Top 10 Horror Comedies
Tumblr media
Horror comedies offer a delightful blend of frights and laughs, creating a unique genre that appeals to fans of both horror and comedy. Here's a list of ten top horror comedies that have left audiences screaming with laughter:
Shaun of the Dead (2004): Directed by Edgar Wright and starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, this British gem brilliantly combines zombie horror with sharp humor. Shaun, a slacker, finds himself fighting off a zombie apocalypse while trying to win back his ex-girlfriend and reconcile with his mother.
The Cabin in the Woods (2012): Directed by Drew Goddard and co-written by Joss Whedon, this film deconstructs horror tropes while serving up scares and laughs. A group of friends heads to a remote cabin for a getaway, only to find themselves manipulated in a twisted experiment.
What We Do in the Shadows (2014): Directed by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, this mockumentary follows the lives of four vampire roommates living in modern-day New Zealand. Their everyday struggles and conflicts lead to hilarious situations, offering a fresh take on vampire lore.
Evil Dead II (1987): Directed by Sam Raimi, this sequel to "The Evil Dead" amps up the humor while retaining the gore and scares. Bruce Campbell's iconic performance as Ash Williams, battling demonic forces in a cabin, has made this film a cult classic.
Tucker & Dale vs. Evil (2010): Directed by Eli Craig, this film flips the "hillbilly horror" trope on its head. Two well-meaning hillbillies, Tucker and Dale, are mistaken for psychotic killers by a group of college students during a camping trip, leading to hilarious misunderstandings.
Zombieland (2009): Directed by Ruben Fleischer, this post-apocalyptic horror comedy follows a group of survivors navigating a world overrun by zombies. With a talented cast including Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, and Abigail Breslin, "Zombieland" delivers plenty of laughs alongside its zombie mayhem.
Ghostbusters (1984): Directed by Ivan Reitman, this supernatural comedy follows a group of eccentric scientists who start a ghost-catching business in New York City. Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, and Ernie Hudson deliver memorable performances in this classic film.
Gremlins (1984): Directed by Joe Dante, this dark comedy horror follows a young man who receives a mysterious creature called a Mogwai as a pet. Chaos ensues when he fails to follow the three important rules for its care, leading to the spawning of mischievous and malevolent gremlins.
Dead Alive (1992): Directed by Peter Jackson before he became known for "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, this New Zealand splatstick horror comedy is notorious for its extreme gore and dark humor. When a man's overbearing mother is bitten by a Sumatran rat-monkey and turns into a zombie, chaos erupts.
An American Werewolf in London (1981): Directed by John Landis, this horror comedy follows two American backpackers who encounter a werewolf while traveling in England. Mixing humor with impressive practical effects, this film has become a classic of the genre.
These horror comedies offer a perfect blend of scares and laughs, appealing to fans looking for a thrilling and entertaining movie experience.

1st Impression: Tucker & Dale vs. Evil [Red Band]
1st Impression: Tucker & Dale vs. Evil [Red Band]
Tumblr media
I went in expecting this trailer to suck but damn did I get a few laughs. It felt like a redneck Shaun of the Dead which isn’t a bad thing. I see that fan base embracing the craziness of this film.  Alan Tudyk is one of the most underrated comedy actors in the game today which is a shame since the guy is very talented in every role he does. See the insanity for yourselves…

Halloween Picks: 'Tucker & Dale vs. Evil' on Netflix and Amazon Prime
Halloween Picks: Tucker & Dale vs. Evil’ on Netflix and Amazon Prime
Tucker & Dale vs. Evil (2010) turns a classic horror movie trope– the good looking group of city kids tormented by grimy rednecks and hermits in the backwoods – and turns it inside out, creating not so much a horror comedy as a comedy where the clueless characters think they’re in a horror film and act accordingly.
Call it a comedy of errors with a body count: a group of frat boys and sorority…

Day 186: Tucker & Dale vs. Evil (2010)
Hillbillies. A cabin in the woods. Chainsaws. A wood chipper. All of these ingredients make for an exciting slasher film. But none of that even touches the surface of the brilliance that is the under-the-radar film Tucker & Dale vs. Evil.
Tumblr media
A group of college kids decide to take a little camping trip out in the woods. On their way to their campsite, they stop at a small gas station. It’s here they first spot Tucker (Alan Tudyk) and Dale (Tyler Labine), two hillbilly best friends on their way to Tucker’s new summer cabin to do some up keep.
Tumblr media
Dale is exceptionally awkward around women and at Tucker’s prodding, Dale attempts to talk to the pretty college girls. He comes off as a major creeper. Insecure, Dale is pretty disappointed in himself that he can’t ever seem to talk to a girl successfully. Trying to put it behind them, the men head to the new cabin.
Tumblr media
To put it politely, the cabin is a total crap hole. And to make things worse, it’s full of majorly creepy stuff. Clearly the cabin previously belonged to some type of serial killer. The great part is that Tucker and Dale are too naïve to even think it’s weird there are newspaper clippings about murders hanging on the walls. It’s during this part that you realize that Tucker and Dale aren’t the sharpest tools in the shed. In fact, they’re really innocent, pretty sweet guys. This makes what happen seem…well, *almost* plausible.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, the college kids have set up camp. They sit around drinking and telling scary stories. Pretty normal stuff. Chad (Jesse Moss) tells the group of a mysterious Memorial Day Massacre some 20 years before. Laughing the story off, the group decides to go skinny dipping.
Tumblr media
Alison (Katrina Bowden) is off by herself while the rest of her group is already in the water. Tucker and Dale are also at the lake doing some fishing. They spot Alison in her underwear, climbing down a rock into the water. Dale covers his eyes, but Tucker sneaks a prolonged peek. When Dale realizes that Tucker is being a peeping Tom, he scolds him. His shout is loud enough to be heard by Alison, who is promptly terrified and falls into the water. Tucker and Dale freak out, especially when she doesn’t come back up from under the water.
Tumblr media
Here’s where the mayhem begins. Tucker and Dale come to Alison’s rescue, pulling her out of the water into their boat. They’re seen by Alison’s friends who misinterpret Dale’s friendly yell of “We’ve got your friend!” to be that of a kidnapping nature. CHAOS NOW ENSUES. At every turn, the actions of Tucker and Dale, which are undeniably pure in nature, are misread by the group of college kids. They see the men as vicious hillbilly murderers who are trying to kill their friend when in fact it is completely not the case.
Tumblr media
Alison wakes up in the cabin, terrified when Dale enters the room. She very quickly figures out that Dale is incredibly kind and soon she doesn’t fear them at all. In fact, she really likes being with him. They play games and hang out, talking and laughing. While Tucker works on the yard, he begins the series of events that lead to an all out, over the top battle between the college students and the men. One by one, the kids end up killing themselves in ridiculous ways. They continually don’t see what happens and believe that Tucker and Dale are behind the deaths. Tucker and Dale find themselves with several dead bodies on their property.
Tumblr media
I don’t want to go into the deaths too much because honestly, it’s the most entertaining part of the movie. They come up with some really creative ways of killing off the cast one by one and I don’t want to ruin that for anyone. Just enjoy it (as much as that makes me sound like I’m deranged)!
Tumblr media
Eventually Alison is able to talk with her friends and explain the situation. She even manages to convince everyone to sit down and talk about their feelings, using her little psychology knowledge from her undergrad studies. The nice calm discussion gets disrupted and again, all hell breaks loose. Chad shows his true colors during the chaos, turning from confused victim into his own weird breed of insane villain.
Tumblr media
Chad captures Alison and ties her up at a nearby saw mill. Dale must dress up in crazy garb to try to rescue the girl of his dreams. He is able to use his uncanny ability to recall details to bring down Chad and save Alison. After all the chaos dies down, Dale and Alison go out on a bowling date and seem to be very happy to have found each other.
There are so many things to love about this movie. First of all, ALAN TUDYK IS EVERYTHING. We here at Sibling Cinema love Alan Tudyk. For us, he’s the male Allison Janney (I hope my brothers agree, didn’t ask for their thoughts). He’s able to be so versatile as an actor while being completely endearing and unbelievably hysterical. He’s wonderful in this movie, adding his perfect timing to a great script. Tyler Labine is equally as wonderful, playing Dale with massive amounts of charm. You don’t even care that they’re too stupid to realize what’s going on. You just root for them because they’re sweet and funny. Those performances make you laugh until your sides hurt because they’re sincere despite the zany premise.
The writing is for the film is amazing! For someone who loves a good horror film and has watched many throughout my life, it was so great to see nods to tons of classic horror and thriller films. I saw nods to Deliverance, Evil Dead, Fargo, Blair Witch Project, and several other classics. It was like a movie scavenger hunt. The best part was that even though I saw nods to these classics, the writers came up with an original concept for the film. I’ve never seen anything from the “murderer’s” perspective. It’s a great idea that it’s all just a big misunderstanding. The writing is sharp and ridiculously funny. I paused part way through to explain some of it to my roommate who walked in. I was almost crying with laughter just trying to explain the plot. It is a fresh take on the horror genre. I read a review that said it did for horror movies what Shaun of the Dead did for zombie movies and I couldn’t agree more.
I really appreciated the twist where the victim (Chad) becomes the aggressor. You learn about his past and suddenly he becomes completely unhinged. He really is the villain, not the victim. I thought that was very clever and upending the frame we usually have for horror films.
Sure, it’s pretty unbelievable that a super hot girl will end up with a rather simple, chubby hillbilly, but whatever. It’s a small price to pay for the enjoyment of this film. The actors do have a decent chemistry together so that helps even in its implausibility. I have to be honest that I had never heard of this movie before it was mentioned to me by a friend. He asked me to review it for the blog. I added it to my queue on Netflix and it sunk further and further down. It’s a totally under the radar type film, but in the end, I’m so glad that I watched this hilariously weird movie.
Tucker & Dale vs. Evil is worth checking out if you are a fan of campy horror film. Obviously, there is tons of gore and language, so just be aware. The laughs far outweigh anything else, and you’ll enjoy the over the top fun that is the movie.
This film is available to stream on Netflix.
