VERY old and uncooked au I have where Viktor (and eventually jayce) end up working for Silco.

(Edited on December 17th, 2024. Added Sky to the plot, edited the way the heist happens, explained a bit more about The Herald, generally added some other details)

PART 1 - VIKTOR (childhood, adolescence, survival)

Singed actually takes the child in. Yeah I know Viktor technically HAS parents but we've never seen em in the show so I'm ignoring them

So Viktor now lives + works for singed. He gets over his morals real quick when faced with a fully equipped laboratory. He's a child, okay? He gets excited and is eventually groomed (I don't mean romantically, just like molded) by singed into agreeing + obeying all the things the older man tells him. Silco joins in on the part later and toys with his brain as best as he can

Singed uses him as a bargaining chip with Silco. An investment, if you will.

A bit of a "future promise" thing. Viktor actually agrees to this because he knows it's the best shot he's got. All the years living alongside Singed have made him into a more cynical/realistic person. He's 13 and already grumbles at "kids these days"

And Silco is an opportunistic man. He looks at this young, blooming genius and goes "yeah, why not? He is your problem, though. Have some money and make me a bomb"

Viktor also gets a pretty decent gun and shooting lessons. His aim is decent enough. He also hangs around sevika A LOT. He recognizes her as the strongest, safest individual if a fight breaks out and tells her ad much. She won't admit it but the praise feels good. She allows him to hover around and he helps her with small things like lighting hee cigarettes or refilling her flask. It's a symbiotic relationship where they both look at each other dead in the eye when someone is saying stupid shit.

So Viktor is like 15 and suddenly faced with even MORE power and recognition, even MORE fundings and accomodations.

This boy pours his life and time into making weapons. His dreams of being a scientist are slowly forgotten as both Singed and Silco effectively turn him into their perfect little genius.

They turn his desire to help against himself, telling him that the only way the under city will ever get better is if they go against piltover and win (which yeah I mean it kinda makes sense) and just general promises and such

Silco is genuinely surprised by how inventive the kid can be, and in return Viktor appreciates the man's offers and words for what it is: a trap he's wilfully walking in.

Silco does NOT feel any affection for the kid. At least not a lot more than he does for sevika or any other loyal worker. He is amused by his intelligence and somewhat entertained by his ideas. He seems Viktor as more of a small dog he's raising, expecting him to develop sharper and sharper fangs. He does care for Viktor in the "one of my youngest workers is more efficient and savvy than five of yours" way

Viktor doesn't feel any affection for Silco, either. He's a really down-to-earth kid, has lived in the fissures all his life and has been coached by singed into how to navigate the under city. He knows singed doesn't really trust the man and doesn't plan on doing so himself. He does love the opportunity he's given, but knows damn well that it's all done for a higher reason.

He does feel a connection with singed, though. It's mutual in a way. More of a mentor-mentee thing than any paternal/familiar relationship, but they're both satisfied with it. Singed respects Viktor and treats him as an equal, which also means he can a bit too harsh on what is essentially still a fragile teen.

They are protective of Viktor only in the way one is protective of their own gun

PART 2 - VIKTOR (last of his teen years, young adulthood, rage)

EVENTUALLY Viktor manages to worm his way into the academy (in the same way he did in canon) while hiding from Silco, Singed and Sevika, and is, instead, rejected. Heimerdinger is too weary of Viktor and his general attitude (for a good reason) and plans on having him interrogated. When he tries to get Viktor to walk alone into a room with him, Viktor panics and starts stuttering out explanations. He knows his position in the under city is conditional. Knows the leash that Silco has around him. The academy could be his safe haven and now he's losing it.

He's also fake-dating Sky while this goes on. Except she's fully convinced they're gonna get married and Viktor is a Homosexual™

Heimerdinger does his best to try and calm him down, however, every word he says makes the situation worse. He's so clearly out of touch, promising things that could never be done.

Viktor is under a lot of pressure and just starts spiraling. Everything the yordle says makes things worse and worse. The commotion calls the school guards attention and Viktor gets almost thrown in jail, all while heimerdinger tries to tell the guards to let him go. Viktor eventually manages to sneak out but fucks his leg up even more in the process.

Sky tries to help, they have a horrible fight and essentially roast each other until they're both kinda crying. Sky cries the most.

He returns "home" and, refusing to be taken back for such a thing, turns his sadness into bright, burning indignation. Silco might be an idiot, he realizes, but he's right about some things. He burns down the uniform after ripping it into shreds.

After all of this, he abandons any dream of ever getting out. Singed looks at him knowingly, tells him that sneaking around is a fine art he hasn't mastered yet, and leaves. Silco welcomes him back with a satisfied smile, and a "see, boy? I was right"

Silco isn't killing Viktor for his betrayal because he smells the heartbreak and KNOWS that this is the time to attack if he wants that boy to be on his side for the rest of his life. Sevika isn't even mad. Just kinda disappointed.

And it WORKS. Viktor is devastated and isolated, and Silco effectively positions himself as the only current logical option. Viktor knows that this is all a shit show but decides that there's nothing to lose by working for the biggest kingpin in the city

This is what begins his transformation as The Machine Herald, or "Herald" for short. His leg is Fucked Up and Singed goes "hey how about I do an unsupervised surgery on you" and Viktor just kinda goes "yeah well why not". He wakes up with more wires than veins in that leg but it hurts a lot less so. Can't win them all can we?

Years go by, Viktor becomes part of silco's inner gang, since Silco is finally sure that this boy has nowhere to run, no one to ask for help. He develops what could be seen as a friendship with sevika. They drink together every so often, trash-talking the rest of the henchmen in hushed whispers in between assignments. She tries to give him life advice in cryptic ways. He kinda gets it. Most of the time.

He makes up with sky and become Best Friends™. In a way. When they're not trying to get each other to come back to Zaun/Piltover

He keeps sky a secret from them all in fear of... Well, of whatever the fuck they could try and do to her if they got mad at him.

He's also a bit of a slut. I mean he's young, hot, kinda part of Zaun's elite, smart... yeah he's getting around. This part is important I swear. No it's not I just want Viktor to get it on. He's constantly sneaking pretty boys in and out of wherever he's staying at that week which is why no one really questions Jayce (see, it was important) the first few days he's in his house after The Trial (idk where the fuck sevika sleeps. Do silco's henchmen just sleep in his house??? Does he provide apartments?? I need to know)

People in the under city actually start talking to Viktor as he gets older, realizing that he's a bit less violent than the rest of silco's thugs and they have a 50/50 shot that he will actually help them in their pleas. This is always weird to him but he endures it for the sake of staying on top of what's being said in the city. And he's also generally a kind soul deep down

He buys from benzo frequently, and Benzo tolerates him because once, very slowly and in a hushes tone, he heard Viktor tell Ekko to never work for anyone with a shark aquarium.

Viktor is quite fond of Ekko. If Silco didn't basically own his soul, he would definitely take the kid in. Which is why he eventually becomes the biggest timebomb advocate.

PART THREE - MEETING JAYCE.

He's in Benzo's shop when he meets jayce.

He goes "yeah I could get him to suck me off probably" and tries to approach

And then jayce pays in GOLD and DOESN'T HAGGLE

And he realizes that this idiot is a piltie. He also realizes that whatever the fuck he just bought and the whole projects he's talking about could be useful for him and silco will not like it if a PILTIE out of everyone outsmarts him in weapon creation. He literally gets in between him and the door with absolutely no idea of what he's going to do (there is absolutely no way he's upping that payment sorry silco you are no match for the Kirammans)

There is no time and he defaults to "oh this is not my bedroom!" mode.

Cue him saying something like "I've never seen such a pretty face in this store. Are you from around here, darling?"

Ekko is gagging in the background.

They flirt yada yada I have the scene but it's too long to write here. U get the idea. I'd anyone wants to read that ask me but for now just use your imagination

Viktor offers Jayce to come back with him to his house for "protection" because "these streets are sooo cruel for foreigners" and Ekko hypes him up. "Oh Yeah Herald here is So Strong and Everyone Respects Him" which is technically not a lie. Jayce gets overwhelmed and accepts. As this is happening the kids are staging the heist but it has not happened yet. Don't ask me about timelines idgaf

They make out a bit, Jayce tells Viktor all about his theory (which is arguably hotter for Viktor) and shows him his notes (because obviously he carries his journal with him)

Viktor is BLOWN AWAY by this. He gets all worked up. Never felt this horny before. They discuss for a while, and Viktor decides that THIS is something he can stand behind. Actual discoveries, not just drawing blueprints after blueprint of the same fucking thing

Anyways

Viktor sort of mildly drugs jayce and steals three of the shiny orbs and then wakes Jayce up and tells him that this was delightful and such.

PART FOUR - Hey Silco Can We Adopt This Boy. For Science

The heist happens the very same way. Viktor hears about it, about the trial, and decides that all these years of work should get him some privileges

He goes "If you're going to change the world, don't ask for permission" and just goes to save Jayce. Originally I had him argue with Silco and Singed to allow him to do this here but yk what? This man is too impulsive to do that. He's breaking his man OUT with two bribed bodyguards and Janna on his side. Sky is 100% on board because she kinda knows Jayce and he's really nice so she doesn't want them to banish him.

Viktor breaks jayce out do NOT ask me how #thepoweroflove and Sky's blessing or whatever. The henchmen get to punch enforcers so they're happy about it.

The "am I interrupting?" Scene happens. It's also too long so.

It takes Viktor a while to convince Jayce to, yk, betray his country and leave everything he's ever known behind, but Jayce was literally about to kill himself and Viktor is talking about change and help and people who actually need it (lies) and he looks so beautiful under the moonlight and he remembered him. So. Really what can one realistically do in this situation if not agree with the criminal who's trying to save you from exile.

They rush back to Zaun, Jayce leaves a hasty suicide note and says he will drown himself in the river and not to search for him (he leaves a slight clue for him being in Zaun as an alibi in case they eventually find him and want to blame Viktor for kidnapping. Which is such a hot and clever thing that Viktor almost kisses him right there), they break into heimerdinger's room via Sky giving them the keys, steal all the equipment they can carry (henchmen & co brought some bags okay??)

When Mel arrives they're gone. She calls for the guards to come but they're waaay out of her reach and Sky is there all beaten up and crying (she agreed to it)

There might be a motorcycle involved. Cyclists Viktor... Yeah. Hot.

When they arrive, he has his very first actual screaming-match kind of fight with Silco and Singed about keeping A Piltie in their territory, but they eventually and very reluctantly give in. Also Jinx is there. So Silco isn't really that preoccupied with who lives with Viktor and more with how to make this child stop wailing.

Silco knows that even a worm will turn. If Jayce does agree to work for them and stays loyal, then they get another good worker. If not, they can always kill him. He's never heard Viktor this adamant about someone before, and damn he's seen the boy walk around with some pretty faces. Maybe this Jayce fella truly is smart.

PART FIVE - JINX AND JAYCE

When Viktor shows up he finds out that silco has adopted a child. Also Sevika doesn't have an arm. Also Vander is dead. So is, presumably, that child with the bad haircut. So is Benzo. Which is a bummer. He liked the store.

Ekko is nowhere to be found. That's a bit sad. Really sad. He sheds a few tears.

Jayce hates everything that's going on around him buts this man is SUICIDAL, basically homeless, penniless and his one and only lifeline is Viktor. Even if he stayed in Piltover no one would've been able to help. He's just kinda going with the flow. Having him gives Viktor his backbone and morals back. Slowly. Very slowly.

Hextech develops WAY slower. Like they're working in a drug den in the middle of what is basically a hastily put together lab there's absolutely no way there's the same conditions. They're doing their best though.

Jayce Is actually really impressed by shimmer and how it can "help" people. He's gaslighting himself ATP and everyone else is enabling him. No Jayce you're just creating an army of drug addicted zombies what do you mean giving power to the people.

Also eventually Silco gives Viktor a laced brace that makes him mildly addicted to shimmer. Viktor is clever enough to realize what's going on but also experienced enough to know that refusal would be seen as an offense. He takes the brace on and off with his own prototypes. Sevika and him both know they're just digging themselves into a deeper hole. With time he just goes "yeah fuck it" and starts regularly using it on his wires for the better performance of his leg. Glorious evolution or something.

Silco actually tries to kill jayce once because he was getting too fucking annoying and self-righteous, but Jinx steps in. He reminds him of claggor (in a bizarre way). She claims that they're both her friends and she loves them and silco just seethes in silence because Why did he become a father.

They help raise her. Kinda. Not co-parenting. More like co-uncling. They're both horrible influences but they aren't worse than Silco's enablement so it's just a very fucked up raising strategies cocktail.

I wrote all of this so I could successfully say that they have a tea party with her.

THEY LOVE LIL JINX OKAAAY. Specially jayce. He takes all his emptiness and sadness and anger and tries to fill it with love for her and Viktor, the only two people he feels are kind of honest to him. He tries to befriend Sevika. Doesn't really work at first.

Also Jayce being jealous of the fact that Viktor got around, specially when he has the audacity to give powder boy's advice (sevika is a STONE TOP LESBIAN you can NOT tell me anything else) right in Jayce's face. Yeah. Miscommunication. Falling in love. Devotion and guilt. Feelings of owing. Hesitant kisses and never said words. YEEES. I know it's a bit tropey but I like it so. Yeah.

Also both Jayce and Vik have long hair. Jinx insisted they let it grow like hers. Jayce's actually reaches his shoulder plates/mid back while Viktor keeps it shoulder length, just long enough to tie it. I think. Still haven't decided since long hair Jayce is too hard to mentally picture but I know he would look GOOD

Yes this also means that Jayce and Vi meet even earlier. They take a look at each other as they both try to calm down jinx and Become Best Friends™

Caitlyn always has a heart attack because YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO BE DEAD. She, like Vi, goes "yeah silco is definitely keeping my sister/brother captive" and they're both like You Will Not Believe This.

Viktor doesn't join them in their adventures because he is Not jumping around the roofs. He uses a cane. Leave him alone jinx no he can't climb the stupid ass tower.

Jinx and Jayce become a sort of "ground control" thing. Jayce is BUFFED that man can stand his own in a fight. He's not as quick or flexible but he makes up for it in pure absolute brawn. They're not actually doing anything useful they're just entertaining Jinx every so often.

alright bitches, screaming into the void again, act two of the second season just dropped and I am sobbing and inconsolable, as always, spoilers for arcane season two under the cut

-CAIT AND MADDIE?????? YOURE FUCKING KIDDING ME?????? HOW DARE THEY. the scream i scrumpt. but okay genuinely, I'm very curious how that dynamic works and started, I really am praying that it's just a casual thing and cait sort of rebounding, because to me caitvi is always gonna be endgame (side note, get it I guess, at least one of the girlies is getting laid)

-also I loved the paint the town blue music intro and how it can be interpreted and the way both sides can be seen with so much nuance but also how both sides can feel black and white about each other

-Mel being a bastard child is genuinely so funny to me with the notion that Mel didn't believe that her mother could fall in love, and now she's stuck with these freaky magic people. it's actually so interesting as it reminds me of the sorcerer class in dnd and how magic is inherent in the blood, but also, if you're a wizard, it's something you learn. as seen with Mel and the people that learn the arcane (the guy that saved baby jayce) (also the artificer which is everyone who utilises modern hextech, but specifically the inventors)

-the reuniting of Vi and Jinx!!! omg the tension, the grudge being held, but also the very clear longing for the sisterhood to be rekindled. and how this time, when Vi hits Isha (even though by accident) there's someone there to smile and ask if she's okay and to keep going. something something breaking the cycle of trauma.

-then to add onto that the fam reunion of Vi Jinx and Vander! and of course the fact that Vi chose to trust, again. despite how many times her trust has been broken and betrayed, she trusted again, and it payed off, because even if only for a couple days, she had a father back. she had a family, this time with a new younger sister addition

-and to add onto that even further!! the reunion of all of them with cait!! all of them are chosing trust and chosing forgiveness to try fight for a greater good and a future they wanted to fund!!

-the small family dynamic in the first episode that is sevika, Jinx and isha is so perfect to me. and I find it so curious that with isha, Jinx wants to leave behind revolution and violence to try and have something bordering on domestic. idk, I just love the three of them and how they would go to any end to save each other

-meeting young vander, silco, and the girls mum! it all started out so pure with so much hope. they wanted to leave a legacy and a world where you could raise children. and though they have failed initially, those children are now picking up the mantle. brimstone and blisters is an amazing phrase and goal

-small side note, I love seeing sevika try to step into a leadership role

-y'all what happened to ekko???? please, why is he on the mural?? I swear he better be in the final act. but I love to see that the fireflys are still thriving

-viktor and jayce truly are doomed yaoi and it's going to doom the whole rest of the narrative... and I kinda love that for them. all jokes aside though, it's amazing to see both of their developments and how viktor grew and created this amazing (if very uncanny valley) society (cult), and jayce, tormented by the touch of the arcane, driven close to madness, is so destructive. and despite one promoting growth, the other destruction, I'm actually not sure which one of them is in the right! like is the hexcore inherently evil and thus viktor and his community, or is Jayce delusional and going to self destruct in the worst possible way? or both! or neither! we'll see

-haha omg Jinx not being recognised and then also being laughed at for her pants

-the warden of stillwater is dead and all I can say is thank fuck 😌

-the scene in the prison! holy fuck. Jinx and sevika releasing everyone and Jinx making the sarcastic proclamation, only to be met with genuine connection from her fellow Zaunites. all of them touching her shoulder as they pass. "we see you, we know that you have done bad, we choose you, you are our hope" is what it says to me. and you can see that it really gets to Jinx, that she's having this holy shit people cherish me moment

-ambessa is amazing and awful. I don't love her but what a character she is. she's driven and corrupt and full of so much love and hate (fuck that other guy tho, the one that always stands near her who I can't be bothered to remember the name of, glad he dies, acab)

-so much diverse animation in these three episodes you absolutely love to see it! vander with his almost abstract view of the world when he's in a rage, only seeing in colours of blood red. the way that isha sees the world in her childlike sketch while reliving moments. the soft and peaceful almost watercolour sketch of vanders mind behind Warwick's animal brain. how much peace and love goes into every detail of this show will never cease to amaze me

-that one guy will never catch a break from Vi and it's the funniest running joke in the series

-Caitlyns face when Vi calls her cupcake

-the way Jinx draws her name under her eye with Vi's pitfighter paint in the same fashion as Vi's tattoo. it really says to me that Jinx still idolises her and wants to be like her sister still, no matter how much they've changed. while also accepting that there are parts of each other that neither want

-Caits character... ooh boy this one's a doozy. so yes, fascist dictator style, but we still see remorse from her. a want for things to be better for everyone. the deep desire to be able to change things for the better without mass acts of violence. but again clinging to the need for revenge. at least at the start. she still very much betrays ambessa when she sees how much pain she's willing to cause to fuel her own purpose though. I think she's come to terms with the fact that what she wants is something she has to try to achieve without becoming a monster. she's deeply flawed. she's amazingly complex. I'm in love with her. she's a cop. she's a heartbroken daughter. she wants to fix the world. she may have broken it a little under the deeply misguided tutelage of Noxus. I really can't wait to see her in the final act. especially since I believe she is going to be part of the revolution now

-yknow, genuinely thought the pitfighter arc was gonna be longer than that but I'm not too bothered by it. I'm also really glad to see that Vi is allowed to be wrong! she is amazing but also makes a lot of mistakes, and she has people in her life that aren't afraid to call her out for her shit. I feel like a lot of people think she can do no wrong because she feels like the main protagonist, but the show continues to remind you that she's just a person, and one who is deeply fucked up by her trauma, but she is trying her best

-also just noticed the detail of the black rose having the red galaxy as their sort of ethereal plane, while viktors is a deep blue. I wonder if that's to do with the combating magics that they posses and if they are in opposition, whether thematically, morally, or any other kind of way. just thought it was cool

-also is it just me or does the dog on Vi's jacket look like a domesticated version of the wolf that Singed used to revive Vander??

-the way that both Vi and Jinx sound like their mother

-the hug? I actually cried

-and finally. omg isha why??!?!?!?!? holy fuck I know that it was desperate, but child just pulled a season one act one powder move. what is the fallout of this explosion gonna look like? are we going to lose vander for a second time? is isha gonna die? how will our main crew fare? I can't wait for the final act. it's gonna be amazing!!!

-I lied, final final thought, Cait disarming Vi was so funny (and also hot)

Arcane Competitive Dance AU

i dont think you realize that i CRAVE comp. dance au's down to the bone as a former comp. dancer so HERE IS MY BRAIN CHILD!!!

we start off pretty basic, with the City of Greater Piltover essentially split into two main area, New Piltover and Zaun. within the two main areas lies two dance studios, both well known and well loved in their respective communities. for the amount of time the studios have been open, the have had a sort of "rivalry" within it's leaders (dw the kids are mostly chill with eachother). this brings us to the main bones of the au!!

Zaun Dance Movement (ZDC)

run by co-owners and partners Vander and Silco Lane-Shimmerson

they do a lot of community work within Zaun since it's mostly lower class

they are known for their insane Hip Hop routines that are highly inspired by Zaunite break-dancing as well as their acro routines

they offer an affordability fund program for people who are interested in dance but the cost can be too high for the household

for the recreational program they offer the general classes such as ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop, acro, musical theatre and open, as well as holding classes for adults, low-impact for the elderly, and adaptive movement for anyone with a mental or physical ability

they are known for being a family friendly and community based studio

has a KILLER fundraising team omg like genuinely so good they raise so much for comp season

Piltover Dance Corps (PDC)

founded by Cecil Himerdinger (trust me on this guys-)

owned currently by Cassandra Kiramman

they take a more intense look at dance, while still being family forward

"rich kid" studio

they put on a showing of the nutcracker every holiday season to raise funds for comp season

also has an affordability fund that's pretty good tbh

it definitely helps that Cass Kiramman is RICH so she puts a good amount of funds into it herself

they have a pianist come in for their ballet/pointe classes (just a fun fact tbh)

a good amount of their students go on to go professional later in life

known for their downright gorgeous ballet and tap programs

You Lost Your Job, Now What?

My cousin, age 40, married, with two kids, working with a Delhi-based start-up at a decent seven-digit salary, just lost his job!

With no cash flow to sustain operations owing to the Covid-19 pandemic and its impact on the economy, the start-up is on the verge of closing shop. To say the least, my cousin was unprepared for this.

We have been more like great friends over the years, and so he called seeking my advice. What follows below is part of the detailed email (edited for personal stuff) I sent him about how he can deal with the sudden loss of income and livelihood, and how he may move forward.

I don’t have an experience of getting fired at job but I have been through almost similar uncertainty and sudden loss of income after quitting my job in 2011.

The reason I am sharing this with you is because, given how things are falling apart all around (Uber just fired 3700 people, all at one go, on a Zoom call!), I thought the advice may benefit you or someone close to you who is facing a similar predicament either through a job loss, salary cut, loss of business income, or even complete closure of business.

I am not a financial advisor. What follows below is plain, simple advice that I offered to my brother. Nothing more, nothing less.

It was nice talking to you. I am sorry to know about your job loss, but as they say, sh*t happens!

Anyways, before I share what I think you can do to deal with the situation and also a way to move ahead, let me quote Nassim Taleb who said that the three most harmful addictions are heroin, carbohydrates, and a monthly salary.

So, knowing that you don’t do heroin and eat less carbs, let me congratulate you for you can finally get over your addiction of the monthly salary, at least for the time being.

Coming to my advice, some of which I already offered to you on phone, here it is –

1. Being fired at work is among life’s most stressful events. And so, my first line of advice is not financial, but emotional. Millions of people around the world have lost their jobs, or are on the verge of doing so, and so you are not alone. There is no doubt an unexpected job loss can rock your world, but it can also prove to be an experience that helps you grow and leads you to a new and better work and life ahead.

A job loss, even if it looks unexpected, is not a one-time event. It often involves the stages of denial, then anger, then bargaining, then depression, and finally acceptance. These are the five stages of grief, and a job loss must go through these as well.

I know you have been struck by grief. Now, I may sound a bit harsh, but you have two options to deal with these stages – one, you head fast from denial or anger towards acceptance, because that is the place you will anyways end up (moving fast will be less painful), or two, you take your time, keep ruing your situation, and go slow (more painful, simply because emotions will be involved for a greater amount of time).

Also, remember that the longer you take to come out of the situation emotionally, the greater and worse emotional issues you will impose upon your near and dear ones, especially your spouse, parents, and kids. So, better you get over the emotional hangover of a job loss soon.

Cry at times if you want, but please do not break. Acknowledge your emotions, then move on. Whenever you find yourself alone and struggling, talk to your spouse and/or your best friend. They can provide you comfort and encouragement and help you reign in those negative emotions.

2. My second advice is financial. The financial impact of job loss is probably the toughest challenge to face during this time, and so it is critical for you to develop a plan that reduces as much financial stress on you and your family as possible. Here are a few steps you may want to take to deal with such an unexpected event, so that you don’t end up making any desperate decisions –

List down all money you have in the form of household savings and any income that you may earn through severance; plus any income your spouse may be earning. Then list down all your expenses – food, rent, EMIs, utilities (power, gas, Internet, phone), transportation, educational expenses, insurance premiums, credit cards, eating out, shopping, other monthly payments and expenses, etc., along with any new expenses. Then go through your expenses one by one, cut out all non-essential lifestyle-related items, and find ways to lower even the essential ones that you can. Simply put, analyse your variable expenses well, and find ways of doing away with some of them. Focus on both the large and small expenses, because holes, small or large, can sink a ship.  

Dip into your emergency savings to meet your living expenses. But be miser in using that too. Even if you thought earlier that that fund was good for 6-8 months, work on a lean budget so that the fund runs for, maybe, 10-12 months. Maybe! I know a lot of people who are used to saving regularly have a hard time dipping into emergency savings but surviving a period of unemployment is exactly why you have been saving this money. When you are back on your feet again, and I’m sure you will soon, you can replenish the funds. But for now, your emergency savings can be put to good use.  

Hide that credit card please! Do not, I repeat, do not assume that you can use that Gold or Platinum card to defer cash outflow by 50-60 days. After a job loss, if you will not buy something on cash, please, please, please do not use your credit card for that. It will be a financial disaster, given the uncertainty around your future income and the interest rates that get charged on deferred credit card payments. Question each expense real hard.  

Stop your SIPs or other new investment if need be. But do not sell your investments if you have enough cash as emergency fund that can last you 6-8 months or more (such is an emergency for which emergency funds need to be created). If you have a credit card payment pending, use your savings to pay that off. But remember, the idea for now is to free up your cash flows, instead of spending or investing it away. Still, re-evaluate your existing investments. If you have to spend more than your emergency funds, assuming you don’t create another source of income within the next 10-12 months, you may have to dip into your investments. So, re-evaluate now which ones you would redeem first.  

Check your health and life insurance. If your ex-employer provided these, and you did not have them personally, try to get them now. Without an ongoing income, insurance companies may seek greater number of proofs from you (like IT returns etc.) but having health and life insurance policies is a must, former for every member of the family and latter for the earning member. Especially, if a health emergency strikes at these times, and you are not covered, it may eat up your emergency fund faster than you would have envisaged.  

Evaluate your debt if you have any. Start by prioritising repayment of higher cost debt, like credit card debt or personal loan. Call you bank and ask for some relief on your EMI payments. Interest will still accrue but you will not be fined for missing payments for around two months, depending on your bank’s policies. Especially in these uncertain times, it is important for you to really know where you stand financially, and assessing your liabilities is one of the most important things you would do, largely because a third party is involved here who may not understand or appreciate enough what you may be going through.  

Ask for help when you need it. Do not shy away from it. Asking your spouse, or parents to chip with monetary, if they can, and non-monetary help is a good idea. Also seek the services of a good, honest financial advisor, if you think you cannot get your head around the financial situation. The advisor can help you set a budget, optimise your spending, and give you some clear-headed advice on cash, debt and investments.

3. My next advice is social. There is no point in not accepting that you have lost your source of income (for time being), and thus don’t shy away from explaining to your friends or family that you need to cut back right now. By eliminating social expenses like eating out or attending parties that may be avoided, you can free up cash to cover your essentials and also keep yourself from racking up new credit card debt, which will cause more financial stress.

4. Final advice – start preparing for the future, right away. Ask people you know of, maybe your ex-boss or ex-colleague for work options. A job loss can be a blessing in disguise. “Yuuri we’ve discussed this. I’m the fun one and you’re my impulse control. Remember?” Phichit grinned as he took another sip of coffee then sat on the counter. “Oh, after practice we should totally go out and splurge on a dinner okay? Yep, we’re doing that and then we can go to the club!”

Yuuri furrowed his brows then hummed and shrugged. “I actually can’t tonight Phichit, I have something to do. You can go out though~!” He grinned at Phichit then retreated to his room with Vicchan scampering after.

It took Phichit a beat or two to realize what happened before he slammed his coffee down. “Yuuri come back out here and wash your tea things!” He listened to Yuuri’s laughter for a few minutes before grabbing a monster energy drink from their mini fridge and downing it while sipping his coffee. “Little jerk.”

“Chris! Mama wouldn’t let me hold a skating party at the rink.” Viktor whined as he leaned against his best friend and pouted.

“Well it’s mid Fall so either way he probably can’t be there mon ami.” Chris practically purred into Viktor’s ear before Viktor pulled away and pouted rather dramatically.

“Why wouldn’t he be there Chris? Does he not like me? I knew I should’ve given him a faberge! A yacht! Anything!I don’t think I’ll ever recover.” Viktor whined as he sunk down in his chair.

Chris sighed as he ran a hand over his face then took his glasses off and set it on his computer. “Well he’s a figure skater, Viktor.”

“What does that have to do with my unrequited love?” Viktor frowned then sat up and fixed his hair before slipping his Vineyard Vines hat back on.

“He has qualifiers soon, I may not be able to qualify this year but I still keep up with it. That Phichit kid keeps posting updates on his insta and snapchat too. You should follow him so you can do less literal stalking and do it on the internet like the rest of us.”

Viktor pouted then placed a finger on his lip before he sat up. “Good idea Chris, we’ll hold a viewing party at the rink for Yuuri’s qualifying match!”

“I-I didn’t say that Viktor.” Chris sighed then shook his head. “Nevermind, but make sure it’s big enough for everyone to see.”

Viktor clapped then stood. “Alright, I have physics in ten. I’ll bring a starbucks back for you.” Chris slid his glasses back on then saluted Viktor as he walked out with his computer. As soon as Viktor was stepping out onto the quad he slid his sunglasses on and winked at the large crowd that immediately began to gather around himself.

He made his way across the quad, his hair practically gleaming in the mid fall sunlight. As he walked into the crowded classroom his eyes found Katsuki Yuuri who was sitting in the back and staring out a window. Viktor grinned before rushing over and nearly dropping his computer in his haste to get to the empty seat next to Yuuri.  “Hi Yuuri~!”

Yuuri let out a screeching noise similar to that of his roommate Phichit before hiding behind his fluffy sweater and coffee mug filled with tea. “Uh w-well I don’t think I can? N-not that I don’t want to I just can’t?” He smiled nervously then took a sip of his rose tea to avoid making eye contact with the pouting Viktor.

“But Yuuri~ We would have so much fun! We have jet skis and we can go paddleboarding together before swimming at sunset.” Viktor pouted as he watched Yuuri keep his eyes away from Viktor’s.

“I have competitions, the first ones that I already did aren’t that important but they help for the important ones.” Viktor pouted for a few more seconds before positively lighting up. “That reminds me! We are having a viewing party here for your competition~!”

Yuuri rubbed the back of his neck then smiled slightly and shook his head. “Ah! Uh w-well if you were going to do that the connection doesn’t always work and uh Phichit already talks about it enough you probably wouldn’t miss much if he told you what happened.”  He grinned, albeit a bit nervously, then went back to sipping on his tea.

Viktor hummed thoughtfully, not paying attention when the professor came in and began to talk about centrifugal force and centripetal force. Yuuri took careful notes, making sure to get every detail down before the assignment was passed around.

While a majority of the class worked on the assignment Yuuri walked up to the professor, having finishing most of the following month’s work and spending many nights studying and doing multiple assignments. Yuuri spent the next few hours doing his tests while the others did an essay. Once he sat down again he rubbed his eyes and grabbed his phone out of his bag to see if Celestino texted him. Viktor leaned over Yuuri shoulder, not bothering to do the assignment just yet in favor of spending time with the blushing Yuuri. “What were you doing Yuuri?”

For the second time that day Yuuri flew nearly three feet in the air before stammering and closing his eyes to take a deep breath. “Well I had to do my tests instead of making them up when I return for longer than a week or two.” He smiled nervously as he red through the e-mail Ciao Ciao had sent. Phichit jumped on Yuuri as soon as he walked into the dorm, catching a selfie before climbing off and grinning. “Congrats on qualifying Yuuri!”

“Thanks Phichit.”Yuuri was laughing as he set his back down next to the door then bit his lip. “So, I finally took care of all of my classes so I can actually travel without having to think about physics or psychology or engineering or anything.” He smiled then walked over to the small couch and plopped down, closing his eyes in the process. Phichit huffed slightly as he walked over then picked Yuuri up off the couch and settled down with Yuuri now in his lap. “Phichit! I could’ve moved!” Yuuri was blushing a familiar red as Phichit rolled his eyes and pulled his phone out to post the selfie he had just taken.

“Don’t give me that excuse of you being too heavy again babes, I know you aren’t.” Yuuri whined slightly then took his glasses off and leaned his head against Phichit’s shoulder. “So, Viktor invited me to go on his yacht?”

Phichit raised an eyebrow at his roommate then grinned and set his phone to the side. “Oh he did now? When did you guy start dating Yuuri? So scandalous!”

Yuuri laughed as he shook his head then rubbed his eyes as Vicchan hopped onto his lap. “We’re just in physics together, he said that he was going to hold a viewing party for the skates I”m in.”

Phichit laughed then nodded. “Chris told me, Viktor’s extra. He is hot though to get it Yuuri. Go get that ass.” Yuuri choked on air as he sat up fully, Vicchan nearly falling off, then turned his wide doe eyes to Phichit’s gleaming ones and let out a shrieking noise at the back of his throat. “Phichit! I just said that we were in physics together and that he wanted to see the skates when did getting together with him cross your mind?!”
