit in 2003. With New York’s Hell’s Kitchen neighbourhood as backdrop, Daredevil is caked in street-level grit and features a searing series one performance by Vincent D’Onofrio as the villainous Kingpin. The perfect antidote to the deafening bombast of the big screen Marvel movies.
Netflix
4/25 The Staircase
Did he do it? Does it matter considering the lengths the Durham, North Carolina police seemingly went in order to stitch him up? Sitting through this twisting, turning documenting about the trial of Michael Peterson – charged with the murder in 2003 of his wife – the viewer may find themselves alternately empathising with and recoiling from the accused. It’s a feat of bravura factual filmmaking from French documentarian Jean-Xavier de Lestrade, which comes to Netflix with a recently shot three-part coda catching up with the (very weird) Peterson clan a decade on.
Netflix
5/25 Dark
Stranger Things: the Euro-Gloom years. Netflix’s first German-language production is a pulp romp that thinks it’s a Wagner opera. In a remote town surrounded by a creepy forest locals fear the disappearance of a teenager may be linked to other missing persons cases from decades earlier. The timelines get twisted and it’s obvious that something wicked is emanating from a tunnel leading to a nearby nuclear power plant. Yet if the story sometimes trips itself up the Goonies-meets-Götterdämmerung ambiance keeps you hooked.
Netflix
6/25 A Series of Unfortunate Events
The wry and bleak Lemony Snickett children novels finally get the ghastly adaptation they deserve (let’s all pretend the dreadful 2004 Jim Carrey movie never happened). Neil Patrick Harris gobbles up the scenery as the vain and wicked Count Olaf, desperate to separate the Baudelaire orphans from their considerable inheritance. The look is Tim Burton by way of Wes Anderson, and the dark wit of the books is replicated perfectly (Snickett, aka Daniel Handler, is co-producer).
Netflix
7/25 Maniac
If you’re curious as to how Cary Fukunaga will handle the Bond franchise, his limited series, starring Emma Stone and Jonah Hill, drops some delicious hints. It’s a mind-bending sci-fi story set in an alternative United States where computers still look like Commodore 64s and in which you pay for goods by having a “travel buddy” sit down and read you adverts. Stone and Hill are star-crossed outcasts participating in a drugs trial that catapults them into a series of trippy genre excursions – including an occult adventure and a Lord of the Rings-style fantasy. It is here that Fukunaga demonstrates his versatility, handling potentially hokey material smartly and respectfully. 007 fans can sleep easy.
Netflix
8/25 Better Call Saul
The Breaking Bad prequel is starting to outgrow the show that spawned it. Where Breaking Bad delivered a master-class in scorched earth storytelling Saul is gentler and more humane. Years before the rise of Walter White, the future meth overlord’s sleazy lawyer, Saul Goodman, is still plain old Jimmy McGill, a striving every-dude trying to catch a break. But how far will he go to make his name and escape the shadow of his superstar attorney brother Chuck (Michael McKean)?
AMC Studios/Netflix
9/25 Black Mirror
Don’t tell Channel 4 but Charlie Brooker’s dystopian anthology series has arguably got even better since making the jump from British terrestrial TV to the realm of megabucks American streaming. Bigger budgets have given creators Brooker and Annabel Jones license to let their imaginations off the leash – yielding unsurpassable episodes such as virtual reality love story “San Junipero” and Star Trek parody “USS Callister”, which has bagged a bunch of Emmys.
Netflix
10/25 Mindhunter
David Fincher produces this serial killer drama based on the writings of a real-life FBI psychological profiler. It’s the post-Watergate Seventies and two maverick G-Men (Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany) are going out on a limb by utilising the latest psychological research to get inside the heads of a motley assembly of real-life sociopathic murders – including the notorious “Co-Ed” butcher Ed Kemper, brought chillingly to live in an Emmy-nominated performance by Cameron Britton.
Netflix
11/25 The Crown
A right royal blockbuster from dramatist Peter Morgan (The Queen, Frost / Nixon). Tracing the reign of Elizabeth II from her days as a wide-eyed young woman propelled to the throne after the surprise early death of her father, The Crown humanises the royals even as it paints their private lives as a bodice-ripping soap. Matt Smith is charmingly roguish as Prince Philip and Vanessa Kirby has ascended the Hollywood ranks on the back of her turn as the flawed yet sympathetic Princess Margaret. Most impressive of all, arguably, is Claire Foy, who plays the Queen as a shy woman thrust unwillingly into the spotlight. Foy and the rest of the principal cast have now departed, with a crew of older actors – headed by Olivia Colman and Tobias Menzies – taking over as the middle-aged Windsors for season three.
Netflix
12/25 Narcos
This drug trafficking caper spells out exactly what kind of series it is with an early scene in which two gangsters zip around a multi-level carpark on a motorbike firing a machine gun. Narcos, in other words, is for people who consider Pacino’s Scarface a touch too understated. Series one and two feature a mesmerising performance by Wagner Moura as Columbian cocaine kingpin Pablo Escobar, while season three focuses on the notorious Cali cartel. Reported to be one of Netflix’s biggest hits – the company doesn’t release audience figures – the fourth season turns its attention to Mexico’s interminable drugs wars.
Juan Pablo Gutierrez/Netflix
13/25 Master Of None
A cloud hangs over Aziz Ansari’s future after he was embroiled in the #MeToo scandal. But whatever happens, he has left us with a humane and riveting sitcom about an Ansari-proximate character looking for love and trying to establish himself professionally in contemporary New York.
K.C. Bailey / Netflix
14/25 Bloodline
One of Netflix’s early blockbusters, the sprawling soap opera updates Dallas to modern day southern Florida. Against the edge-of-civilisation backdrop of the Florida Keys, Kyle Chandler plays the local detective and favourite son of a well-to-do family. Their idyllic lives are thrown into chaos with the return of the clan’s black sheep (an unnervingly intense Ben Mendelsohn). The story is spectacularly hokey but searing performances by Chandler and Mendelsohn, and by Sissy Spacek and the late Sam Shepard as their imperious parents, make Bloodline compelling – a guilty pleasure that, actually, you shouldn’t feel all that guilty about.
Rod Millington/Netflix
15/25 The Alienist
You can almost smell the shoddy sanitation and horse-manure in this lavish murder-mystery set in 19th New York. We’re firmly in Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York territory, with a serial killer bumping off boy prostitutes across Manhattan. Enter pioneering criminal psychologist Dr Laszlo Kreisler (Daniel Brühl), aided by newspaper man John Moore (Luke Evans) and feisty lady detective Sara Howard (Dakota Fanning).
Kurt Iswarienko
16/25 Love
Judd Apatow bring his signature gross-out comedy to the small screen. Love, which Apatow produced, is a masterclass in restraint compared to 40 Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up etc. Paul Rust is Gus, a nerdish movie set tutor, whose develops a crush on Gillian Jacobs’s too-cool-for-school radio producer Mickey. Romance, of a sort, blossoms – but Love’s triumph is to acknowledge the complications of real life and to disabuse its characters of the idea that there’s such a thing as a straightforward happy ending. Hipster LA provides the bustling setting.
Netflix
17/25 Queer Eye
Who says reality TV has to be nasty and manipulative? This updating of the early 2000s hit Queer Eye for the Straight Guy has five stereotype-challenging gay men sharing lifestyle tips and fashion advice with an engaging cast of All American schlubs (the first two seasons are shot mostly in the state of Georgia). There are laughs – but serious moment too, such as when one of the crew refuses to enter a church because of the still unhealed scars of his strict Christian upbringing.
Netflix
18/25 Chef’s Table
A high-gloss revamping of the traditional TV food show. Each episode profiles a high wattage international chef; across its three seasons, the series has featured gastronomic superstars from the US, Argentina, India and Korea.
Charles Panian/Netflix
19/25 Arrested Development
A disastrous group interview in which actor Jason Bateman “mansplained” away the bullying co-star Jessica Walter had suffered at the hands of fellow cast-member Jeffrey Tambor meant season five of Arrested Development was fatally compromised before it even landed. Yet Netflix’s return to the dysfunctional world of the Bluth family stands on its merits and is a worthy addition to the surreal humour of seasons one through three (series four, which had to work around the busy schedules of the cast, is disposable by comparison).
Netflix
20/25 Altered Carbon
Netflix does Bladerunner with this sumptuous adaptation of the cult Richard Morgan novel. The setting is a neon-splashed cyberpunk future in which the super-wealthy live forever by uploading the consciousness into new “skins”. Enter rebel-turned-detective Takeshi Kovacs (Joel Kinnaman), hired to find out who killed a (since resurrected) zillionaire industrialist while dealing with fallout from his own troubled past. Rumoured to be one of Netflix’s most expensive projects yet, for its second run, Anthony Mackie (aka Marvel’s Falcon) replaced Kinnaman as the shape-shifting Kovacs.
Netflix
21/25 Rick and Morty
Dan Harmon, creator of cult sitcom Community (also on Netflix), finds the perfect outlet for zany fanboy imagination with this crazed animated comedy about a Marty McFly/Doc Brown-esque duo of time travellers. Every genre imaginable is parodied with the manic energy and zinging dialogue we have come to expect from Harmon.
Netflix/Adult Swim
22/25 GLOW
Mad Men’s Alison Brie is our entry point into this comedy-drama inspired by a real life all-female wrestling league in the Eighties. Ruth Wilder (Brie) is a down-on-her luck actor who, out of desperation, signs up a wrestling competition willed into being by Sam Sylvia (podcast king Marc Maron). Britrock singer Kate Nash is one of her her fellow troupe members: the larger than life Rhonda “Britannica” Richardson.
Netflix
23/25 Archer
Deadpan animated satire about an idiot super spy with shaken and stirred mother issues. One of the most ambitious modern comedies, animated or otherwise, Archer tries on different varieties of humour for size and even occasionally tugs at the heart strings.
24/25 Ozark
Breaking Bad for those with short attention spans. The saga of Walter White took years to track the iconic anti-hero’s rise from mild mannered everyman to dead-eyed criminal. Ozark gets there in the first half hour as nebbish Chicago accountant Marty Byrde (Jason Bateman) agrees to serve as lieutenant for the Mexican mob in the hillbilly heartlands of Ozark, Missouri (in return they thoughtfully spare his life). Bateman, usually seen in comedy roles, is a revelation as is Laura Linney as his nasty wife Wendy. There is also a break-out performance by Julia Garner playing the scion of a local redneck crime family.
Netflix
25/25 The Good Place
A heavenly comedy with a twist. Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell) is a cynical schlub waved through the Pearly Gates by mistake after dying in a bizarre supermarket accident. There she must remain above the suspicions of seemingly well-meaning but disorganised angel Michael (Ted Danson) whilst also negotiating fractious relationships with do-gooder Chidi (William Jackson Harper), spoiled princess Tahani (former T4 presenter Jameela Jamil) and ex-drug dealer Jason (Manny Jacinto).
Netflix
The remark was seen as incendiary as her Democrat rival Mike Espy is an African American and Mississippi has a history of lynchings.
