The Unexplained Mystery of Granger
A young man, Granger Taylor was a mechanical genius that was self-taught. He dropped out of school in the eighth grade, however, at the age of only fourteen he built a one-cylinder automobile which is now on display the Duncan Forest Museum along with a steam locomotive that he hauled out of the woods and restored. At age seventeen he overhauled a bulldozer that no one else could repair. He built a replica of a World War II fighter plane that was snatched-up by a collector for $20,000.
Granger always wondered how Flying Saucer were powered. He built his own out of two satellite dishes, one top and one bottom, as an inspiration. His “flying saucer” became a home-away-from-home with couch, TV and a wood stove. He would often sleep in his “space craft”.
He later said he was in contact with extraterrestrials that were going to show him how their technology works. He told everyone he was going for a trip on an alien space ship. Then one night in November of 1980 he disappeared and left a note for his family. To this day, despite an RCMP investigation, he has never been found, nor have they found any possible clues as to his whereabouts.
The Granger Affair is certainly a great Canadian mystery. Surely a man of his obvious mechanical talents would not go unnoticed had he simply slipped away in the night. After a four year investigation authorities haven’t a single lead to where he might be.
The Granger Taylor Flying Saucer rests on stilts in the backyard of the Taylor home at Duncan on Vancouver Island. It is a mute memorial to its builder, young Granger Taylor.
“He built his spaceship out of two satellite receiving dishes and outfitted it with a television, a couch, and a wood-burning stove. He became obsessed with finding out how flying saucers were powered, spending hours sitting in the ship thinking and often sleeping there,” wrote Douglas Curran in his book: In Advance of the Landing: Folk Concepts of Outer Space (1985).
Then one November night in 1980 Granger Taylor simply disappeared.
He left behind a yard strewn with old tractors; machine engines, vintage automobiles, a bulldozer, as well as a note which read:
Dear Mother and Father, I have gone away to walk aboard an alien ship, as recurring dreams assured a 42 month interstellar voyage to explore the vast universe, then return. I am leaving behind all my possessions to you as I will no longer require the use of any. Please use the instructions in my will as a guide to help. Love, Granger.
The forty-two months were up in May 1984 and his parents, Jim and Grace Taylor, leave the back door unlocked in case their son shows up. But he never has.
Granger Taylor left school in the eighth grade and found work as a mechanic’s helper, showing a flair for repairing machinery. At the age of fourteen he built a one-cylinder car which is on display at the Duncan Forest Museum. He constructed a replica of a World War II fighter plane, and he left behind his silver-and-red flying saucer.
He told a friend a month before he disappeared that he was in mental contact with someone from another galaxy and that he was in receipt of an invitation to go on a trip through the Solar System.
“On the night that Granger disappeared, ” wrote Curran, ” a storm struck the central part of Vancouver Island. Hurricane winds were reported and electrical power was knocked out. Granger vanished, along with his blue pick-up truck.
“After four years of ‘exhaustive checks’ of hospital, passport, employment, and vehicle records, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police have not uncovered a single clue as to the whereabouts of Granger Taylor. ‘I can hardly believe Granger’s off in a spaceship, ‘his father said. ‘But if there is a flying object out there, he’s the one to find it.’ ”

A Little Catch Up on My Life and Travels
My last post was about selling our beloved place in Mexico. I haven't posted since then, but I've been busy, both with closing down the business, and then taking to the road.
I'm writing this from a hotel room in San Antonio, Texas. We have just finished a 5 day vacation with family, and my husband and his brother attended 3 days of the Formula One in Austin. They are very close to each other, and I think they enjoyed everything about their 3 days together. My sister in law and I are also close, and we enjoyed hanging out: there was a day of walking and checking out the River Walk, and a couple of days of relaxing and reading, (things we both enjoy).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Today we parted ways, with my BIL and SIL returning home and Craig and I staying one more night then flying onward to Mexico to meet up with my dad and a friend. We are headed to the town where we have spent 16 happy years, but this time we're not staying at our own place. Instead we are staying with our former property manager who also has rental apartments. While we will be doing many fun things with our local friends, we will NO be painting or fixing things, (a staple of our previous trips). It will be a different trip for sure.
However, I started my travels the last week of August, when my sister invited me to accompany her and my niece back to Ontario, (where my niece attends university). While I've passed through Toronto, both just within the airport, and by vehicle, I've never actually spent any time there, so I jumped at the opportunity. It was a fun and busy 5 days, sightseeing, catching a Blue Jays baseball game, and touring the infamous Kingston penitentiary, as well as getting my niece settled into her new house.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In between the two above trips, we took our travel trailer down the Washington and Oregon coasts, before cutting into more central California to Yosemite National parks. We stayed at both National Parks and State Parks, and boy to do I have a lot to say about those...however, that will be in another post. We had two nights in the San Francisco Bay area, staying in fabulous new regional park in the East Bay, where we spend an unexpected $900+USD when the water pump, followed by the serpentine belt gave out in our truck! Fortunately, we were in a big centre with lots of access to mechanics and parts!
We picked up friends who arrived from Scotland and together the 4 of us made our way back to Canada, via wine tastings and microbreweries!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We loved catching up with family en route, and it was fun to play tour guide to our Scottish friends! We took them out to my favourite place in the world, (the west coast of Vancouver Island), as well as visiting the famous Butchart Gardens, (in the POURING rain), finishing with 2 nights in Vancouver.
So...I've definitely not been lollygagging or wallowing in sorrow over the sale of our place, although when I see it tomorrow evening for the first time since the sale, I may have a wee wallow. Until next time...

Navigating the Roads with Peace of Mind: Roadside Assistance in Vancouver
Tumblr media
Vancouver, British Columbia, is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, diverse culture, and thriving urban life. But like any other bustling city, Vancouver's roads can be unpredictable, and breakdowns or emergencies can happen at the most inconvenient times. This is where roadside assistance in Vancouver becomes a lifesaver for both residents and visitors alike. In this blog, we will explore the importance of roadside assistance services in Vancouver, the key players in the market, and how they contribute to a safer and more enjoyable driving experience.
The Need for Roadside Assistance
Driving in Vancouver can be an exhilarating experience, with its picturesque landscapes, coastal routes, and mountainous terrain. However, it can also present challenges, especially for those unfamiliar with the area or the occasional adverse weather conditions. Whether you're a local resident or a tourist exploring the city, the need for roadside assistance can arise at any moment.
Unpredictable Weather: Vancouver's weather is notorious for its sudden changes. Rainfall can be heavy, and fog can reduce visibility on the roads. These conditions increase the risk of accidents and breakdowns.
Mountainous Terrain: Vancouver is surrounded by mountains, and many roads wind through these rugged landscapes. Steep inclines and declines can put a strain on vehicles and lead to mechanical issues.
Heavy Traffic: The city's traffic can be overwhelming during rush hours, which can lead to overheating and other car problems.
Tourism: Vancouver attracts millions of tourists every year. Many of them rent cars to explore the city, making them more susceptible to unfamiliar roads and potential mishaps.
Roadside Assistance Services in Vancouver
Fortunately, Vancouver boasts a range of roadside assistance services to ensure that help is just a phone call away when you need it most. These services offer various benefits, including:
Emergency Towing: When your vehicle breaks down or is involved in an accident, getting it safely off the road is a top priority. Roadside assistance services in Vancouver can quickly dispatch tow trucks to your location to transport your vehicle to a repair shop or a safe storage facility.
Battery Jumpstarts: Dead batteries are a common issue for drivers everywhere. Whether it's due to extreme weather or simply leaving your headlights on, roadside assistance can send a technician to jumpstart your vehicle and get you back on the road.
Flat Tire Assistance: Flat tires can happen at the most inconvenient times, but you don't have to struggle with changing a tire on the side of the road. Roadside assistance services in Vancouver can send a professional to replace your flat tire quickly.
Fuel Delivery: Running out of gas in an unfamiliar area can be frustrating. Roadside assistance can bring you enough fuel to get you to the nearest gas station.
Lockout Services: Accidentally locking your keys in your car is a common mistake. Roadside assistance can help you regain access to your vehicle without causing any damage.
Emergency Repairs: If your vehicle experiences a minor mechanical issue that can be fixed on the spot, roadside assistance technicians are trained to provide temporary repairs to get you back on the road.
Key Players in the Vancouver Roadside Assistance Market
Several reputable companies provide roadside assistance services in Vancouver, ensuring that you have options when it comes to choosing the right service for your needs. Some of the key players in the market include:
BCAA (British Columbia Automobile Association): BCAA is a well-established and trusted name in roadside assistance in British Columbia. They offer a range of services, including emergency roadside assistance, trip planning, and automotive maintenance services.
CAA (Canadian Automobile Association): CAA is another prominent player in the roadside assistance industry, with a strong presence in Vancouver. They provide a wide range of benefits to their members, including emergency assistance and discounts on various services.
Local Towing Companies: In addition to national and regional associations, many local towing companies offer roadside assistance services. These companies are often highly responsive and can quickly assist you in your time of need.
Insurance Providers: Some insurance companies offer roadside assistance as an add-on to their policies. This can be a convenient option if you prefer to have all your automotive services bundled together.
The Benefits of Roadside Assistance Memberships
To fully enjoy the benefits of roadside assistance in Vancouver, many residents and visitors opt for membership with a reputable provider. These memberships typically include the following advantages:
Peace of Mind: Knowing that help is just a phone call away provides a sense of security and peace of mind while driving in Vancouver.
Cost Savings: Roadside assistance memberships often come with added benefits like discounts on travel, accommodations, and automotive services.
Convenience: Membership often includes access to mobile apps that make requesting assistance even more convenient.
Priority Service: Members typically receive priority service, ensuring that help arrives quickly.
24/7 Availability: Roadside assistance services are available round the clock, so you're never stranded regardless of the time of day or night.
Conclusion
Roadside assistance in Vancouver is a vital service that offers a safety net for both residents and visitors navigating the city's diverse and sometimes challenging road conditions. With unpredictable weather, mountainous terrain, heavy traffic, and the potential for accidents or breakdowns, having a reliable roadside assistance service on your side is a wise investment.
Whether you choose a membership with a reputable association like BCAA or CAA, or prefer to rely on local towing companies or insurance providers, the peace of mind that comes with knowing help is always within reach is invaluable. So, before you hit the road in Vancouver, make sure you have the support of a trusted roadside assistance provider, ensuring your journey is as safe and enjoyable as possible.

Playlist: Jaunty Man-Made Disaster Songs
Yep, you heard right, have some Jaunty Man-Made Disaster Songs!
(Direct link: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1DORgh2Wzu3lSXyrQ0Yr09?si=f0sm-cZZS--HcOG49rcAww)
1 hr 6 min. Largely folk music. I can't really explain why I started this but it's probably some sort of 2020 coping mechanism. To qualify for this playlist, a song had to:
1) be referencing an actual historical disaster that was either caused by human actions, or an actual historical natural disaster that was actively made worse by human actions        AND 2) have a tune/tempo that was disconcertingly cheerful.
Here’s the playlist!
1) The Titanic Disaster - The Two Man Gentlemen Band Shipwreck - April 15, 1912
The sinking of the Titanic due to hitting an iceberg; made much worse by the insufficient lifeboats.
2) Dance Band on the Titanic - Harry Chapin Shipwreck - April 15, 1912
The sinking of the Titanic due to hitting an iceberg; made much worse by the insufficient lifeboats.
3) The Sinking of the Reuben James - Arlo Guthrie with The Dillards Shipwreck - October 31, 1941
The sinking of the USS Reuben James by a German submarine prior to the US entering WWII.
4) The Night of the Johnstown Flood - Rock Creek Jug Band Flood - May 31, 1889
A dam that created a lake where rich people fished collapsed, flooding the town of Johnstown, Pennsylvania and killing more than 2,200 people.
5) The Bridge Came Tumblin' Down - Stompin' Tom Connors Bridge Collapse - June 17, 1958
An engineering miscalculation during construction of the Second Narrows Bridge in Vancouver, Canada caused the structure to collapse, killing 19 people.
6) So Long, It's Been Good To Know Yuh - Woody Guthrie Drought - 1930s
US colonizers dug up the long-rooted prairie grass and precipitated major erosion of the Great Plains, aka the Dust Bowl. Combined with drought, it created dust storms, crop failure, and economic devastation.
7) Rox in the Box - The Decemberists Mining Accident - June 8, 1917
The 1917 Speculator Mine disaster was the most deadly mining accident in US history; 169 copper miners asphyxiated during a fire caused by a carbide lamp.
8) The Oil Song - Steve Forbert Pollution - several years
Lists several oil spills; Olympic Games (December 27, 1976), Argo Merchant (December 15, 1976), Amoco Cadiz (March 16, 1978), Ixtoc I oil spill (June 3, 1979 – March 23, 1980).
9) Burn On - Randy Newman Pollution - June 22, 1969
The Cuyahoga River was constantly catching fire due to the oil and other chemicals on its surface, but one of the smaller fires was covered by Time magazine & led to the formation of the Environmental Protection Agency.
10) The School House Fire - The Dixon Brothers Fire - May 17, 1923
A schoolhouse in Camden, SC was packed for a graduation event when it caught fire from an oil lamp; 77 people died because they could not exit in time.
11) Baltimore Fire - Charlie Pool Fire - February 7-8, 1904
The Great Baltimore Fire in Baltimore, Maryland was the 3rd worst fire in US history. Many firefighters came from out of state but were unable to help because their hose couplings didn't fit Baltimore's fire hydrants, leading to standardization of firefighting equipment.
12) Hot Time In The Old Town Tonight - Mississippi John Hurt Fire - October 8–10, 1871
The Great Chicago Fire in Chicago, IL was reportedly started by a small fire in or around a barn. The initial response was quick but firefighters were sent to the wrong place which led to rapidly expanding in the mostly wooden town.
13) The Hindenberg Disaster - The Two Man Gentlemen Band Fire - May 6, 1937
The German passenger airship LZ 129 Hindenburg caught fire and was destroyed during its attempt to dock with its mooring mast in New Jersey, USA. This is why we can't have airships. :(
14) Enola Gay - The Hillbilly Moon Explosion Bombing - August 6, 1945
The Enola Gay was a bomber named after Enola Gay Tibbets, the mother of the pilot. It was the first aircraft to drop an atomic bomb (on Hiroshima, Japan).
15) Wreck of the Old 97 - Johnny Cash Train Wreck - September 27, 1903
The southern Railway mail train was running behind schedule and derailed on a trestle because it was moving excessively fast, killing 11 people and injuring 7 others.
16) 30,000 Pounds of Bananas - Harry Chapin Truck Crash - March 18, 1965
A truck driver was on his way to deliver a load of bananas to Scranton, PA. He was unable to control the truck's speed down a hill due to a mechanical failure, crashed into several cars and a house, and died. There were no other deaths, but many, many squashed bananas.

adventures of wandering nowhere (Vignettes)—nejiweek day 4
Day 4 Prompt— Fate | Freedom
It’s Canada day:)       Also I’m not that happy with these but here they are anyway.
nulla. (prologue)
There’s a lot of things money can’t buy you.
It’s cliche, but Neji Hyuga knows that it’s true in very many ways. Yet he also knows that money can buy you a lot of things to help with what it cannot. He always knew that the digits piling up in his bank account would be worth nothing if he didn’t save them for something good and he lets his uncle see what he wants to see until mid June before his nineteenth birthday.
Neji packs everything he needs, including his credit card, and goes to an airport. He doesn’t even know where he's going. Despite all the places he has been, the screen with way too many possible locations makes it extremely clear on how huge the world is and all the places worth going too expensive even for him.
He wonders if he should throw a dart to a map or ask the first person he sees, following them. But he has been nearly everywhere, Paris, New York, Los Angeles, London, Beijing, Barcelona, Cairo, Berlin, Dubai...and he realizes that what the only thing they have in common, even with Tokyo, is the size. Oh, he also realizes that he really doesn’t want to go to another huge city.
So he scans the chart again and several choices are knocked away so he considers the next question: what does he want to do?
Neji has been caged practically his whole life, doing everything his uncle wanted until now, and he was most definitely not going to stop yet. He wants to be able to run around and breathe fresh air and feel the breeze rather than the race of cars or drink from rivers so clean you could see the bottom. He wants space.
He stares at his map and thinks of space. Canada seems pretty nice. The country is huge, the population...not so much. There’s a variety of landscapes and people are said to be nice there. Honestly, he doesn’t really think much about kindness but the flight to Vancouver seems to speak to him so he books a flight as cheap as he can.
On the airplane, he sat on the side of two friends, one with a ridiculous black bowl cut and another with two buns on the sides of her head. He hears them talking about what they’re gonna do and the places they will see. He hasn’t heard of half of them, he hasn’t studied at all and has no plan. The guy screams that he loves Canada, catching the attention of several other passengers and the girl smacks him in a playful sort of way.
But they are friendly, ask him questions, and tell them of their experience in the country and being outdoors. They offer to let him wander with them, an offer he can’t refuse. He tells them that he has money and will pay for any expenses they can’t, but they smile at him with a glint in their eyes. Because to Tenten and Lee, money can buy them more time to travel, more time to live, and that’s when Neji knows that though he won’t have any of the familiar luxuries, his adventures are going to last a whole lot longer.
i. smaller big cities
Upon arriving in Vancouver, one thing is made very obviously clear to Neji: he will not be going to any tourist attractions. Vancouver is one of the biggest cities in Canada yet there is nothing more exhilarating about it than any other city he has been to.
Tenten rolls her eyes at the sound of Stanley Park and Lee exclaims how unyouthful it is to keep the orca whales. He’s prepared to buy a hotel room for the three of them but instead, they go to a consignment store and sell all of the clothes in his suitcase. After that, they shop for a new set of clothes that cater more to being outdoors than going to business meetings and now his wardrobe is mostly hiking pants, cheap t-shirts, and hoodies. The purchase of a sleeping bag and a blow-up sleeping pad more than makes up for the price of a hotel room.
Tenten and Lee then help his money again and they purchase a large second-hand pickup truck. They drive it to a nearby campsite and he’s absolutely shocked at how beautiful the mountains are. The lake is bluer than the sky and the area is filled with wildlife. He is taught how to set up their tent, sticking poles into tent gaps and held into the ground by metal pegs. A waterproof layer is thrown over. They then teach him to start a fire, which is a lot harder than it seems.
The two have been in Canada so many times that in optimal conditions, they can start one without a lighter, or even flint and steel. He has to use several bits of crumbled newspaper. He learns that they burn more if they are in smaller bits and that some branches won’t catch as well.
His sleep is not great, he is either too hot or too cold and when he wakes up to go to the bathroom it is pitch-black. He hears a rustling in the woods and screams. Neji never screams but the sound was terrifying and his two friends come rushing out with headlamps, blinding him.
He learns that headlamps are stored in the tent pockets and the next time he goes to the woods to do his business, it is a very good idea to rely on those instead of the stars.
ii. wildlife
Neji very much likes the birds and squirrels in the multiple camping trips he has now been on. He never thought that he’d like bathing in rivers and a swimsuit, but he does. He still isn’t sick of campfire-made spaghetti or smores.
He is in northern British columbia when he first sees a bear on the road. Bears are beautiful creatures. They are large and fluffy and the one he sees looks like a terrifying stuffed animal. Neji takes way too many pictures while Lee and Tenten laugh at him as they wonder when they can pull the truck away from the side of the road.
When he sees a bear when he’s camping, however, though his companions have kept all the smelly items in bear-proof containers, he is about to scream. Tenten clasps a hand over his mouth and waves her hands around. Lee lowers his voice several notches and tells the bear youthful things much slower. They talk to the bear for a few minutes, though it seems like several hours, and Neji swears he has never been as terrified in his life. In the end, the bear goes, as do they, and that’s when they realize how wrong they were not to give him the bear safety lesson.
He thinks that a bear is the most terrifying thing to happen to him though being relatively harmless if unprovoked, but one day they are just finishing packing the truck when he sees a moose. Neji is about to take a picture of the moose but it glares at him and suddenly has red blazing in his eyes. Lee is in the driver’s seat and Tenten is in the back of the pickup. Two of the four doors are still open. He is waiting for her to approach the moose in the way they did with the bear, but fear glazes in both their eyes and she screams run.
Neji is running for his life towards the truck and he jumps into the passenger seat and Lee drives off twice the speed limit, escaping a moose charging furiously towards them. All three of them are screaming for their lives and when they finally get to the highway, they look at each other and start laughing. The matter isn’t funny in the least, as Neji learns that there is no way to escape an angry moose rather than a bear, but they have just faced death in the form of a moose, right in the eye, but they survived.
iii. canoe trip
The first time the three of them actually rent instead of buy something, it happens to be a canoe, lifejackets, and drybags. They teach him how to canoe, every stroke he needs to know, and what to do if he flips. He tosses throwbags, ties knots, and packs bags. When they deep him good on the lake, they are ready to go onto a river.
They ask an old friend to park their truck at their end destination, and they load the canoes with the waterproof bags, their tents and sleeping bags, and four days of food supplies. They camp along the sides of the riverbank, making campfires, roasting marshmallows and hot dogs. When they’re lucky, they find berries and collect them for an extra source of food. When the sun finally sets, he can see all the stars glimmering above him and time seems to stop. He no longer cares about the pressures in the world on the disappointment he was to his uncle.
There are no problems in the middle of nowhere.
iv. talent
In the middle of nowhere, their truck breaks down.
Neji nearly has a mental breakdown because they haven’t seen a single car on that road for an hour. However, Tenten and Lee decide to sleep in the back of their truck and camp on the side of the road. Three other vehicles pass but they don’t stop. He wants to scream.
He’s going to be stuck here, he has no battery on his phone, there isn’t any cell connection, and they were supposed to stock up on food supplies that day. Coming here suddenly seems like a very bad idea. The whole night he is awake, tossing and turning, while Tenten and Lee are fast asleep, comfortable, content.
He realizes that it was all a cruel joke because Tenten was a skilled mechanic and she fixes their truck in a matter of twenty-six minutes. It appears that their sense of humour is not as great as her ability to fix a damaged engine.
v. canada day
Neji sees freedom like the red and white fireworks in the sky.
He isn’t scared anymore.
The world looks down at him instead of down on him. Because there’s this feeling of relief. He can’t think of hours or dates, only knows what today is because otherwise, there wouldn’t have been fireworks. He wants this to last forever, or at least as long as he can.
When Tenten and Lee told him that his money was time, not luxury, he completely understands it now. He doesn’t need the luxury of a roof anymore, good food, or clothes. Because in the end, the only thing they need to make this go on forever is gas and basic necessities.
He likes freedom, much more than he ever thought he would.

ON TARGET: Not all war crimes are equal
By Scott Taylor
On Easter Sunday Radio-Canada aired an interview with Omar Khadr wherein the former boy-soldier and subsequent detainee discussed his captivity in Guantanamo Bay. There was nothing new about Khadr’s tale, but simply appearing on the airwaves of our national broadcaster was enough to set off a frenzy across the social media spectrum.
The standard lines from the hate-Khadr crowd are that he is a terrorist who committed a war crime, who was then rewarded by the Canadian government with a $10.5 million settlement.
For Radio-Canada to interview him, and for the studio audience to have given Khadr a standing ovation was enough to spark a grass roots campaign calling on the Liberal government to defund the entire CBC Radio-Canada network.
For the record, Khadr was just 15 years old when U.S. troops captured him following a firefight in the village of Ayub Kheyl in 2002. That makes him a boy-soldier, a minor who was put in harm’s way by his father who was admittedly a member of al-Qaeda. That is on the father, not the boy.
The action that took place was conventional combat between U.S. Special Forces and the insurgents. Khadr was not planting bombs in a marketplace, he was fighting a battle, and ergo he is not a terrorist. The ‘war crime’ to which Khadr plead guilty in order to obtain his eventual release was the killing of U.S. Special Forces Sergeant Christopher Speer.
At the time of his death, Speer and his comrades were in the process of killing Khadr’s colleagues, and Khadr, the sole survivor was grievously wounded in the firefight. The weapon Khadr is alleged to have used was a grenade, which is a short-range area weapon, meaning Speer was not singled out as a target. To call his death in battle a ‘murder’ is ludicrous and to label that action as a ‘war crime’ is insane.
As for the $10.5 million payout, this was not a reward to Khadr for killing Speer, but rather compensation for Canada having violated his rights by allowing him to suffer torture and a 10 year long illegal detainment at the hands of his U.S. captors.
In a perfect world, the U.S. would have paid to compensate Khadr, but alas, such is not the case.
Another recent stretch of the definition of a ‘war crime’ is that of Boutros Massroua. The 54-year-old resident of British Columbia is originally from Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley, which borders Syria. Prior to claiming refugee status in Canada in 2015, Massroua plied his trade as a vehicle mechanic in his hometown.
He is a Catholic Christian who was allegedly hired by Daesh (aka ISIS or ISIL) to repair pick-up trucks. No one has ever accused Massroua of picking up a weapon or harming anyone personally, but as a result of fixing up trucks for the Daesh evildoers, this mechanic has been deemed to have committed a crime against humanity by a Vancouver-based Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada tribunal.
The Board’s ruling noted that “If it weren’t for [Massroua’s] work on these armed vehicles, these vehicles would not be returning to Syria with guns on top of them – to shoot unarmed women, children, men of every religion, to blow up buildings.” I understand that it is a crime to aid and abet a criminal in the direct commission of a crime, but to link the fixing of vehicles – for money – to the evil acts of Daesh seems a bit over the top.
On the flip side of this, we have the story of decorated U.S. Navy Seal, Special Operations Chief Edward Gallagher who was arrested in September 2018 on over a dozen charges of premeditated murder and attempted murder. The atrocities which Gallagher allegedly committed took place in Iraq in 2017 as the U.S. led alliance, including Canada’s special forces, were driving Daesh fighters out of Mosul.
The shocking allegations were brought forward, not by left-wing, liberal pacifists, but by seven elite fellow Navy Seals. According to these eyewitnesses, Gallagher deliberately gunned down a young schoolgirl and an unarmed old man. He would indiscriminately spray machine gun bullets and rockets into civilian neighbourhoods and on one occasion he allegedly stabbed to death an unarmed, wounded teenage captive.
Initially, the reports of Gallagher’s actions were ignored by the Navy brass, and the accusers were warned that their careers could be impacted should they pursue matters.
However, when threatened with it being disclosed to the media, the investigation was launched which led to Gallagher’s arrest. Supporters of the accused include 40 Republican Members of Congress who have signed a letter calling for the Navy to release Gallagher from jail pending his trial, and President Donald Trump who tweeted out that the imprisoned SEAL would be moved to a ‘less restrictive confinement’.
To date, a crowd funding initiative has raised US$375,000 for Gallagher’s defence.
If all war crimes were treated equally, one can only wonder when they will arrest the mechanic who fixed Gallagher’s vehicle?

Fun fact I’ve actually been to this town. It is tiny and creepy. My family’s truck broke down on the way back to Vancouver BC from Las Vegas. All I remember about the city is it being completely desolate. Thankfully there was a small mechanic in town.

I recently remembered reading about the case of a UFO enthusiast who went missing one night in the eighties after leaving a note about going on a journey to outer space and really wanted to look into it. The story is wild, so I thought I’d dig a little deeper and we could take a look at it together.
Disappearance: On the 29th of November, 1980, a 32 year old man named Granger Ormond Taylor walked out of his parent’s home in Duncan, Vancouver Island, British Colombia, Canada. He left behind a strange hand written note, promising his valuables and money to his parents and explaining that he was going to board an alien spacecraft where he would go on a trip around the universe. A hand-drawn map of Waterloo Mountain was sketched on the back of goodbye note.
The note:
“Dear Mother and Father, I have gone away to walk aboard an alien spaceship, as recurring dreams assured a 42-month interstellar voyage to explore the vast universe, then return. I am leaving behind all my possessions to you as I will no longer require the use of any. Please use the instructions in my will as a guide to help. Love, Granger.”
Granger had also left a will. He had scribbled out the word “death” in the document, and corrected it instead with “departure”.
I have questions:
1. Was this a suicide note?
2. Did Granger truly believe he was going off into space with his alien associates?
3. If so, how did he imagine this would be achieved? (for example, did he believe he was going to wait atop a mountain and be picked up in a UFO)
4. Was suicide involved in this mission?
When I read about this case I can’t help but think of the mass suicide orchestrated by Marshall Applewhite and the “Heaven’s gate” cult. Applewhite taught that suicide was needed in order to board a spacecraft that would be trailing behind the Hale–Bopp comet. (View their active website here)Did Granger Taylor have a hypothesis of his own when it came to inter-dimensional travel? Also, note that he gives a time frame for his return: 42 months, or 3 and a half years. Did he cross out “death” in his will and replace it with “departed” because he truly believed that he would return to Earth after 42 months of interstellar travel?
The man: The note was found in the barn which Granger used as a workshop. He had a knack for taking things apart and putting them back together and was a naturally talented mechanic. Granger eventually dropped out of high school to pursue his calling and worked at a mechanic shop in the area.  He went on to rebuild various vehicles he found out in the woods in the surrounding areas of Duncan, such as a small World War 2 biplane, a train engine and a bulldozer. Granger restored the bi-plane (A Kitty Hawk) to such a degree that it reportedly later sold for $20,000 a year or so after he went missing.   He even constructed his own alien space craft in the backyard. Apparently he made it from scrap metal and a couple of discarded satellite dishes and spent endless hours reading, researching and studying the mechanics that went into creating such a craft.
The obsession with this project may have come from the fact that he reportedly believed he was in communication with alien beings. Apparently he would talk openly about the conversations he had with the aliens, even mentioning the trip he was going to take on their craft. From what I can gather, though, his loved ones thought he was talking about dreams or fantasies and never for a moment though he would one day drive off into the night never to be seen again.
In an interview with Vice, a friend of Taylors, Mr. Robert Keller, explains that the missing man did frequently dream that aliens were going to collect him one day and that he actually slept in the space craft he constructed, now and again.  An article in the express describes the UFO as more of a space-themed structure that could be comfortably slept in overnight and had been fitted with various pieces of furniture, a TV set and stove. Taylor would sit inside of the craft and mill over the mechanics behind powering such a vehicle.I managed to find a picture of the craft (here) and it really is quite impressive. It has a real retro look to it, a sort of up-turned flat-topped straw hat with a domed saucer on top and bunny ear antennas. It's reminiscent of the style of UFO you find in old stories of self-proclaimed alien abduction victims from the sixties and seventies.
Those who knew him describe him as a genius, lonely, a gentle giant, a brilliant eccentric with a love for all things outer space who liked to smoke a blunt now and again. He was serious about his creations, though, and he was serious about the existence of extra-terrestrial life forms. According to friends Granger Taylor had been dropping acid several times a day in the lead up to his disappearance.
Waterloo Mountain: So what about the map of the mountain drawn on the reverse side of Grangers goodbye note? Waterloo mountain is just under 20 miles from Taylor’s parent house in Duncan via Holt road. It would have taken him around 50 minutes to drive there in his highlighter pink 1972 Datsun pickup, but let’s also keep in mind that the night of November 29th was a rainy one. Searches of the weather for that specific date don’t correlate with the “raging storms” noted in other articles as we’re lead to believe, but still, dark night, slick road, possibility of an accident? If the map of the mountain had any connection to where he was planning to drive that night, the 32 year old would have been in for a rough hike. There are many stories online of people attempting to hike on Vancouver Island in less than perfect weather conditions and having to be airlifted to safety after getting stranded for several days. Looking at the drive from his hometown to Waterloo Mountain we can see how rural and isolated the area is, nothing but trees and I imagine darkness for miles. Could it be a possibility that Granger Taylor veered off course or had an accident?
The conspiracy theory articles you can find online about this case indicate that no car or remains relating to Granger Taylor were ever found, but this is not correct. It may add to the spooky-factor to tell people he vanished without a trace, but it’s simply not true.
Take a look at this newspaper clipping (above) and you’ll see that six years after Taylor went missing fragments of his Datsun pickup and pieces of human bone were found at a blast site nearby Mount Prevost. Mount Prevost is just under an hour away from Duncan. The bones were eventually identified as the remains of Granger Taylor.
So what happened?
Apparently Taylor had dynamite with him in his truck. It’s not as random as it sounds, as he regularly used dynamite to dispose of tree-stumps on his parents land. Either accidentally or deliberately the explosives blew up both granger and the car. The only thing we’re not sure of is, how and why.Did he blow himself up or was it an accident?Nobody knows for sure, but in my opinion, I feel as though coupled with the goodbye note and will, that he it’s certainly possible he did it on purpose. Check out the article (here)
So there we have it. Solved.
Apparently there's a documentary being made, due to be released sometime this year, so keep your eyes open for that.

Why B.C. man drives a Tesla but lives in a van
At the end of his day, Lucas Philips drives to his home overlooking Spanish Banks Beach in Vancouver, near some of the most expensive real estates in Canada. He climbs out of his black Tesla and soaks in what he calls his "million-dollar view."
Philips is no wealthy property owner. His home is a Vanguard campervan berthed in a beachside parking lot. He spends most of his life on wheels, working as an Uber driver in his leased Tesla. He’s trying to get ahead and lives in his "sweet motor home" while taking online courses in the hope of getting a job in computer science.
Philips, who immigrated from Turkey five years ago, thinks himself lucky to share the view with mansion owners without draining his savings. He’s a member of a community of Vancouverites living in vans, trailers, and other recreational vehicles parked across the city.
Some, like Philips, use it as an economic strategy to cut costs as they plot a course to prosperity. Others have opted for a nomadic lifestyle and plan to move on. But more people are sleeping in vehicles as a last resort as they try to stave off full-blown homelessness in the notoriously expensive city.
Philips said in an interview in November that he used to pay a monthly rent of $1,600 for a one-bedroom suite in North Vancouver. When his rent went up to $2,300, he decided it didn’t make sense.
"The rent prices are just skyrocketing, and it’s really not that great when you pay for rent with half of your income," he said. So, in October, he bought a van and began living at Spanish Banks. Side benefits to the savings were that it made him feel closer to nature, and he enjoyed the van community’s friendly vibe.
He said he hoped to move back into an apartment this year to better focus on his studies. However, others have embraced life on wheels. Retired California mechanical engineer Alex Mosson, 58, was parked last week at Spanish Banks in a beige recreational vehicle he called his "tiny house."
He offered wine from a rack as he prepared a pot of clam chowder, with bacon and sourdough bread fresh out of the oven. Newly arrived in Canada, he was joined by his girlfriend, Massie McCloud, 52, a retired airline pilot who lives in Kitsilano. They were planning to spend a few more nights in Vancouver, then Whistler, before heading for Mexico, where Mosson used to live. They intend to return to Canada in March, according to McCloud.
"Don’t make other people jealous," interjected Mosson. McCloud likened the RV to "a giant backpack." "You have all your things with you," she said. "Part of the reason we are both excited about doing this trip is that we both had really confined lives for the last several years," said McCloud, who added that she is recovering from long-term COVID.
But not everyone on wheels has a choice. Over several visits to Spanish Banks, many residents appeared to be living out of cars and pickups, ill-equipped for the purpose. Their windows were screened with makeshift curtains for privacy, and their back seats and truck beds were packed with possessions.
The residents who approached these situations were more cautious. November rain dripped off the face of one man as he made repairs to his white box truck, strewn with black graffiti. He declined to give his name for an interview, saying he found his circumstances humiliating.
Dean Kurpjuweit, president of Vancouver’s Union Gospel Mission, said vans and trailers have become a way for some working people to stay in the city amid high conventional housing costs.
But the mission "will never advocate for living in vans as an alternative housing solution," he said. "We buy trailers to go on vacations... but no one wants to live there permanently," he said.
He said there is a difference between the "wilderness experience" of an RV and the cramped, inconvenient long-term life in the city. Living for an extended period in a trailer in Vancouver is mostly due to the "reality of the housing market here," Kurpjuweit said.
Local residents said in the summer and early fall that hundreds of people were living in vehicles at Spanish Banks. Dozens were still there in the fall, even after the City of Vancouver started warning people to move on, although their numbers dwindled with the onset of winter.
There are other campers in less scenic locations, clustered near big-box stores or scattered on quiet side streets. Keith Light, 76, used to own a home on Pender Island, a 40-minute ferry ride from Swarts Bay on Vancouver Island. But he's been living in a recreational vehicle for more than a year, which is now parked outside an east Vancouver Canadian Tire store.
In 2021, Light sold his island home to pay off debts. He said this week that it wasn’t until he’d relocated to Metro Vancouver that he realized housing costs were “ten times higher” than on Pender.
He lived with a friend, who got "a little tired" of his presence after about a year, and he moved out in May. "So, I got online and found this RV." "I got a pretty good deal on it, and it cost me $19,000," said Light, who lives on a monthly pension of $1,900.
He said it was comfortable but not a permanent solution. For one thing, the van has no electricity. Light said two external generators had been stolen, and the vehicle’s built-in generator didn’t work.
There’s also a sense of insecurity faced by most vehicle dwellers. It’s illegal to park a large vehicle on the street or in a park in Vancouver between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m., including at Spanish Banks, although exceptions apply.
Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation spokeswoman Eva Cook said that illegally parked RVs remain a “challenging issue” in many communities.
Since October, 47 notices reminding owners of parking rules have been issued, and most vehicles parked overnight at Spanish Banks have moved, she said. Cook said it was still working to educate users that overnight parking isn’t allowed in parks.
Paul Kershaw, a policy professor at the University of British Columbia’s school of population, said many people living in vans are “just as smart and as hard-working” as homeowners.
But some have been born too late and are now locked out of Vancouver’s real estate market or are facing prohibitive rent on even a one-bedroom apartment. Vancouver remains the most expensive place to rent in Canada, with the average price of a one-bedroom apartment now going for $2,633 per month, according to the National Rental Report issued last month.
Saving up for a home is also out of reach for many. In the mid-1970s, it took the typical young person five years of full-time work to save a 20 percent down payment on an average-priced home. Now it takes 17 years," said Kershaw.
Jenny Tan, a city councilor in Maple Ridge, east of Vancouver, is all too familiar with the high housing costs. She used to live in the West End in a trailer, an experience that compelled her to get into politics to try to make things "a little more affordable."
"I will be super honest; if I had a choice, I would do it for fun, she said. She lived in her trailer for three years as "cheerfully and optimistically" as she could, equipping it with a projector and hosting board games with friends.
But look, if there was a one-bedroom apartment to rent somewhere, I would have chosen that, said Tan. She said she ended up in a trailer in 2017 after doing all the right things in life" by graduating from university and landing a decent job.
With money tight, living in her trailer was better than paying rent. But the downsides outweighed any sense of fun. "When you live in a trailer, you are constantly afraid, stressed about losing your spot, about bylaw officers," she explained. "For the years I lived in my trailer, I had no hot running water."
Tan eventually moved into her house and considered her trailer life a learning experience. "But it was not the thing I would have chosen," said Tan. In east Vancouver, Light agrees.
Living in an RV is better than sleeping on the street, but it's not a permanent home. He said a renter should have to pay no more than 30 percent of their income to put a roof over their head.
He said a renter should have to pay no more than 30 percent of their income to put a roof over their head. Hoping that I can get a bachelor suite or one-bedroom in one of these subsidized housing units in Vancouver, said Light.
He said he spent a year on the waiting list with BC Housing. But unfortunately, the only way the places come up is when somebody dies, and that’s pretty bad. That’s also a sad thing.
