I went to bed really early last night to get up while it was still dark this morning. I wanted to spend most of the day at Ohan’ali Beach.

It’s beautiful there. It’s also a place that merfolks like to hang out at. I wanted to talk to one. One that knows more about merfolks and their mates. Dad told me some things but I was a teenager then. It’s not exactly comfortable talking to your Dad about certain things. Apollo knows pretty much what I know. So, I figured. If I can talk to one of them that knows more…it may help me.

I got to hang out with a dolphin, I ended up naming her Sparkles. It almost felt like hanging out with a long lost cousin that you actually like and bond with. I couldn’t help but think of Dad and his dolphin.

I ate grilled fruit for an early breakfast and talked a little with fellow mermaid on the swings, but she didn’t seem to know much about our history or the whole mate thing. She said she planned to remain free her whole life.

She did put me in touch with someone who can answer my questions.

Ukupanipo Hekekia Jr. His Dad knew my Dad. That thought made me happy.  I’ve been thinking about Dad a lot lately. Wishing he and Mom were here to help guide me.

“What your Dad told you is right. There has to be a level of trust when you tell someone you are a mermaid.” He paused “But mostly it’s just a feeling deep down inside. In your gut. You just…know.”

“That’s it?” I asked him.

He nodded “I haven’t experienced that myself yet but that is what my Father told me.”

I nodded and sighed.

“Maybe you’re overcomplicating things for yourself.” He suggested.

I hadn’t even told him my story. I suppose he felt that I was asking about it for a reason.

“I can do that at times.” I admitted.

“If you ever decide to come back to the beach. Let me know.” Ukupanipo told me as his cheeks turned pink.

I blinked, I was not expecting that. “I’ll keep that in mind.” I told him, smiling softly. It never hurts to get some attention from an attractive merman.

I spent the next few hours swimming around and just trying not to think. To give my brain a rest.

I returned to the house around nightfall.

I can tell Naya is getting miserable. She’s more than ready for little AJ to make his entrance into the world.

“Let’s go to bed. I’ll rub your back until you fall asleep.” I heard Apollo say as I walked into the living room area after getting ready for bed.

“Oh I love you for that.” Naya said with a smile “I’ll be up shortly.”

Apollo nodded and said good night to me, before heading towards the stairs.

I sat down to watch TV. I didn’t feel ready for sleep, even though I got up early.

Naya looked down at me with the most serious look I’ve ever seen on her face. “Did you figure out who you want to be with?”

“It’s not cut and dry, Naya.” I told her. Though today had given me some clarity.

“It is if you take out what’s expected. What Caleb says. What Dakota says. What’s easiest. You need to focus on who you really want to be with, deep down inside.”

“You’re saying I’m overcomplicating things…” I trailed off, thinking of my conversation with Ukupanipo earlier in the day.

Naya nodded her head.

I suppose I have been.

After a huge dinner, Sulani feasts were built for a dinner table full of Vance Donahues, Rowena headed up to her room with Lorcan. It had been a long night, emotional for a number of reasons. Just being next to him gave her tingles.
