#True love

this one isn't as powerful or moving as others, but i wanted to share it.

i was abused for 19 years of my life by my blood family, my birthgiver being the perpetrator. i didn't know love, unconditional support, i didn't know what freedom meant, i didn't get to have a childhood.

when my husband and i started dating, I was 19 and fresh out of dropping out of college. i was realizing that the abuse and pain and suffering i felt came from my family, and so after 6 months, my husband and his family took me in.

it took me a long time to get comfortable, get used to things. 5 years to be exact, but my story takes place about a month into having moved in. i had never smoked weed before, obviously, so he was gently guiding me into my first experience. it was truly electric, and when we went inside and kissed it was like seeing a kaleidoscope of colors.

it was just after his birthday, and there was still pie left in the freezer so we decided to take a dip into that. high and silly goofy, we placed it on the counter and i realized we only had one fork. i asked, sincerely, if it was okay to share the fork, because i had never dated and didn't have any proper social cues. he just bust out laughing, and i couldn't help but start laughing either, and he said "of course we can share the fork! we're dating!" and that's the moment i started to realize that some things aren't supposed to be tedious, most things aren't supposed to make you feel like you have to ensure everyone won't get upset with you. he gave me the key to open my own door that somehow he had found along the way and returned it to me that night.

a decade later and we're still here, sharing various cutlery and meals, sharing life and soft memories and love. i wish this, so deeply, for everyone ~

As someone who's been a lover of traditional folk music from the British Isles for several decades, one thing I've learned is that "True Love" didn't always mean what you think it means. In the older songs, "true love" is not some mystical quality, some type of connection that is magically better than other Loves. No. A love that is "true" merely means that your Love is "true TO YOU." "True" as in faithful and loyal and trustworthy. A lover who will stand by you and with you no matter what comes. True the way a good sword is True. True the way a good knight is loyal. The contrast is "False Love," which is a lover who betrays you, who cannot be trusted.

"True Love" isn't something you find, it's a vow and a choice that you make, every day, to BE TRUE.
